In my continued efforts to try new things (after trying a makjang and trying a weekender last week), today I decided to dip a toe into daily dramas with the new show Unpredictable Family and it is honestly not what I expected?
For some reason I thought daily dramas would be like weekenders on steroids, kind of like soap operas in the US. Maybe they normally are, but this one is different from Live Your Own Life, which is really the only weekender I’ve seen to compare (other than 2006’s I Really Really Like You, which funnily enough seemed to have the same budget that LYOL does in 2023 lmao).
Rather than weekenders, it’s kind of giving me Disney Channel original series? The sets are simple and the budget is low and the acting isn’t the greatest (although I’ve seen worse even in primetime shows), but it’s actually super digestible and easy to watch. The set-up is very k-drama with the now-rich mother character finding her long-last family, but it’s not really played in a melodramatic way (yet) and the show seems to be poking fun at itself more than anything. Maybe it’ll veer into the melodrama later, but for now it’s actually just a light and breezy family drama with honestly cute family dynamics.
Like, I’m not saying it’s good, but it’s kinda cute? I could keep watching?
And Nam Sang-ji is adorable. I wonder if any of these younger actors will end up making it as primetime regulars. Lots of actors start out in daily dramas and weekenders and I imagine it’s fun to see them make the jump to primetime (like the cast of Ugly Alert).
I think I have seen only one weekender so far – Be Strong, Geum-soon. It was from 2005, and the only reason I started it was because of Lee Min-ki lol. I planned on watching only the scenes with him on it but it was surprisingly good so I ended up watching everything.

This is so true! For BSGS, who would have thought that the two rookie male actors (LMK and Kim Nam-gil) would become two of the most sought-after A-list actors years later.
Funny thing is while watching BSGS, I had been seeing social media posts mentioning KNG as starring in BSGS. I was like, where is KNG in that drama?! I really couldn’t pinpoint. Then after long pondering, I finally realized he was the one playing Geum-soon’s husband. 🤯 He looked kind of different it was not easy to recognize him right away.

Wow, I didn’t realize that Kim Nam-gil was in that, too!
Speaking of him, I’m really looking forward to Song of the Bandits this week!
