Questions for Beanies watching Angel’s Last Mission Love with Kocowa’s subs! Do you understand why Dan calls Yeon Seo a “noisy gong”? If I said it was a reference to the Corinthian’s quote “You may speak the tongues of man or angels, but, without love, you are but a sounding brass or clanging symbol,” does it make any more sense or is it still unclear?
Secondly, would you rather the translation stick with the biblical reference as a noisy gong or be changed to a more nickname-like translation, even if the meaning isn’t the same?

    Are you a translator?
    That is so cool.
    I’m not watching the show so doesn’t mean much, but I’d stick with noisy gong instead of changing the meaning.
    I’m so curious as to what others think.

      I’m one of the often grumbled about translators that takes forever and a day to sub things, but, yes, I’m one of the people working on this show lol I figured if I’m working on a platform that allows me to get viewers’ direct opinions then I should go ahead and utilize that.     I don’t use Kocowa, but I’m OK with the Noisy Gong translation. I’ve pretty much gotten used to it. Although it might be because I’m familiar with the Bible verse so it made perfect sense to me when he used it the first time.

      Do you mind telling me what about it made perfect sense to you when you heard it? My impression of that passage was that it was describing someone that claims to be/do something but it is in fact not because they don’t actually have the heart/love necessary behind it. A couple editors and I thought it wasn’t a good fit for Yeon Seo since she doesn’t claim or try to be nice/loving, she’s just always been mean.

        Oh, I see. My understanding of the verse was that you can have all the desirable things in the world (in Yeon-seo’s case, status and money) but if you don’t have love, they don’t mean anything. Also, if your words don’t come from a place of love, then you’re just making noise with your mouth. That’s just my two cents though.

          Thank you for that explanation! I think I’m going to note noisy gong as being unpleasant and meaningless then and work with it from there.

    I was wondering what that was in reference to. I prefer they do direct translations, but wish they could have footnotes explaining any meanings or references.

      It looks like that’s what we’ll be going with for the time being at least. I might try to modify noisy gong later to make it sound more cutesy since he’s turned it into an endearing nickname, but for now my struggle was figuring out an apt footnote that could clearly ties Yeon Seo’s personality to a noisy gong. My other problem is I keep missing all these Bible references. I evidently need to start attending church more often so that I can sub this show correct lol

    I assumed it was a reference to 1st Corinthians. I would stick with it.

    It is definitely the 1 Corinthians passage. In some English translations, “sounding brass” is written as “noisy gong”, for example in the English Standard Version.

      It went completely over my head too lol It doesn’t help that the name he’s using to call her is an instrument I used to play, so every time he said it I was super confused as to why he was randomly calling her a musical instrument. Fortunately, other people on the team are more Bible savvy than me 🙂
