Beanie level: Noble idiot

Every drama has something annoying the just irritates you!!
Mine is a locked PAPER Door 🤣🤣🤣

What’s yours???

When a scene starts at one time of day and ends in another. For example, the characters get in a car to go somewhere nearby. It’s midday. But when they arrive it’s completely dark. It’s a continuity issue with the filming but it always annoys me!

    11
    3

Mine goes way back to an old show named Phoenix. Escaping from a warehouse fire, the 2ML (the actual ML to me!) runs right past a fire extinguisher. It’s been almost 20 years and I still haven’t gotten over it 🤦🏼‍♀️

    9
    0

Mine is the lack of peripheral vision and the over-developed eavesdropping hearing ability of the characters 😂

    10
    1

But when the walls are made of paper they can’t hear anything haha

      9
      1

        LOL.
If it’s too convenient it takes all the subtlety of the plot away and it annoys me.

        3

Even though character styling is something I enjoy very much in each drama, my biggest pet peeve is still WHERE they would store all of their fancy high end designer clothes, when they’re living in a tiny rooftop room flat/have a small room in their parents‘ homes. (And how they would afford all of it, too!) 🤪

    5
    1

Yes! For me, it’s winter coats in particular. How many regular people (I.e., non-Goblin, non-Chaebol) have multiple bulky winter coats? In Pinnochio, it was another day, another winter coat for both leads. Besides how could you afford them, where did you hang all of them?

      4
      2

        LOL! 💯
I was wondering whether I should explicitly mention the “wool coat of the day” collections in my comment 😂 This was also strange in Something in the Rain (she has such a small cupboard), Just Between Lovers (aren’t they both broke?!), Business Proposal… I could go on 🤣

        1
        2

          Yes, please go on 😂

          1
          2

Ha! Okay, Business Proposal (that cupboard is practically empty when ML had to hide inside); When the Weather is Fine (the available space in the one suitcase she brings with her must basically be taken up by her hat/mittens/scarf collection alone! Must be Mary Poppins’ bag reborn?); Her Private Life (she has a pant suit in every color of the rainbow, yet her teensy apartment only seems to accommodate idol merch?); What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim (granted, she lives frugal and repeatedly wears outfits, yet even those cannot fit into that one cupboard if chaebols easily fit in there as well) – okay, the common denominator here seems to be Park Minyoung, she must be a outfit-witch (… and I didn’t mention Healer yet) 😆
Itaewon Class (we don’t see her room I think, but Kim Dami’s character lives in a flat with her mum, yet has all the coats); same with FL of One Spring Night (shares a tiny flat with her sister, who – you guessed it – also comes with an outerwear collection); another vast outerwear collection, too, in I’m Not a Robot (while, again, she has the tiniest of rooms inside her family’s flat, where all place is already occupied by her “inventions”); …. 🤔😂

I guess, I cannot remember more specific examples at this point, but there definitely are more…

            2

            Good ones, sonai 😁

            1
            0

Bravo!! I find it interesting that in Sageuk dramas it’s never cold- maybe they wore animal skins and they can’t show that. There was one where FL had the cutest winter hat- I can’t remember

          2
          0

I recently watched weightlifting Fairy and ML was young so not too many over coats but lots and lots of jackets. I do love the ones with Sherpa though🥰

        2
        0

It is definitely the scenes when the ML remembers his interaction with the other character. For some reason the shown flashback also features the ML’s face.

Also, when a character reminiscences about another character with whom they supposedly have a 10+ history. Guess, which scenes do they remember? Yes, the ones from the previous two days (aka. from the other episodes).

Learned a New Kdrama phrase-
Noble Idiocy
I have seen it in shows, have hated it but never knew it had an actual term.

What drama used it the worst??
I think mine is Legend of the Blue Sea

The bickering between him and Jae-yi in OBY is so fun to watch. When she woke up from the concussion caused by the wound to her head, and was thanking the CP for being by her side, Tae-kang emphasised that he was there the whole time too, and it was hilarious 😂

Beanie Question?!? Do you celebrate April Fool’s Day in your country?

Today in the US is a unofficial holiday called April Fool’s Day. It’s a day of pranks and jokes. And on social media especially people post false information- saying it’s funny. It’s good to remember today not to believe anything you read.
A Kdrama site posted this about Lee Min Ho getting married. I am only showing the first page of 4 that talked about his love and his wedding date. The same site posted later that it was an April Fools Day post- meaning it is FALSE!
So I go back to my question- does your country celebrate this or would you have fallen for this joke/lie/hoax ???

“Feeling insecure about Doctor Slump.
Just finished ep. 7 and I think I’m in a place where I can be happy with this ending. Great friendship has been developed, mental issues have been discovered and are being treated, couple realizes how important their friend relationship is. Families are not helpful, murder is solved. I’m really feeling in a very sweet way this couple will work together for a friendship. ”
My problem is that I feel it is in a good place to be happy and walk away. I don’t know if I want the angst of an up and down, off and on 9 episodes. Of course I also know how it ends so that also makes me feel like my watch is complete.
Recommendations???

There are a few minor rollercoaster moments in those later episodes that may peak your interest. I found them worth watching.

    2
    1

I say go for it! All things aren’t quite as solved as you think and there are a lot more fun stuff ahead assuming you aren’t turned off by the cutsie lovey dovey/aegyo or drinking. Note, actually from 13-16 there is only 1 drunk scene in 4 episodes (possibly 1 additional flashback too) so once people are more healed and in a better place they don’t resort to the alcohol escapism as much as when they were in the dumps.

    5
    1

Episode 9 and 10 are probably the best episodes, followed very closely by episode 14. The last two basically ties everything up in a neat package. But all of them have tons of fun moments and deep conversations that truly touch the heart.
Spoiler: Nothing has been actually resolved.

    5
    1

I think you should continue..there are great moments about them in coming episodes..you can watch until ep 14…last two episodes are just them being happy and tying some ends..I loved it till the end because I loved the couple

I have been going back and watching a few dramas that did not receive positive reviews when they were airing live.
As a fairly new kdrama viewer I had relied heavily on reviews to influence my viewing experience. I love reading the different opinions of others, especially on the same show. It is fascinating to see how different people are.
After watching for over a year now, and over 80 shows, I have decided to trust my gut or my feelings more in the choices I make to watch.
I have learned that it\’s ok to drop a show if you don\’t like it and not feeling like you are giving up on something you spent time on.
One of the dramas I had passed up on earlier last year was My Demon. I was drawn to this show because of the amount of press it received. And with that press came the shots of the main couple. The best way to describe this amazing couple is BEAUTIFUL! So I will use that word to help with my review.
My Demon: A Beautiful Experience
Beautiful Couple- In outward appearance and inward kindness and love
Beautiful Eyes- some of the best shots of gazing into each others eyes ever
Beautiful Kissing Scenes- For a brief moment in time, they seemed to really have feelings for each other, which then helps the viewers to love this show even more.
Beautiful Clothing- the wardrobe for this show was extensive. Every scene involved 1 or more different outfits, especially for the FL.
Beautiful Fuzzy Sweaters- They needed their own shout-out
Beautiful Outdoor Photography- I especially liked the ocean scenes
Beautiful Sets- The Clock room was amazing
Beautiful Opening Credits Song- One of my favorite songs from a drama. Also great OST
Beautiful Episode 13- I kept thinking as watching that this couple would be amazing in a Sageuk drama. My wish was granted in this episode as we received the backstory to their relationship. I loved that most of the story took place at the river. Her light green Hanbok was my favorite outfit of the series. And their tragic end gave meaning to the overall show.
Dark- FL Family was truly dark and showed us what real evil was. I must admit that at ep. 10 and on I FF though anything to do with the family as it was just upsetting and gruesome.
Dark- The idea behind the Demon could be nothing but Dark. But the balance between this and the light in the beauty of the rest of the show was a highlight. And the progression throughout the show of who the Demon chose was interesting.
Dark- The portrayal of God was a much darker version than I personally believe in or am comfortable with
Dark- I found the use of religion very interesting in this show. Especially in the Joseon Era as a method of class equality. My religion has a history of persecution so it was especially significant to see this added into the story.
Beautiful ending- Happy but very interesting life ahead of them. One thought I couldn\’t get out of my mind was are children possible?? Was the last scene of him playing with a child fortelling?

I\’m so happy I trusted my intuition and spent happy hours watching this Beautiful Drama.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that if you’ve watched 80+ k-dramas, you are no longer “new.” 😉 That’s a solid grounding in all things k-drama! 👏👏👏

There was a time when I had time and wanted to watch something that didn’t get that much hype (both good and bad). I decided to pick Reach of Sincerity up and it turned out to be one very very lovely show. I began to kind of like YIN and LDW ever since.

Oh yes, I know it as Touch Your Heart. It really was sweet. I liked their relationship much better than on Goblin. And I learned so much about the dating taboo of stars.

80 in a year is definitely expert level … very rich in beans!?

      1

Not many beans because they were older classic dramas. The kind of shows found in the “What show would you suggest to a newcomer” type of catagory.
I should probably say that about 15 of that number are rewatch, but time was till spent and enjoyed so I count it. Also I had surgery and was in bed for 14 weeks so that gave me the time haha

@23new2kdrama He’s rapidly growing into quite a good little actor, and he is a delight to watch!

Kids in control: In The Beauty Inside the FL temporarily transforms physically into different bodies, including young children, but mentally remains herself and in charge of her staff and surroundings. (I do not recommend that drama.) The FL of See You In My 19th Life regains her memories of all her previous lives when she’s about 9 or 10, and effectively functions as an adult who knows a lot about the past and is able to some extent to manipulate her and others’ futures by using that knowledge after that, although she doesn’t have supernatural powers. I keep thinking there’s a child god figure in Goblin, but when I look back at the cast list nothing rings a bell.

@IsaGC You’re right, it’s not that different in English. ‘Handsome’ is commonly used to describe people (and animals) who are not adults, as well as things, places, etc. Describing or referring to a child as ‘young man’ or ‘young lady/woman’ is utterly commonplace in English – sometimes it’s exaggerated politeness and sometimes it’s tongue-in-cheek. It’s often used by teachers or officials for kids in transition between early childhood and adulthood to express respect for them as individuals, especially for males when calling them a ‘boy’ could have negative connotations (racist, for example, and obviously that’s not the case here).

But it’s also instantly recognizable as the way our parents called us when we were in trouble: “young man, stop that and get over here right now!” 😂

      3
      1

In Spain the adjective “guapo” is used even for babies, and it’s not new by any means.
There is an informal meaning too, which would be like “great, beautiful, cool” for things like cars, apartments, houses, clothes… But that is really informal and I guess young people started to say it in the 80ies.

        2
        0

The famous boy who was dressed as a girl to play Nation’s only beauty’s son in her comeback drama…because his eyes matched his… and nobody bothered that a young male child is being asked to play a girl’s role which can affect him

He is a child, a small boy of 8 years old. A child can be described as cute or adorable. He is not a young man nor is he handsome. Am I too old or the world has changed that much?

    0
    1

I don’t find it strange. Maybe because I’m used to it. In Spain has always been very common to use the adjectives “guapo” and “guapa” to describe children too.

      3
      1

I am not a linguist by any means but I respectfuly disagree. My first language is not english and I know and think that some words in some languages have more meanings than their counterpart in english. For example the word “handsome” has the definition in dictionary as word to describe a good-looking man (some have is as physically attractive man) or a large quantity. “Guapo” or “guapa” in spanish can be used to describe someone young also, not only an adult. Although in the past handsome has been used to describe women, in our modern time it is mostly used to describe a men. Now, a young boy of 8 years old is not a man or even a young man. He is a boy, a child and many other words can be used to describe a good-looking boy.
The entire phrase, “handsome young man”, can be interpreted in more ways in english and I think there are better words that can be used. If used in the future tense, as in he will become one, I can understand. But not in the present. If we are that careful with words and how we use them nowadays, I think we should be extra careful when we use them to describe children.

The Uncanny Counter features a kid who is the afterlife-counterpart of one of the counters, so decently powerful. The Kidnapping Day has an 11 year old girl who is nothing if not in charge pretty much the whole time 😁

Other than that I can’t think of very many. There are definitely some powerful kids in Tale of the Nine-tailed and I guess you could count some of the spirits in Revenant? I feel like I’m forgetting a big one though…

I had never heard of this. In the US pie day is 3-14. (as in a math symbol)

    2
    1

It actually started out in Japan as just a commercial confectionery day, and then times and cultures began to evolve and also change the context of things, and since then, it’s become the White Day we know now. I think Korea is definitely the place that made it big, and since then, it’s been celebrated in other places like China. One of my favorite Chinese actor/singer actually recently starred in a “White Day” themed ad for Ralph Lauren (for which he’s spokesperson for), so it’s definitely one of those things that are growing bigger and getting more attention even from people and things across borders

Beloved cast and writer … try mdl for their previous works. 😊👍

    3

My drama list is my favorite site to check actors, directors, writers…
And Asian Wiki is very useful too (the photos of each character are an extra point).

      3
      2

MDL is my second most visited site after DB. 😊 It’s great to check out upcoming works of our favorite artists and has some super awesome great articles and apparently also an ultra fan guide of Lee Je-hoon. 😂
AW works wonderfully well with their in-character pictures of artists, especially when we are unable to identify the actors from their mdl pics. For example Sextretary Kim from Perfect  Marriage Revenge. 🤪

        4
        2

        I always use asian wiki

Actually, we don’t know what happened during these 3 years.

    2

I am coming to the conclusion that I low-key don’t like this writer. While the premise – ML stuck in marriage and as a lawyer of every type of evil kdrama Chaebol – is hilarious by itself, the show for some reason feels artificial and the emotions manufactured.

    8
    0

I think a lot of actors very sensibly took a much needed break during covid. Why take unnecessary risks just to make a drama? All the things that lower immunity and increase risk aka how to film a drama; not eating/sleeping well due to the schedule, hanging around loads of people, kissing strangers scenes…

    3
    1

Whenever I see an actor I don’t know I google it then look on their Asian wiki page often to find they were in a drama I watched in my early K-drama days when I didn’t know anyone. I watched a lot of web dramas and although they are often not listed on an actor’s Asian wiki page I have seen a lot of the younger actors in their rookie phase in those bite sized roles.

    6

Have you watched the premiere and asking? Or just in general?

Regardless of the recency of their last dramas, both of these actors are outstanding at their craft.

    3
    1

The FL is the IT girl right now. My Liberation notes was so good. And was also in Fight for my way with Park Seo Jun, an underrated, but great drama. ML is the HIGHEST paid kdrama actor. Everything he’s in is gold—he has the Midas touch. Writer has penned some beloved dramas as well. The show itself is gorgeous, beautiful clothes and people. Also, they worked together when they were young and green, so a reunion or sorts.
