Day 6: Seems like Biblical quotes are popular at the moment. I’ll throw mine in the mix as well!
Song of Songs 2:10-13
My beloved spoke and said to me,
‘Arise, my darling,
my beautiful one, come with me.
See! The winter is past;
the rains are over and gone.
Flowers appear on the earth;
the season of singing has come,
the cooing of doves
is heard in our land.
The fig-tree forms its early fruit;
the blossoming vines spread their fragrance.
Arise, come, my darling;
my beautiful one, come with me.’
@ally-le: It is SO R-rated! HAHAHA! I actually have this commentary that mentions how erotic it is, but THEN in the exposition, even this commentator glosses over what the text is explicitly saying!!! HAHA! It’s just “assumed” that the more salacious elements would be naturally understood by anyone reading it. HAHAHAHAHA! Oh my!
Passages from the bible are always so uplifting, even if we don’t see it in the moment (like I was experiencing a few days ago), so thank you for this reminder, @pineapplegongzhu
Hey bb, long time no see! (I have been truant from db for a while now and facebook for literal years, I miss our old MLSHR gang).
That is a beautiful piece of verse but from what I know of the Song of Songs….a PG-13 excerpt? Still incredible and uplifting though, and much-needed now.
@pogo1: WHAT’S UP, GIRLFRIEND?!! MISSED YOU AND THE MLSHR gang so much! I’ve also been truant from DB for a while. It was Crash Landing on You that brought me back.
Oh, Song of Songs is definitely rated R generally, but I’d say this G rated excerpt, no? I mean, it’s not as if either of them are describing the other in euphemistic terms. It’s a sweet love call, n’est ce pas? 🙂
I like being in control. If love means letting go, who is strong enough to pry my fingers open?
I like being able to see through people. Dare I even brag, but I enjoy anticipating people’s moves as if we were on a chessboard.
Men demand I play the demure woman, as if a Scarlett could ever become a Melanie! Ha!
They want a Helen of Troy, but I’m Cassandra.
I squirm out of the pigeon holes they try to place me in. I won’t play nice to cater to their egos. I won’t cover over their insecurities when they have failed. They ask me to respect them like men, when they make play at being a man, all the while avoiding bleeding like a real one. They chaff as I dictate the rules of engagement. They fear me. As they should. They resent me. But, it is not my problem they are weaker than I.
I thought you’d be just as easy to predict and control.
But, time and again you defy me. You don’t come when I call. But when I turn, suddenly you’re a breath away.
You throw me off balance. I hate that.
Your gentle gaze unnerves me.
Your soft sway disarms me.
Your words are quiet, but they have the roar of many waters behind them.
Your strength is like a blade of grass growing out of concrete.
And before I knew what I was doing, before I could stop myself, my fingers opened to you.
The day and moment when we finally meet someone whom we can truly let go in front of and be released and not have to worry about being in control in front of them is truly amazing and SO freeing 🤗🤗🤗
It can definitely feel like that, too!! 😅😅😅 Because control—knowing it and having it— gives a sense of security and knowing, but without it, we don’t know what or who to turn to and, yes, it can feel daunting and also as if the world may turn upside down.. But I assure you, dear friend, that everything will be okay 🥰🥰🥰
Got him immediately! But the result wasn’t very surprising: I love books, classical music and I’m playing the piano, too. I knew he’s my soulmate as soon as I saw the interior of his room!
C.S. Lewis, in his book called The Four Loves, expounds on four different sorts of love: familial love, platonic love, romantic/erotic love, and charity. But, the one I want to talk about is platonic love, because it is so underrated.
Unlike romantic love (according to C.S. Lewis), platonic love does not gaze AT the object of affection, but rather two people, side by side, gaze in the same direction at a common object of affection. Their affection for that object is what binds them together.
In my own musing on love, I call some types of love “redemptive” love and others “joyful love”. While the categories are by no means mutually exclusive, I do mean something different for each. “Redemptive” love is when two people share a similar kind of pain, and through empathy, compassion, and kindness, each tries to help the other heal. So, the common denominator is pain. In “joyful” love, I mean the things that give us joy because it touches upon something that is so intrinsically essential to our flourishing and thriving, who we were made to be, that we feel more alive and ourselves when we are immersed in it. Redemptive love (hopefully) is temporary, but joyful love is forever.
What I love about Dramabeans is that I find a community in which we all love these stories which are told, the characters created, and the scenarios that challenge, move and awaken us to who we are, and who we wish to be. Sure, there are redemptive elements to watching these shows (who doesn’t need a good cry every once in a while?). But, more than that, I love how we can muse over, argue over, and fangirl over our favorite actors, actresses, characters, music, and storyline. It is the love of story that binds us together. I love what a warm community it has been for me. Truly, I feel blessed to be able to chat excitedly about our newest drama obsession together.
Thanks so much for being my “joyful” friends around the world!
I can totally understand and empathize with all that you've shared in your post…. And it's all the more deeply felt for me, an INFJ personality type XD
I too am a big fan of CS Lewis and he wrote something about if we look into the lives of our enemies we will see that they too have suffered great pain.
I can’t remember the book or the exact quote but it spoke LOADS to me.
It definitely speaks truth… A lot of times, we are so quick to react and to respond to negativity, we don’t try to think deeper–if at all– about the root of where all the negativity comes from
@pineapplegongzhu
You captured my sentiments about this site and our beanie friends all over the world perfectly. I don’t know what I would do without all of you.
And about the love – my mom told me once
“We are here to love each other into wholeness”
That thought has gotten me through many things in life.
love and hugs to all of you!
I DO recommend it! The most words I have ever written in an essay on a drama is for Lookout!
The ending… sigh the ending is not executed in the best way, but I still recommend it for the character writing and acting along, which is pretty phenomenal.
I also cried three times in my write up of it and I never cry for dramas.
And the reason I mention it here is because in my opinion anyway, the show comes one of the closest I’ve seen in dramaland to addressing the idea of Agape (or Charity).
(And also your redemptive love haha).
It’s not perfect, but it makes you think anyway.

Day 3: Love III by George Herbert
Love bade me welcome. Yet my soul drew back
Guilty of dust and sin.
But quick-eyed Love, observing me grow slack
From my first entrance in,
Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning,
If I lacked any thing.
A guest, I answered, worthy to be here:
Love said, You shall be he.
I the unkind, ungrateful? Ah my dear,
I cannot look on thee.
Love took my hand, and smiling did reply,
Who made the eyes but I?
Truth Lord, but I have marred them: let my shame
Go where it doth deserve.
And know you not, says Love, who bore the blame?
My dear, then I will serve.
You must sit down, says Love, and taste my meat:
So I did sit and eat.
We met on a summer day. One look and my heart was yours.
I wore red, but you only noticed my friend.
How many months were wasted trying to find you again? Then, one day, you were amongst the books and bookshelves.
You shook my hand, and said you’d write. You never did.
Each time I thought I had forgotten you, you waltzed back into my life. Only long enough to cut my heart but not the thread that binds my thoughts to you. Then, you waltz away again on the wind.
Your politeness divides us more than the pond. The saints belong to you, not to me…and yet, it will be St. Valentine’s Day soon. Will you ever be mine?
It\’s still February 1st, and my good friend @hotcocoagirl, reminded me that we should post things that we love as a reminder that there is quite a lot of love still in this broken world.
I’m currently alone in my tower (I actually live in what could be arguably be a 16th century castle, although currently it is registered as an unoccupied English royal palace), happily watching Crash Landing on You after an unbearable week’s hiatus. If ever there was a person who could remind me that handsome chivalric men are still around, it would be Hyun Bin’s Ri Jeong Hyuk. But, on a more serious note, it is also my parents’ 45th wedding anniversary. It’s been a bumpy ride for them (and their kids), and it’s still not entirely smooth still…but we’ve come a long ways. Through thick and thin, I have a loving (if imperfect) family. What more could a girl ask for?
Congratulations to your family for enduring 45 years of marriage! I know how you may feel because my parents are the same, celebrating 43 years this year!
Congrats to your parents, and your family for staying together throughout it all ~ my parents are celebrating forty years this year, and I am in awe of people putting up with another human so intimately for so long ~
I realized yesterday that if I re-watched every episode of Crash Landing on You, one per day, I can basically shave off the withdrawal symptoms until episode 11 on February 1! YAY!
@bbstl: But, I’m also Hyun Bin-ging on Secret Garden and Memories of the Alhambra. I haven’t completed Hyde, Jekyll, Me yet, but I sort of put it aside since I find it a bit less compelling than the other two dramas.
Secret Garden is interesting because he’s so much younger there. I still see his magnetic quality and the raw talent, but he has certainly fine tuned in his skills over the years. I think Confidential Assignment and Memories of the Alhambra best showcase his maturity as an actor.
But, you were right… Memories of the Alhambra is Hyun Bin at his most gorgeous. Each and every shot with him in it is beautiful. I can’t take my eyes off of him! Even the lighting they used during sunset scenes and the like are just so strategically used to highlight his beauty. I feel bewitched but unable to break the spell…..
@bbstl: not yet! I’m hesitant to find it on pirated sites because of computer viruses, and it’s not on any of the legit sites. I do want to watch it, though!
I don’t know about you, but that kiss looks a bit too real. I think they ARE a couple in real life!! They are so cute!!! Hyun Bin ❤️ Son Ye Jin. I don’t believe their agencies.
OMO! No preview after CLOY episode 9! And they will be on hiatus AGAIN next week!! If there are no previews after episode 10, I\’m going to throw my remote control at the screen. 😭😭😭
Yeah they are a tease. They often completely mislead one by editting scenes differently. Or they will show the cliff-hanger or the final minute of the next episode!!! And worse than all, they sometimes show a scene, usually a kiss or a death or some other crucial event, that will happen two episodes later not one! That one especially completely ruins the next episode.
No no no, what do you MEAN no CLOY next week? tomorrow is SUNDAY there is going to be a CLIFFHANGER and if the previous weeks are anything to go by the cliffhanger is going to be a DOOZY.

I forget, did you watch Kim Sam Soon yet? Speaking of young Binnie 🥰
pineapplegongzhu
January 22, 2020 at 7:24 PM
@bbstl: not yet! I’m hesitant to find it on pirated sites because of computer viruses, and it’s not on any of the legit sites. I do want to watch it, though!

😲 waaaaat? No Kim Sam Soon? That’s unthinkable! I’m speechless.

isn’t it available on Viki.com? it will have ads, if you don’t subscribe… but it’s not laden with those nastygram pop ups….

It’s on Viki, if you’re able to use that.

you should watch the movie Fatal Encounter, Binnie was exceptionally handsome and cool in it…

People are so different. I always skip previews because they ruin the next episode for me!

January 18, 2020 at 11:29 AM
HA! Too right! To each their own. I think the previews give me something to look forward to. It’s bit of a tease, but I like it. HAHA!
Midnight
January 18, 2020 at 11:50 AM
Yeah they are a tease. They often completely mislead one by editting scenes differently. Or they will show the cliff-hanger or the final minute of the next episode!!! And worse than all, they sometimes show a scene, usually a kiss or a death or some other crucial event, that will happen two episodes later not one! That one especially completely ruins the next episode.
