Beanie level: Entertainer-in-training

Thanks to everyone who recommended Gaus Electronics in the Year End Round Up! I just finished it today and LOVED it!

I almost didn’t watch this because I didn’t recognize Jackson in the thumbnail 😂

I know it’s way past the day we were supposed to post our favorite OSTs but I forgot I had a favorite OST so I’m posting mine now 😄
My favorite OST this year is from a show I didn’t even watch 😂 It is Dive Into You from Crazy Love sung by Jay B (of course 😄) I don’t normally listen to OSTs so I had kind of forgotten about this song until Jay B performed it at his online concert. It was so beautiful, I immediately fell in love with it.

Def (aka Jay B) released a new song! Why do I find his voice so mesmerizing? 💚
I hope he’s doing okay. I always worry when my boys release sad songs 💔

It makes me so happy to see not one, but TWO new thumbnails of Jinyoung’s handsome face 😍

The best gift I got this year was discovering that two of my boys from TheEastLight had redebuted as a duo and are happily making fun covers together.
Merry Christmas to all my beanie friends! I hope that there are lots of good dramas waiting for us in 2023!

When I first got into kdramas, I was constantly watching something new. Whether it was a classic kdrama I heard about from beanies or a currently airing drama, I was so busy watching new dramas I had no time to rewatch dramas I had already seen. I would sometimes see older beanies saying that they were rewatching an old drama and I couldnโ€™t understand why they would waste time watching something they had already seen when there were so many new dramas to watch. However, in the past few years, my perspective has changed for a few reasons.
AVAILABILITY: Even though there are so many dramas being produced, they are spread out over so many different platforms. I only subscribe to Viki and I refuse to subscribe to anything else so this limits the dramas I can watch. I donโ€™t even keep track of what dramas are coming soon since I donโ€™t want to get excited about a drama only to find out it is airing on Netflix or Disney+ and I canโ€™t watch it.
AMNESIA: Now that Iโ€™ve been watching dramas for over five years, I donโ€™t remember the details of every drama Iโ€™ve ever seen. Even major plot twists can be like new to me! Watching an old drama can be just as exciting as watching a new drama when you apparently have drama-related amnesia 😅
ASSURANCE: There is something comforting about watching a drama youโ€™ve seen before and knowing that it is going to have a happy ending. Or, even if the ending isnโ€™t the best, youโ€™ve already come to terms with that the first time and can enjoy the drama for what it does well.
Because I didnโ€™t watch many new dramas this year, I havenโ€™t been able to participate in the end of year roundup posts but I still want to recap my year in dramas with a summary of everything I did watch this year.
You can see from my experience which older dramas still hold up on a second (or third) viewing and which dramas donโ€™t stand the test of time!

    King 2 Hearts
I started the year by rewatching King 2 Hearts. The enemies to lovers romance, the spoiled crown prince becoming a mature king, the romance between the bodyguard and the princess were all as wonderful as I remembered. The one thing I dislike is the villain. Heโ€™s just plain weird.

    Devilish Joy
I started watching this one on a beanieโ€™s recommendation and while I enjoyed the first two episodes a lot, I eventually dropped it at episode 8 as I found one of the characters very annoying.

    Touch Your Heart
This drama isnโ€™t anything special but it does have a very cute romance and lots of quirky, memorable side characters which made for a fun rewatch. Yoo In Na and Lee Dong Wook make a cute couple with her as the spoiled actress and him as the serious lawyer.

Shopping King Louis (aka Shopaholic Louis)
This was my third time watching Shopping King Louis. I love Seo In Guk and Nam Ji Hyun together. The first twelve episodes are fantastic as both Louis and the viewer try to figure out how Louis ended up on the streets with amnesia. After the first twelve episodes though the show loses momentum and meanders to a happy ending. I still enjoy it every time though.

    Love and Wish (webdrama)
I only watched this because GOT7โ€™s Youngjae was starring in it. Despite loving Youngjae, the drama just wasnโ€™t good.

    1

    Pipeline (movie)
I checked this out because it had Seo In Guk and Lee Soo Hyuk in it. It had more swearing than I like but the twist ending was very exciting and obviously SIG and LSH were fantastic.

    Rooftop Prince
I had heard that this was a fun time-travel comedy and it lived up to those expectations. It had lots of comedic fish-out-of-water antics as the crown prince and three of his men time travel to the present. I should have done these write-ups as I watched the shows because I donโ€™t remember much else about this drama. I think it might have dragged towards the end and the romance wasnโ€™t very memorable.

    Flower Boy Next Door
I started rewatching this one but didnโ€™t ever quite finish it. Itโ€™s still cute but I just wasnโ€™t in the mood for it I guess.

    Are You Human Too?
I watched this when it first aired and decided to rewatch it since I remembered enjoying it. I love when one actor plays two different roles in the same show. Itโ€™s fun to watch Seo Kang Joon play both the cruel human and the gentle robot (those smiles always make my heart flutter). The plot is fast-paced and exciting although the ending is a bit illogical.

The Secret Life of My Secretary
This was another one that I watched when it first aired and had fond memories of. It was just as fun on the second watch. Cute romance, lots of comedy, and a very satisfying ending. Iโ€™ll definitely be rewatching it again in the future.

    Pinocchio
I first watched this show years ago when I got into kdramas because it was a classic according to beanies. I enjoyed it then but couldnโ€™t remember much about it (I didnโ€™t even remember why it was called Pinocchio!) so I decided it was time for a rewatch. I had forgotten how dark it was in parts (one of the supporting characters commits murder) but itโ€™s a classic story of fighting for truth and it has a bit of romance to sweeten the story.

    School 2017
I love Jang Dong Yoon and Kim Se Jeong so I decided to give this one a rewatch. Itโ€™s a fun story about the students standing up to the corruption in their school and developing a camaraderie with each other.

    King of High School
I love Seo In Guk (in case that wasnโ€™t already obvious). On rewatching this, the female lead was way more annoying than I had remembered but the story is fun and has very consistent pacing. Things I love: the grandfather, Lee Soo Hyuk and Seo In Gukโ€™s reluctant bromance, the romance (the kiss scenes are so cute), and the very satisfying ending. If you watch it, look for Shin Hye Sun as one of the office workers!

    Good Manager (Chief Kim)
This is one of those dramas that I always heard beanies say good things about so I decided to give it a try. The comedy is fun (Namgoong Min and Junho are hilarious together) but I found it dragging a little towards the end. Also, I would have preferred for there to be a little bit of romance between the female lead and Junho. It seemed like there were hints at times that they like each other but nothing ever happened.

    The Best Hit
I had actually heard bad things about this drama 😅 I remember beanies being disappointed with the ending when it aired so I had never watched it. I decided to check it out anyways for Yoon Shi Yoon and was pleasantly surprised. I liked the main couple and thought the ending was fine.

    3
    2

    Donโ€™t Call it Mystery (Jdrama)
I started this because it sounded like it was about a Sherlock-style hero. The first episode was fun with the main character being framed for murder and using logic and his memory to discover who the actual criminal was while still in police custody. After that though, the stories got too dark for me and I eventually dropped it.

    Fashion King (movie)
I watched this because I love Joo Won. I didnโ€™t really have any expectations going into it but I was still disappointed somehow.

    Dear Fair Lady Kong Shim
After seeing Namgoong Min in Chief Kim, I decided to check out his other shows and found this one. Itโ€™s a pretty typical romcom with a secret chaebol and all, but it was still fun.

    Stove League
I watched this for the first time this year on the recommendation of beanies. After seeing Namgoong Min in Chief Kim and Dear Fair Lady Kong Shim, I was expecting his role to be somewhat comedic. Instead, I think he only smiled once in the whole show. Each episode seemed like it focused on a different character. Interesting storylines would start but then get dropped. It would have been better if it had focused on few players and fleshed out their stories more. Also, show more baseball! For a show about baseball, there was a shocking lack of baseball scenes. I honestly gave up on this show around ep 12 and just watched the ending.

    Yumiโ€™s Cells 2
I enjoyed Yumiโ€™s Cells 1 and was looking forward to seeing Jinyoung go from the role of coworker to boyfriend in season 2. Jinyoung was adorable as Babi but his relationship with Yumi was not well written or satisfying. Iโ€™m still glad I watched it though if only because I got to see Jinyoung in sweet boyfriend mode.

    She Was Pretty
This is one of those classics that I heard about on DB and watched towards the beginning of my drama journey. Choi Siwon is hilarious here as the female leadโ€™s coworker and friend. It is a heartwarming drama with a happy ending as the female lead learns to accept her looks, gets her dream job, and gets the guy too.

    On the Verge of Insanity
I started this because I saw a lot of beanies saying it was one of their favorite dramas last year (2021). I got four episodes into it and got bored. I like my dramas to have romance in them or mystery/action and this one didnโ€™t seem like it was going to have either. Maybe I should go back to it sometime and give it another chance because I did like the main character.

    My Secret Terrius
This show is adorable! A spy starts protecting a young woman and her two kids after the womanโ€™s husband is murdered for witnessing an assassination. So Ji Sub as the tough spy looking after two little kids is a perfect recipe for lots of cute shenanigans.

    Queen for Seven Days
This is one of my favorite sageuks. The chemistry between Park Min Young and Yeon Woo Jin is superb and I LOVE Lee Dong Gunโ€™s performance as the king slowly losing his sanity. Even though he is crazy and will kill people at the drop of a hat, he still manages to be sympathetic.

    I Am Not a Robot
If you havenโ€™t seen I Am Not a Robot yet, stop reading this and go watch it. This was my third time watching it and it never gets old. Chae Soo Bin does an amazing job playing the robot, the human, and the human pretending to be the robot.

    1
    0

    Secret Garden
This was my third time watching this. I love the hilarious body-swap antics and the ending with the male lead being willing to sacrifice himself for the female lead but I always forget how awful and stalker-y the male lead is for the majority of the show.

    Juror 8 (movie)
This movie starring Park Hyung Sik is (very) loosely based on the first jury trial in Korea and is reminiscent of the classic, American film 12 Angry Men in which one jurorโ€™s doubts about the defendantโ€™s guilt is able to sway the other jurors to a not-guilty verdict. Very enjoyable.

    Love is for Suckers
I started watching this when I found out Choi Siwon was starring in it since Iโ€™ve loved him in other dramas but this show was disappointing. While I didnโ€™t dislike it as much as some beanies did, I agree with the general consensus that the best part was Chef John and Jiwanโ€™s romance.

    My Love from the Star
This was my first time rewatching My Love From the Star and it was even better than I had remembered. The episodes fly by because they are so exciting and action-packed. If you want a show about a handsome alien with superpowers, a superstar actress who is down on her luck, and a murderous chaebol, then this is the show for you. Romance, action, drama, comedyโ€ฆ What more could you ask for?

    Todayโ€™s Webtoon
I really shouldnโ€™t watch dramas just because I like the lead actor/actress since it seems like that has led me to watch some pretty bad dramas this year but I started watching this one for Kim Se Jeong. Iโ€™m not very interested in webtoons, the young, I find the formerly-abused webtoon artistโ€™s work creepy, and I just donโ€™t care that much about the characters for some reason. Also, I had to laugh when one of the PDs is telling his webtoon artist that her webtoon would benefit from having a romance in it. I was thinking โ€œYou know what else would benefit from a bit of romance? THIS SHOW!โ€. I havenโ€™t officially dropped it yet but I think Iโ€™m going to especially after hearing from beanies that there is no romance by the end either.

Would You Like a Cup of Coffee?
Iโ€™d heard that this drama was very calm and relaxing so I decided to check it out but, for me, it was calm and relaxing to the point of being boring. I dropped it.

    The Innocent Man
I saw a lot of beanies mention this one as their favorite Song Joong Ki drama in the recent Choose Your Favorite Song Joong Ki Drama post so I decided to check it out. Iโ€™m assuming those beanies havenโ€™t seen Descendants of the Sun because I donโ€™t see how they could choose this over DOTS when DOTS is so much more fun and exciting. Song Joong Ki is so sad and brooding in this one. I much prefer his fun, flirty, and heroic character in DOTS. I might stick around for a few more episodes but Iโ€™ve got a feeling this isnโ€™t my kind of drama.

King2Hearts rules! I used to rewatch it quite a bit but i tend to go for more recent dramas now. I think rewatching is like visiting an old friend – you wanna hang out but you want to do it comfortably and not have to think too much about whatโ€™s happening.

      3
      1

I love your recap! I agree that I didn’t know the appeal of rewatching dramas before this year when I suddenly decided it might actually be a BETTER idea to rewatch some old dramas. I wasn’t wrong in that given the crop we had for the past year.

What is funny is that though I also rewatched dramas, none of what you mentioned is actually the shows I rewatched! 😅

    1
    1

Which ones did you rewatch? Maybe I’ll rewatch those next year!

      1
      1

I’m not sure if our tastes in Kdramas are similar, but what I rewatched this year are Healer, StartUp, … and a Cdrama named Love between Fairy and Devil. I think I rewatched more than this but these are what popped up in my head.

        1
        1

I love Healer! The reason I didn’t rewatch it this year is because I rewatched it last year 😄 I’m thinking about rewatching it again in January though.
Start Up isn’t on Viki 😕 and I’m not really into cdramas…

If you were wondering how much I really love Jay B, according to Spotify Wrapped…
I was in the top 0.5% of Jay B listeners this year 😊💚
AND
My top three artists were Jay B, GOT7 (which Jay B is in), and Def. (which is Jay B’s pseudonym) 😄

    @isthatacorner do you use spotify?

    1

I feel so proud because according to Spotify the artists I listen the most are my favorite groups be even tho I listen 77 genres of music. I felt like a real ahgase/my day/inspirit. 💚

    2
    1

Congrats! It’s nice when Spotify confirms who our faves are 😄
      That’s a lot of genres!
Who is your GOT7 bias? I know you’ve probably told me but my memory is awful 🙈
Have you been following their solos?

      1
      1

I know! Spotify made us feel like good fans.

I change bias every two seconds tbh. Right now, double B is my guy.

I’ve tried. I’ve listened their title tracks but not all their albums.
I think the last album I listened was Young Jae’s Sugar.
I always watch the music videos but I never listen to the whole albums. I need to concentrate the first time I listen to them, so if I don’t have the time/energy I prefer to save them for later.

        1
        2

I’ve realized I don’t really like Mark and Jackson’s solo stuff so I haven’t been keeping up with their releases. Bambam and Youngjae’s songs are my style. Yugyeom and Jinyoung haven’t released much but I’ll definitely check their songs out. Jay B’s songs are my favorite (obviously). His album “Be Yourself” is really fun to listen to and his performances of the songs on his world tour are really fun to watch. I’m hoping he’ll come to the US so I can see him perform in person. So far, he’s toured/announced tour dates in Asia, South America, Mexico, and Europe. What about the US and Canada??? He needs to come visit us here.

          1
          2

I loved go UP, so I’m sure I’m going to enjoy the rest of the songs.

I like Mark’s songs that are sad and soft 🤣. And I enjoy practically everything Sunie releases.

I’m sure he’ll go to North America soon. Don’t worry, be patient 😉

            1
            0

I’m glad you like Mark and Jackson’s songs! Between us we’ll be supporting all our boys 💚
When you listen to Jay B’s album, let me know! I love all the songs but my favorite is Fountain of Youth.

            1
            0

Oh, I am the opposite of you, I think! I rarely watch the videos. I have to actually *watch* the videos so I normally put the album on when I’m at work and bop along as I’m doing other things. The videos take too much concentration! I was doing better at watching Jackson’s videos since I like him so much but….honestly….I’m kinda sick of him? He’s EVERYWHERE. And it doesn’t help that I don’t really like the Magic Man album.
I know that Jackson works his ass off (literally. I watched an insta live a few weeks ago of him running on a treadmill) but looking at the videos from his tour versus what I saw when I watched Marks concert I felt so bad for Mark. Jackson is in all of these arenas and Mark was in like a baby venue. I’m sure he chose it but still….
I don’t listen to the other boys as much as I should. When their songs pop up in a playlist I’m always hyped up and excited for them but I never seek them out. I need to be a better fan, dang it!

          1
          2

Jackson’s music seems darker lately. I really liked his style a year or two ago. Pretty Please, LMLY, 100 Ways, Walking, etc were all really good, fun songs. I didn’t even listen to Magic Man though because I didn’t like Blow and the album art was too scary 🙈 I just saw Jackson released a new mv yesterday and I was going to watch it but the thumbnail looks scary so I decided not to watch it 💔 I want to support all my boys but I’m not going to listen to music I don’t like just to be a good fan. They all have different styles and fortunately ahgases have a wide variety of music tastes so there’s fans who enjoy each of their styles.
Mark only just started his solo career so I think it’s natural that he’s performing in smaller venues for now. Jackson has been solo for five years now. In another five years, Mark will probably be performing in much larger venues too.

            1
            0

I agree that he’s everywhere. I heard Pretty Please on a store in my country. THAT SAYS A LOT.
            Really proud of our boy.

I haven’t heard any of the new albums, I really need to be a better fan. :c

Kingdom of Love (the dating show in Love is For Suckers) seems so boring. The couples were pretty much determined after one or two episodes and they never mix up the couples. Also, the dates (aside from the haunted house) are pretty boring. Considering Kang Chaeri is supposed to be this amazing PD who produces really exciting shows this seems odd.
If I were making Kingdom of Love, this is what I would do.
Episode 1: Have the cast play some icebreaker games. Have solo interviews with the cast about why they decided to come on the show/what their background is.
Episode 2: The cast are paired up randomly and have to compete for money to go on a date with. The amounts could range from $10 to $10,000.
Episode 3: The cast are paired up randomly and have to compete for different dates (Amusement park, concert, nice dinner, beach day, hiking).
Episode 4: Each cast member writes down his or her ideal date and the men decide what date they want to go on (without knowing who they will be going with).
Episode 5: Same thing but in reverse. The woman choose from the men\’s ideal dates and do that date with that man.
Episode 6: They\’re all paired up with someone they haven\’t gone out with yet and go on a date.
Episode 7: The men compete to go on a date with the lady of their choosing.
Episode 8: The women compete to go on a date with the man of their choosing.
Episode 9: Final selections are made

I think this would give all of them a chance to get to know each other better and would be more interesting for the viewers to watch since you\’re not constantly seeing the same pairings.

15

I vaguely remember the production staff commenting on that with frustration in show.
Itโ€™s interesting though, Iโ€™ve been watching a couple of real Korean dating shows (Singles Inferno and Pink Lie) and it seems like you really need to engineer the partner switching. basically everyone on Singles Inferno stuck to their first date. Pink Lie has a lot more manufactured going on dates with multiple people but it still kind of feels like people stick to what they know.

    2
    1

I think you’re right about them mentioning it in the show. You’d think they’d do more to mix up the couples though since they’re running the show.
I haven’t ever watched a Korean reality dating show so I have no idea how they actually work 😅 I hope they’re more exciting than Kingdom of Love though.

      0
      1

I have found them entertaining but that might be because they were a complete novelty to me 😅 compared to what you hear about western shows eg Love Island (Iโ€™ve never seen it), they seem extremely tame โ€ฆ. maybe some daring hand holding or something. Iโ€™m assuming this is down to cultural differences in whatโ€™s acceptable.

        0
        1

I’m pretty sure that people don’t watch it for the couples… But for the “in between” : dispute, humiliation, sex, etc…

    1
    1

    OMG yes!
Kingdom of love was boring as hell.
Most of the dating shows I’ve watch pretend to be more “calm” (they can’t touch -hug, kiss, etc- or confess) but they’re still fun.

This one is supposed to be some crazy stuff because they can do anything but it was boring as hell.

You can always see different kind of relationships, between the couples and between the participants in general. And that’s nice. There’s always the funny guy, the chill girl, the cute girl. The two guy fighting for one girl are always ridiculous (they got that right) and the two girls that are friends but they like the same guy and have a honest talk.

And yes, the production tries to make the dates random a few times. And that’s nice because you even get to see them as friends giving each other advices and acting silly (or sometimes a new spark happens).

    2
    1

That sounds way better than Kingdom of Love.

      1
      1

        Anything is better than KOL.
My favorite is EXchange (or Transit Love). It felt like a drama tbh. I cried and smiled lot (I also rolled my eyes of course).
I haven’t watched season 2 tho (Bambam is a host in this new season btw).

        1
        1

I heard about Season 2 of that because of Bambam. Where do you watch it?

          2

            Illegally tbh.
I started clean like a good bean watching Heart Signal on Viki and Single’s Inferno on Netflix but then I searched for more shows and watched a few in the dark side.

            0

Well, bless you for caring enough about LiS to think of ways to fix it. Iโ€™m so OVER a show that doesnโ€™t have a security detail on hand and drags us through that idiotic guy w the knife thing. Even that plot line managed to be boring.

    2
    1

It was just really bugging me, how boring Kingdom of Love is. Especially since we saw that scene from season 1 where the two ladies were having a catfight in a pool. That seems more like what I would expect from a Kang Chae Ri show.

      2
      1

I can\’t believe Jang Goon cheated on Soo Mi with Chae Ri. He\’s the one who deserved to have the cake smashed in his face, not hockey dude.

4
0

I can\’t believe Ji Wan said yes to Joon Ho 💔 I was hoping she\’d fling the cake into the pool or something and reject that jerk.

2
7

I have no idea why Ji Wan acts like she owes that dude something. He has been treating her like crap and they all know he’s a fraud.
He was super rude and gross talking about her past and he almost threw her infront of a guy with a knife.

It makes no sense. We all know she’s nice but not stupid, she should’ve told him to get lost years ago.

    2
    1

I wanted her to smash that cake to that annoying face! I can’t believe she feels like she had to say yes to him!? He does not deserve her. That relationship will turn abusive asap.

    2
    1

I’m hoping that he will just dump her. We know he’s just been using her for the show. Now that it’s over, I would expect him to dump her immediately.

That would be the best decision he will make. But he may choose to milk the KOL relationship as much as he can considering Ji Wan is a successful webtoon artist.

I hope not. I hope he comes up with some excuse to break up and moves on. She deserves so much better. If she doesn’t get a happy ending, I’ll be so mad.

Absolutely. I want her to move on to someone better and get her own happy ending.

First of all. They were TERRIBLE at that game. It was hilarious. It was interesting to hear Eric and Jackson talk about the pressure of being a brand. If they stop working for whatever reason how many lives is it going to effect?

The part that really got to me was the part where Jackson talked about leaving the light on so it will be there to greet him when he comes home 😭😭😭 He needs to get married soon so he has more than just a light to welcome him home.
They were awful at that game but it seems so confusing. Also, I think Eric called it “The Idiot Game” but I’m not sure if you’re supposed to be an idiot if you’re good at it or if you’re bad at it 😄 I’m not sure if this was banned in the rules but I would have just said any number greater than five. That way I wouldn’t have to worry about how many fingers I held up 😂

He said he wants to be married in the next 10 years. Hopefully he’ll slow down soon and start looking. That was a sad story. It was also sad when he said he doesn’t have anyone there for him. His parents used to be his shoulder but he’s an adult and taking care of them now. And when he said he only had what? 1 or 2 or 2-3 ride or dies in his life. Like I know I only have 1 or 2 ride or dies in my life but I’m not an internationally known super star who’s known for being charismatic and friendly. Talk about being in a crowded room and feeling all alone.

I was thinking he should have at least six “ride or dies”. What about GOT7???

That was my first thought too! Or at least, AT LEAST Jinyoung and Mark! They have both said that they have the kind of friendship with Jackson that will last the rest of their lives. At the time I was like….so y’all aren’t going to be friends with the other 5 forever? But I realize I have a deep naive streak. Not everyone can be the BSB and still perform and be best friends with each other (except Brian….) after 30 years. Is it naive to believe them all of the times they have claimed they are close? Was it all a lie? If it was a lie why are they still constantly popping up in each other’s feeds, hanging out? I can’t handle this.

Yeah, in the Friendship Test video Jackson said he thought he’d still be friends with Jinyoung in fifty years. And I think Jackson (or Jinyoung) said that when Jackson was having a hard time he would call Jinyoung and they would go to the Jjimjilbang together.
I wonder if Bambam will clip that part, put it in their group chat and be like which two of us do you consider to be your “ride or dies” cause I thought we all were? 😂
