5/5: 2 (ENA’s Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Watcha’s Recipe for Farewell)
4/5: 1 (MBC’s Wild Boar Hunting)
3/5: 4 (ENA’s Gaus Electronics, tvN’s Missing: The Other Side 2, JTBC’s The Good Bad Mother, KBS’s My Perfect Stranger)
2/5: 19

3/5: 3 (MBC’s Wild Boar Hunting, Coupang Play’s Unicorn, ENA’s Gaus Electronics)
2/5: 5
1/5: 46

Breakdown by television/OTT
Cable (tvN, JTBC, ENA): 26 (Subjective average: 1.73 / Objective average: 1.23)
Terrestrial (KBS, MBC, SBS): 15 (Subjective average: 1.53 / Objective average: 1.2)
Others: 14 (Subjective average: 1.79 / Objective average: 1.36)

General remarks
First things first, where’s the Recipe For Farewell show page? The small OTT networks have certainly delivered this year: Unicorn being another highlight from the past year, Seasons of Blossom having Seo Ji Hoon in the best way possible and Once Upon a Small Town … I guess there’s always a dud somewhere. But it’s amazing (or not, depending on your perspective) that the terrestrial networks are now each only airing one drama a week when they used to be the only ones airing dramas: things have certainly evolved dramatically (heh) as OTT becomes the new normal?

Miracle Brothers: Not only does it come from the director/writer of Beautiful World, that cast list screams experienced sans the leading actress. The synopsis also looks very promising!

Thanks for the heads up on this drama. It hasn’t been on my radar at all.
Should we take anything from the fact that (according to AsianWiki) the last project for both writer and director was JTBC’s BEAUTIFUL WORLD (2019) (Viki US). I loved it.
When I see a 3-4 year gap in listed projects I wonder what these folks have been doing.
MIRACLE BROTHERS looks very interesting. Also it is another drama that will be premiering within a month and as a US viewer I have no idea if it will be available on a legal stream.

Radily and a Rant

Another day at Dramabeans, another passive-aggressive comment asking me why I\’m still watching shows when I apparently \”hate\” them. Bonus points for assuring me they have \”no shade intended\” and are \”just curious\”.

Of course, I had graciously and sincerely provided a drama recommendation to this Beanie previously. I even went to check their profile to ensure they hadn’t already watched it, so this is just double the betrayal.

If only they had actually went to my profile and read some of the comments I had written in the past: they would’ve realised that I do actually give positive reviews when the show actually has an interesting story. Or that I do actually drop shows.

I can only imagine the vitriol I would get if I posted negative comments on some favourite idol’s show on Reddit or MyDramaList. But I guess that even in this day and age, it’s hard to be critical even on a platform like Dramabeans.

Maybe I should save the link to this post so that I can always use it as a reply whenever someone’s trying to judge me for spending my time the way I like it. Or maybe not, because they’ll unilaterally believe I’m incapable of using my time wisely.

12
12

I agree that Dramabeans is generally a safe place to share your views so I appreciate you taking the time to share your response to the framing of these variations on a theme questions, as I have noticed that usually you ignore them.

What I have assumed from my limited time on the site is that you made a decision to share your ratings as they may help others make decisions about whether to start a drama. We all have very different tastes so you give subjective and objective ratings and you keep it short. You watch most dramas to the end as you like to see whether the initial promise will lead to a surprising twist or unique plot line. Sometimes, the perseverance pays off, most of the time it doesn’t. Like everyone else you stay watching if there is something that you like even if it’s hidden amidst lots you don’t. You therefore rate a drama on its full run rather than at the point of decline or disappointment which may be where some beanies would drop and move on.

I have looked on your fan wall and found the comprehensive list of 200+ drama reviews and find the use of subjective and objective number ratings easy to understand. I couldn’t find the weekly letter explanation, but I may have missed it. I have wanted to know for a while now if D is the lowest score or if it just means a drama is watchable but not really adding much? I understand you may not want to answer any more questions about your system and would prefer people adopt a ‘take it or leave it’ approach to your reviews. I know I tried to ask before but it was probably in an unhelpful way so was probably clumped in with the other annoying questions that you don’t waste time or energy on answering.

    7
    1

A+ is the highest, D- is the lowest, I guess any lower is a F and a drop (lol).

Generally speaking (the +/- is just to more finely differentiate between currently airing dramas):
      – A: I’m super duper impressed by the writing and this show is almost guaranteed to be the Drama of the Year in my opinion.
      – B: The show is objectively great for me and I’ll recommend it, though if I squint hard I can poke holes in it.
      – C: There’s one or two interesting things (narratively) around in the plot somewhere that might have promise, but the overall story is generally quite mediocre.
      – D: My brain is off at this point. I just enjoy the acting/music/directing/makjang/whatever as it comes.

I should note that the mood ranking does take into account subjective stuff and I do find myself inflating grades if there’s a show to die for but there’s no point trying to codify the likability of any particular show so there’s that.

      7
      1

Thank you so much for giving such a detailed explanation, that helps me understand the ranking as I always read a D as the equivalent of an F on your scale! A lot of the no brainer, I just need a drama to debrief and none of the live watches are doing it for me I would need to score as a C using your scale as they need to have something to keep me interested. I still have so many other new to me dramas to watch and my window of tolerance for dramas is really small. I am not very discerning mainly because I have not been able to access many of the greats due to the content. Therefore, anything at D would be a drop for me as it means the story is not picking up or there are too many characters that are annoying me. It took ages for me to give myself permission to drop dramas and in some cases to not hold out for the 4 episode watch before judging criteria that has been a great help and was recommended by one of the beanies. Thanks again for taking the time to explain.

Here to chime in that i appreciate your criticism. I feel people get a little concerned when you add a grade to the ratings I feel (which is yes imo none of their concern, that rating is for you) but as far as the criticsm goes you critize the show on the same things other drama viewers do without the ratings. So I feel the rating draws their concern even though you are essentially saying similar things to others.

Besides that, I guess not many people understand that 1. People can use their time to complete a show as they wish, 2. Not everyone drops shows, 3. People are allowed to criticize shows when they don’t like it and are still watching it. There are so many reasons to continue watching a show even if you don’t like it and that does not mean you should stop commenting over it completely. I guess it’s just a lack of understanding that not everyone has to drop a show they are not liking.
Plus, I hope you’d also cut them some slack. Not writing on the fanwall about the show does not denote they didn’t watch or try it at all and again they aren’t obliged to try someone else’s recommendation. But then that’s entirely up to you. I personally enjoy your views on dramas even if our opinions do not usually align.

    6
    0

I really appreciate your comments, even if sometimes we don’t agree, but the world would be really boring if we all had the same opinion.

Sometime ago I was asked why did I find in 2PM that made me a fan, and I gave my sincere answer of it, stating that in the end you like what you like and sometimes there is no reason to, only to receive a comment that I there must. Be an objective reason and if I just didn’t know what that reason was well… maybe I should reflect on myself, I obviously ignored the comment because as you said here, everyone has the right to do with their time as they wish.

Keeps on sharing your reviews and comments. I always appreciate them.

    7
    1

The objective reason is that i found Taecyeon superhot in a fake marriage show and upon research must’ve found some 2PM songs that suit my palate (thank God it wasn’t 10 out of 10, that one still makes me cringe) 🤣

      1
      1

It tool me a while to appreciate 10 out of 10, too. Like a while, while… a very long while tbh.

I have said lots of times it was Go Crazy for me. That song! And then learning about them and finding them absolutely adorkable.

        1

I look forward to your WWW posts because I like that you give a series of grades over the duration of a drama (which reflects a viewer’s experience of a show in a way that just one grade often fails to). I’m always then looking at your reviews for a drama that scores well so that I’ll know to check it out – I have yet to figure out how my tastes map onto yours so it’s almost like a game for me!

I think that because you have a very unique style and approach, you come across as quite mysterious (in a fun way, especially because I’m more of an oversharer who waffles and flip flops with my views!😅)! I hope that questions about your ‘why’ are based on that mystery-motivated curiosity, and that you can feel a bit like a db celebrity!

Fellow highly critical watcher who also always gets asked why she both watches so much she doesn’t like and also, why she writes so much about why she doesn’t like anything, when she doesn’t have to justify herself to anyone and yet still always feel the need to engage and explain, so, I can relate.

    7
    0

This is kinda sad because I’ve always thought of dramabeans as a peaceful place, so I’m really sorry that you’re getting those types of comments.
You’re rating the shows, not us, so I really have no idea what’s the deal about.
I have to admit that sometimes I get hurt and think “this show ain’t that trashy”, but I know that those are my personal feelings only because I’m enjoying the show and I’m sensitive as hell and I don’t want to feel like I’m watching a bad show even if it’s true. 😂 So I just shut up and keep reading the comments.

    5
    0

Hey Radily. I hope this wasn’t about my comment. The fact I said something similar to you, about being bored by the latest kdramas not too long ago, and that I would rate them even lower, seemed to be proof of my honesty kkk. That’s how I imagined but English is not my first language as you must have noticed so maybe something else made you doubt that? If it was about my post, I can guarantee it was an honest question.

If it was about the next user, I’d give them the benefit of doubt to be honest. Again there might be some hidden irony there that I’m not getting because of translation but I could not find anything in their comment that would prove that wasn’t also an honest question.

It’s even funny that it might have been about my comment since I’ve posted so many times here about users having the right to say anything about any drama because they could have any possible reason to keep interested and nobody should question that. I think one of those comments was even to someone talking about your comment, something about liking your rate posts.

    5

To be honest i have sometimes wondered before if you ever liked anything you watched, but then i stumbled on one of your explanations and dug through your wall (lol!) and found the posts that you liked something 🥳 So now whenever i see something rated below 3 i just smile to myself. I’m sure it takes a lot of thoughts coming up & posting your ratings consistently but if it’s something you enjoy please don’t let others faze you. I’m always in awe of beanies that think so critically and deep dive into dramas and while there’s me, brain practically turned off for that hour of drama-watching. If everyone is like-minded DB would be a very boring place!
