VINCENZO eps 18. Genesis 11:1.

I’m reading the Book of Genesis thanks to all the Tower of Babel references. Such a good read for a Sunday morning.
Next week this show might make me attend church 😊.

True for me. I do a lot of reading and research when it comes to historical dramas (Korean and Chinese). I really enjoy it.

OSCAR 2021 (Variety Predictions): Sunday April 25th 8 pm on ABC.

I’m rooting for MINARI of course and Chloe Zhao’s NOMADLAND.
I couldn’t agree more with Variety on the best lead actress nomination.
Han Yeri should have been there.

Will win: Frances McDormand, “Nomadland”
Could win: Viola Davis, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”
Should win: Vanessa Kirby, “Pieces of a Woman”
Should have been here: Yeri Han, “Minari”

Pic: The whole swing scene was Yeri’s idea.

@kiara I’m also rooted for Nomadland and Frances McDormand (with Chloe Zhao and cinematographer Joshua James Richards) too. Another fellow Korean Youn Yuh-jung still rooted for me as supporting actress.

As for best actor and supporting actor, I knew that African-American actors (posthumous Chadwick Boseman and Daniel Kaluuya) will likely to win. So I rooted both.

I also rooted the categories for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom aside from best actor: best costume designer and best makeup and hairstyling.

As for best orginal song, I bet for rooting Italian famous female singer Laura Pusini for the win.

How good is your German @mmmmm? Schubert was a master of composing “Lieder”, songs with lyrics taken from poetry. There are dozens. For example:
      – For soprano: https://youtu.be/JygxOQK0rYg
      – For baritone: https://youtu.be/frHP6BM4Idg

Ohhhh thank you dear @wishfultoki 🥰. I used to be able to use German quite effectively, but that was years ago. I’ll come back to these pieces once I finish presenting this presentation! (Yes, I’m in the middle of a class 😳 oof)

“Du bist die Ruhe” (“You are repose”): https://youtu.be/mkvDiSnBxtg
This one is so beautiful, but I will stop because there are too many in each song cycle.

      Translation of lyrics:

      You are repose
      and gentle peace.
      You are longing
      and what stills it.

      Full of joy and grief
      I consecrate to you
      my eyes and my heart
      as a dwelling place.

      Come in to me
      and softly close
      the gate
      behind you.

      Drive all other grief
      from my breast.
      Let my heart
      be full of your joy.

      The temple of my eyes
      is lit
      by your radiance alone:
      O, fill it wholly!

      English Translation © Richard Wigmore

Schubert is one of my favorite composers. So delicate and poignant. I think it was Schumann who said Schubert’s music was like sunlight shining through the clouds.

Ooooh I loved this! I don’t like adultery stories so I have been hesitant to watch SLA… but the music angle is tempting.

    1

I felt the same way and that’s why it took me a long time to watch it even though I love PD Ahn and writer Jung. They are my all time favorite writer PD combo. I trust them the most with controversial topics because they handled them in genuine and sensitive manner. I always feel like I’m watching an authentic modern sageuk.
Having said that I was still hesitant but the raving reviews from Thundie’s blog which I frequently visited more than DB finally made me watch it and I’m glad I didn’t miss out on this masterpiece. I’d even say that it was the closest to perfection, from the writing, directing, storytelling, acting, music etc. I wasn’t even into classical music prior but this drama was my conversion.
I’d say try it even for the music alone.

Your favorite song was just perfect for the fight scenes between Han Yeri and Byun Yo-han ❤️❤️.
Six Flying Dragon: Bang Ji vs Sa Gwang.

This scene makes me cry every time. It’s so beautiful and painful, and the music adds to the intensity. Han Ye Ri’s dancing talent made her fighting style so graceful and powerful. Byun Yo-han poured his heart and soul into this drama. ❤

But OMG Moo-hyul with chipmunk voice made me burst out laughing 😂😂

    3
    1

I love this but there is one small part that is missing. I think it’s around 1.50 when she got the cut above her knee. He laughed at her (not shown) because she was not only undefeated but had a flawless track record. She had never been injured during a fight before.

I love every fight scene in this show because there is a story to every legendary fighter and warrior had their unique style and skills.

LOL Moo-hyul. Hilarious but he saved Bang Ji since he had seen her going for the kill before.

I hope you’ll watch TREE WITH DEEP ROOT. You’ll love the original Moo-hyul too. Yoon Kyun-sang did a good job channeling him in SFD.

THE LONG BALLAD: The cuju game episode 1. English subs @viki.
Tang Dynasty – Emperor Tai Zong.
The 3 kingdom era is much more interesting from Chinese historical drama’s perspective. The  extensive and meticulous research that went into recreating Chang An (Tang’s capital city) in “Longest Day in Chang ‘an” was mind blowing. It’s something to be proud of and it deserves all the love from the local viewers.
I’m officially a Chang’an fangirl thanks to the “Longest Day in Chang’an.”  It’s nice to be familiar with the city layout before this new drama, “THE LONG BALLAD” came out.

“LONGEST DAY in CHANG’AN” (2019)

Since I don’t have any sageuks to watch I’ll go back to the Tang Dynasty and maybe finish watching this amazing show.
The truth is, I don’t want to finish it because historical shows like this only come around every 10 years or so if we are lucky.
If you are a history nerd, sageuk geek, fan of the 3 kingdom era etc. This is your show.

“744 A.D., Chang’an, the cosmopolitan heart of the Tang Empire. The remnants of a vanquished Central Asian kingdom have infiltrated the world’s largest city for a planned attack during the Lantern Festival. Meanwhile, the court is fraught with infighting. The aging Emperor is expected to announce the regency of the Right Chancellor during the festival and retreat to the mountains with his young lover. If the Right Chancellor becomes the regent, the reformist Crown Prince risks being deposed—or worse. Intelligence chief Li Bi, a young Taoist priest, and ally of the Crown Prince has only 24 hours to prevent both the attack and the regency. After a botched attempt to capture the infiltrators, Li Bi and his team call in the services of death row prisoner Zhang Xiao Jing — a war veteran, beloved police chief, and murderer of his last direct superior.

    @kiara,
Wow! I have had LONGEST DAY IN CHANG’AN for the longest time on Viki (US) where all 48 episodes are available. I watched Avenue X on YouTube discuss this drama so I know that the drama takes place over the course of the one night of the year that the regular curfew is not in place. How far along are you?

Maybe this is the push I need to take the plunge and get going.
Jung Il-woo’s BOSSAM—STEALING FATE won’t premiere until May 1st and as of now I have no idea if that will be available on a legal streaming site in the US. I am currently live watching only two dramas and both are excellent: BEYOND EVIL and NAVILLERA. After the events around RIVER and JOSEON EXORCIST maybe this is the time to do it.

Halfway because I keep pausing to read up on some historical stuff :). This is a feast for the eyes and brain. It reminds me of “Conspiracy in the Court.”

I loved CONSPIRACY. The great Mr. X’s subtitles in archaic English were a challenge however.
One of my favorite examples and I paraphrase.
(The set up is a meeting of government officials/ministers. Head guy chairing the meeting shuts the meeting off and tells the others: “Return to your devoirs.”)
My response was, “say what?” Lol. Devoirs is from the French and means something a person is responsible for; duty. He told the others to go back to work!
I know my memory is shoddy but I have an idea all 8 episodes were subtitled like that.
I think it was @pakalanapikake that recommended CONSPIRACY to me maybe it was you @kiara.
I will let you know if I finally start LONGEST DAY.

JOSEON EXORCIST: GYEONGBOKGUNG PALACE (main poster).
Location: Seoul.
(330 buildings with with 5,792 rooms covering 4,414,000 ft²).

History/Timeline:
Oct 7 1395

Gyeongbokgung Palace was completed three years after the foundation
of Joseon, the last Korean kingdom founded in 1392. It was a
monumental feat of architecture announcing the birth of a new
dynasty. Most of all, this palace reflects the founding philosophy of
Joseon, which is Confucianism. The person who designed and
supervised the construction of the capital was a leading Confucian
scholar named Jeong Do-jeon.

The name of the palace ‘gyeongbok’ is a word borrowed from one of
the Confucian scriptures that means to ‘enjoy good fortune and
prosper’.
The name also shows good wishes for the new dynasty. It’s the same
with the names of other buildings in the palace grounds, as they’re all
named based on the philosophy of Confucianism.

This song actually evokes a physical reaction in me. I have had the soundtrack on non-stop repeat since I saw the film. The score is infused with such a quiet hope, with sunlight, and a sense of fragility – like a butterfly just out of a cocoon when its wings aren’t quite dry, but it’s ready to fly. Wind Song is also lovely, a bit more playful and wistful. I do hope they win!

    1

It’s a shame that neither song got nominated but I’m grateful they got the original score nod.

Thanks @kiara for the recommendation. I have had THE LONGEST DAY IN CHANG’AN queued up on Viki for I don’t how long.

    3
    1

Oh do watch THE LONGEST DAY IN CHANG’AN. I’m currently watching it also. (Zhou Yi Wei is in both dramas). I find the 3 kingdoms era interesting ( both China and Korea) so CHANG’AN is a real treat.

I miss the epic sageuks of old. I don’t see any in Dramaland’s future so I’m going catch up with mainland epics for now.

      2
      1

I’m still catching up with the epic sageuks of old! Just finished KIM SU RO and am thinking of watching GWANGGAETO THE GREAT or KING GEUNCHOGO. Which one would you recommend @kiara?

Feel free to recommend more mainland epics! I have yet to watch THE LONGEST DAY IN CHANG’AN and am intrigued because it’s set in the Tang Dynasty (?).

        2
        1

GWANGGAETO THE GREAT is very long (92 eps) but it ties in with SFD when it comes to the Liaodong Peninsula incident and why General Choi Young was so determined to reclaim it. That was their last shot at reclaiming part of Korea’s glory days.
Goguryeo has always been my favorite out of the 3 so I’ll recommend it first :).

While Gwanggaeto is a descendant of Jumong, KING GEUNCHOGO is a descendent of the remarkable nation builder queen Soseono.
Both kings expanded their nation’s territory so there is lots of war and political intrigues to keep you interested till the end.

Yes CHANG’AN is set during the Tang dynasty. The alliance between Tang and Silla was to destroy Goguryeo. That’s why Silla is known more as a traitor for allying with a foreign country. Silla’s history calls it the unification lol.
The main dream/goal of King Jinheung shown in the beginning of QSD was to unite the 3 kingdoms under Silla. I’m not sure if allying with a foreign nation was part of the plan but he’s known to play dirty politics. The first episode of QSD showed his betrayal of a treaty with Baekje.

Both dramas will expand your knowledge on other sageuks that you are familiar with like Jumong, QSD, SFD etc.

          2
          2

Thank you @kiara. After watching BALLAD OF SEODONG and KING’S DAUGHTER SOO BAEK HYANG I think Baekje is my favourite. Silla always plays dirty. 😂 Tang troops also supported Silla in destroying the Baekje army at the Battle of Hwangsanbeol… I wonder what Kim Yu-shin thought of this method of “unification”.

I recently watched the film ANSI FORTRESS so I’m in a Goguryeo mood. I will check out a few episodes of GWANGGAETO, but will probably switch to RIVER WHERE THE MOON RISES, which airs soon. 😀

            2
            0

            @wishfultoki

Thank you! Baekje has always been low key and especially Kaya. I’m glad you are giving both some loving.
It’s hard for me to credit Silla with the downfall of the other two because both were internally broken first with lack of leadership from the top. It’s too bad because their generals were capable.
I was a Kim Yushin fangirl until I realized that most of the history was written by bias Silla descendants from a later dynasty. I wonder how much of it was totally made up and exaggerated to the max.

I prefer the (2006) “Dae Jo Young” series over ANSI as far as General Yang Manchun’s story. You’d think that an important historical figure like him would have his name recorded in Samguk Sagi but no Kim Busik wrote more about Silla’s beloved Yushin and even his sister….

I’m not sure I’ll be back for RIVER WHERE THE MOON RISES but I hope it’ll do well for Kim So-hyun. I’m easily annoyed with pretty faces that can’t do sageuk and Si Joo was terrible in Moon Lovers. I don’t mind him being a support character but as a lead I have my doubt.
Here is hoping he’ll improve on this one.

Let me know how it goes. I’m in the rabbit hole with historical C-dramas.

            1
            0

It’s the crouching Tiger it girl! Right? New show!

    2
    1

Yes it’s Zhang Zi Yi. She is 40 or 41 now. She is not quite as convincing as a young girl but as she start to age in the drama she is quite good.

      0
      0

YES, THANK YOU! Your recommendation comes at the perfect time. I just dropped BLOOMS AT RUYI PAVILION because the female lead was immature, wishy-washy and showed no signs of growth by episode 20. I was only watching it for the cute secondary couple anyway.

I see we’ve both gone down the C-drama hole! 😂

    2
    2

I think you’ll enjoy this spoiled princess who is becoming the people’s princess.
I’m really loving the budding romance between the two main leads. Natural and believable. They both have the acting chops and screen presence to melt my frozen heart lol.
The male lead is no flower boy and he’s the most convincing general I’ve seen on screen in a long time.

      2
      0

      @wishfultoki and @kiara,
I guess the episode count is my biggest stumbling block to getting into Cdramas.
I know the episodes are usually shorter than Kdramas and you can skip the credits.
I subscribe to AvenueX on YouTube and I do check in with her every now and then.

Before coming to kdramas in 2016 I started with Hong Kong cop shows from TVB. I watched five dramas starting with LIVES OF OMISSION (2011). I visited HK in 2015. I visited mainland China in 2016 and 2019. I have completed only 3 cdramas: CANDLE IN THE TOMB (2016) WHEN A SNAIL FALLS IN LOVE (2016) (loved it) and THE LOST TOMB (2015). I enjoyed all 3. I followed CANDLE’s Jin Dong to SURGEONS but dropped it after episode 2.

      2
      1

        Totally understand :).
I don’t know much about China’s history so it has been a fun way to learn.
I’m stuck at home with a lot of down time so it’s a perfect time to watch long dramas.

“Joy of Life” is next on my list.

Speaking of sageuks my first Kim Ji-hoon drama was the excellent JOSEON X-FILES: SECRET BOOK (2010) and recently I saw him in the film THE AGE OF BLOOD (2017) with Jung Hae-in which is available subbed at Viki.
His FOE role is starting to expand. I enjoyed him in episode 10.

    1
    1

He saved that movie for me. He’s much more experienced in sageuks than JHE.
He was a young king in the “Iron Empress.”
I thought he was dead but it’s good to see that he made it. His parents are something else.

Line 1. I thought JHI gave a fine performance but his facial hair did not work for me, just too young. Lol.
        Line 2. 78 episodes. Bravo!
Line 3. So far KJH’s character in FOE seems like a ‘good’ guy unlike mom/dad. I thought there might be a mashup of CAHM where Nam Shin (SKJ-anti nice guy from WEATHER) came back just as nasty. I hope KJH continues as a good guy.

IT’S OK TO NOT BE OK: Eps 16 (Our last Once upon a time) “Finding the Real Face.”(Written by Ko Moon-young and illustrated  by Moon Sang-tae).
I want to keep this on my wall and I am very grateful to AzureBlueSky2020

PART 1.

Once upon a time, in a castle deep in the forest, there lived three people whose faces were stolen by the Shadow Witch. The boy wore a mask with an awkward smile. Then there was the princess who was loud but all empty inside, and there was also a man who was trapped inside a box. They could not make any facial expressions because their faces were stolen from them. They had no way of understanding each other’s feelings, so they always misunderstood one another and fought.

The Box Man spoke, “If we want to stop fighting and find happiness, we must retrieve our stolen faces.” So they hopped onto their camping car and began their journey to find their faces.
One day, they ran into a mother fox who was bawling, curled up on the snow. The Masked Boy asked the mother fox, “Ma’am why do you keep crying?”  ” I came out to find food but dropped my baby whom I was carrying on my back somewhere in the snow.” The mother fox’s tears had run dry. She wailed while beating her chest. When the Masked Boy saw that, warmed tears started gushing from his eyes. Then the snow began to melt quickly and the baby fox who was frozen under the snow soon appeared.
