I love the in death book series. I think the last dozen or so have been kind of phoned in and theyve probably hit their “end” date a dozen times over but I like them all the same.
Im listening to the latest now and thinking about Rob Thomas and Veronica Mars. Rob Thomas said that thw reason he killed off Logan is that no one wants to watch a character in a long term relationship solve crimes. Eve Dallas is a homicide detective. She met her husband in book 1. They moved in together in book 3. They got married maybe 2 or 3 books later. The book series is over 50 titles long (not counting novellas) and remains entertaining. Theres only been one book where their marriage was “in trouble” and the book is always focused on the murder. He talked about shoe horning Logan in on cases that he has nothing to do with. In in Death Eves husband is a former thief (and murderer (special circumstances), how do you like that for a bad boy) but current interplanetary business man. He finds himself helping out during investigations often. But he has his own life and career. When he doesnt have time to work with Eve he doesnt. Theres a whole stable of characters that we havent seen in several books.
Rob Thomas just sucks is all and lacks creativity if he couldnt find a way to make it work. Or he just didnt want to make it work. Its well known in the fandom that he and Kristen didnt like Logan and was shocked when the character took off. They kept trying to push him out but it never worked.
And finally. Whats that test? The one wherw you take a scene of women and observe what they talk about: most tv shows put a group of women together and all they talk about is guys and that they couldnt pass that test. This latest in Death has a great scene with
Eve–Lt Dallas homicide cop
Nadine Furst–journalist/author/researcher and head of a research team
Reo–prosecuting attorney
3 kick a women sitting at a table eating burgers and fries and talking about taking down a cultist/human trafficker. It was an awesome scene. Tv shows act like its impossible to show women being competent and awesome. I widh they could all read that scene.
I dont like a ton of Nora Roberts books but shes neat. Way to go Nora. Thanks for that great scene. Also Rob Thomas is a butt.

I refuse to watch Logan get killed off. If I haven’t seen it then it doesn’t happen, right 😅 I think it’s really lazy storytelling to think there’s nothing left after they get together (and also obviously she is woman so her life must be solely focussed on her man 🙄)

I watched the first few episodes of the first season of Veronica Mars and I remember liking the way Veronica was written and portrayed.

        The first season was excellent!
The secobd season was better than the third.
The third season….um…gave us a perfect example of the nice guy trope.
The movie was a love letter to the fans.
The books were good but apparently not cannon?
And the fourth season is an abomination.
They really should have written the fourth season like the books. Logan was on leave for a majority of them. And Rob Thomas could have written Logan out without having to kill him and risk alienating a bunch of fans. And given his imagination time to work up either a. How to kill him in a manner befitting the character or b. How to write a woman in a relationship.

The first two seasons are really good, the third season was…there…the movie was fun but is really jarring if you watch it straight away because they’ve suddenly aged a lot.

I do not believe I know of any fourth season 😅

I eish season 4 didnt happen. It was not good. Even if you ignore what happens to Logan. Ive read some theories that the reason that Veronica feels like such a jerk during the season is because the season takes place after Logans death and its Veronica telling us what happens and she feela so guilty that she makes herself look worse.
And then I read that this is a perfect ending for Logan as there is literally nowhere else for his character to go. Hes grown from a punk kid to a happily married family man. All of his growth took place off screen and without anything for him to work on it makes sense for him to die now–the happiest hes ever been or will ever be.
      Hate that as well.
What I did like was a fan retooling of season 4. Veronica and Logan hook up after the movie–and it doesnt work out. Hes in therapy hes found his structure in the military and hes happy. He becomes friends with Wallace when he goes and speaks at the school about military life and turning your life around. He meets a lovely teacher and suddenly Logan and his gf are having double dates with Wallace and soon to be mrs. Wallace. They become best friends to the point when wallace and mrs. Wallace get married Logan and Veronica are his groomsmen. Veronica starts avoiding Wallace because Logan and gf spend so much time with Wallace and Mrs Wallace and kids. Veronica starts to loose herself to the darkness Wallace always wants Veronica to be in his life but he has a wife and kids now and he doesnt want her darkness taintibg their lives. Logan would never chest on his gf but hes found himself on more than one occasion trying to save Veronica from herself. She accuses Logan of being with her because hes waiting for Veronica to come out of the darkness and they ultimately break up. It would have been interesting. Theres a whole alternative season 4 in ao3. I mich prefer those to the nonsense we got

I used to love the In Death series, but I haven’t read the last 10 or so. There were good parts but it was getting kind of repetitive. But I will always love Eve and Roarke and how their relationship and careers were handled.

Don’t get me started on all of Rob Thomas’ b.s. excuses for killing off Logan. He just wanted to write Veronica on the road, solving crimes, and hooking up with different guys. At least it looks like he won’t get the chance after the response to Season 4.

They are getting repetitive. And I kind of hate that theres no tension between Eve and Roarke anymore. Of course hes going to drop everything and join the police team–Eve doesnt even have to ask him or the higher ups to make him a consultant. He just is one. Of course Eve is going to look the other way as he picks locks and goes into places they arent supposed to be–see how her edges are softening? I feel like that illegal computer that he had that Eve would wrestly with asking him to use (because illegal!) has been dropped all together and these days I lowkey wonder if Eve even has the skillset to solve a crime without Roarke anymore. But the last two books were good. Shadows in Death–someone from Roarkes past (a contract killer) reappears and makes a play for him. Other than the end where the ENTIRE FORCE flies to Ireland it was really good. The ending felt more like fanfic and wanting every character in the scenes.
Faithless, the one that just came out is about cultists and has Eve and Peabody doing good solid police work–not relying in magic EDD and Roarke skills.

As much as I like the books–and I do–I think they shoumd have ended years ago. They used to be about a homicide cop and her husband from the wrong sude of the tracks the self made billionaire and their group of friends. And its still about that except Eve is now comfortable in her digs–I dont think there are any scenes in awe of how huge the house is anymore. Mavis is now an international rock star married to an internationally renowned fashion designer and they just bought a mansion. The tiny apartment that Eve used to live in that Peabody and McNab rented has been left so that they can rent a property on Mavis and Leonardos mansion. Nadine Furst has writren multiple books, one has been made into a movie, the movie and Nadine have won an oscar.
Like…things are supposed to change. Books get boring if things dont change in the characters lives but Naked in Death takes place in 2058. Faithless in 2061. Thats a lot of changes in 4 years. The characters from the first few books wouldnt even recognize these people, for better or worse. I once had a manager call Roarke a dog whos had his teeth pulled. That seems like an accurate description.

And Rob Thomas is a butt.

Oh and I meant to say this about Rob Thomas: he DOES just want Veronica to drive around hooking up with dudes–thats why the sex scene with Leo and solving crimes. But I dont think he gets that other than season one, his crimes/mysteries have never been the appeal of the show. Veronica isnt even the appeal of the show. Shes kind of really judgy and mean. Its her relationships that manage to creep in and around and through her judgy and mean and get right to the center of her marshmallow beart that makes Veronica Mara so good. Ita Veronica and her dad. Ita Veronica and Wallace and how much they LOVE each other without it ever going to a romantic or sex place. Its Veronica and Mac being Q and Bond and taking down bad guys and Veronica holding Mac as she sobbed over her first big breakup. Its Veronica and Logan being so very broken but falling for each other and hurting each other again and again because neither of them are very good at love and relationships but they want to be for each other. So a season 5 or the originally pitched season 4 of FBI Veronica taking down the baddies never would have worked because Veronica needs Neptune and its inhabitants otherwise shes just a cliched pi antihero doing boring, cliched antihero things.
