Y’all. I was minding my business. Doing my hair in preparation for the new job in the morning and I thought to myself, “Kyle,” –thats what I call myself, Kyle–“Kyle, let’s watch a drama.” I went to Netflix. I went to the illegal site and finally I went to viki. I clicked on a drama without even reading the summary just thought to myself that’s a cute thumbnail. The first ep was cute. But as the credits were rolling I saw something horrifying.
A couple. Walking under a red umbrella.
I looked the drama up on mdl.
I’m watching a cdrama remake of Pretty Noona. According to mdl there are some major differences–they are step sibs and not childhood friends, where they work is different, and apparently they never break up. On the whole it’s supposed to be way lighter then the source material.
How….how did this happen to me?

Please can you share the title I need to read up on that drama I am struggling to see how that works as a remake.

It’s Love the Way You Are. It doesn’t feel like Pretty Noona though, so that’s a good thing.

I have read that synopsis before and didn’t make any connections but then I remembered what I knew of as Something in the rain is called Pretty Noona who buys me food so maybe that link with providing food in his childhood. I still can’t see how anyone made the link between the two dramas and if I had watched it probably still would be none the wiser. Luckily, it sounds like you caught it early. So you have the choice to see if they did a better job or run away while you still can.

It’s weird because in some ways it’s nothing at all like Pretty Noona other than it’s a Noona romance and in other ways there’s no denying it.
For example, their entire back story is different than Pretty Noona, male lead doesn’t have an older sister at all in this drama and is actually a part of her family (step brother or something) so the plot with him not being good enough for her because of his poor/ socially inferior family isn’t an issue at all (so far anyway). But then there are scenes that are frame by frame the same. She skips out on going clubbing with ML because pervy guy at work made a mistake and is blaming her. She gets the music going and is dancing around, drinking a beer when ML comes back because he’d rather help her than go clubbing. He calls and she rejects the call. He laughs to himself and then knocks on the glass wall, she drops to the ground embarrassed and then pops up and lets him in.
Frame by frame the exact same.
I’m going to watch it and see if the middle and ending are better. I already don’t think I’ll like it as much as the first 8 of Pretty Noona. Those actors had explosive off the charts chemistry (imo) and the actors in the remake are in pretty meh. Like, they are perfectly fine. If I hadn’t seen Pretty Noona and wasn’t comparing the two I probably wouldn’t have even noticed the lackluster chemistry. It’s honestly probably only lackluster in comparison.

The chemistry in Something in the rain was off the charts that’s why I was so gutted with the rest of the drama as she was so easily swayed by other people instead of sticking with him. I read the comments on Viki where they said it is similar but much lighter and hopeful.

    RUN AWAY!!!

Because you’ve seen this drama? Or just because Pretty Noona is a terrible drama and I have an obsessive personality?

        The latter. Save yourself!

I really can’t figure out why anyone anywhere would remake that show. The twisted, burned-out hulk should be left by the side of the road as a warning to others.

I really love the first 8 eps. I’m watching this on hopes they fix the middle and back half. And then I can pretend that’s how it ends in the original!

‘The twisted, burned-out hulk should be left by the side of the road as a warning to others’ 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The mum in the original was horrendous, the female lead going in the car with ex and going on the blind date was ridiculous and staying to fight a losing battle in the work place made no sense. But that feeling of the excitement of the first moments of love and the depth of his love was captured so well so I was one of the few that was glad they got back together in the end as she had learnt her lessons by the end.

I wasn’t glad they got back together in the end. :/ They never talked about why they broke up in the first place! Or how everything went so very sideways! I’m convinced they would have had a few good months maybe even years without her mom and his sister up their butt but they would have broken up again because they never learned how to communicate.

A Pretty Noona but lighter? I don’t want it. There are many noona romances but none like Pretty Noona. The realism of this drama is what it made good. The Korean society is what is with its defaults.

I hated the back half of Pretty Noona. Absolutely hated it, so I’ll watch this weird lighter version and see how they ha dle the back half. They’ve already changed the relationship with the ex boyfriend. In a lot of ways it doesn’t feel like a remake at all.

Yeah, it was I meant. If they changed the background of the story is not Pretty Noona anymore. This story is integrated in the Korean society. It’s not a rom-com.

I think part of my problem with Pretty Noona is that they sell it as a rom-com when it ISNT. Like you said, its social commentary but it’s also Jin-As story. The tacked on reunion felt tacked on and dishonest to her story

I don’t think they sold it as a rom-com. The genre is pretty clear with the Director’s way of filming.

I don’t think the reunion was dishonest. Like the first time, he was a trigger to get what she wants.
