Beanie level: Loan shark with a heart of gold

@mmmmm and @eazal, I couldn’t do it. I gave it five episodes. I can get over the terrible dubbing and bad cgi, but the utter infantilization of the FL was too much.

She wavered between a toddler and 15 year old. He distracted me from everything else. I am sorry I didn’t like your drama. I look forward to anything else you recommend though😊

You lasted much, much longer than I did – 30 seconds of her voice and I was done.

      5
      1

LOL. Yes, it was quite annoying but her voice changed to become more woman-like with her character development. I’m glad you tried, though!

Oh it’s fine 🙂 I actually don’t think it’ll be everyone’s cup of tea since a lot of suspension of disbelief has to be adopted in order to enjoy this show. Yes, viewing it from mature viewing perspective (the way we do with most Kdramas) will put this one probably almost right at the bottom of the list. But I truly think it’s a wonderful epic love story which might be able to make young women’s knees weak. It’s not a super healthy relationship, at least not from the beginning, but the FL and ML Will develop on this front much later on in the show which is probably far too far away from ep5.

Yes, viewing it from mature viewing perspective (the way we do with most Kdramas) will put this one probably almost right at the bottom of the list.

I have a different view from this. This show supassed all the kdramas I’ve seen this year because it had a strong message at core that many dramas miss out on. A suspension of disbelief is important in any fantasy but it is even more difficult to convey a message as cohesively as here in a fantasy because that requires extensive world building. The writing here is pretty good and I think is kind of universal, it’s the genre I’m noticing that keeps many away from it.

        1

I can relate to their feelings because I also dropped it at ep 1 the first try. I think I was in a different head and mind space so being invested in the show was impossible for me.

What made me try this show again was because Beans continued to rave about it, and also because I was in the mood to try something different -something light and fluffy and required next to nothing of my brain power. That was the sort of thought I had before I began watching it again, and probably the thing which made me continue watching despite many things I found not to my liking in that show. However, when I finally bought its premise, I began to be invested and felt like I was seeing a lot of development on the part of many characters. CGI began to look much better after this, and nothing really annoyed me anymore. Instead, I found many messages that are modern and actually quite reflective in the latter part of the show. The way the show transformed itself from strange world building with an FL that sounded immature and infantilized and an ML that sounded arrogant and abusive into something a lot more than that was fascinating to see. The show also asked questions that I don’t really know how to answer myself.

I’m not sure if anyone feels the same way, but to me this show succeeds in showing some traditional way of thinking about the roles of men and women (at least in parts of Asia) into modern way of thinking regarding the same thing.

As I mentioned to Kurama, I love fantasy, it is my reading genre of choice. So suspension of belief isn’t an issue, so long as you follow the rules you create. So on that front, I was fine with it. I even overlooked the dubbing(my least favorite part of Cdramas, I just don’t understand why they do it). I just didn’t like how the FL was so childlike, it made me uncomfortable, especially because they already had her kissing him. It was creepy to me.

Ester’s voice is not easy getting used to. Somehow I have been very forgiving when it comes to her.
I think you dropped at the same point I initially dropped. But I did pick it up again later and dropped again 😅

It’s why I don’t even try anymore… I know that the fantastic/historic ones are not for me.

My favorite genre is fantasy, it is the book genre I read the most, and I love a good fantasy, but this one just wasn’t it for me. lol

      1
      1

If you’ve never watched a Chinese fantasy show before then just for context, many FLs in that genre start out naive and cute. But they don’t remain like that and there is a strong character development in store for them. The same is the case here. Both the FL and ML start from a stereotypical drama characterization and their development is one of the most tangible I’ve seen in a few years. That said, the FL’s is much slower than the ML’s. And Esther Yu dubs her own voice so if that bothers you, her voice improves later on in the show. I can understand, many people can’t get over that, I eventually do. But if it’s just the infantalization that bothers you then well that will be gone in a few episodes. I don’t think episode 5 is the decider point for this show but if you’re totally disliking it by this point you may as well not continue.
On other points, I’m actually pretty used to dubbing but this show has really good one though. The MLs original voice is just not up for the character but his dubber did a great job, and it really seems like every word is coming from his own mouth. The cgi in this show is much bettrr than many cdramas. At the place they are currently it is more hazy and pinkish but that improves later on and becomes more subdued.

I just wanted to comment on these few points because I feel many peoppe have issues with it and while Esther’s voice can be a no go for some, these are overall things that improve in the show.

Thanks for the feedback. It isn’t even her voice, you can’t help your voice. It is her entire characterization for me. When they switched bodies the first time, the maturity was entirely there. I think it is a really hard line to find the right way to portray naive without going into stupid and I think they crossed that line. That is my issue. I might come back to it later, but her infantilization is too much for me. 😊

I am enjoying the hell out of The Red Cuff sleeve. I’m not sure why either, it is a mostly run by the numbers saeguk. But something about our OTP is perfection and the court politics don’t bother me.

I am going to be very candid. the last two episodes of Hometown Cha Cha just kind of annoyed me. Episode 14 was especially egregious. Ep. 15 was just longgggg. Sigh.

So I definitely thought DP would be a comedy, I was very very wrong. Good drama though.

Too all the beanies who speak Korean that follow my wall and watch You ate my Spring. What precisely does churum mean? Yeong Do says it all the time and Netflix translates it as oh dear.

1

Sorry I can’t help but laugh at “You ATE my spring”. Somehow it conjures up images of Seo Hyun-jin getting scolded by Kim Dong-wook for eating his last spring roll…

I don’t speak Korean but I am learning it (slowly!).

The word they use is 저런 or jeoreon. The Netflix translation seems to be accurate. It’s basically an exclamation like “oh my” or “oh no”.

    7
    1

Okay, thank you. This is the first time I have heard it in a drama.

      1
      1

Me too! I had looked it up when I first heard it on the show.

The Netflix Korean closed captions are pretty helpful in that sense. If I hear a new word, I switch from English subs to Korean CC and then look up the word on mirinae or google translate.

        2
        0

    @miso
저런 as an interjection can vary depending on the intonation. I’ve heard it most as a PG version of “the f***?”.
But with a slight resignation in tone, like how LDW does it, “oh dear” is correct.
You also probably heard it in sageuks before, by old noble men with beards and hands folded behind their backs, in an elevated pitch of indignation, usually directed at a woman who is doing something “scandalous”. This is more of an exclamation of speechlessness, and the word literally means “that kind of..”

Just imagine the situation. I arrive home from my dad’s. I park my car at my -3 park slot and then I realised I received the Twitter notification of the teaser… but no 4G available!! Omg!! The elevator had never been that slow!! I almost died when I arrived home and I could watch it! I was so nervous my cellphone fell twice from my hands 🤪

He’s so cute when he talks about his acting… as he could even act…
I mean, I love him to bits, but he should not try complicated things, and just stick to being charming. Although I guess he’s improved (or something).
But the fact is that he truly loves acting, probably more than the stage, which is normal because he also can’t sing! 🤦🏼‍♀️
Reading this comment who would say I love him 🤣🤣🤣
My heart is a little broken though because 2PM comeback will be more complicated than I expected, but even so… patiently waiting got them ❤️

    6
    4

His acting is pretty terrible but he’s just so fine to look at 😂 I totally get your love for him, he’s super charming and earnest in his efforts, and not being perfect just makes him more endearing. About 2PM, Eazal, you may enjoy listening to Eric Nam interviewing Nichkhun for his podcast (it’s from some months ago, I just remembered that I heard this without knowing a thing about 2PM, and it was fun): https://open.spotify.com/episode/2IMvzoOwkU0m6BKHV0u0Sn?si=LAPMkffzQimpmcpeJoB0Mw&utm_source=copy-link

I’ve already listened to it. I loved NichKhun speaking English for so long. I loved the podcast, they were really nice and seemed so comfortable talking together (and how competitive they went in the quiz 😂).

        0

🤣🤣🤣, no no, your love is real because you have zero illusions about his talent or lack thereof. He is doing well in Vincenzo because the character is very similar to him. He is at least charming and pretty to look at. At least we are just a little shallow🤣🤣, but A for effort Taec.

Yes! Let’s give him a triple A for trying 😂❤️☺️

Wow! I mean, it’s clear as day that you love him and all, but you admitting that he can’t act or sing is just so wholesome. Nowadays fangirls like you are so rare to find and I’m so happy that people like you even exist in this toxic world. Hats off to you, Eazal ❤️

      3
      1

Well, I’m a fan and not a fanatic and that helps.
And it also help that I’m an ahjuma in terms of fangirling, haha.

On twitter yesterday i saw a comment said Taec is so great at acting 😂😂 I miss Taec in variety really, can someone just cast him in 2d1n or stg. At least then i can watch him n SH at once. Also sad that he hasn’t been on Wild Six with the rest while waiting for Jun Ho to come out.

      2
      2

Junho is out,, I read casting news about him on soompi a week or so ago.. I remember because I was really really excited I just adore him.

        2
        1

Junho is discharged today. I hope we’ll have a Wild Six video soon, with the six of them together for the first time in such a long time. I will die, probably, specially considering Taec keeps saying there will be a comeback but they are taking it easy (translation: it may not be this year 😭).

As for Junho, if I’m intense about Taec, I can’t imagine how mad I’ll be when I can see Junho on my Tv every week. I may loose my mind 🤣🤣🤣

          2
          1

I wish he just stick to adorable roles, like rom coms or him just being cute. I think he’s doing a decent job in Vincenzo, he nails being adorable (because he is just adorable) but when trying to me bad and intimidating is just… well… sweetie… can you stick to adorable?
But I love he tries different things and tries to improve, because he can do it through hard working, but he’s not gifted in acting, not as Junho (to name another member).

I really wanted to like Start Up, but my God how stupid. Who divorces and never sees their child again. I was so distracted by that part of the story I could focus on literally nothing else. Dumb.🤔

1
9

Like for why did neither child see the other parent. When her father died, did her mother not come get her. Was her sister not sad her father died. WTF. I’ve seen this so many times in kdramas where after a divorce the parent completely disavows the child. What even is that? Also why not tell her the letter was a lie after 15 years? Why? Why?

    0
    0

It’s actually less surprising than you might think. I know people who’ve done this, in the country I live in and in the country my parents came from.

    2
    3

Far less surprising and far less common***

      1
      0

That is insane, in United States there custody for children is literally called custody battles. Parents just picking one child and never seeing the other is mind blowing to me, that is wild. I know of parents who simply abandon their children, but they do that regardless of divorce. The fact that everyone was so calm that one parent wouldn’t see their child and no follow up is baffling to me.

      1
      0

I’m from India and I can safely say that such a scenario is not very surprising really. I can imagine it playing out here

      2
      1

Yeah, my parents are from Pakistan. They know people who’ve done this.

        2

Many years ago, a close friend of ours got divorced and his ex-wife left their 5-year son with him and went abroad to marry another man and stayed in that country and never to contact her son ever again since she had her own family to care. So ya, that shit actually happened. Heartbreaking for the 5-year old boy.

    2
    1

It must have been, that is awful. I bet the little boy was sad. That is still mind-boggling to me. Unfortunately it will prevent from watching the show because that’ll be all I think about.

      2
      0

THANK YOU. I’m convinced their manager/agency got involved because the story loses the plot very quickly. Not just sad that JP didn’t get his happy ending, although I am bummed about how they handled it, but this doesn’t feel like it was written by the same writer all the way through.

JY needs to communicate to SA. However I don’t blame him for KY showing up all over the place, he has made himself very clear. KY was a petty petty Betty here, I was really disappointed in her.

IGFDSHAIEWFGAKWENGFKLSNEFKWJNFEGI, NOOOOOOO, I am so frustrated. While I am cheering for Song Ah to look after her mental health, I am also upset her insecurities are stopping this relationship.

6
3

There’s been so many incidents piling up though. I find it hard to just think of it as her being insecure. We have so much information that she doesn’t, so we can see more clearly. I don’t think their relationship is a good idea, even though they were such a sweet couple

I get that, our omniscience let’s us know a lot. However, her explanation when breaking up with him points mostly to her insecurities.

It was painful to watch. Hearing those statements from their bestfriends. 🙁

    1
    0

This is why I never let them aboard our cruise. Not real friends.

    2
    1

I hated them both, and I’m proud to say I’ve hated them both form the very beginning. First when they refused to accept that their relationships were over and that the other half was ready to let them go, acting almost violently, like if they had the right to have that person by their side. Second, when they accused both SA and JY of being bad friends for not telling them about their (secret) love.
These two are so selfish, just thinking about themselves. No wonder they’ve been dropped by their former couples, and I really hope they disappear and never find the way back to SA and JY. Our leads deserve better friends, specially when they’ve been so loyal to their friendship.

    1
    1

I don’t hate them, lol. They are just not being very good friends right now, they are hurting and lashing out at the wrong people. I do understand your sentiment though.
