Beanie level: Eunuch in drag

What’s up with ML everywhere smoking and playing with lighters? I get it, the Kdrama prop departments are obsessed with lighters but no smoking please 😑.

I thought I was the only one feeling like this ><
Everyone calls them hot, maybe that's why they keep showing them smoking 😩

    1

Yeah I was taken aback a little bit, I thought in SK they’re not supposed to show smoking scene on broadcast programs 😳

      3
      2

Netflix produced shows can show actual smoking scenes but broadcast can’t. Have they actually showed anyone smoking? Usually it’s just pull out a cigarette or lighter and then get interrupted.

        2
        2

You’re right, they weren’t actually smoking, but ep 5 of YOM showed ML holding a burning cigarette and DAYS, Vincenzo, and MRIG all showed ML sucking/almost sucking a cigarette. I think those scenes were suggestive enough to potentially mislead the audience into associating smoking with hot men. TBH I’m disappointed ~~~

Interesting point. In MOVE TO HEAVEN (on Netflix US) Lee Je-hoon (as Samchon) puffs away like he knows what he is doing.

I read somewhere that smoking scenes can be shown but they should’nt light a cigarette on screen. Afterwards I noticed in a lot of dramas they either cut away the lighting scene or they face backwards to light or just click several times but don’t light esp when the character is frustated. I honestly think that it is a pretty dumb rule.

Maybe it’s ppl and they will put another one for electronic cigarettes as a perfect birthday gift…

I’ve noticed a lot (more?) of smoking in recent kdramas, what’s up?

    5
    2

Me too, and it’s frustrating. It’s like they ran out of ideas to show how attractive men should behave and someone suddenly thought smoking men look cool, let’s bring it back ><

There’s definitely more *almost* smoking – I am not a fan.

OK so I checked My Roommate is a Gumiho today and was surprisingly entertained. It doesn’t have the wow factor of DAYS but the convo are digestible and I laughed quite a few times >D

Myeong Hee is a petite girl, but they keep drowning her in oversized shirt and maxi skirts ~~. Her clothes also make her look disproportionate (long torso, short legs). I mean she doesn’t have to be stylish but at least dress her properly please.

I know some beanies mentioned that the lighter showed up in YOM, but now that I’m watching YOM, hearing the lighter clicking sound after watching Vincenzo is just too surreal lol. I swear if I hear this sound in real life, I’ll definitely run for my life 😱

FML. I started Youth of May randomly out of boredom, and wow the main leads are so dreamy. I\’m so in love with them, and then I looked up the synopsis and found out about Gwangju Uprising!!!! 😳 My hunch tells me it’s gonna be sad ending with me crying buckets. Now I don’t know what to do 😭

I wanted to move on from Vincenzo so bad, but tvN and Swoon have kept churning out unreleased still cuts and bts every freaking days since Sunday TT.TT. I tried to watch other dramas nothing sticks 🙁

Purplefall, do you know what’s good for this problem? Easy – you watch it a second time around. You’ll either sit through and last until the last episode or you’ll trail off somewhere onto something else. Works like a charm! Trust me…I’m a fellow Beanie! Would I lie to you? Course not!
…Seriously though, it does work. Cheers.

Haha. I agree. I actually tried what you said and it worked pretty well. Someone recommended Imperial Coroner (C-drama) to me a couple weeks ago, and I think it helped distracting me from my post-Vincenzo withdrawal syndrome. I’ve also had my daily happy pills on IG and Twitter. Vincenzo’s cast has been very active on IG, and their interactions with each other and with fan are always heart-warming. I also created a Twitter account to join the CenCha/JeonKi fellow clowns lol. I heard that Jeon Yeo Bin is returning later this year in Glitch, and others in Vincenzo’s cast all have projects lining up in later half 2021, so it’s gonna be a good year. Can’t wait to see them again on the screens!

I just read that Disney+ is jumping into K-drama production. I was glad that Netflix has helped introducing more diverse content and new genres to K-dramas, but with every big streaming service now wanting their share in the K-drama world, I’m a bit worried how things will turn out.

    Me too.

I’m worried they will become too much like american shows in the bid to appeal to western audiences. It’s already noticeable with all these second seasons or kdramas that end without properly completing the storyline in hopes of getting another season (*looking at you Arthdal Chronicles, Vagabond*)

    6
    3

This is my biggest fear. I prefer K-drama over western multi-season shows because I want a proper closure for every story. Multi-season shows always leave me hanging and feeling like I waste my time for some unfinished product. Hopefully it won’t go in that direction 🤧.

I’m glaring at Vagabond and rolling my eyes at Arthdal.

But according to a show runner, I forgot for which show, Netflix doesn’t interfere at all. They just sign the checks & disappear.

Yeah, Disney+ and Apple TV+ have both ordered k-dramas and HBO is getting into Chinese dramas so I expect k-dramas won’t be far behind. I think it’s good in some ways, worrisome in others. Korea was starting to do more multi-season dramas before Netflix came on the scene, but I think it will become more standard now.

There will be some dramas I’ll be missing because I don’t have the money for all of these streaming services.

I think multi-season dramas are ok if they plan it ahead, make it clear to the audience, and stick to the plan. That’s why Kingdom worked for me, but I’ve seen too many shows getting canceled half way in the US that I fear that would be soon the fate of K-dramas.

      4
      1

Kingdom is a good example. I think most people, myself included, don’t mind second seasons if each season ends with a proper resolution. The problem is when they end on a clifhanger and then you have to wait years for the next part or worse they just get cancelled. I just hope they wont try to cater to american audiences too much and change what makes kdramas work in the first place.

I just said bittersweet goodbye to Vincenzo. On the sweet note, I’m glad that Vincenzo and Cha-young came clean with each other about their feelings. Their kisses at the end were so sweet and passionate. I was squealing and fangirling hard for the whole scene <3. I also love them using the meeting of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl as the analogy for their promise. That’s so romantic *heart eyes*.

However, there are few things I wish they had done it differently for the finale:

1) Han-seo’s death is unnecessary! Han-seo should have been able to survive the shot and lead a different life without Han-seok. If you want to punish him, give him some critical wounds, but the boy deserves to live!

2) Vincenzo’s first face-off with Han-seok after he got out of prison was badly written. It’s totally out of character that Vincenzo fails to counterattack Han-seok AT ALL. It’s the number one rule in fighting that you disarm the opponent before you face away from him for whatever reason. Vincenzo is a pro, it’s hard to believe that he would make this basic mistake, not once but twice in the show. The first time was when hit men attacked Cha-young at home, Vincenzo knocked the guy with the hammer down and turned to Cha-young without disarming him, leaving him a chance to throw the hammer at them. This time, Vincenzo totally could have joined Han-seo to bring down Han-seok. They could have wrestled a bit and Han-seok/Cha-young might have got shot in the middle. Like, the result would have been the same, but it would have been more believable that way.

3) In ep 20, the show makes a big statement about the role of villains in fighting villains. However, I don’t really agree with the whole of it. Vincenzo has showed that he has the brain to PREVENT villains from making more crimes. Shouldn’t we all strive to achieve that goal instead of letting villains do more terrible things and punish them afterward? Like Han-seok, if only he had been punished early, he wouldn’t had been able to kill that many people at the end. I think it’s unnecessarily arrogant and cruel to play with your enemy, let them run amok with crimes, and punish them ruthlessly for the new crimes they commit.

4) The Russian “atonement” punishment was way too violent and cruel for me to handle. I felt the same about the terrorist attack in ep 17. I hope nobody watches this show and tries to use these approaches in real life because that would be real scary.

4

Agreed with all of your points. Vincenzo and Han-seo could easily outmatch Han-seok “together”. But i guess the purpose of those scenes are Han-seo’s death. I cannot watch Han-seok’s death as well. I literally cover the scene and just read the subs. I decided to just take the show for granted and not to think too much about the crooked moral compass of the leads.

    2
    1

Me too. I couldn’t watch Han-seo’s death either, and the Russian thing too. The writing of how they deal with Han-seok and Han-seo ruined the finale for me. I only half-heartedly forgave the show because they gave me a proper closure for Vin-Cha couple.

      2
      1

I read on Twitter that the production struggled over the ending. I personally think they want to give the villains a death as painful as possible to emphasize Vincenzo as mafia. But after that, it’s also not possible to give the usual happy ending for the leads because they’re not the nicest people on earth either (as usually portrayed by drama leads). Well that’s how they decided to make the ending after all lol

        1

There are so many ways to meaningfully kill the villains without the gory torture, but they just had to go the hard way :(. They should have just focused on our leads and the Geumga gang instead. Anyway, it is what it is now. I plan to rewatch as many enjoyable cuts from the show as possible to forget what they did to Han-seo :((

I love that Vincenzo and Cha-young always own up to their actions and never shy away from calling out themselves for what they truly are. What a powerful couple. Now stop teasing each other with cryptic statements and kiss/confess already *^*

New OST from Vincenzo. I don’t think I’ve heard it in any episode, and it’s totally a wedding song lol
Will they finally give us some fan service in the finale????

I was a crying mess after Navillera finale :((
My week is currently filled with many twisted thrillers, but N has been the only wholesome precious fuzzy spot that keeps me safe and sane <3

Thank god Vincenzo ep 18 is back to its wacky self! And no gun pointing for the ending! The bromance Vin has with the nutria and Han-seo is my favorite of ep 18 <3
Final week please come quickly!

Vincenzo ep 17 is quite concerning to me. While I still enjoy the assembly of the Geumga gang, I also feel deeply troubled by the whole terrorist attack they did to the corrupt officials. I keep thinking that one must have felt so disaffected by the corrupt state of the legal system that they think fully embracing mob rules is the way to go. No matter how we romanticize the mafia, they are criminals who do heinous crimes, and what Vincenzo and his Geumga gang did was criminal. I can’t speak for the writer, and I want to believe that the writer of Vincenzo is only inspired by mafia-styled retribution to build entertaining elements for the show and doesn’t try to legitimize or normalize it. I’m totally a fan of Vincenzo’s first 16 eps, but the last 4 eps might make or break the show for me. Keep my fingers crossed for now.

I’m on ep 2 of Love Up to Your Name but both main leads are annoying as individuals and doctors. Not sure if I should keep watching it. Any advice? 😣

Really? Aww I really loved that one I don’t know why, but I can’t say specifically when I started loving it. Perhaps the humor?

Try 2 more episodes. I found the female lead annoying at first but I changed my mind after a few episodes.

Wow Song Joong Ki is so much better playing the dark characters. The later half of Ep 16 is just chilling. It\’s kind of satisfying to see the Babel gang shriveling at the entrance of the real evil 😏

You can literally feel the anger in him and the switch in his eyes. Also how he controlled himself in front of Cha Young but luckily our girl is ever the understanding wife partner and just told him to make those guys pay.

Wow Vincenzo really does everything Chae-young wishes. That bloody ending was grossly marvelous 😅

Navillera\’s characters feel very Western at times to me. Everyone seems to be struggling on their own but there\’s something romantic about them too. I think I\’ll stick with the drama ☺️.

I thought Vincenzo couldn\’t introduce any more surprising characters but ep 10 just proved me wrong. I can\’t wait for the gold operation to take over the Babel plot 😀
