    Okay, questions:

    1. Can somebody please explain to me why Solo wanted to leave the team 10 years ago?
    2. Did anybody else read the novel yet?

    1
    2

More shocking thing for me was Solo had a baby with Gun’s manager 😮 But Gun’s manager is married to Gun’s friend in Norway. 😦Solo and Applelady (forgot her name) are I guess not together anymore??? 😱

This is one messed up relationship. If I were to see the relationship chart of this drama, it would be a cobweb for sure.

      3
      1

Oh! Xiao Bai is crushing on Applelady…………….

Gun is in the middle of all these relationship. Just hoping he isn’t tangled with any of these. And that his first love is actually uri cute Squid. ☺️

From what I understand, Solo cheated on Appledog with Gun’s now colleague in K&K and they had a child. So I’m thinking Solo left the team for better opportunities because he now had a child to look after. And Appledog left the team because of the betrayal. The team broke because they both left and Gun felt there was no point in competing and staying without the team so he retired. Then Solo formed SP and gathered all Team Solo apart from Gun who already formed K&K. So Gun is upset on his old team because the other two, All and Xiao Mi, still went with Solo and Appledog when they were the ones who broke up the team in the first place. The novel doesn’t explain the backstories at all. This is what I got from watching the episodes.

      1
      2

Yeah, it was all very confusing to me because when Gun announced that he was retiring, it seemed like Team Solo was still together because everyone seemed shocked and mad even of his decision (when if in fact Solo and Appledog were gonna leave the team, everyone should be more understanding??). I was hoping that the novel would better explain things, but it really didn’t.

        1
        1

That was confusing. Like why does it seem like Gun’s fault when everyone knows it isn’t? Maybe what they’re really upset about was his retirement? Makes no sense, show, but carry on. Haha

          1
          0

Ok, if this is the case, then nobody should be pissed at Gun, nobody. And in the drama, when All and Xiao Mi are hanging out, they made it seem like it should be so easy to sweep everything under the rug. Why? Because competing is more/so important that you should let bygones me bygones. Everyone is selfish. Everyone is self-centered.

        0
        2

Exactly. But I think they’re upset at Gun because everyone in Team Solo have reconciled except him? Even Appledog forgave Solo for what he did. But Gun is still holding on to his grudges instead of talking it out with the team and letting go. Not Gun’s fault really because everyone has their own time and way in forgiving people and they should be allowed that. Time heals all wounds as they say and Team Solo will reconcile sooner or later.

Well there was that one scene where All expressed he was more disappointed and mad at Gun for retiring because he was the hero that everyone looked up too so it was like the entire industry losing its foothold/reason for existence…which I can understand. What I don’t understand is how they could so easily forgive Solo and Appledog. And moreover, not extend that same understanding to Gun. Smh. Shitty friends tbh.

🙋‍♀️ Reporting for duty! Haha I wasn’t expecting to be this infatuated with this drama. I read the novel and found it just okay, a little smutty even. The adaptation has been great so far. There are some things that are off but more things I really like.

      It’s a smutty novel?!! I love smutty novels!😂

Tbh I’m not too attracted with the plot but I’m watching all episodes without fast forwarding. I struggled hard to finish ep 2. I Finally finished it last night and next thing I knew I’m currently at ep 12! 😅😅 this drama is addicting even tho I’m not gushing over the plot.

Here’s the link to Mo Bao Fei Bao’s books, just look for Stewed Squid with Honey: https://hui3r.wordpress.com/mo-bao-fei-bao/ I don’t think they’ll film the novel as is because of the scenes in the novel. LOL But they’re already heading towards that territory when Nian Nian rummaged Gun’s pocket for his keys. Hahaha

        2

did you read the go go squid novel and the other stories in this universe? i only read Squid because of this drama. and im uncomfortable by the age gap in the novel. lol. especially the very intimate part of the novel.
is the age gap in the drama different than the book??

      1
      2

I haven’t read the novel but think in the drama it is like 10 years?

        1
        1

so same then. they have a 10 year age gap in the novel too! im okay with big age gap, but still cant help exclaiming from to time, “dude, she’s 19!” lol

          1
          2

Yeah, the age gap really bothered me. At first in the drama it didn’t bother me so much (in part because I know they look to be similar age and I thought she was in her 20s as she’s a grad student but then they had to make her into a child prodigy. but then for some reason in the novel, the 10 year age gap became more apparent to the point it really bothered me. Well, it’s not even the age gap that bothers me, but the infantilizing of Squid and Gun’s attraction to her just came across as slightly child pornographic.

            2
            0

@myriver the drama doesn’t really emphasize much their age gap, so I didn’t think it was a big deal. But the novel did and that’s when their age gap started to bother me. Especially he keeps referring to Squid as “kid”. In his mind she’s the kid he’s very much into.

            1
            0

I only read Squid and yes, still same 10-year gap. Gun is almost 30, so 29 and Squidie is 19.

        2
        1

Oooooh, see that’s a very salient point. I’m generally super-sensitive about age-gaps, particularly if one of the OTP is a teenager (I dropped Gobelin because of it) but it didn’t bother me this time. Maybe because I’m identifying with Squidie in a weird way. I also started university when I was 15 and also, errr….. well, maybe fell for an older gentleman when I was 20 (kinda at first sight too) so I’m weirdly ok with it. That said, I totally agree with everything beanies have said and had I not had a “Oh wait, I did that when I was her age” reaction to this specific story, I would probably have raised an eyebrow or two as well.

The age gap didn’t bother me because she was a post-grad student which basically means she can go and find work if she wants to and be at equal footing with Gun. I’m really confused with Korean high school where they are in senior year at 19 or 20 instead of 17 and 18 like the rest of the world.

            0
            0

Yeah I can totally see things from Squids perspective and don’t have any issues with her crushing hard on Gun. I just didn’t feel like the writer gave Gun a compelling reason to love her other than lust (and her clinging to him). In the novel that’s how I felt anyway. And yes, that’s a perfectly realistic and common reason to like someone, I just wish it wasn’t in the context of a large age gap, clueless/naive girl and accomplished man.

            2
            0

I agree. I also have an issue with what Gun said, that when you’re together, feelings are bound to follow. That’s not really true. You can be with someone for a long time and not develop romantic feelings at all.

With Gun, you kind of have to force him into relationships, no? Haha That way, he can go along and then finally realize, ah, this kid isn’t so bad. Oh, I kind of like her. I just finished Episode 14, I’m like, you spent approximately $138,000 on a girl only for her to break up with you? Go get the girl back at least!

Yeah, honestly I don’t know why I’m watching this drama because the narrative isn’t all there and some of the developments just plain don’t make sense, etc. Well I do know why I’m still watching – for Li Xian lol even though his acting You Xian (“is limited” in Chinese) haha.

Agreed. Like the breakup. That breakup didn’t make any sense. It annoyed me more than anything. I FF though most of that ep.

It’s Tong Nian’s first relationship and she was so embarrassed for getting drunk that she wants to cut-off the pretend relationship because she thought she inconvenienced Gun a lot. (Reading that back, it seems I’m just making things up for the drama to make sense because I like it too much. Hahaha) I’m glad they did break-up because then they can just start a real relationship. It was weird reading it in the novel but all I care about is them together so I let it be and just read on. So I’ll just watch on…

And to know that it was her drunken behavior that “awoken” Gun to his feelings huhuhu, I just can’t…it’s too much for me to handle!

I haven’t watched the drunk scene yet, I’m curious to know exactly she did and if it was in fact so burdensome to warrant her offering to breakup. I agree with @zetteceniza tho that it was just a mechanism we didn’t to get thru so they can be together for real. Sigh.

The break up made sense to me. I think she felt he was just letting he …save face I guess. After that dinner were no one believed her and then letting her choose the break up day. I’m sure in the back of her mind she was worried about annoying.
And he needed it to realize he really likes her. It was cute how he let her into his life but never realized what that might mean.

I get where you guys are coming from, but it was more that she was running away from something that wasn’t that egregious that annoyed me. We do stupid things when drunk. It’s hard to face it, but come on.

is the youtube episodes subbed?? or where do you watch the subbed eps?

      2

Unfortunately they are not. I’ve just been watching them raw (I do understand Chinese…for the most part) so I’m sure I’m missing some of the nuances and jokes but I get the general gist. But the comments are like “director, can you please stop with the memories. We hate them. We just want our OTP” or “as humans, we must look forward and not back at our last, no?” Or “…I’ve been ensnared by these two…”

Briian, it’s subbed on viki! And they’re pretty much caught up with subs too. Ep 15 and 16 are almost done.

I’m not sure if it was discussed already but Solo is the jackiest of asses. I appreciated that he was direct and honest with Little Mi about his performance instead of blindsiding him later. But did this jerk need to have that conversation on his birthday, and in front of All. He is a total ass.

Finally saw this scene. Yeah, I agree, I don’t know why he had to share it in front of All. I guess it decided to tell Xiao Mi on his bday because it was a perfect excuse for it to just be them without Appledog, though when I think about it, I’m not sure why she couldn’t be there for the conversation but All had to. But otherwise, I am squeeing so much from this episode, I died when Gun asked Grunt how to give women a sense of security.

My apologies my beautiful squiddies. I just started a new job and I have been swamped. As a result I am only on episode 19 >.< But I have been watching some previews of future episodes and adorbs! And seriously, how can anyone be as beautiful as Li Xian and his hands, he has beautiful hands. And his nose bridge. While generally I don't care about the height of one's nose bridge, I nonetheless appreciate his prominent brow bone.

On my drive to work today, I was wondering if anyone, like me, took a reaction time test when they talked about it earlier in the series? I don't know if I am slower than average (well actually yes, according to the data given on the website, I am slower than average – but I blame it on my computer ;)) or if the show has set unrealistic expectations on human reaction time. I didn't try too many times, but my fastest time is 278 ms. Here's the test for anyone who's interested: https://www.humanbenchmark.com/tests/reactiontime.
