I love it and hate it, I think. Love it, because it has me thoroughly invested, and the character development is fantastic, and so much more. Hate it, because it has me thoroughly invested and the inevitable tragedy is going to wreck me.
You described it perfectly for me and my love-hate relationship.
The cast and production quality are all excellent. Unfortunately there is no happy ending for anyone. 🙁
Oh when Mr Sunshine ended I was so emotionally exhausted and wiped out from all my crying. I don’t know if this will be the same as I don’t feel as invested in the characters for some reason.
But it may just be like Mr Sunshine.
It’s quite possible to be “good” and so sad/tragic/doomed that its not fun. I watched just one week and decided even Han Ye-ri isn’t good enough to make a show in that time period fun to watch.
Koreans may want to watch anyway because of the historical importance, but those of us who just want escapist fun….
It’s a proper sageuk, heavy on “real” history so it’s raw and tragic from the very beginning.
If they focus more on the peasants and the core group of the rebellion, their commitment to their cause instead of the many outside conflicts than it’ll have the viewers heart like COMRADES.

Is it bad? I enjoy the first episode and plan to continue.

Maybe too many viewers are like me and start out hoping for a not too tragic sageuk, then see the writing on the wall and leave?

Love triangle or death? I can handle death but not the first one.

@manohira I think it’s quite good. Yes, there’s going to be tragedy and/or heartbreak ….. but nevertheless it’s very good.

@korfan @mistyisles is it going to be like Gaksital? I dropped Gaksital, to much heartbreak for me.

@manohira I’ve never watched Gaksital so unfortunately, I have no answer regarding any possible similarities to it.
