I have been feeling less enchanted with KDramas recently. Looks like my ‘fever’ finally broke!:) I still like some of them so much but am getting much less tolerant of the tiresome tropes. Sigh.

I wish there would be some Kdramas commissioned like “Silent”, this sublime and moving JDrama. I rather not see hideous chaebols and their rapacious families (at least not without some serious systemic comeuppance), trucks of doom, ridiculous and contrived plots, tropes that are so predictable that come with a set of almost identical dialogue and implausible characters. I would like to see (but unlikely) an attempt to portray genuine accountability for serious human rights violations by corporations, governments and individuals, powerful and otherwise. The ‘rotten apple” trope is so bankrupt but attractive as it allows for dramas to package themselves as art but it doesn’t require engaging with the ugly truths about media and entertainment corporate ownership/control, and doesn’t ask genuinely tough questions about extreme income disparity in South Korea. And, not everyone has a soulmate. It would have been nice if it were true but it ain’t the case. I know. I am turning into a “get off my lawn” kind of a person. Aigoo.

It’s true the dramas/films I am watching now are more slice of life with less obvious PPL. The J dramas seem to be knocking it out the park like they have taken the best of K dramas from back in the day.

Are you going to watch J drama First love it’s out on 24th and looks absolutely divine from the cinematography alone.

I would recommend Forest of Secrets (Stranger on Netflix) if you haven’t watched it yet.

How much did the honeymoon phase last? Mine was a long one, about 10 years. I had so much good will toward any kdrama and little by little the tropes kind of worn it off, to a point that I don’t expect them to be charming anymore.
I don’t known what a “get off my lawn” kind of person is but I suspect that badge has been achieved a long time ago kkk.

That kdrama obsession with money has bored me so much that I’ve come to detest any plot about company power struggles and bickering rich families. Five minutes into Reborn Rich and I was already bored and annoyed. I still care about the possibility of interesting characters and some fantasy or romance and dramatic twists and turns but they are not easy to find in dramaland these days.

Whoa. I’m 8 years in the run and although I can see the tropes coming from a mile away, I still continue to watch them all the while complaining in frustration.
