Beanie level: The Goblin’s underpants

I’m just thinking glitter jacket should be a topic for DB drama chats 😂

2023 Round-up

Hate is a strong word, so I’m not gonna use it.

The drama you enjoyed but didn’t love as much as Beanies did: Divorce Attorney Shin, Perfect Marriage Revenge.

But I must say, I found PMR very entertaining. It’s just not the drama I will revisit, or will remember for a long time.

About Attorney Shin, while I loved the bromance between the 3 friends, I remember thinking guys over 30yo in real life don’t interact and act like that with each other.

The drama you loved and Beanies didn’t love as much as you did: Taxi Driver, The Worst of Evil.

I LOVED Taxi Driver, it’s no secret. It was also the show that cemented my love for Lee Je Hoon, my 2023 Guilty Pleasure .

The Worst of Evil was the show that revived my love for Ji Chang Wook. And he hasn’t disappointed since. Welcome to Samdalri is now the highlight of the week for me. I stayed up until 2am to watch its newly released episodes on Netflix and it was worth it.

After the busy November without having time for Kdramas, I somehow lost my watching momentum. Thankfully, Welcome to Samdalri has helped me avoid a drama slump. Ji Chang Wook and Shin Hye Sun, my dream pairing, are two powerhouses; their scene presence is strong and their comedic timing is on-point. Side characters are hilarious too. So much fun during the first 2 episodes.

@Seeker Here’s HEALER pointing finger-guns 🤣

Maybe I should give this one a try. I always think SHS has too strong onscreen presence, but JCW might be able to match his with hers.

Ooh! 😍 thank you so so much!! How AWESOME IS THAT. I’m not just bookmarking this, I’m going to make it my homepage so I can admire that beauty everyday. 👏

Uri Wookie is on a roll and how!! I really felt he got back his mojo in The Worst of Evil but Welcome to Samdal-ri makes me think he never lost it. 🤣

    2
    1

So we unfairly doubted him all along? 😂

      2
      1

Even though both his characters and the dramas were somewhat uneven, he did move my heart in some scenes from Backstreet Rookie, The Sound of Magic and If You Wish Upon Me. I just realized I loved his singing and dancing in all of these. Wow, he really has been working hard at entertaining us. The John Travolta dance was of course iconic. So he was good in everything it is just that all these drama were underwhelming. It all came together in The Worst of Evil and now Welcome to Samdal-ri is of course near perfection. 🤞

Claire I know how much you had to introspect to even change your display picture. (It’s awesome btw.) I’m so glad Wookie is making you proud of your display name with his work NOW and not just what he did years ago. I’m literally walking on the clouds. I’m trying to take it one episode at a time but Welcome is making me feel that – okay I can breathe now – no one can take away the goodness of these two episodes. Literally cannot wait for the next 14. If anyone wants to give me gifts for Christmas how about dropping all episodes now for a binge. 🤣

    2
    1

😍 “I can breathe now” is exactly it!! Thank you 😍

Recently I though 12 episodes should be the norm for Kdramas, but I’ll eat my words any moment now, cause I want to see this OTP the longer the better ☺️

Favourite kiss: Cha Eun Woo and Park Gyu Young in A good day to be a dog
I’ve always liked Park Gyu Young, and Cha Eun Woo’s grown on me episode after episode in this show. He’s surely beautiful, but his character also looks smart and acts smart. His smile feels warm and genuine. And he is a good kisser!! I grinned ear to ear watching this steamy kiss. The actors definitely had fun filming this scene 😚😉

Today I got to taste the famous-among-beanies Melona bar for the first time. I found it at a local supermarket, not the one I usually go to. There was no other flavour but this one. It is creamy and has a “sticky” texture that reminds me of a popular ice cream from my home country – the green rice ice cream bars.
I quite like it and hope I’ll be able to taste other flavours as well 😋
And here’re some last jacarandas of the season.

16
18

I’m not sure if I should keep watching Vigilante. The cast, with Nam Jo Hyuk, Yoo Ji Tae, Lee Jun Huyk and Kim So Jin, is too great to miss, but I’m perplexed by episode 1. Gore is one thing (I don’t really need any more gore after Moving and The worst of evil, but if it is necessary for the plot to move forward then I can bear with it), but killing is another thing. Am I supposed to be on the side of killing, in the name of justice?

The fairy iris is in blooming season in my area. I see them everyday on the way to my son’s daycare, and am still captivated by their beauty everytime I look at them.

It’s been a real treat watching Ji Chang Wook and Wi Ha Joon. Their characters had depth and nuances.
Wookie has matured as an actor, I think.

And the next pairing to anticipate: Ji Chang Wook and Shin Hye Sun; Wi Ha Joon and Jung Ryeo Won. What more could I ask for!!

10
3

I am glad you enjoyed Ji Chang-wook THE WORST OF EVIL. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to watch because it aired on Disney+.
As a US viewer the good news (although not totally confirmed) is that JCW’s S/S drama from JTBC WELCOME TO SAMDAL-RI (16 eps) will be available on Netflix airing in December.

    2
    1

I finished The worst of evil feeling fulfilled, although I know it wasn’t a perfect show like Forest of secrets and the likes, it didn’t even come close to that. I guess it is partly because I had been longing for something like this from Ji Chang Wook, and I wouldn’t have appreciated it this much had it been by another actor.

Oh thanks for the info about his next show. I didn’t know it’d be airing this December, I thought next year. So that’s really good news.

It’s no secret that I love looking at people’s hands and am easily moved by hand expressions.
I made these GIFs after reading @sonai ’s description of Junho’s hands and his way of showing affection towards Young-woo in this week’s www thread.

Bonus: Junho’s expression. I love tiny details like this.

I pay particular attention to hands and forearms. If there is also a bracelet or a watch on the forearms, I’m done for. It’s a pity that wristwatches are becoming rarer and rarer.

    5
    2

In the age of smart phones, it’s true that wristwatches have become rarer. It’s different for celebs though. I think wristwatches for them are fashion accessories, and male characters in K-dramas have all types of beautiful wristwatches.

The pagination is back to normal with 50 root comments per page. Thank you @db-staff ☺️

11
0

Trivial: Regarding the current pagination issue

Each page now has 10 original comments (sub-comments don’t count). So I thought, if the first person to comment just go ahead and comment as usual, and we keep replying to that first comment, then at least 1 original comment and 99 sub-comments will be on page 1, and most notifications will take us to the right (sub)comment, am I correct?
(I assumed originally a page was set up to show 100 original comments)

I’m imagining if DB staff don’t fix that pagination issue (soon), on each post, the first person (from Beanies Union) will say something like “Please reply to this comment instead of posting a new original comment” and we’ll follow 😄

4
10

But the notifications for the person with the OG comment would be crazy. CRAZY.

And if someone is actually trying to reply to their comment (from another post), the probably wouldn’t know unless they read all the emails.
I would feel kinda bad. 🙁

    6
    1

      You’re right, I didn’t think of that.
It seems not feasible, unless… unless there’s an account devoted to posting that original comment only.
But honestly, as users, we shouldn’t be discussing this in the first place, should we? I know the site owners are working on it but recently there’s been no long period we go without any problem. There’s always something to worry about.

      3
      1

Yeah, it would be like someone creating an account only to make the OG comments. Or maybe more people because of the different time zones and stuff.

I support your idea. It doesn’t have to be in every post tho. I think the post with the ratings, Beanie reviews, etc, probably don’t need it.
But drama chats, OT, WWW, and recaps definitely need it.

I’m a really impatient person so changing pages and scrolling like crazy to find my comment is giving me major anger issues. 😂😂😂 So if the majority of beanies want it, I could help.

I think this year has been difficult for DB. This is the first time I see the site having so many problems… I’ve only been here two or three years, tho.

        4
        0

It matters NOT AT ALL, but the original setup had only 25 “root” comments, not 100.

    2
    1

You’re right. I think I also got it wrong about the total number of comments (root and sub-) per page. Now I understand that as long as there are 10 (or were originally 25) root comments, how many sub-comments there are doesn’t really matter, right? The page only turns because of the set number of root comments, doesn’t it?

      1
      1

That’s correct. Page 2 is triggered by the 11th “root” comment, as it used to be triggered by the 26th. Each root comment can have four sub-comments, and I gather each of those four sub-comments can each have four…all the way down. There’s factorial math that can be done, but I’m tired. **hand wave** It’s actually quite a few comments that could exist on each page, but there are two things about this fact that I’m going to type now (gosh, I feel I should stop talking):

        1. It’s super-hard to read all those nested comments because of the way you have to display the comments all the way down to the bottom of the first-most-nested sub-thread before you pop back out to the next sub-comment higher up in the nest’s hierarchy. You know this from experience, even when folks aren’t trying to cram things onto page 1.

        2. What’s making the site slow down, I feel (no insider knowledge), is the way that the like and reply functionality is loading in memory. It’s probably very sloppy code from a plug-in that’s no longer supported, is my guess…but hey I’m just making shit up because it makes me anxious to not know the cause. ANYWAY, if I’m right (and I give myself an 85% chance of pinpointing the direct cause there), if we bloat the first page with hundreds of comments even as replies to the root comment, we’ll just slow it back down to the way it was before this eme*rgency fix.

This whole thing sucks, the communication sucks (Sorry, Guys, I know you can read this!!!), but the fact of the matter is that the site owners really don’t owe us anything. We contribute our labor to the site, and I know they appreciate it, but we’re not in a contractual relationship or anything–even those of us who give money.

I’m sure we are welcome to set something up on our own, but the fact of the matter is there is literally no way you can buy a six-year-strong internet community with consistent, intelligent contributers holding a fierce and tangible loyalty to the main posters and one another. I would even venture a guess that in the world of Reddit and Discord, communities like this one are actually IMPOSSIBLE to create anymore.

Problem is, we don’t mint money, now do we? I mean I give them my money, but hey, I’m sure it’s not enough.

The world has changed. I feel it in the water the pants the My Dearest 11-12 recap. The comment thread now features more than 10 root comments! All on one page!

Thank you Elinor, yes it is now back to 50 root comments per page. I’ve checked with Confession recap.

            0

It is becoming harder to reply these day that I was tempted to post the same thing on my wall. Assuming with more beanies talking about this problem, maybe it will be fixed sooner. But while waiting, I just think that by memorizing the number of our comment (s) will be helpful.

My heart ached for them at this scene, but since the show ended on a positive note, and season 2 is confirmed, I allowed myself to play around a little bit :”>

CLAIRE. If I were to have written a “reason why you should watch” post, it would have been on Run On. If you don’t mind spoilers, there’s a post a while back on my Fan Wall that has Kang Tae-oh as the header image in which a BUNCH of us discuss the pros and cons of the show (it’s not perfect by any means). It was one of the most interesting conversations I’ve ever had on this site.

            2
            0

@attiton I’ve nearly finished episode 1 just now, it is quite fun so far, except for Shin Se-kyung’s scenes. It’s hard watching her because although I want to give her the benefit of the doubt, I think she can’t emote. Her facial expression, if any, is usually not on point. I’ll keep watching and will check out the discussion on your fanwall too, thanks.

@claire2009 She’s not the strongest link here. In fact, you may end up thinking that the other characters deserve better than her.

HOWEVER (하지만), I would argue that this is an actual strength of the show. Don’t think you’re going to like everyone, and don’t think that everyone will make the right decisions. It ends fine, I’m going to go ahead and tell you…so don’t think I’m sending you to your doom. But, I think it matters that you end up being sort of annoyed at her.

            1
            0

Run On is great because the romances are not the typical K romances but odd pairings falling in love. It’s like indie romances filled with fluidity and delights.

It’s also the first drama that I like Shin Se-kyung.

            2
            0

The production team announced a second season before talking to the actors according to PEB. They need her, so I wonder how they convinced her.

        1
        1

I hope by at LEAST making her the best paid actor of all in the ENTIRE industry.

          1
          2

They put her in a difficult situation.

If she didn’t want play this role in a second season, they put on her the disapointment of the public…

            3
            0

            I agree with @Kurama
In all of the succeeding interviews the cast and crew did for the drama— be it for promos or because of awards season— never has PEB promised that she would return for a Season 2 nor did she ever deny that she wouldn’t. The vibe I get from her for being so vague about giving a concrete answer is because she felt pressured and as a result of that pressure, she wasn’t sure about continuing on with a Season 2. It definitely feels more like the production is trying to pressure her into a Season 2 without explicitly pressuring her into a Season 2. And I totally get it, because not only is it about a Season 2 of a highly successful drama, but it’s also a drama wherein a lot of care, thought, and sensitivity needs to be placed into it because of the nature of the main topic— the story of a person who is differently abled

Scattered notes about posting on your fanwall
The majority of beanies have already mastered the art of fanwall posting for long now, so the following random notes I took here and there are a summary of what I have learned from my fellow beanies and may be useful to new beanies (by “new”, I didn’t necessarily mean the newly joined beanies but those beanies who are new to posting on a forum).

****

This is a simple guide to posting on your fanwall
https://www.dramabeans.com/members/claire2009/activity/1455308/

There are additional points to keep in mind:

1 The principle for embedding pics in your post remains the same regardless of the source of the pics.
What you need is an image address, which starts with https:// and ends with .gif, .jpg, .png…, like the one below

https://0.soompi.io/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/22210639/Do-Hwan-mad-dog-gif-1.gif

Note: Just remember, the double quotation marks used in the command line must be straight-down like below

There are plenty of Kdrama related pics and GIFs on the internet, you can source them from any site that host them.

****

2 But what if you can’t find the screenshot/GIF you want on the internet? Then you should create them.

Recently, I have learned how to do screenshots and screen records for streaming platforms like Netflix, Viki,… in a proper way (thanks to Seon-ha, Elinor, and Sicarius).

This applies to laptops/desktops: First, you need to turn off Web acceleration feature on your web-browser. Once it is turned off, you can do screenshots and screen records with whichever tool you have on your device. This is possible with Chrome, Opera, Firefox. It is not possible with Safari, because Web acceleration is always on on Safari, you cannot turn it off.

For phones and tablets: I don’t know any way to do screenshots and screen records with those streaming platforms.

****

3 Why do you need screen records? — They are what you make GIFs from.

GIFs can be made from short clips. There are tools to do that, for example Tumblr or Giphy, both are easy to use. I started with Tumblr but now I use Giphy more often.

You go to giphy dot com, create an account and upload your videos to create GIFs. GIFs created will be stored under your account there.

****

4. Never edit your fanwall posts. If you are not happy with your post, delete it and post the edited version. Just like Mr. Darcy said “My good opinion, once lost, is lost forever”, your post once deleted, is lost forever, without a trace 🙂

If fellow beanies already liked and commented on your post and you don’t want to delete it, try to come to terms with it 🙂 We all make typos all the time 🙂 I also make grammatical errors :”>

The reason you should never edit your posts is that the original posting function allows you to create a post having both text and pics, with pics either by Dramabeans uploading function or by embedded html codes; while the edit function, as tempting as it may look, only works like the commenting function on the main page (open threads, recaps,…), which means it does not allow you to embed pics. So when you edit your post, all the pics will be removed and there’s no way to get them back.

****

5. You can post more than 200 characters if you post from a phone or tablet. Compose your whole post on a text editor, then copy and paste the whole thing onto the composing window (don’t touch it, i.e. no editing, after pasting, or it’ll be truncated to 200 characters), then hit POST.

****

6. If you want to tag someone in your long (more than 200 characters) post, type @their-user-name in your post draft. To find one’s username, go to their fanwall and look at the URL to their fanwall.

I have finished Business proposal. It was a pleasant surprise, a romcom I needed. The reason I was ignoring it during the time it was airing is that for some reason, the thumbnail on Netflix always showed Seol In Ah and Kim Min Kyu, and although I had absolutely no prejudice against them, they, which I thought were the leads at the time, did not draw me in. And for a long time after that, whenever people talked about Kim Seo Jeong, I thought people were referring to Seol In Ah, my bad.

The fact that it was 12 episode long was just perfect, and I think more shows should be that long only. When I reached episode 10 mark, thinking there were another 6 episodes to go, I was wondering what conflicts the writer could have to drag it another 6 hrs.

So apart from its endearing characters that I found easy to root for, their maturity and earnestness in solving conflicts, their sincerity in putting themselves in others’ shoes so that they could understand their loved ones, the 12 episode length really added to my satisfaction after finishing the show. Now I understood the hype :”>

Then I decided to start Heartbeat, thinking I needed another romcom before embarking on Gone with the wind of Korea, i.e. My dearest, only to find out that Heartbeat is not available on all streaming platforms I am subscribing to (Netflix, Viki and Disney+) in my region 😑.

So I started Extraordinary Attorney Woo instead and got to see one of the most solid first episodes in Kdrama.

Tell me you didn’t swoon at this!!

Also tell me you didn’t notice he has smiling eyes 😉

And his name is no other than Lee Junho, ha 😄

    Yep, I swooned~

So glad you enjoyed Business Proposal.
Netflix is weird that way even the thumbnail for Because This Is My First Life shows Kim Min Kyu.

    4
    1

It was a delightful easy watch, which we surely need from time to time.
Maybe Netflix has a campaign to push Kim Min Kyu forwards 😅 (just kidding). But it is true that after Junho’s military discharge, many 2PM videos on youtube had Junho for the thumbnails.

      2
      1

Just so long as Netflix doesn’t promote Heavenly Idol. 🤣

Although to be honest I was amongst the faithful who stuck around.

We will have to wait for his next project – unless he filmed something else before enlistment.

        4
        0

I think Business Proposal was nice and very funny. Kim Se Jeong did a great job there, she was awesome.
My only issue is about the final episode, which I think was extremely rushed.

    5
    2

I did think the finale was rushed. But I think because the characters were set up as quite mature and deeply in love with the other one (both couples), and there was no real evil antagonist, the PD wanted us viewers to image things that happened behind the scenes to reach that ending. I guess the show was really popular back then, and it’d have been nice had they decided to add another episode like some other popular shows.

      5
      2

It was quite a surprise seeing her look in BP after Uncanny Counter!

Business Proposal really is a sweet rom-com – I’m glad you enjoyed it!!! 😊

    3

You might have just convinced me to watch Business Proposal I think the timing, when it came out and the Netflix sempiternally doomed-by-brainless-editors teasers did initially discouraged me from watching it.

Heartbeat may be available on free streaming platforms, which I can never name uncensored here but, with a little formatting magic, I’m sure you’ll get what I mean: kis s as i an & drama c oo l. However, if you are after a light romcom, you may want to stop Heartbeat before the last episode.

Ah, Attorney Woo! Isn’t Park Eun-bin just fantastic in here (as she is pretty much anywhere else)? I appreciated the many (MANY) green relationship flags in the drama. Not just romantic relationships, but friendship, workplace, and somehow even family.

Admittedly, I get always a little annoyed by the representation of autism on screen. This is script related, and has not nothing to do with PEB. It always seems to be on the Rain Man scale (with less or more cognitive capabilities – here, Woo Young-woo’s intelligence matches her neurotypical peers) with people having immensely visible difficulties to navigate through the world… What about the rest of the vast AU spectrum, writer-nim?

I (in whisper voice) go to the darkside all the time too for shows I really want to watch, I even downloaded all episodes to my computer so that I didn’t have to deal with the pop-up ads while watching. My plan was to watch Heartbeat excluding the last 2 episodes, but now it has to wait until I have nothing else on my plate.

Park Eun Bin is amazing. I am at episode 4 but right when I finished episode 2, I thought she must deserve some big award with such performance, so I went to check, and true enough, she won Grand Prize at Baeksang. Well deserved.

The background music in Attorney Woo is novel. It doesn’t feel like Korean music but quite exotic. It gives me the same feel as the bgm in Pride and prejudice 2005 movie version.

Not only ADS, many other innate neurodevelopmental disorders have a broad spectrum, but I guess dealing with those disorders in an accurate way was never the writers’ strength.
