One of the elements I really really loved about The Untamed is designing of the sets. The set designs have been done with such an attention to detail and color… Just look at the use of red against the blue in these scenes: The blooming of love against all the odds!!

Without fail. This is where WWX told LZ he was his soulmate and everything about that scene was absolutely beautiful and perfect.

One of my favorite scenes– esthetically and also because of the significance of the exchange between Lan Zhan and Wei Ying <3

The zoom out that oversaw all of LZ’s mother’s home was just *chefs kiss*.

@larelle79 there are so many iconic snow scenes in Asian Dramas but they are mainly cheesy and cliche, yet the snow scene here is so elegant , it’s like the snow creates the feeling of “transparency” and “purity”

And with the end of that long shot where WWX was there leaning against the outside wall and was gone, I think that was the easter egg of them consummating their relationship.

          Just a sharp shot overall.

I can’t really pick out a scene over the rest – though this is striking. Now I’ll pay more attention.
But overall the design of each set is quite striking – as is the cinematography as they show it all.

It is all just breathtakingly beautiful – and the sets are too. 🙂

I love all the aerial shots of the Cloud Recesses’ buildings and the beautiful lotus patterns in all the scenes at Lotus Pier, so that’s basically half the drama. lols

Yes, it’s beautiful. I had come up with a word I thought perfectly described every aspect of Untamed: “Vibrant”.

I don’t know how to do these gifs so I can’t add any. But if someone can, my favorite is – oh, wait, there are too many.

So. one thing the team was lauded for was keeping the aesthetics similar to fan work and anime

that could have been another outlet of backlash.. and as far as i can tell, on TGCF they are sticking to maintaining the same strokes and patterns as of popular fanarts much more stringently

I know that the designs and concepts are all from the source material (novel and anime), yet it’s not easy to bring those aesthetics to life with such an accuracy and delicacy

The production and crew definitely did a beautiful and fantastic job at the set and costume designs, and their attention to detail is just LOVE

Chinese period dramas are usually feast for the eyes. Glorious, beautiful, aesthetically awesome sets, costumes and props with amazing details.
I am not sure but this drama should be in the average or higher than average in terms of budget. I’ll say they spent it well. I don’t care about spectacular on location shooting or advanced CGI if the important elements aren’t there.

I feel that I’m so spoiled by these good period C dramas and beautiful aesthetics that I find it hard to watch Korean period. I used to like colourful but now they look plain. Another thing which I never liked in saeguks was the top knot and shapeless hanboks for men. At least in C wuxia or xianxia, there’s a good chance of getting glorious mane like WY and LZ have. Their robes are also cinched at the waist which show off a V shape torso instead of an inverted frock.

I 100% prefer the looks of cdrama costumes and hair. I absolutely love most cdrama period styles (except Qing dynasty like in Yanxi Palace). Their beautiful long hair, fitted or flowing robes. But I really don’t like the joseon style. They may be beautiful color wise but they are all incredibly frumpy looking with the silliest hats and topknots.

Yes, same here. The Qing dynasty men’s pigtail is the worst. Other than that, they are all better than the topknot with hat. Goryeo should be fine but kdrama don’t seem to make good wigs. They were mostly terrible.

For the Chinese costumes, even if the colours aren’t always multicoloured, the details are very intricate. For example, LZ wears white and shades of light blue but you can see the diverse patterns, embroidery and texture of the fabric

I’ve seen some good Goryeo styles, but sadly there are very few and far between dramas about that period. And yes, you are more likely to have an awful wig than a good one in a kdrama.

One thing that drew me initially to cdramas was their beautiful styles. They definitely do a wonderful job on their outfits. Some of the color combinations are absolutely beautiful and yes, the details they typically put into the outfits are wonderful.

I loved LZ outfits. It may have been just whites or blues, but on closer inspection the details put into them was very exquisite ❤️

I think it’s not just about the good quality wigs, it’s that wind effect that makes the wigs look so ethereal and beautiful… also combine that ever flowing hair with the flowing exquisite costumes, long sleeves, wide shoulder and the wide sash on those thin waist… the combination is just so pleasant! Oh, I want to time travel to ancient China ❤️

The Untamed is my very 1st C-darma and for me it was close to perfection when it comes to the design of set, costumes and makeups especially in comparison to period k-dramas which always have same settings, buildings and decorations regardless of the dynasty (in one word they never make me want to visit Korea)… However to be fair some period k-dramas have stunning cinematography (e.g. Mr. Sunshine) and some Goryeo one have decent costume design too (e.g. Shine or Go Crazy) and some have the most gorgeous team of actors (Moon Lover), but unfortunately they barely have all the elements fit together… they focus on one element and forget about the others…

Those shapeless puffy hanboks is one of the reason that Korean actors have to lose too much weight to look good on them!! Some of them even look anorexic after finishing a period drama…
