Beanie level: Entertainer-in-training

Ok.. this one dropped into my house a week ago, and with our best effort we still can’t locate his owner. So now he is living with me (who had never raised a cat, and this is a hairy one).

Love, Feb

Confusion is an understatement. The whole situation was a surprise in every sense. Btw, we call him Kaitoom. He seems to be used to being in an air-coned room which we can’t afford, so I think I’m gonna have his hair cut. He won’t be as pretty, but hopefully he won’t pant too much and feel better in general.

    Such a beautiful cat!
I hope you can find his owners, but if it’s not possible, I’m sure he’ll be happy with you.

Thanks, Isa. I actually am being monitored for asthma, so I’m not too sure I will be able to raise him for more than a couple months (before I get the verdict from my doctor). I don’t think I’m allergic to his fur, though.

He’s adorable. Maybe he ran away for air conditioning and now you are his person.

I really have no idea. The strange thing is that my sister told me when she saw the cat inside our gate, there was one car with a woman inside. My intuition is that she dropped him off for some reason. He didn’t look like he was running for a long time either. Everything about him still looked pristine when we met him being barked at by our dogs.

Looks like this adorbs 😻 has marked you as its butler!!

    5
    1

Trust me, the word butler has taken on the whole different meaning, let me tell you. I was so worried about him because a cat has his own mind and he meows to mean a hundred different things. 😒

      2

Oh, he’s so beautiful! And he will be a shedder with that long hair, no use in sugar coating it. Also he will almost certainly need brushing to keep his coat from getting knots, esp in the heat. I believe our allergies are to something in their saliva which they use to self-clean, you may not be aggravated by it 🤞🏼
I want to reach through the screen and give him a big squeeze 😻

    5
    1

He is really soft furball. He doesn’t use his nails even when he doesn’t like what I do to him ((hair brushing))- he just tries to push me away and walk away. He is a very strange cat. Perhaps all cats are strange.

      4

The cat has a bell which is usually a device of knowing its movement. It doesn’t look like a desertion.

    4
    1

Yes, so that’s why I will print out pictures of him and post in places around the neighborhood again. My neighborhood has a lot of students living because there is one uni nearby, so let’s see if his owner can find him.

      4
      1

Your area may have (multiple) online groups for lost pets where you can post his picture, here we also notify the local police in case his owner has called them. Lots of people post lost and found pets on an app here named NextDoor, if you have that.

I agreed. Tbh, I couldn’t get it in my first watch. I almost couldn’t finish it, and when finished thought it was so-so. But that’s the magic of it, because I kept coming back to this so-so show again and again, and it’s getting better with every rewatch. Magical.

This OST is wonderful. It’s probably my favorite theme from all the Ghibli movies (along with Path of the Wind, from Tonari no Totoro).

It is. It makes me feel like the time when I was young and everything seemed so much more simple and slow (many times- boring) than nowadays, both within and outside myself. 💗 But I somehow miss that time. Am I already old??? Lol

One of the best SMLs in recent history: Jo-han (Tell Me That You Love Me)
Can’t believe I fell for him as much as (or a little more than) the ML.
He is now Puppy No.1

You can keep my 🩷.

He is one of the BEST things about the show (and the show has A LOT of best things).
He stole my heart and hasn’t returned.

Isn’t he just so CUTE? Like as Jo-han here? I mean if the FL didn’t choose the ML, I would have NO PROBLEM at all shipping these two together *wipes tears of imagined joy*.

Did I already say he is SO CUTE?

I haven’t watched Sam-dal, so no idea who Sang Do is. But based on your newly created rating scale, I must say I’m impressed and feel so proud of Jo-han!!!

(I know he tries to hint his feelings to the FL and to make her spend time with him, but boy can try. At least in the end, he always respects her boundaries and is always there to support her- even when he wishes this love will pass without pain. Puppy is still heartbroken in the last scene. 🎬

Jo Han was in love with Mo Eun but he respected her as a human being, and he genuinely appreciated and cared about his friendship with her.

Sang Do doesn’t know what respect means, and he never really thought of Sam Dal as his friend.
I usually detest the second leads, but Sang Do managed to be worse than the typical stereotypes.

Plus, he is successful in his career. Granted, he is a bit obsessed sometimes with his work, but he never forgets ME and always makes time for her. I think that’s kind of sweet. And as you said, he genuinely cares about this friendship with her.

Not unlikable but I would say unrelatable (for me) characters. 😭

          2

I think Soundtrack is a hard watch as I found the female lead frustrating but a lot of beanies felt she was right to stick to her independent stance because of the way her boyfriend tried to support her, they felt the couple had not moved on enough for things to work the second time round and they didn’t like the end. It was ok and the second lead was sweet but it is hard for me to recommend as the other beanies’ reviews were very mixed.

Tell Me That You Love Me is an exquisite art piece, period.

ESSAY ON TELL ME THAT YOU LOVE ME (with spoilers)
I really don’t know where to start. As I think being honest is the best policy, I’ll try to be most honest here. (PART I – Overall feelings about the show. Part II – Overall feelings about the story)

Part I – Overall feelings about the show

During the first 11 eps, things have been wonderful. We have been shown a couple, one hearing and one hearing-impaired, that is developing their relationship in what feels like a healthy way. They are not a contemporary couple as they have a major obstacle in their life to face (aka how they communicate), but it looks like they are doing it well. The FL is so strong and adamant in wanting this relationship to work. She loves him. And he seems to love her, too. The pace of the show at this point is marvelous: It allows us viewers to breathe, reflect, relax, and feel our inner peace knowing that these two will overcome whatever thrown their way.

However, I feel the mood changes beginning from ep 12. Everything about the show is still exquisite, but something is different. There are many things, many characters, taking much of the time from the main story. To me, the writing in these eps is still as excellent as ever; but because of episode limitation, the directing seems a bit rushed and the pace forced to be faster. It doesn’t work well because this is a show that relies so much on giving the audience time to process their feelings for the characters. By having all the important bits happening at the same time, or at best one after the other in a fast manner, makes it quite suffocating to watch. I like the stories of these side characters because they are necessary for the leads to get the closure they desperately need, but to be forced-fed in a couple of eps is very difficult to process. I think the show would do well if it was a 20ep show instead of 16, and if it tried to remain that slow, reflective pace it has in the first 11 eps.

I do not have problems with the writing at all. I think it’s exquisite. However, I think, if I can be frank, that I didn’t quite understand the FL character in the later eps. There is everything that should make me understand her there (e.g., she knows her mother isn’t her birth mother, she tries hard to make the relationship between her and the ML work, she is very understanding and kind, she is loyal and does not lead her friend on, she is straight-forward and honest, she communicates with the ML and always ends up seeing the ML does something that contradicts his “words” he gave her, she is tired and weary of their possible future and their potential kids’ future), but her character feels disjointed from the first 11 eps. This show does focus on BOTH leads, but I can only kind of understand the ML and where he is coming from. There is consistency in his acting and character development. I think the character development is also there for the FL, so I think it MIGHT boil down to the fact that the the actress who plays the FL still has to gain more experience. Don’t get me wrong, I love the actress in most of the scenes, and this is especially true in the first 11 eps. Her acting is, to me, on par with the ML’s. However, when it comes to the part where many things happen and she has to show complicated feelings, I see inconsistency in her character.

But somehow, I think my love for the show is too much for me to nitpick it. Of course, there are certain things that I think the show could have done without, but for me, it is like an exquisite art piece that I will be looking at it for a long time. There can be many interpretations when one looks at an art piece, and I think this show is just like that. For some, this might spell confusion, but for me, art is always confusing because it has no one correct way to interpret it. Maybe when one likes something so much, one is somewhat blinded. For a show that made me laugh out loud, cry by heart out, giggle like crazy, smirk numerous times, and often within minutes after the other, I think the crew has done a brilliant job at crafting this art piece. It restores my love for Kdramas. I really can’t take my eyes off of it.

And I have a feeling that I’ll come to appreciate it even more in my rewatch. It reminds me of Il Mare, When the Weather is Fine, and My Ajusshi (especially in those heavy episodes). One of, if not the best, Kdramas I’ve ever watched. It’s so beautiful in all aspects.

Part II – Overall feelings about the story
This show is exquisite in that it is so simple and honest in its story telling. It tells stories that we all can relate to because these are ordinary things that happen in our daily life. But the simplicity here, together with its exquisite directing, cinematography, art direction, music and costume departments and others, makes it a standout show for me.

I love that the story is about 2 people, as ordinary as any of us, who have gone through obstacles in their life. They have been hurt, and they are trying to heal. The show keeps highlighting the importance of honest communication, by constantly showing us that open, honest, and gentle communication, regardless of the form, can overcome almost everything. The leads, as well as many side characters, are doing this over and over again throughout the whole show. These conversations can be direct or subtle, but with good intentions in the hearts of the speakers, understanding is bound to take place. On the other hand, when there is no communication, whatever the reason is, misunderstanding occurs and it will inevitably lead to pain.

Another theme here that repeats itself again and again is love and acceptance. Though I do agree that too many things and complicated feelings happen in between eps 12-15, I still think that the writer did an exquisite job at being consistent throughout the show in showing us that love and acceptance go hand-in-hand. Without one of these, another cannot exist. And acceptance here means acceptance of the other person as well as acceptance of all of oneself. The clearest example of the former here is how unconditionally accepting and loving Ki-hyun is towards the ML and his hearing-impaired wife (and his first child). We also see ME’s parents coming to terms with their daughter dating a hearing-impaired man because they don’t want their daughter to feel sad. We see Jo-han support the relationship regardless of his feelings (while trying to hide, and sometimes hints) his feelings for ME (lol). We see ME’s brother and friend support the relationship in their own way (i.e., the brother, though not agreeing with his sister’s choice, does not outright show his disapproval). For the latter, we see this theme in the intertwined relationships between the ML, SK, and Do-hun. When SK faces the reality that she did the ML wrong, it is the first time she really accepts it. She extends this fact to the ML, allowing him to let go of the guilt that has been eating him and preventing him from loving himself. She also finally thanks Do-hun for saving her life, the fact that sets DH free of his resentment towards her and the ML (if he chooses to, ofc, lol). When the ML finally learns that he did not do anything wrong, when he can finally love himself again, he extends that love to Do-hun by apologizing for disappearing for many years and let DH alone face the criticism he didn’t deserve. Though I don’t think the ML did him anything wrong, but by being kind he allows his friend to heal. By help from the FL, the ML also has a chance to learn of his mother’s love for him for all the past years. The FL, by having that honest conversation with her mother, sets herself free from thinking that she has to earn love instead of receiving one. When her mother says the FL actually chose her by calling her “mother”, I think the FL gains confidence which leads to her character development and maturity in that 1-year time skip.

Because one can truly love others when one knows how to love oneself, though I agree with @reply1988 also that some professional help might have helped many of these characters processing their feelings and not hurting others in the process, I think the show has done a great job at showing that the leads may need to work through their own issues, insecurities, and finding closure to whichever closure they need first before they feel secure in being in a romantic relationship. When the ML got his closure, knowing that he was not at fault for that fire incident, and that he is actually loved by his mother, he relearns how to love himself. Before this, it makes sense that he might not have shown much assurance to ME because of his insecurities. But this happens around the same time that ME loses trust in him and in their potential future because of various reasons (noted that at this time she still hasn’t had that conversation with her mother). She has pulled back her feelings and begun to question his feelings and the relationship. If the ML heeded his fri…[Read more]

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on this drama it was really interesting to read and so many points I agree with. I can’t believe you didn’t mention the art class students as they showed the young and free teenage energy in a different way to the male lead in his student days. They had an experience of life where deafness was not hidden or a barrier to participation. The ML tells them he wishes he had been able to participate in something similar when he was a child and they were able to include a hearing person in the group and accept that he was one of them and he got to be finally accepted after being relentlessly bullied in the past.

Mom Bean, you just said something I missed saying in my original post! That scene of the ML looking at his imagined child self having the opportunity to learn art in the very class he teaches his students and being accepted for who he was is SO SO beautiful. I can’t believe I missed that!

But that’s the beauty of this show: There are so many things to like, to interpret, to dislike, to be disappointed or satisfied with.

And ofc, the scene you mentioned is very beautiful. They are a very delightful bunch of people on screen.

It is such a beautiful essay. On a first look the drama does seem uneven in the second half but life can be (IS) rather messy and somehow we just have to find our way out of it. Relationships are never easy leave alone one which has so many in-built challenges. I do think a rewatch would indeed help us appreciate this more. Thank you for taking out the time and sharing your thoughts with us.

My pleasure, Cera, and thanks for your kind words. I have the same feeling that a rewatch will make it clearer for us what we feel is confusing during our first watch as eps 12-14 have so many things happening it was quite and still difficult to process them all…

Made more poignant in the drama by knowing the ML cannot enjoy it.

        1

I haven’t thought about that before. But you know there is one scene that sits in my heart even now? When the ML says he feels like living in a deep ocean, and after that they have a date in an aquarium. It’s so sweet to me that ME tries to make him see that even in a deep ocean of his, she is there with him and they can enjoy the journey together. I believe there is deep love there, so I have no doubt viewing the ending as them trying the relationship again anew.

          1
          1

ALL relationships need work … constantly. Here it is more challenging and the only way to make it work is by loving more. I completely agree there is deep love.

I just finished Tell Me You Love Me. I was gonna put it above Strangers, but I felt there were too many things going on (and perhaps a bit confusing directing) in the last 4 eps, I’m placing it on …

4
15

par with Strangers for now. It’s likely that when some time has passed, or when I rewatch it again, it’ll transcend Strangers (for me). But we shall see.

It’s safe to say now that I’ve watched it all that it is an art piece. If you like Il Mare, When the Weather is Fine, a bit of My Ajusshi, I think this one is my recommendation for you.

    3
    2

While the initial part made it seem flawless, the wariness of Senior Beans was justified in the end. Not perfect, but then life rarely is, just a story which at the end I’m not unhappy I saw. A comfort watch to go back to because now I know what parts to skip. 🤣

      3
      1

You’re right: There is nothing as perfection in the world. But when we like something so much, maybe we are willing to turn a blind eye on some aspects of it and enjoy it to our heart’s content.

I am happy that you are not unhappy after finishing this one. 😊

        2
        0

Impressive link to Il Mare, which was a delightful watch, I am so grateful to the beanie who recommended it. The other two I feel have darker elements than Tell me although I only watched a couple of episodes of My Ajusshi as it was too bleak for me at the time.

I agree Tell me was a standout piece but not one I would watch again. The second female lead felt like she was imposing her need to heal on the male lead even though she got the resolution she wanted in the end. She kept ignoring his request to stop talking about old times. It felt like an abuse of power as they had a working relationship so he had to maintain contact with her but she kept blurring the boundaries and offloading during work conversations. That storyline tainted the drama for me and I feel they could have explored the main couple’s relationship difficulties without her role being included.

      2
      1

I didn’t like that aspect of the SFL either, but somehow I feel pity for her, for the ML, and for Do-hun. It would have been nice if, for whatever reason, she could confide about the whistling sounds she heard to the people who loved her, and they could have helped her with it. She could have had counselling to deal with the root cause of the issue, and avoided hurting others who loved her.

But I guess that is how life is sometimes. Some actions aren’t justified, but if we can learn to trust, to communicate, and to make peace with them afterwards. No matter how long it takes.

        2
        2

*but if we can learn to trust, to communicate, and to make peace with them afterwards, it’s good enough regardless of how long it takes.

          2
          0

Yes that’s it exactly. I guess my main frustration with K dramaland is the emphasis on love being the cure for trauma so in a show this great I was not expecting them to go down this route. It took up so much air time that the main couple story felt rushed emphasised by that end credits scene I was so disappointed with that.

Now, gentlebeanies, can I have your opinions on whether Tell Me You Love Me is good until the end? If so, I’ll go back to it since now I stopped at 11.

5
6

Yes, I feel it was able to maintain all that was good until the end. However, I felt they spent too long sorting out secondary characters’ arcs at the expense of the main couples story but others liked those storylines. I was so happy they showed the art class students and that the ending was not sad.

Honestly, it maintained it’s sweetness as @reply1998 said. Feel free to go back and complete it.

But if I am to warn you, prepare yourself for some heavy drama between the leads, you’ll already notice it cause it was a climatic buildup.

I can think of writing so many sarcastic posts on my fan wall just to express my enragement on what happened and what’s happening in SK re their artists and their distorted views of how things should be, but to save fellow Beans’ hearts I’d remain silent for the time being.

Dear M, don’t hold it in. This is a safe place for you to just let it all out. Don’t let yourself be overwhelmed by emotions, just let them flow out naturally.

This sarcastic comment came from a place of anger learning more about the whole situation (revelation of the note when it was begged not to, among others) and primarily the situation the deceased faced while being interrogated. I think the whole society should be trialed for what happened him and others.

May I say how upset I am at seeing all the tributes given to him at the SBS Awards? We know full well had he been alive, they would have shunned him totally and completely. They would have gone the extra mile to not show his face or mention his name, the same exact way it happened at Baeksang. I really hope his closest actor and director friends reached out to him in private if not in public, but I have my doubts.

      4
      1

Another big channel, KBS, dropped Kim Seon-ho at first sign of trouble from 2D1N some years ago. All his commercials and shows dropped him of all the projects for fear of public scrutiny. A couple years passed and they are now using his photos as thumbnails for their highlight 2D1N clips on their YT channel. I guess actors and actresses are just their commodities.

And you have the right to feel that way. There are really some very problematic aspects of SK society and media industry. Things that shouldn’t be glamorized are glamorized (eg excessive drinking, subordinates tolerating their superior’s abuse or children tolerating their parents’ abusive behaviors), and things that should be aren’t (eg, access to mental healthcare, being more rational about things such as seeking mental health, being able to accept and have compassion towards others including public figures, transparent and humane police investigation, sensible drug policies, and sensible internet culture). The aspect of their culture that listens to and acts according to the court of people is just plain wrong. It’s simply wrong.

Ajusshi, I’ve liked you since Coffee Prince. I hope you knew that. At least.

And you were beautiful when you were here. *cries*

CF is the show I rewatched most often. You, as a song writer with a complicated relationship with your beautiful girlfriend and your beautiful house on a hill overseeing the city. You have a big, furry dog, and the FL (lovely Yoon Eun-hye) would ride a bicycle delivering you milk almost everyday.

You impressed me again in Parasite. Goodness knows how charismatic you were in the role. You shot to stardom because you were so talented. You were so famous globally.

My Ajusshi, the show I thought was too depressing for my liking, is also a beloved of many people around the globe.

I don’t know what to say. I was very angry, now I’m so sad. The world have lost so many that would have made it a better place had they been still here…

I loved him in Coffee Prince and his lovely conversations with the FL. My Ajhusshi was a very hard watch but yes you have to see it with a very strong heart.

It’s hard not to like him in Coffee Prince for such a winning character. Yet, he has an eye for good projects as I haven’t seen him falter in any of his project choice. We continue to love him for all his roles even the very chauvinistic chef in Pasta. My Ajusshi is the pinnacle of all these which makes Parasite the icing on the cake – although it’s a fact that his range is much wider in all his movie roles.

The most heartbreaking thing is however he personally in real life didn’t get the opportunity he had in My Ajusshi to be able to turn a new leaf. It will take me some courage to rewatch this best of the best masterpiece but a must as a respect for him.

A fine actor, the most charismatic masculine voice. Gone too soon because some low lifes and unrealistic and idolized expectations of a repressed society. RIP, Lee Sun-kyun. You’ll be forever missed.

I’ll do something I don’t normally do. I’m extremely angry so I’ll list irritating thoughts I have about SK and its “culture”

    1. Toxic seniority: Doesn’t make sense how many times I see it displayed on screen. Superiors DONT have the right to physically (eg hitting their subordinates) and/or mentally, and/or emotionally harass their subordinates. This concept of seniority is skewed there. It’s unnatural and toxic. It’s just plain WRONG.

    2. Clean image: Do you even understand what image is? Image is image, you don’t need to protect your image because image is different from who you really are. What others perceive is different from who you are and your own worth. Many toxic Knetizens seem like they do t have a life, so they run their mouth commenting on K public figures’ image-related stuff when they in fact do nothing to improve their own or other people’s lives. Soul suckers. And yes, just suckers in general.

    3. Using drug vs selling drug: Using drug is a sign for help. It isn’t a SIN. They don’t HARM other people but themselves. For F***’s sake, really, how can a society be so skewed as thinking this is a sin??? What they teach in school then? Just how to bully other people? Gosh, the future of education there looks worrisome if they somehow end up making people think that using drug is a crime. Just a failure for the society to not be able to view things objectively and with a humanely kind heart and compassion.

    4. Divorce: What is wrong with divorce??? When two people are not happy with one another anymore, they can mutually agree to part ways and that’s called divorce. Is one isn’t happy with how one is treated in a marriage, isn’t it STUPID if one continues to stay in the marriage hoping for an impossible thing such as the situation will get better? One throws their agency out of the window, then. And to view that divorced women is worth less than unmarried women is just misogynistic. Men there can as well buy dolls. (Sorry not sorry)

    5. School bullying: It should be stopped at schools. It’s the teachers’ job. You don’t know how boring it is to watch these scenes being played again and again in different shows, it’s disgusting. If teachers can’t put a stop to these bullying acts of their students, they should just resign and let others who can to come and take care of the job. It isn’t something that should
Be normalized by showing it again and again without addressing it as something that can be avoided and FIXED by teachers or some adult figures. Instead of we have a best hit named The Glory. And can anyone tell me what is GLORIOUS about that show? I believed there is none except superficial things (which I love) that are clothes and production design (perhaps).

And while it seems to be true to a certain extent that hurt people, hurt peopl, it’s also equally true that hurt people may CHOOSE to be kind to others because they know how hurtful it is to be hurt.

An angry person expresses their thoughts harshly, so I hope it can be understood. I understand and fully respect SK as a nation of wonderful things, but these things trouble me as some things that are toxic. SK is a talented nation: Competitive, so I’m sure that if they want to, they CAN change. So here’s hoping for the country to take a more positive and balanced turn for the better (if they agree, and if they wish). There are good and not-so-good people everywhere, and my comments took that fact into consideration. It’s just that if any institution can’t protect the good and the should-be-kept and protect, it’s unlikely to grow well sustainably.

I pointed these things about because of the sad news, and because I like Kdramas in general (even though I think they are heading for a more violent turn, the decision I don’t understand).

Thank you for expressing yourself like this. We do hope and pray for a better world where we can feel safe, loved and respected as a human being and not always judged on shallow, superficial grounds.

Show the faces of the two who extorted money from LSK, so the world knows animals in human flesh.

But this isn’t fair for animals. Animals don’t extort money, they live their good life.

    Low lifes then.

@db-staff Can we do something to support K actors/ actresses that we all love cos they bring joy to us? I don’t wanna see something like this anymore. Let them know that SK isn’t the whole world.

Or else I might end up not watching Kdramas one day, knowing that the hell of the industry and the society these beloved actors and anctresses are working in.

Tell Me That You Love Me ep9, is it possible to have sensible parents in Kdramas? This is against the norm!! 😌

It has been a difficult year for me this past year, but engaging with Beans and being here regularly made it bearable. I loved how fun you guys interacted, so even when I didn’t watch many dramas, I still felt a sense of belonging and joy and fun watching others have fun meming or commenting on their favorites and not-so-favorite shows.

Cheers to you all, Merry Christmas for those who celebrate, and have a good and peaceful new year everyone.

Hugs to y’all from M and her BB Kim Seon-ho

Hi Lapis and yes! lol our MLL fan-girling was so much fun for me, too! It’s a bit sad (but understandable) why the show wasn’t more popular, but the OTP is one of the best! And thanks to you, too, for your top tier meme game and for being here with us (and me :P)

Not sure about K ratings, but on IMDB this show already has 9.3/10. That really reflects the quality of its first 8 eps.
