@yyishere I finished the book: it ends with us! (With a bit too many tears) but the twists did not shock me more than it did when it happened in my life T_T.
The book is a cross between a typical romance novel with a serious slice of life non fiction novel and it does not blend well for me. The letters are amazingly well written and heartbreaking. I wanted more of the other boy a lot more and a lot more. The most devastating conversation was with the mother and the most unmoving one was with the male lead in the hospital because I have heard a way worse one! But still it is a decent novel and I may recommend it to my friend who just doesn’t understand this topic and totally engages in victim shaming T_T!
Yes, she writes so well… I loved totally the letters and cried so much after reading them, so god, my head still hurts, I recommended it to my friend. Thank you recommending it to me :).
I thought the way she wrote it was amazing. Staring it as a serious romance novel just totally suckers you in, and then the moment comes when it all changes. I felt it was a deliberate choice and one that did work for me.

I had to stop reading one book about a girl who was badly scarred in an apartment fire, and the boy who fell in love with her, because I couldn’t bear to read it anymore…she was a beautiful teen star, and the fire destroyed her looks and her career…and guess what, I just knew it, in the last part, guess who started the fire…the boy…I knew it…how on earth does someone write something so brutal…the only other book that I read that I loved was Ugly Love. It was funny in parts, but of course, there has to be a catch. But it was very, very good. Read this one, guys. I love Miles, the guy…he’s beautifully portrayed. But avoid the other book…November 9…urgh.
So now I’m obsessed with Ruth Ware’s books. It seems she’s the new Agatha Christie. She is so, so good. I started with The Turn of the Key. Absolutely brilliant and mindboggling. I stopped many times to try to figure out what’s happening. It’s written in the first person narrative. This girl answers an ad for a nanny and travels all the way to Scotland to apply for the job. The family who ran the ad live a creepy mansion that creaks in the night….creepppyyyyy. Twist upon twist upon twist. Chilling and haunting. I felt very cold when I finished reading it. Then I continued with The Death of Mrs. Westaway. Pretty good, too. Read The Lying Game, and I kind of guessed the twist halfway…it was pretty obvious, but the ending was still a shocker. Just started with The Woman in Cabin 10…I’m kind of afraid to continue, because you can’t put down her books once you start they’re so gripping. But I think The Turn of the Key is still my fav so far…super creepy.

I rate the novel 3/5 on average the opening gets 1/5: I almost wanted my money back for it being a typical romance but read imagining the female lead to be an errand boy girl and all her actions being opposite. It was hilarious.
Then the dairy entries start and It had my full attention
I give 5/5 for the female lead and second lead and dairy and talking about violence and confusion. The state of confused mind is horrible but the first reaction to such a thing happening to you. I was thankful that the female lead forgave herself for being in the same situation like her mom and she understood that it was not her fault and also not her mom’s. Her mom was even more alone and I don’t know if she grew up in an abusive household. If not, I get that she would be even more confused and had no one to talk and share with.

Well to me it was clear the moment he got on his knees in the first few pages to beg for sex, what he was going to turn out into really. I could say I had seen the violence coming from very early pages, not because of the chair but because how he was manipulating her almost.
This behavior really shows someone who knows no boundaries and can resort to anything to get what they want and how they want it, no one ever told them no. I was sort of ready for it, I did not want to, but life taught me other wise, if a man gets on his knees to beg, run for your life, complete opposite of what romantic novels stand for. The biggest red flag ever.
This is how I think every romance novel ends in real life, the female lead becomes a part of the statistic.
Yeah. Because we are physically weaker. I know of abusive relationships in RL. Guy says sorry, Girl keeps making excuses. It’s exactly like the book. But I loved the sweetness of the flash backs, that young boy who tried his best to protect her. And the part where he told her he went to that empty house to kill himself, it broke my heart. I ‘ve switched to thrillers now. Creeping myself out with Ruth Ware’s books. Soooo creepyyy.
Oh Nice, I am a Scandinavian crime fiction buff, I dig them. I also read huge amount of crime and watch crime shows, till I am almost not shocked by anything. I am now trying to diversify my reading to non-fiction and slice of life. I recently read educated by Tara Westover, highly recommended, if you haven’t read it already and vegetarian by Han Kang, this was a brilliant book. And now I am reading Asymmetry and Celestial bodies. And next on my to read list is human acts by Han Kang. I finished “it ends with us” in 7 hours straight. It was that addicting, lol.
For me, the book probably had more impact because I had no idea what I was going to read about when I opened it. If I’d known from the start what the theme was, I prob would have guessed. But, because I purely got it out of the library because YY recommended it, I had no idea what was coming and was taken by surprise. It doesn’t happen all that often.
Also, can I add how much I liked that she ended up with the SL?
And yeah, for those beginning 60 or so pages, I was wondering why I was reading this book. Totally got taken in by the tone.

Like OFG says, there’s a scene early on in which the main character finds a diary and flips through it. The first few pages had the Hindi script on it, and it then became Korean. So we wondered about the origins of the original owner of the diary. I dropped the show so I didn’t know they’ve revealed his origin. He’s Pakistani. No wonder the script is familiar. I didn’t try to read it, but OFG did – OFG, it must be urdu words then, not hindi? (wapz – same alphabet, in case you’re from another part of the world)

On the other hand idk if the Koreans got it right lol, I’ve never met a Pakistani who knows how to read and write in Hindi, maybe Pakistani Hindus in Sindh do but obviously if that much information was revealed about him. Hehe no problem. I can see how it may sound out of context, given the fact that I am Indian and India-Pakistan don’t get along. I think the Koreans didn’t get it entirely wrong – OFG read it. It apparently reads like something from a Bollywood movie, about a lovesick guy.
I was wondering the same, the name of the guy is not a usual Hindu name. For example the following guy is the only guy on earth which turns up for this name. (Also they forgot the surname, being happy that the name had three syllable unit, so Korean) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumail_Nanjiani
But here is some interesting thing: the guy above also has the same name and is from Sindh. Just that he did not grow up in Hindu family but then maybe he picked it up from TV and friends. I doubt that this language would be taught in schools since its not an official one.

Also when the lead girl talks about wanting to get a roof top apartment, with that rich guy in the opening pages, I almost died laughing! It was not supposed to be funny but it was so funny, in a certain context and world.

#Makjang monday
So, here is my entry to it, umm maybe since I read a lot last week and also this monday, some which I found really interesting some I disagreed a lot with (I am sorry for that), this one is just meta in its nature: Room without Windows : The makjang in your brain
Prologue:
08.09: You have packed your bags and there is still some time to catch your plane to your Room without windows.
You check dramabeans.
You find out about makjang mondays.
You sign up and post an advert even.
09.09: Dramabeans notifications: You have been mentioned…
You read all entries on makjang monday.
You are totally confused.
You check back the original notice and you read for the first time that makjang was supposed to happen in your real life
You blank out completely.
You had originally decided to make a full makjang story and had planned it carefully with so many unique new makjang plots
but you enrolled in a wrong competition and already are at the track so you may as well write something for it.
Main story:
08.09: You take your flight, planning your makjang story in the head and hoping your room is not underground in a dark alley.
You reach the airport and wait for immigration in the longest line because you are a candy. You smile sheepisly at the immigration guy, while telling why you are here in this new country
And then the immigration guy say in his very correct english accent like the guy below:
(*if you have not heard this guy’s voice, please do, you are welcome)
You walk past the gates and the strap of your hand bag breaks
You should look like a pissed off cat but you are still smiling like that sheep up there because you loved this guy’s voice. And you just pick up your bag and walk like a fabulous lama, happy
You stay over night with a friend and things are okay, you are still planning on your makjang story and now you are dead excited about seeing your room and finish your makjang plot planning.
09.09: You get ready and take the early morning train to your Room without window. You reach the new city and its raining! You reach your room. It is underground, you are disappointed, but anyways you make no effort to do anything about the situation, you have to have a real life experience to make your real life makjang story. You go out and go your business stuff.
09.09 night: You are back to your room without window, it is smaller than the room in Hell is others and the wash room could not be smaller, I can bet on my life, you can’t make it smaller! It is bigger in even areoplanes but whatever! Then you sleep, in two hours you hear people shouting in your hallway, you do nothing but imagine everything that could be happening: from just drunk people shouting, to people fighting, to it being a shady hotel to your neighbors high on drugs to people trying to make sure you just get out to look, but you don’t because you don’t care this much about reality! (It was only two men shouting, so you are never for your own sanity or safety get out of your bed).
10.09: Next morning you check there were CCTV in hallways, you are not super sure if they work but you hear noise again of the same two guy and figure out it is your next door neighbor, and they are still doing whatever they were the last night and are still alive and you go on with your hotel trip.
10.09 night: You get yourself a can of Fanta and as soon as you open it you realise you have just introduced more Carbon dioxide in your room without window! Not a great realization to have at 1 pm in night!
11.09 night: Now there are two girls in the room next to your and you hear more voices, of water running in shower and then you hear laughter and some ahah aaaa sounds, okay, now you trust imagination and you put on some music you have an important meeting and n time to plan your makjang happening in the room next wall!
12.04: Your last night in the room without window. You actually had left the can opened without drinking the fanta and increase your room’s CO2 level, other than you having a mild headache nothing much was achieved. You pack your suitcase and you go to sleep. There was a storm passing in the night you hear nothing in your room without window!
11.09: You go to your friends back home ask them to let you sleep on a sofa with windows open, you deserve all the air.
Heh. The makjang in your brain. Sadly, this is something I can relate to all too well. Put me in a new situation with unexpected things happening, and my brain would conjure up several worst possible scenarios all at once. I swear it’s genetic. My mom once turned a snippet of overheard conversation into a full-length twisty story.
Haha! Yes, totally me and my dad are very good at this, we can almost guess all the twists in TV shows mom would be watching and she would be like no, it can’t be that bad!

I think she’ll level up soon if she comments on articles and recaps a few times. I was mostly on the fan wall but managed anyway. I say she’ll level up at 11,000 upvotes, but sooner if she just comments 10-20 times on articles and recaps.
I also think so! I am thinking of doing this experiment for my errand boy level, commenting a lot on recaps, I hope I will be watching more shows soon and they are going to be recapped.
i feel like this is a slow process of elimination….like now we know it’s a lot more than likes, frequency, and the fan wall. they wrote some kind of crazy nuclear-codes algorithm for sure!
in my nerdiest heart of heart, this is my conclusion: the ticket is to post frequent, original comments on articles. not just replies to other’s comments, but your own reply. and to have those comments generate some discussion, which means that they probably need to be towards the top of the thread…just because beanies tend to interact with earlier comments more. i think than fanwall posts add something, follows and likes add something, but the comments seem to bear the most weight to me. (i know i am taking this waaaaay too seriously—that’s my charm yall lololol —- but my other option was to spend my time fretting over why my three year old wont potty train and wonder when daycare will kick him out because of it :P)
Lol! The struggle is real with potty training! Sometimes it helps just going cold turkey. No pull ups, no underwear, no pants for a day or two over a weekend. House arrest and clean up after him when he has accidents. He’ll figure it out.
Second the cold turkey approach. It’s brutal in the moment, but can be highly effective. I also was not opposed to blatant bribery and rewards. Good luck!
This economist thought he could train his toddler using the reward method. A candy each time she went potty instead of the diaper. It worked for three whole days. Then this toddler who had no control previously, learned to go potty a few dribbles at a time, asking for a candy reward for each dribble. I was impressed – by the toddler.
@hebang, one must try to stay smarter than the toddler. This is difficult. I found more long term, but easily understood, goals were the ticket. And gradually increasing the goal line along the way. The rewards also needed to be tailored to each child. For instance one was a sucker for new clothing items or a toy, whereas, another responded to cold hard cash. Interestingly, these reward preferences still hold true for them as young adults, though I no longer reward their potty habits.
@ally-le@egads@hebang thanks you guys <3 i know a little about this cold turkey approach– a few people have recommended it to me — and at this point i think im willing to try it. nothing else has worked. we are unabashedly bribing him, and that sometimes works, but i think maybe we need pantless+bribes now. le sigh
Just going to throw in my two cents: I feel like commenting on articles can’t be that important because I almost never comment on articles. I mostly just post on my fanwall and comment on other’s posts and I still managed to level up to Entertainer in Training 🤷♀️
Compare my stats and raonah’s and you’ll see the difference in posting on articles—which is where I usually post. And yes, her stats are much greater than mine.
Do you remember when you leveled up? For me it was June 19th and at the time I had 13,463 comments and 34,049 likes. Maybe that will help us see if article comments are weighted more heavily than fanwall posts.
It seems like article comments are more important than fanwall posts then. I noticed you also follow/are followed by about 50 more people than I am. I wonder if that has an effect too 🤔
And yet it’s the only explanation for why Paka is higher than me that I can find? Also I notice I tend to level up consistently if my activity there and in gener is high.
What I’d like to do, cos I do have the stats for this now, is track how many comments Paka and I commented on recaps between fan club president and unemployed slacker, and maybe even work out a rough rate of posting. However, I still have no way to access our comments on other people’s walls.
Aside from the recent flurry of Errand Boy Girl mass lunacy activity on @yyishere‘s fan wall (which for me has been absolutely massive) and a few other occasions, I post fan wall comments comparatively rarely. I didn’t even know how to do it for a long time. In the recap threads, discussion of the recently-premiered part 3 of ARTHDAL CHRONICLES has also been brisk.

I have not been posting much in 2019 until recently as many of the shows I’ve been watching have not been recapped, and
(1) thus had no fixed officially-designated places to discuss them (JOSEON SURVIVAL; LOVE AFFAIRS IN THE AFTERNOON; Cdrama BEFORE WE GET MARRIED). In lieu of an official recap thread, I prefer to discuss in What We’re Watching rather than Open Thread, but I still end up in OT anyway;
or, (2) shows were eventually wee-capped, but the lag time was too great for me to strike while the iron was hot while I still recalled what I had seen due to watching other shows;
(3) I couldn’t comment in a timely fashion to participate in active discussions (although I usually don’t care, and post anyway);
(4) I’ve been watching far fewer dramas this year than in 2018 (when I set a personal record of 39 live-watches, IIRC, in addition to older shows and movies);
My viewing has decreased in 2019 because:
(A) I’ve become pickier about starting to watch dramas after quite a few shows ended unsatisfactorily in 2018;
(B) I’ve been under the weather and resting more;
(C) Some of the shows I’ve been watching have left me wrung out (even in a good way, such as HAECHI and NOKDU FLOWER), or frustrated / let down / cranky (CROWNED CLOWN, ABSOLUTE BOYFRIEND, ANGEL’S LAST MISSION: LOVE; and JOSEON SURVIVAL – whose subtitles were summarily discontinued after a cast change);
(D) NOKDU FLOWER had been recapped in the beginning, but was discontinued. Alas, it premiered before HAECHI ended, so I couldn’t pay as much attention or comment early on. I got overwhelmed with my voluminous background research, and gave up trying to organize and post it. The subject matter of the show was mentally and emotionally draining at times, while the production and performances were absolutely topnotch;
(E) KINGDOM and ARTHDAL CHRONICLES premiered while I was already avidly watching other shows, and I couldn’t focus on them as well as I would have liked. Both have aired partial seasons, which has been distracting. Since the return of ARTHDAL, I’m again posting essays;
(F) I haven’t been commenting on LET ME HEAR YOUR SONG in its wee-caps. Today at long last I posted my Rampant Speculations (TM) in the eps. 21-24 thread.
I’m afraid I can’t be of much help. These are all the statistics I have, which ain’t much. I was clueless about levels and didn’t pay any attention to them for the longest time. I had no idea what a “Jang Geu Rae” was because I started out watching sageuks. A light shone in Marblehead when I finally watched MISAENG. LOL!

If I remember correctly you leveled up to FCP at the beginning of the year and I was about two months? later. Same happened with UESIST- you levelled up in June ish and I levelled up at the end of August. I’ve been taking about 7-8 months to level up in these higher levels for the past several levels, so you may not think you’re active but you’re still ahead of me lol

It occurs to me that one of the stats that is not listed is # of Thumbs-Up Bestowed. I’m heavy-handed in my bestowal as I like to encourage discussion.
I wonder if character count comes into play, because I often post full-blown essays, and then engage in similar discussions with other Beanies — which then go off on tangents. If we’re lucky, we somehow manage to relate the whole shebang back to the original topic, or at least Kdramas in general.
I periodically go on music-posting binges on my fan wall. Sometimes they feature BGM from a particular drama, other times, I just get a yen to listen to vintage music and end up posting a virtual free-form playlist that has zilch to do with Kdrama.
Yes @pakalanapikake your word/character count has come to mind to me before hehehe. However given my 20k comment count and amount of times I’ve uhm broken the fanwall, I think we might be even there. But there’s no way to tell.
@sicarius does paka post more links on her fanwall than you? My levels are a lot lower of course (I am not worthy 😉 ), but I do remember at one point feeling like i was levelling up quicker when i started including gifs on my fanwall posts.

No no this is a solid theory for what kinds of comments add more to it. And could be right.
The reason I take so much notice of this in particular is that it may explain what @pakalanapikake does that I don’t on recap threads that means she levels up higher, despite me having thrice the normal stats of most beanies.
If I don’t know what to say to someone on my original comment I tend to just post a random reply and move on rather than engaging in discussion. So good theory!
I’ve actually posted less on recap threads since the advent of the new site. It’s much harder for me to keep track of long discussions now than before, when posts used to be numbered.
Of course, the other reason is that I hardly watch dramas that are recapped anymore.

Let me tell you what I am searching for in Indian books: Sometimes I feel I know everything about and sometimes I fell I know nothing about life in India. So I wanted to discover life of people in this country, to understand them much better but at the same time, when I see most of the books, they are not deep, they don\’t explore what I want to know (not that I know what I am really looking for in this country) but still. Most of the stories are from long ago, we have a strange ability to be stuck in past or mythology or have an even strange ability to talk about things from the most extreme point of view of a sex-worker (I am not going to debate on their status or why such books are necessary and should be read or why I had enough of them), or we just talk about the strange middle class\’s obsession with money, I think I know all that there is to know about such an Indian family, they are almost totally same in their behavior across all the demographics of the country.
I think I am looking for some form of exploration of the concept of individuality or a lack of thereof in this country. More like what these people think or don\’t at all. This I expect to be very different across different various regions, even though oppressive and corrupt environment and balant sexism has such a strong uniting bond in this country.
Language: I can read in Hindi but for other languages I would need a translation.
Also, I don’t like this language at all, which makes a big part of my complicated relationship with the country!
Also, the amount of armed conflicts that keep on happening in this country which I have never heard people talking about or writing books on, maybe its just me who does not know.
So maybe a bit more on non-fiction but not from those absurd news report authors, they make everything into a fiction. More from some body who lives there and writes a memoir of their life, minus the judgement.

Life here is mundane but to live here is not so bad. In looking for an exploration of the concept of individuality and searching for a discussion of armed conflict, you may be looking at the country through the eyes of a “westerner”. Yes to the environment being oppressive and blatantly sexist, but the sense of community isn’t always an oppressive and sexist thing. Also, I suppose you’re not reading the right books? Not all books will cover these kids of topics obviously – and they shouldn’t, there is life here that does not struggle with armed conflict (like mine) – but you’ll find plenty that will.

Yes and no, to what you say, the country I lived in and still come back to is a very different from what I write, I have been made so by the people who lived with me, they were/are not perfect and they were/are not sexist at all. I have fond memories and bad memories as well of the country, that is why I am looking for books which tell me a very different India from what I know. If there is any. Some self reflectory and some how talking about philosophy which makes us. Oppressive and corrupt I say because it is a lot corrupt but for oppressive I meant the caste divide and dosmetic abuse and violence in general, which for me is still some thing I was a lot protected from while growing up so I have no knowledge. Also I find it hard to find such stories because I don’t know what is authentic and also the people who experience it are not all literate a lot as well. So they who tells their stories?

Your and mine life are somehow the people who have a very protected life and without armed conflict and I know mostly how it is.
I will be more able to appreciate it if I know the spectrum of life in this country.
About individuality is something I want to explore in my culture, my mom is even more so than I am and she has not lived in a European country, but was raised in the wilderness of a dacoit village and she is a professor. We have this individuality a lot in us so I wanted books which talks about men and women and how does which culture influence such things. Sexism and class divide oppression is something that unites the whole world even, so nothing special about India.
You make sense. 🙂 And sadhana covered book suggestions. I normally read non fiction, stuff like “Environmental jurisprudence and the Supreme Court” and I don’t think that’s what you’re looking for.
I did mean eyes of a “westerner” in the way that @minminfan says it. The lens from which you’re judging your reading offers no answers, but in fact, all books about everyday life/ordinary protagonists will explore will these ideas. It may not be “overt” perhaps but I actually tend to dislike authors like Arundhati Roy or Amitav Ghosh for sometimes excessively going into these concepts.
The caste divide and dosmetic abuse and violence hmmm…I recently read a book called “Democracy on the Road” wherein the author, an elections junkie, chronicles over 25 years of elections in India, that he covered as a journalist. It’s not an academic book, just a chronicle. He talks extensively of the caste system and how it affects votes. It’s a fun and insightful read.
Oh I read non fiction as well.
I can do well with books which do not offer any answers. I am a researcher that for me is the most natural situation to end up in. I love academic exposition unless they write in a very obscure way. Arundhati Roy I have only partially read when I was very young, so maybe I should try again to finally decide I don’t like :). India is so vast and varied that literally every single thing you think about India (even if they’re contradictory) will be true of at least some part of India. We have some of the poorest and richest people, and some of the most progressive-thinking as well as the most retrogressive-thinking (as typified by our current govt) co-existing here.
In novels exploring the Indian psyche, even in the ones that you feel are overdone or “stuck in the past”, you have to read between the lines to get at what the authors mean. All the novels that talk about family in India tackle, at some level, the concept of individuality that you speak of. Who gets to be an individual? Who doesn’t? At what cost does that come? You will see questions of borders and what makes home, in Amitav Ghosh’s Shadow Lines. You will see how women constantly subvert all that you speak of, and challenge their environment in their own way in the works of many women writers – Shashi Deshpande for example. You will see the glitz and glamour of the “high-society” folks in a book that was mentioned on the other thread – The Windfall. I don’t think we’d have books that explicitly say “this is the only thing this is going to be about.”
If you’re talking about the conflicts in Kashmir, in the heartlands in the jungles, or in the North-east – there are plenty of books that do so.
Also, saying “absurd news report authors” is a little harsh. There are journalists who spend their lives immersed in the conflicts or issues they are reporting on, and do so with great credibility and care. A famous example being P. Sainath’s Everybody Loves a Good Drought. (Highly recommend this book.) Sujatha Gidla’s Ants Among Elephants might be something you like. But even memoirs come with a lens of judgement. Every piece of writing does.
Just a suggestion – before you delve into books, perhaps read up on what’s happening in various parts and demographies of the country? There are excellent sites (in my opinion) like Scroll, The Wire, Newslaundry, The Newsminute, Down to Earth that cover a spectrum of issues. This might give you a better idea on how to interpret the various things you read in books, whether they’re using “judgement” as you put it, or if they’re being fair.

Everybody Loves a Good Drought. I have read this one and sadly some how I knew everything that the book said from real life, I did expect things to happen like that and they did. That is why I said that I know this country too well, that I want to explore it from points I don’t know, now I think I will make an argument circular.

I finished Forest of Secret! Yay!! Finally! it was a very good show, I will rate it 9.5/10. (0.5 deducted because I could guess all the twists in second half, other than 07 being a tattoo DJ on Mr. Yoon, which is why I only deduct 0.5)

The book is a cross between a typical romance novel with a serious slice of life non fiction novel and it does not blend well for me. The letters are amazingly well written and heartbreaking. I wanted more of the other boy a lot more and a lot more. The most devastating conversation was with the mother and the most unmoving one was with the male lead in the hospital because I have heard a way worse one! But still it is a decent novel and I may recommend it to my friend who just doesn’t understand this topic and totally engages in victim shaming T_T!

I thought the way she wrote it was amazing. Staring it as a serious romance novel just totally suckers you in, and then the moment comes when it all changes. I felt it was a deliberate choice and one that did work for me.

I had to stop reading one book about a girl who was badly scarred in an apartment fire, and the boy who fell in love with her, because I couldn’t bear to read it anymore…she was a beautiful teen star, and the fire destroyed her looks and her career…and guess what, I just knew it, in the last part, guess who started the fire…the boy…I knew it…how on earth does someone write something so brutal…the only other book that I read that I loved was Ugly Love. It was funny in parts, but of course, there has to be a catch. But it was very, very good. Read this one, guys. I love Miles, the guy…he’s beautifully portrayed. But avoid the other book…November 9…urgh.
So now I’m obsessed with Ruth Ware’s books. It seems she’s the new Agatha Christie. She is so, so good. I started with The Turn of the Key. Absolutely brilliant and mindboggling. I stopped many times to try to figure out what’s happening. It’s written in the first person narrative. This girl answers an ad for a nanny and travels all the way to Scotland to apply for the job. The family who ran the ad live a creepy mansion that creaks in the night….creepppyyyyy. Twist upon twist upon twist. Chilling and haunting. I felt very cold when I finished reading it. Then I continued with The Death of Mrs. Westaway. Pretty good, too. Read The Lying Game, and I kind of guessed the twist halfway…it was pretty obvious, but the ending was still a shocker. Just started with The Woman in Cabin 10…I’m kind of afraid to continue, because you can’t put down her books once you start they’re so gripping. But I think The Turn of the Key is still my fav so far…super creepy.

I don’t think I will read more from the writer unless she writes more of this kind of novel, which as she says is not the case.
I rate the novel 3/5 on average the opening gets 1/5: I almost wanted my money back for it being a typical romance but read imagining the female lead to be an errand boy girl and all her actions being opposite. It was hilarious.
Then the dairy entries start and It had my full attention
I give 5/5 for the female lead and second lead and dairy and talking about violence and confusion. The state of confused mind is horrible but the first reaction to such a thing happening to you. I was thankful that the female lead forgave herself for being in the same situation like her mom and she understood that it was not her fault and also not her mom’s. Her mom was even more alone and I don’t know if she grew up in an abusive household. If not, I get that she would be even more confused and had no one to talk and share with.

Well to me it was clear the moment he got on his knees in the first few pages to beg for sex, what he was going to turn out into really. I could say I had seen the violence coming from very early pages, not because of the chair but because how he was manipulating her almost.
This behavior really shows someone who knows no boundaries and can resort to anything to get what they want and how they want it, no one ever told them no. I was sort of ready for it, I did not want to, but life taught me other wise, if a man gets on his knees to beg, run for your life, complete opposite of what romantic novels stand for. The biggest red flag ever.
This is how I think every romance novel ends in real life, the female lead becomes a part of the statistic.

Yeah. Because we are physically weaker. I know of abusive relationships in RL. Guy says sorry, Girl keeps making excuses. It’s exactly like the book. But I loved the sweetness of the flash backs, that young boy who tried his best to protect her. And the part where he told her he went to that empty house to kill himself, it broke my heart. I ‘ve switched to thrillers now. Creeping myself out with Ruth Ware’s books. Soooo creepyyy.

Oh Nice, I am a Scandinavian crime fiction buff, I dig them. I also read huge amount of crime and watch crime shows, till I am almost not shocked by anything. I am now trying to diversify my reading to non-fiction and slice of life. I recently read educated by Tara Westover, highly recommended, if you haven’t read it already and vegetarian by Han Kang, this was a brilliant book. And now I am reading Asymmetry and Celestial bodies. And next on my to read list is human acts by Han Kang. I finished “it ends with us” in 7 hours straight. It was that addicting, lol.

For me, the book probably had more impact because I had no idea what I was going to read about when I opened it. If I’d known from the start what the theme was, I prob would have guessed. But, because I purely got it out of the library because YY recommended it, I had no idea what was coming and was taken by surprise. It doesn’t happen all that often.
Also, can I add how much I liked that she ended up with the SL?
And yeah, for those beginning 60 or so pages, I was wondering why I was reading this book. Totally got taken in by the tone.

Like OFG says, there’s a scene early on in which the main character finds a diary and flips through it. The first few pages had the Hindi script on it, and it then became Korean. So we wondered about the origins of the original owner of the diary. I dropped the show so I didn’t know they’ve revealed his origin. He’s Pakistani. No wonder the script is familiar. I didn’t try to read it, but OFG did – OFG, it must be urdu words then, not hindi? (wapz – same alphabet, in case you’re from another part of the world)

I was wondering the same, the name of the guy is not a usual Hindu name. For example the following guy is the only guy on earth which turns up for this name. (Also they forgot the surname, being happy that the name had three syllable unit, so Korean)

So, here is my entry to it, umm maybe since I read a lot last week and also this monday, some which I found really interesting some I disagreed a lot with (I am sorry for that), this one is just meta in its nature:

Prologue:
08.09: You have packed your bags and there is still some time to catch your plane to your Room without windows.

You find out about makjang mondays.
You sign up and post an advert even.

You read all entries on makjang monday.
You are totally confused.
You check back the original notice and you read for the first time that makjang was supposed to happen in your real life
You blank out completely.
You had originally decided to make a full makjang story and had planned it carefully with so many unique new makjang plots
but you enrolled in a wrong competition and already are at the track so you may as well write something for it.

Main story:
08.09: You take your flight, planning your makjang story in the head and hoping your room is not underground in a dark alley.
You reach the airport and wait for immigration in the longest line because you are a candy. You smile sheepisly at the immigration guy, while telling why you are here in this new country
And then the immigration guy say in his very correct english accent like the guy below:

You walk past the gates and the strap of your hand bag breaks
You should look like a pissed off cat but you are still smiling like that sheep up there because you loved this guy’s voice. And you just pick up your bag and walk like a fabulous lama, happy
You stay over night with a friend and things are okay, you are still planning on your makjang story and now you are dead excited about seeing your room and finish your makjang plot planning.

09.09: You get ready and take the early morning train to your Room without window. You reach the new city and its raining! You reach your room. It is underground, you are disappointed, but anyways you make no effort to do anything about the situation, you have to have a real life experience to make your real life makjang story. You go out and go your business stuff.
09.09 night: You are back to your room without window, it is smaller than the room in Hell is others and the wash room could not be smaller, I can bet on my life, you can’t make it smaller! It is bigger in even areoplanes but whatever! Then you sleep, in two hours you hear people shouting in your hallway, you do nothing but imagine everything that could be happening: from just drunk people shouting, to people fighting, to it being a shady hotel to your neighbors high on drugs to people trying to make sure you just get out to look, but you don’t because you don’t care this much about reality! (It was only two men shouting, so you are never for your own sanity or safety get out of your bed).
10.09: Next morning you check there were CCTV in hallways, you are not super sure if they work but you hear noise again of the same two guy and figure out it is your next door neighbor, and they are still doing whatever they were the last night and are still alive and you go on with your hotel trip.
10.09 night: You get yourself a can of Fanta and as soon as you open it you realise you have just introduced more Carbon dioxide in your room without window! Not a great realization to have at 1 pm in night!
11.09 night: Now there are two girls in the room next to your and you hear more voices, of water running in shower and then you hear laughter and some ahah aaaa sounds, okay, now you trust imagination and you put on some music you have an important meeting and n time to plan your makjang happening in the room next wall!
12.04: Your last night in the room without window. You actually had left the can opened without drinking the fanta and increase your room’s CO2 level, other than you having a mild headache nothing much was achieved. You pack your suitcase and you go to sleep. There was a storm passing in the night you hear nothing in your room without window!
11.09: You go to your friends back home ask them to let you sleep on a sofa with windows open, you deserve all the air.

I think she’ll level up soon if she comments on articles and recaps a few times. I was mostly on the fan wall but managed anyway. I say she’ll level up at 11,000 upvotes, but sooner if she just comments 10-20 times on articles and recaps.

in my nerdiest heart of heart, this is my conclusion: the ticket is to post frequent, original comments on articles. not just replies to other’s comments, but your own reply. and to have those comments generate some discussion, which means that they probably need to be towards the top of the thread…just because beanies tend to interact with earlier comments more. i think than fanwall posts add something, follows and likes add something, but the comments seem to bear the most weight to me. (i know i am taking this waaaaay too seriously—that’s my charm yall lololol —- but my other option was to spend my time fretting over why my three year old wont potty train and wonder when daycare will kick him out because of it :P)

Lol! The struggle is real with potty training! Sometimes it helps just going cold turkey. No pull ups, no underwear, no pants for a day or two over a weekend. House arrest and clean up after him when he has accidents. He’ll figure it out.

This economist thought he could train his toddler using the reward method. A candy each time she went potty instead of the diaper. It worked for three whole days. Then this toddler who had no control previously, learned to go potty a few dribbles at a time, asking for a candy reward for each dribble. I was impressed – by the toddler.

@hebang, one must try to stay smarter than the toddler. This is difficult. I found more long term, but easily understood, goals were the ticket. And gradually increasing the goal line along the way. The rewards also needed to be tailored to each child. For instance one was a sucker for new clothing items or a toy, whereas, another responded to cold hard cash. Interestingly, these reward preferences still hold true for them as young adults, though I no longer reward their potty habits.

Do you remember when you leveled up? For me it was June 19th and at the time I had 13,463 comments and 34,049 likes. Maybe that will help us see if article comments are weighted more heavily than fanwall posts.

What I’d like to do, cos I do have the stats for this now, is track how many comments Paka and I commented on recaps between fan club president and unemployed slacker, and maybe even work out a rough rate of posting. However, I still have no way to access our comments on other people’s walls.

Part 1 of 2
Aside from the recent flurry of Errand Boy Girl
mass lunacyactivity on @yyishere‘s fan wall (which for me has been absolutely massive) and a few other occasions, I post fan wall comments comparatively rarely. I didn’t even know how to do it for a long time. In the recap threads, discussion of the recently-premiered part 3 of ARTHDAL CHRONICLES has also been brisk.My statistics as of this moment (09/16/19 EDT @1858):

I have not been posting much in 2019 until recently as many of the shows I’ve been watching have not been recapped, and
(1) thus had no fixed officially-designated places to discuss them (JOSEON SURVIVAL; LOVE AFFAIRS IN THE AFTERNOON; Cdrama BEFORE WE GET MARRIED). In lieu of an official recap thread, I prefer to discuss in What We’re Watching rather than Open Thread, but I still end up in OT anyway;
or, (2) shows were eventually wee-capped, but the lag time was too great for me to strike while the iron was hot while I still recalled what I had seen due to watching other shows;
(3) I couldn’t comment in a timely fashion to participate in active discussions (although I usually don’t care, and post anyway);
(4) I’ve been watching far fewer dramas this year than in 2018 (when I set a personal record of 39 live-watches, IIRC, in addition to older shows and movies);
My viewing has decreased in 2019 because:
(A) I’ve become pickier about starting to watch dramas after quite a few shows ended unsatisfactorily in 2018;
(B) I’ve been under the weather and resting more;
(C) Some of the shows I’ve been watching have left me wrung out (even in a good way, such as HAECHI and NOKDU FLOWER), or frustrated / let down / cranky (CROWNED CLOWN, ABSOLUTE BOYFRIEND, ANGEL’S LAST MISSION: LOVE; and JOSEON SURVIVAL – whose subtitles were summarily discontinued after a cast change);
(D) NOKDU FLOWER had been recapped in the beginning, but was discontinued. Alas, it premiered before HAECHI ended, so I couldn’t pay as much attention or comment early on. I got overwhelmed with my voluminous background research, and gave up trying to organize and post it. The subject matter of the show was mentally and emotionally draining at times, while the production and performances were absolutely topnotch;
(E) KINGDOM and ARTHDAL CHRONICLES premiered while I was already avidly watching other shows, and I couldn’t focus on them as well as I would have liked. Both have aired partial seasons, which has been distracting. Since the return of ARTHDAL, I’m again posting essays;
(F) I haven’t been commenting on LET ME HEAR YOUR SONG in its wee-caps. Today at long last I posted my Rampant Speculations (TM) in the eps. 21-24 thread.

If I remember correctly you leveled up to FCP at the beginning of the year and I was about two months? later. Same happened with UESIST- you levelled up in June ish and I levelled up at the end of August. I’ve been taking about 7-8 months to level up in these higher levels for the past several levels, so you may not think you’re active but you’re still ahead of me lol

It occurs to me that one of the stats that is not listed is # of Thumbs-Up Bestowed. I’m heavy-handed in my bestowal as I like to encourage discussion.
I wonder if character count comes into play, because I often post full-blown essays, and then engage in similar discussions with other Beanies — which then go off on tangents. If we’re lucky, we somehow manage to relate the whole shebang back to the original topic, or at least Kdramas in general.
I periodically go on music-posting binges on my fan wall. Sometimes they feature BGM from a particular drama, other times, I just get a yen to listen to vintage music and end up posting a virtual free-form playlist that has zilch to do with Kdrama.

No no this is a solid theory for what kinds of comments add more to it. And could be right.
The reason I take so much notice of this in particular is that it may explain what @pakalanapikake does that I don’t on recap threads that means she levels up higher, despite me having thrice the normal stats of most beanies.
If I don’t know what to say to someone on my original comment I tend to just post a random reply and move on rather than engaging in discussion. So good theory!

I’ve actually posted less on recap threads since the advent of the new site. It’s much harder for me to keep track of long discussions now than before, when posts used to be numbered.
Of course, the other reason is that I hardly watch dramas that are recapped anymore.

Let me tell you what I am searching for in Indian books: Sometimes I feel I know everything about and sometimes I fell I know nothing about life in India. So I wanted to discover life of people in this country, to understand them much better but at the same time, when I see most of the books, they are not deep, they don\’t explore what I want to know (not that I know what I am really looking for in this country) but still. Most of the stories are from long ago, we have a strange ability to be stuck in past or mythology or have an even strange ability to talk about things from the most extreme point of view of a sex-worker (I am not going to debate on their status or why such books are necessary and should be read or why I had enough of them), or we just talk about the strange middle class\’s obsession with money, I think I know all that there is to know about such an Indian family, they are almost totally same in their behavior across all the demographics of the country.
I think I am looking for some form of exploration of the concept of individuality or a lack of thereof in this country. More like what these people think or don\’t at all. This I expect to be very different across different various regions, even though oppressive and corrupt environment and balant sexism has such a strong uniting bond in this country.

Also, I don’t like this language at all, which makes a big part of my complicated relationship with the country!
Also, the amount of armed conflicts that keep on happening in this country which I have never heard people talking about or writing books on, maybe its just me who does not know.
So maybe a bit more on non-fiction but not from those absurd news report authors, they make everything into a fiction. More from some body who lives there and writes a memoir of their life, minus the judgement.

You are originally from here right? And you moved away for work and studies? Or have you never stayed in this country?
Life here is mundane but to live here is not so bad. In looking for an exploration of the concept of individuality and searching for a discussion of armed conflict, you may be looking at the country through the eyes of a “westerner”. Yes to the environment being oppressive and blatantly sexist, but the sense of community isn’t always an oppressive and sexist thing. Also, I suppose you’re not reading the right books? Not all books will cover these kids of topics obviously – and they shouldn’t, there is life here that does not struggle with armed conflict (like mine) – but you’ll find plenty that will.

Yes and no, to what you say, the country I lived in and still come back to is a very different from what I write, I have been made so by the people who lived with me, they were/are not perfect and they were/are not sexist at all. I have fond memories and bad memories as well of the country, that is why I am looking for books which tell me a very different India from what I know. If there is any. Some self reflectory and some how talking about philosophy which makes us. Oppressive and corrupt I say because it is a lot corrupt but for oppressive I meant the caste divide and dosmetic abuse and violence in general, which for me is still some thing I was a lot protected from while growing up so I have no knowledge. Also I find it hard to find such stories because I don’t know what is authentic and also the people who experience it are not all literate a lot as well. So they who tells their stories?
Greenie, I don’t know any books about such things or kinds of topics. I have no idea of this part of the country. I want to know about them. Do you have recommendations for me?
Your and mine life are somehow the people who have a very protected life and without armed conflict and I know mostly how it is.
I will be more able to appreciate it if I know the spectrum of life in this country.
About individuality is something I want to explore in my culture, my mom is even more so than I am and she has not lived in a European country, but was raised in the wilderness of a dacoit village and she is a professor. We have this individuality a lot in us so I wanted books which talks about men and women and how does which culture influence such things. Sexism and class divide oppression is something that unites the whole world even, so nothing special about India.

You make sense. 🙂 And sadhana covered book suggestions. I normally read non fiction, stuff like “Environmental jurisprudence and the Supreme Court” and I don’t think that’s what you’re looking for.
I did mean eyes of a “westerner” in the way that @minminfan says it. The lens from which you’re judging your reading offers no answers, but in fact, all books about everyday life/ordinary protagonists will explore will these ideas. It may not be “overt” perhaps but I actually tend to dislike authors like Arundhati Roy or Amitav Ghosh for sometimes excessively going into these concepts.
The caste divide and dosmetic abuse and violence hmmm…I recently read a book called “Democracy on the Road” wherein the author, an elections junkie, chronicles over 25 years of elections in India, that he covered as a journalist. It’s not an academic book, just a chronicle. He talks extensively of the caste system and how it affects votes. It’s a fun and insightful read.

I can do well with books which do not offer any answers. I am a researcher that for me is the most natural situation to end up in. I love academic exposition unless they write in a very obscure way. Arundhati Roy I have only partially read when I was very young, so maybe I should try again to finally decide I don’t like :). India is so vast and varied that literally every single thing you think about India (even if they’re contradictory) will be true of at least some part of India. We have some of the poorest and richest people, and some of the most progressive-thinking as well as the most retrogressive-thinking (as typified by our current govt) co-existing here.
In novels exploring the Indian psyche, even in the ones that you feel are overdone or “stuck in the past”, you have to read between the lines to get at what the authors mean. All the novels that talk about family in India tackle, at some level, the concept of individuality that you speak of. Who gets to be an individual? Who doesn’t? At what cost does that come? You will see questions of borders and what makes home, in Amitav Ghosh’s Shadow Lines. You will see how women constantly subvert all that you speak of, and challenge their environment in their own way in the works of many women writers – Shashi Deshpande for example. You will see the glitz and glamour of the “high-society” folks in a book that was mentioned on the other thread – The Windfall. I don’t think we’d have books that explicitly say “this is the only thing this is going to be about.”
If you’re talking about the conflicts in Kashmir, in the heartlands in the jungles, or in the North-east – there are plenty of books that do so.
Also, saying “absurd news report authors” is a little harsh. There are journalists who spend their lives immersed in the conflicts or issues they are reporting on, and do so with great credibility and care. A famous example being P. Sainath’s Everybody Loves a Good Drought. (Highly recommend this book.) You can also watch this video to see how the farmer suicide crisis circa 2001 was covered (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4q6m5NgrCJs)

Sujatha Gidla’s Ants Among Elephants might be something you like. But even memoirs come with a lens of judgement. Every piece of writing does.
Just a suggestion – before you delve into books, perhaps read up on what’s happening in various parts and demographies of the country? There are excellent sites (in my opinion) like Scroll, The Wire, Newslaundry, The Newsminute, Down to Earth that cover a spectrum of issues. This might give you a better idea on how to interpret the various things you read in books, whether they’re using “judgement” as you put it, or if they’re being fair.

That is why I said that I know this country too well, that I want to explore it from points I don’t know, now I think I will make an argument circular.

You can count them by pages of comments: every page has 50 comments and then you go to last page and count the number of comments on last page

No, I am not an artist, I am a (pure) mathematician 🙂 (this is the closest science comes to art, we take great pride in beauty, and for us every proof should be correct and beautiful, else its a fail, hahah).
(I am neither from US or UK, but from India originally and live now in Austria)
I have visited some parts of both UK and US. (Other than MSRI hill top near Berkeley and the woods, I have to say I don’t like much in either countries)
For me home is mostly when I am with some of my math friends and family, which ever country it is or city is, it does not matter, we will have fun. I also feel home at airports, they have a weird familiarity to them, no matter where, hahaha.

that is so so so cool– a lot of respect. i don’t have the mind for that and it’s always confused me and while i think scientists and mathemiticians are nuts, i am fascinated with your brains! it’s fundamental and, next to art, the only language that is the same for all. you’ve lived a really interesting life omg! i hope you like austria, i wanna visit there too! and i hope you can go home-home from time to time.
that’s just like me. that’s why i’ve honestly never been a good tourist. it doesnt matter where i am, as long as i’m comfortable with my surroundings. so i’d rather visit a place for a month and let it seep into me while i enjoy time with family and friends. i’m back in my parent’s house and i’m just so happy cos i know everyone around me and i know the roads. *_*
i HATE traveling, but i dont mind airports because i really love being alone in them? it’s really familiar, those trips! i’m sure you’ve taken waaay more than i have but wow i was in-and-out of train stations when i went to college then when i moved to the UK i have never been in more airports. EVER.

I finished Forest of Secret! Yay!! Finally! it was a very good show, I will rate it 9.5/10. (0.5 deducted because I could guess all the twists in second half, other than 07 being a tattoo DJ on Mr. Yoon, which is why I only deduct 0.5)
Also please you cannot have a season 2 without bae donna, who is gonna give Weasel King those adorable sketches?
