Beanie level: Jang Geu-rae

I have episodes of The King and Hi bye mama that I can watch but I don’t feel like watching either of those. I am not a KES hater and Mr Sunshine was actually good imo and goblin had good moments but The King just falls flat, I don’t know if this is the same director as the previous two but over here I am not a fan of the direction or editing, I feel like a better score and a more impactful directing and editing is what the show needs. It feels like the show thinks that it is grand but us people watching are not convinced. I am tired of Hi Bye Mama too so can someone suggest me any other drama to binge watch, I watch Chinese dramas too.

A handful of us Beanies just finished watching C-drama “Skate Into Love”; A few are beginning C-dramas “Ashes Of Love” (same production team as “Ashe Of Love”), “The Untamed” and”Story Of Minglan”

    Some other good C-dramas are:
“Three Lives, Three Worlds, Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms”
    “Princess Weiyoung”
    “Rush To the Dead Summer”
“The Legends” (only for the OTP)
    “Go Go Squid”, “Princess Agents”
    “Arsenal Military Academy”
    “Story Of Yanxi”
“Put Your Head On My Shoulder”
    “A Love So Beautiful”
    “Joy Of Life”
    “Le Coup de Foudre”
    “Nirvana In Fire” (2 seasons),

    3

I have already watched most of these, I dropped skate into love for some reason maybe I will try picking it up again.

It’s a good drama that doesn’t require much brain power and is just fluff haha So it’s a good one if you’re in the mood for a drama to watch just to pass time

ha ha.. i dropped it too..
but i genuinely found it lame.. and i think the FL has started making a special place in my avoid actress list, given her acting is so irritatingly similar in each role she does – be it quiet role or a loud role

Agree with a lot of the above suggestions. Find Yourself is another recent cdrama a lot of us liked. An older one I really liked also was Love Me If You Dare.

Watched first episode of The King: Eternal Monarch and it was a bit underwhelming, the elements of a good first episode were there but the it doesn’t build in a satisfactory manner. Love Woo Do Hwan but none of his scenes with Lee Min Ho felt essential. Kim Eun Sook does bromance well but this bromance seems to be on the weaker side if you ask me. I would have preferred if they cut down on some present day monarchy scenes and increased the pacing of the drama.

Watched all episodes of Find Me In Your Memory, the premise is actually cliche, the male lead has excellent memory, is kind of rude and female starlet is optimistic and cheerful but it doesn’t actually feel that cliched.

The male lead is not really a rude character and his excellent memory is not shown as a positive thing. The female lead is not a badass and puts everyone in their place kind of person but she is not a clueless star, connects the dots together and makes you root for her.

The romance is actually on the slower side but maybe because I binged this it didn’t matter, I like the pacing and I like to see them slowly growing closer.

There is a thriller plot which some may not like but I think it is one of the better handled thriller in romance shows.

He’s not really a geniusss and she’s not a clueless diva. In fact i love the way they portray Ha Jin – a bit ditzy on first impression but actually really perceptive and quick on the uptake. And he seemed rude, but he’s really just very frank and honest (which can still be rude) but remember how he soften up when he found out about her past..but that didn’t stop him from rejecting her at first. hehe..

It’s very refreshing for such a cliched drama. I am also enjoying the thriller aspect of it. It’s very good and Beanies are discovering it a little more every day. I wish it was being recapped or had an Open thread at least.

I started welcome recently, I was really weirded out because of the premise even if animals having a human form is not unusual in my culture’s mythologies. But I still ended up trying it.

I saw a comment that it was romanticizing stalking to be honest I would agree in general but in here he is very much a cat in human form, I don’t think his actions were out of line with how a pet would behave if it ever took a human form.

Anyway I love the cat, I unlike a lot of people here don’t really mind L, I liked his previous two shows and I feel he did a decent enough job but over here I love the cat way more than him. I would totally not mind if this was a story about her and the cat while she reconnects with her first love. Also I like our female lead too, she is a cute dork.

I have been reading comments for hi bye mama on various platforms, I am a bit shy so I never responded to them but I feel like talking about it so here.

When the show began we didn’t see much of Min Jung but from the little we saw of her people already started commenting she feels more like a nanny. At the point we hadn’t really seen kang hwa do any non nanny like parenting either but nobody used the word nanny or anything similar for him.

As the show showed us Min jung’s shortcomings because of her introvert nature again many people started saying she is not a good mother, is not a “mommy”mother, she is not the only one raising the seo woo though. Every parent has shortcomings especially when it comes to the first child. Yuri would have some faults too had she been there instead. Regardless of her learning capabilities seo woo is a great kid and Min Jung wants to do her best for seo woo that alone makes her good parent.

I feel so many people are so quick to strip her of the title of being a mom to Seo Woo and I can’t help but feel it is because we have the knowledge of her being a step mom, because of the word step we need more evidence of her capabilities to deem her worthy of the title mom.

I come from an Asian family, not many parents would want their daughter to marry a widower with a kid, people will always compare, they will be more critical of her parenting capabilities for the child and later on if she has a kid people will try to find evidence of different treatment. It is not easy for the second wife at all in such a situation. While it is obvious that we viewers will analyse everything but I guess I just hope our first instinct isn’t to assume that step mom is possibly not a good one.

Now that I have written this I feel like I am overthinking lol.

No, you’re not overthinking. I share your sentiments. Right from the beginning, I thought the whole ‘return to your original place’ was never going to end that way because Yuri had no place to return to – in terms of being with Kang Hwa. The term ‘original’ insinuates that Minjung is a replacement which she isn’t. And the last episode said everything I’d been feeling – Minjung is as much Seo Woo’s mum as Yuri. She raised her and Yuri knows she can’t take that away from them.
And while I try to understand where Yuri’s family is coming from – I feel like their trying to be ‘considerate’ makes it a secret that shouldn’t even be a secret and continuously creates a gap that insinuate that Min-Jung is not her mother. But I get it’s a societal and cultural thing.

    4
    1

Coming from a large extended & mix-bag family that gets along well (mostly) it really annoys me that YuRi’s family thinks they have to be out of the picture for KangHwa to be happy with his ‘new’ wife. I get it’s prolly the culture but why can’t they break the norm? Look at how happy Seo Woo was at grandma’s. Even Min Jeong was more relaxed and happy when she stopped being ‘considerate’ and did things her way instead of being conscious of the fact that she’s a second wife & stepmom. All these people genuinely care for each other but yet they’re letting societal norms ruin their happiness.

    Thank you for writing this.
The writer nailed this problem by having our 3 wonderful women discussing about how people always assumed the worst of a stepmother, and how most of the stories we read framed them in this way, which of course will feed our mind with the worst prejudices about them. Your post is a good food for thought.

Okay Hi Bye Mama discussion time, there will be spoilers so do not read if you haven’t watched the first two episodes.
I do not want Yuri to be alive at the end of those 49 days, I saw some people rooting for a happy ending for the main couple with Yuri being back alive on MDL and I simply cannot agree. I just do not agree with the whole dead being brought back alive thing in general. I want her to help her family and get closure, that is all.
I am very curious about Min Jung, I like this writer so I hope he does not make her evil or put her aside in the story either.

“I want her to help her family and get closure, that is all”
I think that’s exactly what will happen, she’ll probably solve the issues between KH and her family and KH and MJ then to leave peacefully.

Neither do I. I honestly think it would drive me mad to see a loved one 5 years after they passed. I’ll be ok with her saying her goodbyes during those 49 days.

I guess I will share another unpopular opinion of mine with a Song Jae Jung drama coming. I do not like Queen In Hyun’s Man, that drama never clicked with me and I wasn’t a fan of any of the main characters and I will be honest I have issues with Yoo In Na’s dialogue delivery in some of her shows.
But I will say I love W, tbh I for some reason love the plots where the book characters and their universe exist in real life. I also really like extraordinary you for the same reason. Both shows have their flaws but I still really enjoyed them.

Coffee House: I loved it back then and rewatched it many times.

Queen In Hyun’s Man: I disliked it for many reasons. I even rewatched it a few times to make sure I’m not biased or anything. I dislike it.

Nine: I love it so much. I have rewatched it many times and still do.

The Three Musketeers: I LOVE it. This one too is on my constant rewatch rotation list.

W: It is among my 20 most favorite shows.

Memories of Alhambra: A very gripping show. I liked it A LOT, but it was too emotionally draining for me to attempt a rewatch anytime soon. Maybe one day…

    I guess I’m definitely a SJJ fan.

*high five from another Song Jae-jung fans*

Though for me, I love Queen In-hyun’s man to pieces (Kim Boong-do is still one of the best male lead I’ve watched), but I have issues with the second half of W.

Loved Queen In-hyun’s Man and Nine, liked W until it fizzled out, and couldn’t stand Alhambra! 😂

It’s great to know that people can love things that I don’t.

Saw the teaser for the new Kim Eun Sook drama, I am intrigued. Okay time for me to share some of my unpopular opinions in this community.
I do not dislike Kim Eun Sook, I will be honest I have had troubles completing every drama of hers I have tried but I still think she is talented. I think the way she is trying something new with every drama is admirable. Even if I am salty about the way half of her shows end and the fact that Heirs exists, for the most part the dramas remain memorable and have moments I have enjoyed a lot.
I do not dislike Lee Min Ho as an actor (for the most part) and I am someone who dropped Boys Over Flowers in 5 episodes, dropped Heirs at some point too and I am not a fan of City Hunter either. While he has his shortcomings, I feel he is also charming at times and I enjoy watching him those times. The most problematic thing about him for me is that Park Shin Hye rooftop kiss, I read somewhere it was his idea, don’t know how true that is but that fact stays in the back of my mind whenever I see him. Regardless I still don’t find myself being upset when he is cast for roles and always try giving his dramas a shot.

CLOY was just not a show for me. I enjoyed it in the beginning but at the end found myself not caring for the leads. To be honest kdramas are not the most sensible and that is why I like them at times, so for me to say CLOY was bad because it wasn’t sensible is a bit hypocritical. I always had issues with this writer, I wasn’t on the you from another star hype train either, all her shows at the end become too dramatic. I do like the characters in her shows at the beginning but their charm gets drowned in the drama which just puts me off. Then her characters always have past encounters, I don’t mind the destiny themes but they always bother me in her shows and the characters become too cheesy as well. Similar flaws exist in other kdramas I like I guess this writer’s execution is just not my thing.

6
3

    SPOILERS

In CLOY I still cared for the second leads, I liked how their story progressed but they got that ending, not only was is it sad it was executed in the most cliched way ever, I cringed so much when he came to rescue her, I felt like I was watching an 80s movie instead. Plus I find it sad how most writers only care about giving the main leads a HE and used the second leads to inject some sadness. Kept Dan pining after RJH because they wanted to create conflict and then killed GSJ and gave her lonely existence.

I agree – I only watched 2 episodes of CLOY and dropped it because I realized that this writer has a gift for characters but not for story/plot, and honestly, these days if it’s not slice-of-life, then characters alone are not enough to keep me engaged in the story. I think that’s why I liked The Producers (though it’s far from perfect), but also explains why I couldn’t make it more than an episode into Legend of the Blue Sea. I suspect I could binge CLOY if I’m bored and need something mindless, but like YFAS I would probably rarely think about it again as a whole, though the characters would certainly be memorable.

I enjoyed it because of all the side characters plus a curiosity to see how they treated North Korea in the drama. As a stand alone love story I would skip it, but with the ensemble cast from North Korea it had the heart that keeps me watching.

Back when Angel’s Last Mission: Love aired, I watched the first four episodes but didn’t get the time to continue and the mixed reviews didn’t help me in picking it back up. I ended up watching it now and I am surprised I actually enjoyed it. I mean yeah it was bit messy in the end with the endless noble idiocy and had glaring flaws but I loved the main couple. Shin hye sun was amazing in her role and tbh I didn’t find L bad, he had some great moments in this show too. I think binge watching is best for shows like these you get past the flaws easily and enjoy without putting a lot of thought.

Just saw the cast for hi bye mama and realized Loony from Prison Playbook is the male lead. I loved him in FOS and Prison Playbook. Also his second wife in the show is Min Seo Young from Go Back Couple.

I just finished rewatching go back couple, while the show had its flaws, overall it is still a show I really love. I always shed tears while watching the scenes with Jin Joo and her mom.
I am also watching Crash Landing on You, that show has like a dozen things that don’t make sense in every episode but I still enjoy watching it while shaking my head at the same time, the north korean soldiers gang and the ahjumma gang are my favorite people in the show.
I also tried watching Romantic Teacher, while I like Cha Eun Jae sometimes, I don’t think her character makes sense from a logical point of view. I liked the first season a decent amount but didn’t love it and I like this new season a little less than the first but I still am somewhat interested.
I am starting When Camellia Blooms, hopefully it will be good because my expectations are high because of the ratings.
Based on the fanwall looks like beanies are watching heirs, I have watched and rewatched it a couple of times, I didn’t care for a single character certainly cared about the main leads the least and that kiss on the rooftop is always fast forwarded but I still kind of have fun watching heirs, I kind of treat it is as a comedy show. Interestingly I couldn’t stand boys over flowers when they are kind of similar I guess.

Everyone has discussed a lot about Dan Oh, Haru and Baek Kyung. I am in the mood the mood to discuss Yeo Ju Da. I think one thing Extraordinary You shows is how that typical candy set up that every other drama uses would be tiring in reality. Everything about Ju Da is tragic, she is poor, she is bullied by others, her grandmother is sick and she can do nothing to help herself out. The only bright aspect of her life that she will get that happy ending, that the male lead will always choose her and end up with her regardless of what his mother says or whatever Sae Mi does. Now if Dan Oh and her gang meddle with the storyline and Ju Da’s happy ending is put at risk, the only bright aspect of her life will go. So if Ju Da tries her best to keep the story as it is I won’t see her as evil, she is just someone defending her future.
Now I saw someone saying why is she pretending to be unaware, what will she get by telling everyone she is aware, she wants the story to stay as it is, things would just get complicated between her and Do Hwa if she lets him know. Ju Da thinks that being with Nam Ju is the only guaranteed way to get a happy ending.

i agree.. but we are already on ep 10.. and i don’t see YJD fighting to keep storyline straight or that she realizes DO is messing up the storyline..

We have like two different love stories going on.. with a bridge where LDH and DO catch up and interchange snippets of their stories for benefit of audience to link the two lovelines 😛

At max, the route drama seems to be taking is YJD going against mom, saemi and other people who are bullying her.. fighting them off to preserve her happy ending.. her struggle will potentially be curbing her feelings for LDH.. and ofcourse, they have shown LDH as a happy person.. which is going to turn tragic pretty soon

I think, everyone will choose to take a step to go back into oblivion.. whether killing themselves offstage does it or however..except DO, Haru ( BK – i am on fence.. what is the point of forgetting everything and going back to that toxic environment.. he should choose to be like squid fairy)

    ***********************************
Lastly, my heart is very soft towards BK’s brother.. and his cuteness does not help

I want a love story for him..

    4
    0

I agree with this. Even if she later realize that DO and Haru is trying to change the story and she goes evil on them, I would’ve still understood her. Candy role sucks until you marry the rich guy obsessed with you. I feel bad for her for that.

    4
    0

The sad part is that she isn’t even all that happy in the scenes with her “prince charming”. She prefers Do Hwa, but poor guy can’t even do anything to help her.

    4
    1

I feel like Do Hwa would do more to help her if he knew she wouldn’t forget. But it requires both of them to trust their own feelings and for her to open up. Which may be hard, given all the crappy things going on in her life.

      3
      0

I really really like your analysis of this. Her outburst to Do Hwa about the hardships of a Candy… I was soooo sad for her.
What a contrast to every moment that I rolled my eyes at her irritating innocence. How tired the poor girl must feel to have to go along with the writer when put in stupid scenes where she believes her bullies when they tell her Nam Ju’s looking for her. urgh!

I had the exact same reaction about Love O2O, King’s Avatar and Yang Yang. I just finished watching Love O2O yesterday and I spent most of the last 15 episodes complaining about how horribly boring the main couple were. And I felt both actors did a poor job. So I was hesitant to watch King’s Avatar because of Yang Yang (I had actually watched half of Love O2O last year but just now finally finished watching it). But then I ended up loving KA and YY has redeemed himself in my eyes (there are better actors out there but he still did a good job in KA).

And The Untamed is of course pure love 😍

I am watching tale of nokdu these days and as a nctzen whose biases are doyoung and mark I feel so proud when their ost gets played at the end of the episodes.

I am watching ep 3 of Hotel del Luna and IU and YJG have zero chemistry, whenever Taeyeon’s ost plays it feels so wrong because that moment doesn’t seem romantic at all making the ost seem out of place.

I watched this week’s episodes and yep, still not feeling it, too. But I could feel the chemistry between Man-Weol and Captain though so I don’t know what’s wrong. It feels like they’re not set-up for romance.

The second episode of WWW was also great, the three female leads are doing a great job, I like the fact they are competent but are also vulnerable. I love how ISJ’s character is not afraid of opinions that clash with her own and also appreciates honesty. If you like fluffy romance then the romance in this one does have its moments but it is not at the center stage so if you are only interested in this show because of the romance tag then it may not be suitable for you. Overall I feel the show delivered strong pilot episodes and I am hoping it remains strong for the rest of its run.

regarding romance in the drama. we are still just in the start of the drama, so no wonder there is not allot of romance scenes this early. But hope the writer balance the three woman and the romance in a good way. after second episode I think that side of the drama gonna be slow burn 🙂
