Love in Contract episodes 1-2:

Who on earth looked at Woori the Virgin‘s narrative trajectory and ratings and said “yes, give me more of that, please”?

5
3

🤣 I only watched the first and last episodes but this comment made me laugh.
Did you watch it all? Will you be watching this or running for the hills?

I’ll probably watch the next episode of LiC, mostly out of morbid curiosity. I feel challenged to stick it out until Go Kyung-pyo has a facial expression other than ‘shocked frog.’ I quit Woori after ep. 6 but continued to read the recaps and I have never been gladder I dropped something.

I am interested in finding out what his job is I think he works in a mortuary or is a prosecutor. I am assuming something with regular hours but connected with working out cause of death and injuries. I also want to know how they moved from her retiring to ending up with two husbands.

Oh my gosh! I’m a Chaebol’s Poor Doppelgänger! That must have happened in like the past 20 minutes. I hadn’t even gotten to wear all of my eunuch drag outfits yet. Luckily, where I live dressing like a eunuch and/or in drag is considered completely normal streetwear so I’ll still get some use out of them. Gotta be thrifty since I’m never going to be a chaebol’s rich doppelgänger. 😒

Maybe this is a sign that I should watch Golden Spoon after all.

Congratulations! I hope you have fun getting up to hijinks with your rich twin. Maybe they’ll even share some of that elusive wealth to one day make you a rich doppelgänger? Only time will tell.

Congratulations! I love how it creeps in with no indication that its coming. Enjoy it while you are free to roam as it won’t be long before you are trapped in the panty drawer!

You definitely need to watch Golden spoon to see the options available to you😊

Huh. I just went back to Alchemy episodes 1 and 2 to revisit Wook’s and Mu-deok’s first few encounters, and the Netflix subtitles have changed. A lot. I’m sure of it because there are several lines I and others quoted in the comments and those are translated differently now. Example: “May you greet your deaths as beautifully as your names” is now “Wherever Naksu may go, you will all be defeated … beautifully, just like your name.”

They also added parenthetical subs to indicate non-verbal sounds like sighing or doors closing (which I find distracting and unnecessary). I’ve noticed Netflix making tweaks to subs in the past, but this seems more extensive. I didn’t check whether they’ve done this for subsequent episodes – I’m obsessive, but not that obsessive – but it might make eventual pre-Season-2 rewatching more interesting.

5
5

Is it the closed caption version you are reading now where they add the non verbals for the deaf watchers?

    2
    1

Aha! That’s correct. Switching back to non-CC English gets rid of the non-verbals and seems to be the translation I first saw. I’m totally baffled why there would be completely distinct translations of the dialogue, though.

It looks like English+CC is only available through ep. 4. I’m not sure it’s worth watching the CC version to get an alternate take on the often-crappy subtitles but having to put up with the distracting parentheticals. In the bits I’ve watched, the CC translations seem more complete.

      3
      1

CC are for dubs. Dubs have different wording in order to match up better with mouths. English CC for non-English shows are inherently less accurate because of this.

        2
        2

Thank you that makes sense in this context usually cc are part of the accessibility suite for disability purposes.

          1
          0

Thanks, that makes sense generally – but there is no English dub for Alchemy, at least not yet or not in my region (US). I did a quick flip though a random dozen Korean shows on Netflix; only one of them (Business Proposal) has English dubbing. It also has English CC. A couple of others have English CC but most have neither. I mean, I don’t expect consistency from Netflix and it was definitely not a large enough sample to draw conclusions – so I’m still puzzled!

Alchemy of Souls finale:

2
6

    … has given me:
🗡 18 hours of tremendous fun
    🗡 1 hour of annoyance
🗡 1 hour of irritation that didn’t quite reach 🍿-throwing levels
🗡 1/2 hour of gleefully screaming “I told you so!” at the screen as the Red Wedding, return of Naksu, running wild, and apotheosis of Wook unfolded

I wish those hours had not come in that exact order, but I am 100% fine with where the story left us. I’ll almost certainly forget the aggravation by December unless I make the mistake of rewatching ep. 19 and the first part of 20. All in all, I’m glad I watched and looking forward to Season 2 (although not the absence of Jung So-min, who was fantastic to the end).

    10
    2

Right? The good thing about having low expectations for a Hong Sisters’ finalé is it doesn’t really take much to make you feel content with the ending – despite all the flaws. This ending still was nowhere near the rage I felt for Jae Wook’s last drama. 😆

The Drama That Shall Not Be Named is such a legend for how bad the ending was that I’m not remotely tempted to watch and my blood pressure is the better for it. I do hope that Alchemy has established LJW as a major star and washed away any guilt-by-association left from his first turn as ML.

but hasn’t everyone in the water come back? i will wait for december… regardless if MSJ is in the second part or not – tho i hope she will return as Mu Deok….

This show is going to kill me.

I just watched Twenty, the 2015 movie with Kim Woo-bin, Kang Ha-neul, and Junho as (improbably manly-looking) 20-year-olds trying to figure out what to do with their lives and how to get laid, not necessarily in that order. It’s also got Jung So-min and several other familiar faces. A lot of it is hysterically funny, although it doesn’t exactly break new ground and there’s a touch too much “ain’t life grand” sunny optimism for my cynical old self. Woob’s character is annoying as hell in a way that makes it particularly satisfying whenever someone smacks him upside the head. There’s plenty of crude/sexual humor but it’s pretty mild (at least for me as a survivor of three younger brothers and a teenage son). But oh my god THE FIGHT SCENE IS F*CKING GLORIOUS. I laughed so hard I thought I was going to throw up. Worth watching just for that.

It is a funny movie to watch, and it’s worth it just to laugh yourself out in the restaurant fighting scene.

There are rumours about a “Thirty” movie. PD and main cast said they would be in if the rest are in. Those rumours started during Baeksang awards ceremony and all WooBin, Junho and Haneul said they would love to be in a project like that.

And what can I say? I’m all in too.

Alchemy of Souls
TVN released a slightly extended preview for episode 17 (although who knows which episode, if any, will actually have these scenes). Netflix US hasn’t updated the one at the end of ep. 16 yet – and still doesn’t have air dates for any future episodes. 🤔

There’s a version with English subs here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtqHWsHuGes

DB won’t let me embed that video; maybe it thinks there’s an Inappropriate Word in the URL. 🙄🤷🏼‍♀️

Im kinda pissed that i clicked play on this on YT yesterday..like why the heck did i spoil myself??

    1
    1

I feel that. There’s only been one episode where I managed to restrain myself from watching the preview and then a million comments here spoiled me anyway. 😂 I keep telling myself that the probability that anything in a preview is deceptively edited, a dream sequence, or a deleted scene grows exponentially as the end of the series approaches, and the production team has had an extra week to mess with our heads as well.

      1
      1

Of course it’s deceptive and meant to lure you in, but i also feel like they ruin it by showing seemingly important parts. It’s worse if it ends up not being shown in the drama later. I guess we just can’t win 😏

@miky88
Love all the new Alchemy pix but this one was my favorite. I wonder what they dropped? Does Lee Jae-wook just casually carry his sword around on the set all the time?

15
5

    The ice stone?

    5
    1

Honestly, if I had a sword, I too would carry it around with me all the time.

    2
    1

I do have a sword, and that thing is HEAVY. I can barely draw it. No way I’m lugging it around.

I also just realized that LJW is gripping the sword by the blade. And what’s up with everyone just carrying them around in their hands, instead of having the scabbard attached to a sword belt? That seems cumbersome – wouldn’t you want to have both hands free?

I have no idea why I’m trying to apply logic to this situation. It’s not like I’ve ever seen a sword fight break out in real life.

      2
      1

Those are most likely prop swords so it will not be as heavy as real swords. The blade would not hurt LJW.

I’m watching Alchemy of Souls and Chief Kim at the same time 😵‍💫. Both have characters named Seo Yul – Junho’s rude, aggressive, conflicted antagonist and Minhyun’s sensitive, reserved, conflicted mage. The contrast between the two could not be sharper, so of course I want a time-travel/alternate-universe crossover drama where they meet.

15
10

    I see Seo Yul, I like 👍

    3
    1

I guess I should have specified Lee Junho’s Seo Yul! 😂😂

    I like both Yuls!

    1

I would totally watch that drama!

    3
    1

And when they meet they will fight amongst themselves who is the better Seo Yul. AoS Yul may not be able to use his mage power in the alt universe so the Gluttonous Psychopath have a big chance to win.

      4
      2

Oh I love this! Then they would argue over who looks better in their respective outfits …. Office Seo Yul in his tailored, colorful suits or Mage Seo Yul in his tailored, serene green robes.

        I better stop. 🙂

I admit, I’m Team Gluttonous Psychopath.

        3
        1

I like him better too due to his character arc. But AoS is not yet over so that may change if Yul ends up getting a better storyline.

          2
          1

But GP being played by Junho has a definite advantage though

Off to get my drag outfits together. I’ll always be an idiot at heart, though.

Congrats that’s fab news. Sometimes it’s a couple of likes that brings you into the next level. I take note of the numbers and literally its been a couple likes and a comment difference between the levels and as you have no control over when the likes come in as we are all in different time zones it can easily happen overnight. Will be interesting to see what happens when you gain a twin look alike in a few weeks time.

Drama math: if we almost always see a kiss in ep. 12 of 16, then we should get one in ep. 14 of 20, right? I\’m not sure I actually want that to happen, just checking my answers before submitting my test paper.

Alchemy of Souls:
Does Netflix change or update previews after an episode is first streamed? I could swear there’s more and different content in the ep. 13 preview now than there was when I watched it on Sunday. Am I hallucinating?

1
1

omg I just went and watched it and I think there’s a little bit more too?? It’s still got the stuff from when it first streamed but it feels like there’s extra scenes in there? I’m bamboozled as though, I can’t tell if this is some kind of mandela effect or if there really is more stuff added 🤯

Rant: On Kissing.
I’m watching She Would Never Know and I’ve concluded that Won Jin-ah is the worst kisser I’ve seen in dramas. It’s not just the motionless lips – she stiffens her neck and pulls her chin back as far as she can and looks absolutely miserable throughout. Her body language is more like someone who’s desperately hoping it will be over quickly than a willing participant, and it pulls me right out of the moment. I noticed it in Just Between Lovers, but thought that was because she was relatively new and it was her first romantic lead role. Sadly, no. She still looks so uncomfortable it makes me uncomfortable, like I’m witnessing workplace harassment.

She’s not the only actor I’ve seen who does this, just the most extreme. It’s making me think about kissing in dramas generally. I don’t think kisses are the be-all and end-all for an actor, and certainly no one should be required to do something at their workplace that they makes them feel threatened, so I’m not going to say “it’s just part of her job.” But a dull or unconvincing kiss (like so many in dramaland) lands really differently from one that sours a romantic moment because it looks like an ordeal for the actor. There are other ways of expressing affection and even desire. When an actor is clearly this uneasy with that aspect of her work, the writer and PD should find an alternative. That, or she should not take on roles that require kissing.

6
5

I think she should choose a different genre without this element being part of the role. It’s so intimate for many and it’s not something they take lightly in real life. In the K drama world a kiss is emphasised so much so having to do it 50 times for multi camera angle shot would make it horrendous if it’s the part of the job you hate.

    3
    0

I liked the kiss scenes in She Would Never Know and she didn’t fish kissing.

The first one was a simple one because of the situation. But the others were great.

    1
    0

This maybe one of the reasons why married female actors have strict “no-kiss” clause in their contracts so as to not ruin the whole viewing experience for the audience. However, I do not understand how their male counterparts agree to such scenes and makes me question if the said activity differentiates between genders based on societal norms, personal beliefs and culture.

    3
    1

I wonder if they are just being given the message that this is what the audience wants to see, along with the half-naked men in the shower, women in mini skirts, etc. and the fan’s feeling that idols should not be in a relationship. It’s a tricky balance between realistic portrayals of relationships and actors’ rights to keep parts of themselves for real life only.

      2
      0

This was my main frustration with Just Between Lovers. It was a massive disappointment. Especially as her ML was Junho… This doesn’t make her a bad actress, but don’t cast her in a romance!
