I realized why I keep skipping dramas which have pretty actresses. I feel like I can’t relate to them since their problems are different to a plain girl like mine. [I do relate more to plain or more average looking actresses, a habit that came from reading novels]. Sorry if that sounds petty lol.
Then you must skip a lot of dramas. I can’t think of a single drama (with female leads) that didn’t have any really pretty actors. Korean actors are almost always beautiful. What gets to me is when the male lead says the female character, played by a beautiful actress, isn’t pretty. I’m like ‘just because you gave her a perm or some wacky outfits doesn’t change the fact that she’s a very beautiful woman!’ My side-eye game gets really strong in those moments and I absolutely can’t relate.
Sorry I have been away for a while! Lol to answer your question, I do skip a lot of you know buzzworthy dramas like, ‘Because this is my first life’, or the current favorite ‘WWWSK’ or weight lifting fairy kim bok joo even, just cause I thought I didn’t know where the heroines were coming from. Like you said, when dramas are trying to tell a story of an average girl, and then pick an actress who is very attractive, has got impeccable features or is just plain charming, I can’t see why or how they fit the role, I also can’t kind of see past their prettiness if there isn’t anything in their personality which says otherwise. Like on WWWSK, park min young’s secretary is so perfect and she has even got the narcissistic boss who’s in head over heels over her.. it is kind of daunting for someone as unremarkable as me haha. Except for some actresses who do seem like their personality speaks more for themselves than their face, kdramas have mostly disappointed me. You will probably realize this more when I say my favorite actresses are gong hyo jin [who has a more quirky personality and her appeals lie mostly in how she works so well with the doormat type characters, like tae gong shil in Master’s sun , or Kim Go Eun, who although pretty but knows well how to portray someone like hong sul who’s a paranoid soul and tend to overthink about people around her.
So yeah, perms or ugly outfits doesn’t make someone ugly, for example LSK as kim bok joo. So I cringed when the show tried to sell that a girl as skinny as LSK is an overweight weightlifter. :S
My only favorite drama where a girl was comfortable in her own skin would be “my lovely kim sam soon”, Kim Sun Ah actually gained weight for this role, and had an adorable loveline with hyun bin.
I only watched half of the show. Are you referring to something like how oh young couldn’t stand pretty people too? I think I have a vague memory of it. :S
I loved it! She is cute but still has some qualities which makes her a down to earth personality, you are right. Also a very good actress! The show was fun yep, also the chemistry between PBY and Park Hyung Shik was just perfect.

(Hmmph) WFKBJ is such a great example of this. Baggy outfits/jumpsuits/awkward hairdos could not change the fact that she was a gorgeous thin woman.

That’s the very reason why I couldn’t like this drama wholly. :S
