Second rec would be Zhao Lusi’s OST from Hidden Love. Both the drama and its songs perfectly illustrated the feeling of first love.

#LovelyRunnerPL

I keep thinking of Hindi love songs of the 2000s and 2010s whenever I think of this adorable OTP. If there’s one thing Bollywood does well, it’s love stories, esp. stories of young love. Sharing one of my favourites, which also has a very similar ‘crush on my neighbour’ vibe in the video.

Love the humour in this MV. The song’s pretty catchy too!

I was wondering if we\’d get a cameo by [REDACTED] at some point in Welcome to Samdal-ri and we did! I think I\’m becoming too familiar with dramas 😅.

You mean spoiled by the fan service. 🤣👍

It’s like the BTS reveal during MMH…if you don’t know what it is about, or in this case who that is (I totally do not…who was that???) then it’s sort of like, “I guess I’m a dolt and not part of the intended audience??” But nice for those who “get it!!”

      2
      2

Oh I didn’t even think of that. I doubt there’s anyone in Korea who doesn’t know her lol. But I guess it’ll be different for international (Netflix) audiences 🤔.

        1

          ….aaaand, I still don’t know who she is, despite/because I’m “international!”

Thanks, Miso! Looking over her filmography/TV-ography, I see why I don’t know her. I have seen zero things she’s in!

That is to say, I have definitively found out that, indeed, I am not in the target audience for this cameo and perhaps not even for this drama!!! No wonder I don’t care whether or not it is good or horrible!!! 🤣

I have only seen one of her shows, but having been a fan of Rain since 2007, being on DB since 2010, and with her and Rain having started dating in 2012, I have practically known her for most of my kdrama-fan life. At this point I guess my only watching one of her shows is more surprising than your not knowing her 😄

She is a very famous actress Kim Tae-hee who agreed to this special appearance to support the script writer. She is married to another global star Rain’s.

Days 23 – 30. Freestyle

I had planned to catch-up with the days I’d missed but I saw the tragic news that day and couldn’t work up the effort anymore.

But I don’t want to end the year this way so I’ll share one of my favourite OSTs of the year – a sweet lullaby – very warm and comforting.

May be this is the drama I need to watch right now. A balm to the hurting soul.
I will Atleast watch some random episodes. Thanks for this post.

iirc This particular OST was indeed inspired by the traditional music that comes from the subculture of the ethnic minority population there, the Miao People, which is also featured in the drama itself

This drama is so special and so beautiful! One of a kind. Thanks for sharing this video.

It truly is heartbreaking. I can’t seem to come to terms with this.
I cannot even imagine what his family is going through.
I just keep thinking about all the words from My Mister and it makes me more sad.

I keep remembering his dramas and how full of life he was. Can’t even imagine what his family must be going through.

Day 22. Best cameo

Has to be Jin Seon-kyu in King the Land. Watching him hilariously croon Taeyang’s Eyes, Nose, Lips made my day, maybe even my year 😂.

Honourable mention – Rowoon in A Time Called You. More chemistry in his scenes than in the entirety of the show honestly.

I did end up dropping KTL (sorry!! 🙈), but I got to see this cameo and it was FABULOUS!!!

No need to be sorry (to me at least 😂)! This cameo was one of the more memorable things about KTL for me too!

Day 21. The OST I’ve been obsessed with

I liked See You in My 19th Life more than most people and I also liked its OST more than most 😊, especially Down by Jo Yuri.

It has that peppy, frothy, light-hearted feel that’s perfect for a rom-com OST. It’s also extremely earworm-y 😂.

Day 20. Favourite kiss

This is the k-drama choice. I might post another one for c-dramas 😄.

Jin-hee and Jae-won’s first kiss in Not Others because it’s so understated and pretty much the opposite of most k-drama first kisses.

The sweetness and simplicity of the confession and the kiss 🥰.

Honourable mention – the corridor kiss in Crash Course in Romance, where they sort of smile/laugh into the kiss. Adorable.

Day 19A. Best used trope

Contract marriage in SO MANY SHOWS but esp. Perfect Marriage Revenge. The trope itself is used very straightforwardly but the way they became true partners and eventually a proper couple was so satisfying.

Day 19B. Best subverted trope

Two friends falling for the same person in Behind Your Touch. Yes Ok-hee was ridiculously OTT in the beginning when she fell for Jang-yeol but the way she got over it with Squid-face Jang-yeol was hilarious and awesome.

You have love a second lead who consciously and deliberately removes themselves from a triangle, especially so early on, and in such a creative way.

#2023 Drama Round-up
Day 18. Favourite villain

Lady Park from The Matchmakers and it’s not close. Villains have been caricaturishly bad this year I feel. She was the exception. You can feel her grief and rage as a mother, her compassion for Soon-deok, but also the extent and brilliance of her scheming. An extremely well-written, complex character.

Of course there’s a case to be made about whether she can be classified as a villain at all. But her schemes and plots have an impact on our protagonists and she may be involved (to whatever degree) in the treason plot and, possibly, the Princess’s death, so I’ll still put her in this bucket. Obviously her character goes beyond the confines of the term and that’s why she’s my favourite.

14
2

I agree with all that you’ve said. One my favourite villains ever, not just 2023, I think. She is brilliant, both the character and the actress.

    7

Yup she was excellent in The Red Sleeve and Revenant too.

Day 17. Oldie (non-2023 drama) I loved the most

The only non-2023 kdrama I watched this year was Kiss Sixth Sense. This is not a recommendation though. Just watch the make-out scene on YT and move on!

    Great tip!

I also watched this year Kiss and I really enjoyed it until the last episode, that I watched in shock wondering wtf was going on. So yes, unless you quit it at episode 15, don’t watch.

I agree with @eazal : stop before the last episode, then it is fine. 🙂

Yup, stop at the end of ep. 10, maybe FF 11-12 to catch a bit of backstory (no spoiler, you’d know if you watch it) and then bail. But it does have multiple kisses worthy of the title.

    1

Yes, Beanies should figure out the point at which they bail for themselves but bail they must 🤣

Day 16. My guilty pleasure ☺

I wasn’t going to write anything for this prompt because I’m totally okay liking all kinds of things without feeling guilty 😄🤷‍♀️.

But a conversation on the WWW thread reminded me that I watched a lot of extremely mid c-dramas solely to look at all the pretty people 🤣

I don’t feel guilty about it but I do feel the need to share so here’s some pretty people as a bonus…

9
9

You know, there has been a serious shortage of k-drama male leads with manes of glory over the past few years, and period c-dramas do an excellent job of making up for that.

    5
    1

They really are! Though Xu Kai has talked about having to get a hair transplant of sorts because all the wigs were receding his hairline 😬.

      4
      1

I hate to think how much work goes into wig and hair maintenance to get all those glorious flowing locks. I also always wonder how actors don’t get tangled up in them during their more physical scenes.

        4
        1

Maybe they do 😂 and we just get the perfect take. But yeah it must take hours to keep them sorted.

I can watch anything with “Zhang Linghe”, because he is an absolute feast to look at. Not a guarantee that I will finish the show, but I will pick it up just for him.

He was beautiful (exquisite) in “My Journey to you”.

Day 15. Special Kimchi Slap Edition: Worst Parent

I was prepared to go on a rant (because honestly why are there SO MANY awful parents in dramaland??) but there are simply too many to even rant about. And really a Kimchi Slap is hardly enough. Most of these evil parents and step-parents are just downright criminal and deserve to be in prison.

So I’ll choose the one the writers themselves labeled ‘Nappeun Eomma’ or ‘Bad Mom’. Dear Young-soon, realising you’re a bad parent doesn’t end with just saying so and then never changing your behaviour 🤦‍♀️. Also maybe try not to almost murder your son, okay?

13
5

She was counting on cancer as a redemption arc… I’m just raging about it. Sole redeeming feature: Being dead. Well, someone’s coming back as a pile of bacon in their next life.

I just spilled coffee on myself laughing at “pile of bacon” 💀😭

because we all know, dying erases everyone’s sins and turns people into saints *rolls eyes*

      1
      1

this is unfortunately part of most social norms around the world — once you’re dead, you become a saint, an angel, a forever loved princess or prince, a star who shone brightly in the night… regardless of how bearable or unbearable you might have been while alive.
Which is interesting because we all die at some point. Are we all angels in disguise? (Don’t answer that; it’s a rhetorical question. We are not. We just hate the idea of being meaningless little creatures and prefer to elevate our unavoidable end to heights it couldn’t possibly rise to)

Day 14B. Best womance

K-drama
Maybe Ok-hee’s crew in Behind Your Touch? Even brothers and mothers-in-law got involved. That’s true devotion to sisterhood!

C-drama
All of the women in Meet Yourself. Hongdou, Nanxing, Nana, Qingtian, Grandma, the mothers, the ‘aunts’… a community of women helping and building each other up 🥰.

#2023 Drama Round-up
Day 14A. Best bromance

K-drama
I loved Jang Ju-won and Kim Doo-sik in Moving. They don’t have a lot in common but manage to always be there for each other across decades and countries.

C-drama
Has to be Xiao Se and Wu Xin in The Blood of Youth. There is an alternate universe where this would be the central relationship/ romance of the show.

14
2

One connection in Moving that doesn’t fall under bromance but certainly shows respect, trust, and mutual understanding is Ju-won and Jae-man.

Despite all the shortcomings we are shown about Jae-man and the introduction of his limited cognitive abilities, I remember that when the school is under attack, he’s doing a much better job at getting rid of the threats… Rough, raw and brutal strength for the win.

But there’s a level of understanding between the two which I find really… well moving:

The fact that they not only can work together for the same cause on 2 occasions and with no need for communication —
The fact they both trust the other to fulfil his part of the unspoken agreement —
The fact that, when he comes to the school in the last episodes, Jae-man clearly shows that he would have stayed to help those he didn’t even know (and who rejected him from the NIS because he wasn’t judged worthy then), and he’s not doing it for his son only at this point —
The fact that Ju-won treats him with the same kindness he received from the few people who showed him respect

This doesn’t quite fit under bromance because there isn’t enough to figure out what it is… but there are already all the ingredients you need to brew a bromance story.

    3
    1

Oh that’s a beautiful observation – them working in near-silence but effectively and well with each doing their part. One of the things I loved about Moving was that the good guys were good through and through. They were unfailingly kind to everyone even those they met in passing.

Day 13. Drops!

Already mentioned this in the DB thread on this topic – I dropped only 3 but given that I can\’t remember dropping any last year, it\’s still a massive improvement!

The ones I dropped were Kokdu\’s Deity, Oh! Young-shim, and Destined With You but I don’t know if I can be considered to have learned from my mistakes.

There we SO many more I should have dropped such as Bo-ra! Deborah, The Heavenly Idol, Strong Girl Nam-soon, the second seasons of pretty much every show… ┗( T﹏T )┛

16
2

Yeah, not a good year for second seasons – maybe the industry will reconsider this whole concept?

I wish they would…but seems doubtful given they keep making more of these…

Day 12. Best suit-wearer

All the good answers are already taken! I can’t add anything more to the multitude of beautiful gifs Beanies have shared so I’ll give a c-drama answer for this too 😂 😅 .

I normally don’t notice men’s clothes in c-dramas beyond a “oh he looks great!” but I remember noticing and loving Gong Jun’s wardrobe in Rising With the Wind.

I read somewhere that 140+ looks were created for him and the effort shows. There were some really interesting splashes of colour and some fabulous coats. I wouldn’t mind wearing a female version of a lot of these looks myself 🤣.

Day 11. Nam Da-reum prize for best child actor

Jeon Yu-na was astonishingly good in The Kidnapping Day but I’ll give the award this year to Moon Woo-jin because watching him grow with each drama has been a joy over the years.

I thought he was already fantastic way back in What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim but he’s only gotten better over time. He also has like 30+ drama credits already at the age of 14! Even Nam Da-reum himself wasn’t this prolific at his age 😅.
