DAY 23: (not so) secret pleasure I came several times to the Beanie-wall to promote Idol: the Coup, so it’s not really a secret that this makjang/idol drama hybrid is my 2021 favourite bad drama.
Drama’s flaws first: it’s a very shout-y drama, over-the-top bad things keep on pilling on our girls, acting is sometimes stilted, and some things are straight up super cheesy (yes, ghosts, I mean you).
But it was a really enjoyable watch! Beamies, hear me out:
*I loved the companionship of the Cotton Candy girls, the fact that each of them had a background story and was a rounded character.
*There are lots of different songs and choreos where other idol dramas keep on banging the same 2 songs, and we get to have a peek at the creative process and the studio work, which I find very cool.
*The underdog narrative works, and the way the girls take the narrative in their own hands through savy use of social media and gossip journalism.
*Besides, Hani is awesome as Kim Jena, the group leader and moral compass.
*Finally, we get Kwak Siyang as cold CEO in the outside/ begrudgingly Cinnamon Roll in the inside, and I’m here for that.
My lizard brain responds a little too well to Cheesy, so I may be a little overenthusiastic about this one, so, Beanies, proceed at your own risk. But do give it a try! 😉 #2021 drama roundup

It was a really great show. Its interesting how they built up a different dynamic with the Cotton Candy members, and really looked into each one, compared to the other idol groups from Imitation and Let Me Be Your Knight.
