The charm of first love stories – A Love So Beautiful appreciation post

I just finished binge watching this wonderful series, and I have nothing but praise for this drama. You are so worth the sleepless four nights ^_^

A Love So Beautiful takes you back to that wonderful time of youth – young love, childish heartbreaks, jealousy, forming friendships, imagining the uncertain future. Even though we pretty much followed a girl’s journey on how she ends up becoming her first love’s fiancée, the drama did not forget to show how wonderful it is to be young, to live in the moment, to create memories with strangers who, sometimes, will end up to be the most important people in your life.

The plot is certainly not something new – a girl who falls for the smartest boy in class, and boy acts indifferent to her and her feelings for him. But what makes it a gem of its own is how it manages to flesh out the characters. They just feel so genuine – so damn relatable.

Xiaoxi and Jiang Chen’s relationship is interesting to me because theirs isn’t really what I would consider childhood best friends turn sweethearts. They are individuals who happened to live in the same building for many years and went to elementary, middle, senior high school together. They don’t really have that same childhood connection that I felt from Young Jae and Shi Won from Reply 1997, or Trash and Na Jung from Reply 1994, or Taek and Duk Seon from Reply 1988. Their dynamic is different in that we didn’t really get to see how they were like all those years growing up – Reply series are perfect storytellers in this area. Instead, we are shown that even though they don’t hang out after school hours, nor do they eat and share meals together every single time, there remains comfort and level of understanding between them, and it’s most likely because they have become a habit – to see each other every single day of their lives whether they want to or not.

Xiaoxi chases Jiang Chen wherever he goes; she wears her heart on her sleeve and displays her great affection for him. We, then, have Jiang Chen, who in the beginning of the story, appears to be so uninterested to this girl, who never left his field of vision since they were kids, and seems to be looking down on her too. But by Episode 1 epilogue, we see that her feelings are, in fact, very much reciprocated. Their entire high school and uni years were spent in growing their budding feelings for each other, and discovering how being together became so comfortable that it is so easy to take that for granted.

Jiang Chen’s interest in Xiaoxi remained to be so fascinating to me throughout the episodes, and I kept thinking to myself how the hell did he end up falling for her so bad (as cute as it was, I needed to rationale this, and darnit, I don’t have any recap websites to let me read and learn this!). I thank the drama gods that this did allow us to see the chain of events through his eyes and I completely agree with his reasoning – he fell for her because she is the constant in his life. Everyone around him that he cared for left him for all different reasons. He is aloof and uninterested in anything because of the nature he grew up in. So it does make sense that the comfort Xiaoxi brings in that when he turns around, she is there has become the reason that he loves her. No other girls would simply made him feel the way he feels for her because of that.

I am so happy to see that you like A Love So Beautiful!! It is definitely one of my top 5 C-dramas. I do appreciate that we got to see little bits and pieces of JC’s feelings toward XX throughout the series, but I really wished that the show didn’t wait so long to give us that “confession” scene when he told BS over drinks about how he felt toward her over the years. It did make so much sense but I wished the viewers were clued in a few episodes earlier.

Ohhhhhh @kimbapnoona I love it a lot 😭😭😭 I’m going through such a hard case of withdrawal syndrome for a drama I only got to see in less than a week. 😭 This is my second C-Drama, and it definitely is sitting as one of the top favourites for me! My only regret is that I had waited this long to discover such a gem drama 😌

Yes, it had its frustrating moments, and I had a strong dislike of Jiang Chen in those moments when he would get tounge-tied, shut people off, and not really let anyone in and understand him whenever he is conflicted. That Included Xiaoxi. And I agree when you said you wished we weren’t kept in the dark till the end to see his point of view. But to be really honest, I completely forgot those frustrating moments once I finally figured him out and realized that he did have such a great character development! Huehehe He went from being this Uber obnoxious tsundere guy to someone so dependable, who willingly opens up everything to his significant other. I forgave all his wrongdoings after I saw how hard he worked to get her back! Lol. It’s amazing what great finale episodes do to your brain and emotions. It completely wiped out all my thoughts that he so didn’t deserve Xiaoxi.

He made an effort. He knew he can’t afford to lose her and went all out. It made me forgive him because he realized he did wrong. And he realized he had to fix it to get the girl. His efforts were sincere. You are right last episodes made us forget all the crappy things he did in between.

YES!!!!!!!!!! Omg Those moments after they broke up – he flew back to try the relationship again and get back with her! But He chickened out by what he saw 💔

He also would give her a ring for no reason other than he missed her so much, but couldn’t say that out loud. Xiaoxi, lovely and amazing girl she is, wouldn’t put up with his mixed signals and was like “I’m changing my number, so you don’t call me by mistake” like omg 😭😭😭😭

When he officially went back home, he was a complete different man with a mission to get her back – I was weak. Not to forget to mention how he took all the trash out of his trunk into his back seat just to make sure she sits next to him in his car! Lol. Argh. Siigh too many beautiful moments to mention😔😔

You finished it! I was just thinking about you last evening if you finished binging 🙂

That last episode from his point of view was everything to me.

Such a lovely little gem. I was so angry with him during the break up but then when I see how much he needed her i couldn’t be angry anymore. She was his northern star.

Yeeeep! I did 😭 I started writing this looong essay and making gifts as soon as I finished it and was wide awake at 3am posting all this lmao 😂 What is sleep anyways! That word is so foreign to me.

When you said the ending made up for its angsty, I wholeheartedly agree! We honestly need more dramas like this where we can get both sides of how things played out. It felt so complete to see that ending.

That GIF!! That scene where he hold her chin while she dozed off.
And that other scene when she falls down after tripping – he gently picks her up and takes her home. Even though he doesn’t show much affections his actions were so gentle.

Auuuughh!!!! They were sooooo many gif-worthy moments in this drama it hurt to choose! He was gentle the way he caught her head, like I cannot! 😵There was this moment too during that time when she misplaced the money, how she cutely poked his arm asking him to help out. He shut his eyes and gave in – I mean how many times has this happened in the course of their lives that she seemed so comfortable in asking him for help?

They both had a connection. He always knew what she needed. He knew what upsets her. He knew her quirks. I never had second lead syndrome. Not once.
Another scene which totally gave me the feels was the window cleaning scene. The way he lifted her and put her down and made a cleaning stick for her. All that in no time and so gently. No fuss. Just quietly he cared.
When I watched last year I was in the same state. Searching for all possible write ups on this drama. I enjoyed fangirlverdicts review.
This drama will always have a special place in my heart.

Thanks for that – will check fangirlverdicts review tonight! This weekend will obviously be all about rewatching A Love So Beautiful, watching tons of fanmade MVs, and digging around Google one more time for decent (by decent I meant essay/novel like) reviews lol.

Omg!!! Yes!!! That window cleaning scene is so gold. Thanks for mentioning that. When Lu Yang told her to stand on that table instead cuz she’s not a girl anyway! 😤 His antenna is all up watching her next moves. He is always gentle handling/protecting her, I wish that also reflected on how he talked to her. Speaking of eavesdropping! Let’s go back to ep 1 when Lu Yang told them that they should make a group together and name it – Jiang Chen mentioned that same group name Lu Yang told Xiaoxi and Lu Yang was like – wow you’re listening in, nice to know you know about me yada yada yada. Little did he know, it was all because he was talking to Xiaoxi!!! Gaaaah!

I second fangirlverdict.com’s review. She’s the one that convinced me to watch this. Then there was @modernflapper’s tumblr gifs and videos on vimeo. See if she still has them on her wall. She’s not been active for a while. I hope she’s ok.

In Episode 23, he implicitly called her his miracle and destiny because the world is no where near the size of her bathroom, he cannot just randomly meet someone who happened to be living in the same building and went through all that childhood years with him. He is destined to meet and fall for her; that it’s a miracle he’s finally found that somebody who never leaves him no matter what happened.

I really disliked that part when they had to break up over petty misunderstandings that could have been easily resolved had he owned up and said whatever he was bottling in. But after seeing his point of view, I completely appreciated their fight, and I couldn’t have wished for a better angsty break up. He got way too comfortable thinking his “constant” would forever remain by his side no matter what he did, no matter what he said. Xiaoxi called him out on this that he cannot always assume she knows what he is thinking; she is not a mind reader, though what a great talent that would have been if we could. He needs to treat her better and make her feel a priority if she really is one in his life. Not just someone he will remember when he’s not tied up anymore. He took his “constant” for granted.

Three years later, he grew up, learned from his mistakes, and the next time he ran into her, he made sure he never made the same mistake twice. No matter how busy he is at work, he takes time off to be by her side and commits into the relationship more. It’s so adorable that he did the most un-Jiang Chen things just to win her back – I mean really, show off your fake girlfriend? LOL (Though whoever advised him that was proper needs to be kicked in the shin *eyeing at you Ms. Surgeon*)

This scene, omg, so hot, so sweet. “Just do it already!” Oh, did I say that out loud? Yes, yes I did.

Indeed hot!😍 but I’m glad the series did imply that they did it – gah that last episode was just the best. All I did was just smile, grin, and try to read them subtitles.

I don’t really have much anything to say about my girl Xiaoxi, and that is not a bad thing – I loved her from day 1. She knows what she likes, and she works hard to get it. She fell for him when he was helping a boy to pay for his stuff. She says she didn’t need anymore reasons than that, it just is. And I completely agree. I also love the positivity and brightness she brings to Jiang Chen. She is a perfect match for him. When she felt that she was receiving the short end of the stick in her relationship with Jiang Chen, she ended things with him fast even though it broke her into many pieces. She knows her worth and won’t settle as a second priority in his life. Now that I think of it, I think I would agree when Jiang Chen says that he loves and needs Xiaoxi more than she does him. He was miserable for three years, lost his equilibrium, and all that was left for him was memories of her.

Overall, A Love So Beautiful is another series that has now a special place in my heart. I`m glad it didn’t bring me a rollercoaster ride of emotions (I honestly need to take a break from this). Rather it gave me a nice nostalgia show, and I am grinning so much to see everything falls in its place for the five individuals I ended up caring for so much. I am missing all of them, and a day has only passed TT____TT

Kudos to both Shen Yue and Hu Yi Tian who were both relatively newbies in 2017. They both really fully inhabited these characters with so much heart!!

They were amazing! This is my second Shen Yue drama, and I look forward to many more dramas she will star in and take me by surprise again by how much I enjoy watching her play her character! And of course I can never forget to mention the rest of the gang – I love all five of them. I couldn’t have asked for a better cast. 😌

Would like to save this space now to the other beautiful couple in this drama

Totally teared up in this scene. TT____TT They’ve come a long way to get to this chapter of their life. Might have teared up too every time I see those rings around their finger.

This such an amazing essay. *cries* When I was younger, I used to love stories like this. Manga, drama, movie, animation, book, whatever. I adored this love story. Reading your essay reminds me of what I once was like, and how I wish I could be like that again.

*excuse me while I cry in a corner – this was a very lovely essay. I think at one point, I’d have adored this drama.*

Thank you very much forreading my entire essay!! ☺️ I get very sentimental over high school stories and how innocent and youthful they are, but I think this drama completely wrecked me (in a great way) when I got to this part. Them five kids grew up, went into the real world, and now they’re at the age where they get married and create their own family. 😭😭 I recently just got engaged too to my longtime boyfriend, so this drama had my emotions all over the place much more. I watch it and I keep remembering how it was like when we first knew each other, then started dating, had those fair share of petty fights, to right to this moment. 😭 it’s very rare to find a drama that connects you on so many levels – A love so beautiful did that to me.

OMG Congratulations!! On your engagement. 😊😊😊🎂 I guess also this drama is perfectly suited to your mood & feelings at the moment. It’s amazing how sometimes reel life can move us in this manner. *hugs* Wish you & your hubby-to-be a long and happy life together! 😊

    This drama 😍😍

I don’t know if you already found this, but someone translated the novel! :

The novel is quite different from the drama but it gave deeper insight to the story!

Just finished Chap 4 😐😐 The novel does bring back the feel of the drama that I do love…. except with how chap 4 ended! Why Jiang Chen! What do you mean “introduce me to a girlfriend” “someone taller and skinner than do will do”!!!!! 😡😡 thank goodness they didn’t make Jiang Chen like this guy in the drama. It’s like he never changed at all in the novel. Still reading, just thought I’d drop by and vent my little anger at Jiang Chen novel version. Huehehe.

Hahahaha. You were not the only one who hated jiang chen in that stage. But keep reading, you’ll soon fall in love with him. 😁

Chap 35 now. I still don’t forgive Jiang Chen for being such a tsundere, but 😍☺️😍☺️😍 I had to pause reading and take a break because he’s so naughty I cannot 😵 it’s hard to continue reading lol. His hormones are just raging bad I had to stop to try and get my sanity back😅

A few chapters back he asked Xiaoxi to move in with him, but she said no. He respected that. Now, he’s got his suitcase with his clothes, asked Xiaoxi to make room in her closet for his clothes – fml Jiang Chen, so smooth boi if girlfriend isn’t moving in with him, he’ll move in with her instead 😂😂😂 Xiaoxi doesn’t even notice how smooth this is ahhhhh~ seriously. This novel focuses more on the aftermath of getting back together – why didn’t we have a season 2? 😭😭 the novel spells season 2 all over it.

Gahhh, Jiang Chen is so thirsty and yes, very smooth and very persistent. Hahaha. He finally got the his chance to get xiao xi back and he wouldnt let go!

Im glad you are enjoying the novel. And i always frecommend to watch the web drama first and then the book. Because it fits perfectly as the 2nd part of the drama!

            So, happy reading!! 😍

Just finished reading ☺️ This series is simply beautiful and amazing, I fall for it more and more. Both novel and drama are written so well, it hurts to read and watch. Thank you so much @pinklolipop for linking me the novel – so heartwarming, I fall for Jiang Chen and Xiaoxi more. Their relationship is so mundane, and that makes it so relatable. The chapters have no grand plots, but still manage to move you because it connects you so well with the couple, what makes them happy, what makes them anxious.

I will keep visiting the website from time to time as it is still currently in the works – I read the translator said there’s still 8 chapters before we can close the books. I really appreciated the side stories as we get to see both POVs. So nice to see that the high school plots finally made their way on paper – after chap 50, I honestly thought that their high school plot was majority a drama work. It was so nice reading it while imagining the exact events that happened in the drama. Thank you once again! 🥰

I haven’t read your essay yet. But this show made me write one too! Ok, off to read yours. I know you had good taste, but this confirms it! It’s my favorite c-drama ever and I’ve seen a few (growing up, dubbed in Vietnamese, was not impressed).

Huehehehehhe, throw me a good flick my way, and I’ll be happy camping in my room again and binge watch!😅

I’ve only seen two C-dramas so I’ve got really nothing to compare, but overall this is def one of my top faves!

I couldn’t stop smiling whilst reading your essay, you captured everything I love about the show.
I agree, I feel that Jiang Chen needed/cared for her so much more, because of his family situation and how they had essentially neglected him. The only person to really care is xiaoxi and he took that for granted.
I’m glad he came back ready to put her first ahead of everything.

Thank you for reading!!! I didn’t think I would love this drama so much. When I started this on Saturday, I thought it was cute and fluff, something to watch now that I’ve dropped another K-drama. Then episodes went by, it got more serious, I became emotionally invested in not just Xiaoxi and Jiang Chen’s love story, but also Lu Yang and Jing Xiao’s, and Bu Song’s finding his own self worth amidst pursuing his sports career. I couldn’t stop watching and I’m just glad that it ended in such a way I couldn’t have asked for a better ending. I mean I’m even totally fine that i didn’t get to see their wedding – I thought that ending with them holding hands on the street gave such peace in me – that they’ll be fine and they’re so in it for the long haul ☺️
