WWW made me wonder what searching engine do you use. Do you also use Google or is it like in Korea with bigger sites like Naver & Daum? Also do real time searches show? Here it doesn’t & all use Googl

I actually got interested in different search engines too. I’m in the US so it’s pretty much Google. I tried to get more information On naver but it’s kinda hard in English.

I really don’t like the concept of real time searches and I couldn’t imagine the nonsense people would get down with out here to get on top of one. But I did check if Google has anything like that & they do, but it’s really hidden and takes some effort to see.

I didn’t even think that someone would want to be on the search list. OMG now I’m thinking about that and that’s not something I wanna see

It’s also the same in France and in turkey ; Google is everywhere. I find the idea of real time searches so scary! Even with Twitter & YouTube it can be scary to be trending but on Google… i can’t even imagine what mess that’d be.

Well I think when it comes to Naver, celebrities with new songs and dramas would want to be on that list. In fact if I am remembering correctly there is a list which tells how popular stars have been online. It is the equivalent of trending on Twitter I guess. So celebrities would like that popularity.

I actually use DuckDuckGo. I got a little too freaked out when I would search something and a day later get a bunch of spam mail for what I was searching for. DuckDuckGo used to suck, but now it’s almost as good as Google. If I can’t find something, I’ll google it, but that only happens about once a month now.

No real-time searches, but the search suggestions on Google are entertaining when you start typing something.

I don’t know this one. I just googled it ^^. That is scary, I got really freaked out recently when I googled something and related content appeared on my YT recommended videos… I’ll try it to see

Yeah I was gonna say people sea&rich some weird stuff but I’m sure someone is thinking that of my searches. 🙂

I wouldn’t get freaked out about Google searches relating to YT videos. Google owns them. What freaks me out is when you are talking about something in a room to your friends and you see advertisements for it on Facebook or in your Insta feed.

        2

That happened to me a couple times and it’s super weird. I was speaking to my friend in person about getting a record player. Then later that day I got an ad for it on Instagram. Really had me paranoid for a bit.

I searched on my phone & it turned on my computer. & I’m not connected to google on my phone. So that was really weird. I never give my phone number to mail adresses & so on. So I guess it doesn’t matter if I tell them or not they’re gonna find it anyway :/

Most of the time it’s your account, not necessarily your number. My Instagram uses my secondary email while my Facebook uses my primary email. Somehow since Facebook bought Ig they have linked.

I use google mostly. Currently I’m also on Naver for drama info. It is interesting. Because on a drama Naver profile page, viewers can leave comments and chat there. It is in real time. As for the real time searches, I recall seeing lists for most commented and most viewed. And it seems that the list is updated at a certain interval. Naver is in korean, so its kinda hard to navigate. Google translate is helpful but it can only help to some extent.

Woah that is so nice! Is it more like a dramabeans situation or the random YT video comments kind? That’s so interesting. I love statistics so that makes me really happy ^^ I can’t speak korean :/ but that makes me want to get better at it even quicker

It’s like a chatroom. A live chatroom. They also have comment sections for articles and videos. I think the one that we usually see translated are article comments. Because article comments can be rated (up vote/down vote).

Another interesting thing to me is the number of articles that pop out for one drama. There are so many articles. Usually the content is similar but posted accross various sites/platforms. There will be one main article and that article will be the one with most comments and responses. The others are duplicates. Why I find this interesting is…it looks to me that they take their dramas seriously. In my country it is not usual for an in depth drama analysis or drama theory article. But in Korea, they release new drama stills and an article will follow.

This is all from observation. I’m not sure how it really works or if my interpretatiom of what I observe is correct 😆

My country’s dramas are so bad nobody watches them let alone articles about it…

That sounds like so much fun even if I don’t participate just reading it must be really exciting

It actually is interesting to read. And Kviewers comments and chats are also interesting to read. Now I can see how viewer comments might influence a drama outcome. Viewers can directly give input and opinions, its kinda hard to not be swayed by public opinion.

@katakwasabi I used to be annoyed at drama producers & writers that were too easily influenced but now looking at some preproduced dramas I wish they could change stuff.
Now it makes sense how they find opinions about it, I thought it was only by SNS

I use Ecosia! It plants trees after every 45 searches. It’s not as good as Google but it’s good enough. If I ever need to search something more advanced, ie. for essays and uni work, I just switch to Google. ^^

Yeah I’ve heard about it! That must be a lot of trees. I’ll try to use that one

    I use Yahoo/Google and I use Daum to check out drama ratings/info. Sometimes I’ll use Naver to compare. I skim over the real time rankings, but I can barely read Korean so most things go over my head. I wish I could have seen the live rankings with YG in it though. XD;

I just noticed Yahoo has a “Trending Now” on their main page, but I never followed it. It looked more like an ad. I’m probably just used to Korean search engines having the rankings.

    1
    2

Hahaha I wish I’d seen them too. They’ll probably be trending again soon, keep an eye on it :))

I haven’t used Yahoo for over 10 years I think.

Haha I actually try to use Yahoo more than Google. I like to browse the news and especially read user comments on random articles. LOL But I’m using Google more lately since it is everywhere and already loaded on my phone/maps, etc.

I use an app for a local newspaper to keep up with the news & same since google is already prechosen I just use it automatically without thinking to be honest

YG, YGent, & Lee Seung Hoon are trending on Naver 😆

I am actually surprised reading the comments that people do use search engines besides Google. I thought that only China and S korea might have their own search engines. Google is global and I don’t know if it is considered a monopoly because people use it by choice but it has pretty much kicked all its competitors out of the race. I remember the time msn and yahoo used to be big and now people use them to go to google. But the whole convergence thing is actually creepy. I already don’t like facebook, insta, whatsapp trio and I along with a few friends have noticed that conversations on whatsapp do lead to ads on facebook. At this stage it is hard for me to believe that these IT companies don’t know much about us.

Same I thought I might get a few Yahoo & Bing (does this still actually exist?) answers & maybe obscure ones in a specific country but yeah
I almost never use WhatsApp, only for class group projects. So that hasn’t happened to me yet but I wouldn’t be surprised. And the other 2 creep me out.
They probably know more about me that I’d like; it is really scary they could do anything with all that info and it’s not like there is any competitor to block them

Having family all over the world and friends across the country has made whatsapp my main choice for messaging. But most people prefer it because it is very and goes beyong messaging i. e. Video and voice call with no cost. But i wonder what cost do people actually pay for sth that’s apparently free.

        3

“All across the country” do you have to pay differently when contacting someone that’s in another state/ part of the country?

          0
          2

Well if there are different networks then yes. You pay differently if you call or text someone who is not using the same network as yours, perhaps a higher charge.

When I think of all the money I had to spend to call abroad & I couldn’t even do it from home :// here almost all “home phones” can call abroad “home phones” for free that’s why I usually use that

          1
          2

Yeah but hardly anyone uses the home phone now here. Even if one does, the one you want to talk to might not. Even my grandma uses a cell phone since years.

@wapzy Yeah I think they keep it for that sole purpose because it costs more to use the Internet

I think if you use Google Chrome your default search engine is Google. So it might also come down to the kind of browser you use

Even if it’s not google chrome a lot of browsers use google automatically

      1

That’s something I thought about when I was trying different engines. I use Chrome browser and the address bar automatically works as a Google search engine. Which made me realize how odd it is for me now to have to search on an actual site. I can’t remember the last time I went to the actual Google site besides to look at one of their logo doodles.

      0
      1

Yeah that’s true. I mainly go on the actual site when I open a new tab on my computer only.
I love the doodles! I thought it was only there to be pretty but now that you say it it must be to bring people in

I mostly use Google. Sometimes Bing, if it is the search engine set by default on the browser (but then, we can change it to whichever we want).
I understand it is not the same, but aren’t the search results and trending topics (in search sites, as well as on social media like FB, Twitter, etc) work around similar ideas as the real time search ranking? I mean, even on Google/Twitter/etc, one can see the popular topics being discussed, or the most recent (most watched?) articles about a scandal, etc.

I don’t use FB so I wouldn’t know. But I guess it is kind of like twitter trending. But with twitter it is completely different demographic not that many people use it compared to google& so on. It’s not on the main page. I mean well you can very easily see it but it’s different when you just see that info wether you’d like yo know or not

It’s not like the search results. It’s completely different seeing that there are a lot of articles about a scandal doesn’t tell you how many people are searching about that, how it compares to other people’s searches. With the ranking it tells you that basically the majority of people on the internet are focusing on this right now.
Can you see popular/trending topics on searching sites because I don’t. I’ve never seen that (except for the Korean system).

Knowing something is kind of hot right now and knowing THIS is the hottest thing is different in my opinion. I’m not sure but I imagine the info is more filtered when it’s not live but just hot in general

I remember once on Running Man, Yoo Jae Suk said he was amazed that the U.S doesn’t have things like real-time searches. I was amazed they had it. lol.

Without dramas & Kpop I wouldn’t even know this existed
