I have 2 questions about Nokdu Flower for those who have finished it. I’ll put them in the comments to avoid spoiling.

    1. Why does Yi Hyun’s accent change near the end of the show?
It becomes very similar to North Korean accent which I have seen in some shows also exists in some parts of SK, but it wasn’t YH’s original accent. Any thoughts?

    2. Why does YK cut his hair in the end?
From what I have seen in sageuks this past decade cutting one’s hair is prohibited and a sign of defying your parents/sovereign, or being rejected by them. We can clearly see he is on the best of terms with his mother. We don’t know his feelings towards the weak king, and I can’t see him cutting his hair to defy his father? Maybe it is perhaps to show that he has turned Christian like JI? Any other theory?

Re: hair, I thought it was sign of moving with times or rejection of Confucian values as Confucians scholars were very hostile toward Donghak movment.

I read some more and the hair are most likely connected to 3rd Gabo reforms and “The Short Hair Act”.

OH! Thank you! I had read a bit on the revolution but hadn’t came across this act yet.
