in episode 16, junghwan and sunwoo accompany dongryong to a dance competition, but dongryong leaves before his turn because the other dancers are too good. their names? hyun jin-young and park jin-young (both of them were born in 1971, meaning they’d be the same age as the gang)!!!
this has got to be my favorite easter egg by far, and it’s so small and specific that you have to watch that moment and know some background about 90s kpop to get the joke. hyun jin-young (fourth picture) was known for being the first artist to be signed under sm entertainment, and his songs were pretty hip-hop based, his most well-known song being “you in vague memory”, which has been covered by a bunch of newer groups. you may not have heard of him because in 1993, he was caught with drugs, which pretty much ended his career.
anddd park jin-young is the founder of jyp entertainment (third picture of him when he was younger)!! which is a very well known entertainment company that currently houses groups like day6, got7 and twice (earlier groups include g.o.d. and wonder girls.) jyp actually debuted as a singer in the early 90s, and in episode 18, junghwan actually listens to a song by him, wonder if he realized he’d actually seen the singer in person a few years ago! XD
but yeah i really just love learning about older korean music (70s to 90s), so i found this really cool!! i bet dongryong regrets not talking to them at the dance contest, he could’ve gotten famous then 🤣
