Beanie level: Rooftop room dweller

The first Watch and Discuss K drama club session took place this evening. It was so lovely to meet fellow beanies on Zoom and discuss two really interesting short dramas.

The next session is on 3rd January 7 p.m. GMT London. We will be watching The Avengers Social Club (2017) it has 12 episodes and is available on YouTube.

This is a found family/friendship slice of life comedy featuring strong women from different parts of society who form a revenge club. They are joined by one of the group members teenage step son. The drama is based on a webtoon and covers some serious themes of domestic violence, infidelity and poor parenting but manages to do so in a way that has the club members succeed in finding themselves and moving on from their troubles.

If this time suits you and you would like the opportunity to have a focused discussion about Korean dramas with other Beanies in a safe friendly club we would love to have you join us (see post below for contact details).

I couldn’t meet you this time but I hope I can meet you next once and I haven’t watched TASC that has been forever in my to watch list.

Brilliant. It will be lovely to have you join us. There are a couple of others who couldn’t make today but are aiming for the January meet up. It is hard to find dramas that we haven’t all seen but there are some popular mentions on the long watchlist that we are looking forward to add to the list.

Thank you for co facilitating. We definitely have the beginnings of the When the Weather is Fine book club vibe 🥰

It sounds very fun. I’m totally the wrong time zone (I think that works out to about 8am Jan 4 for me) and I’ll also be away on summer holidays but I’ll keep an eye out for future discussions!

Oh wow that will be a great start/finish to the year. I hope you have a wonderful time on your holiday😊. The WDKD club is going to be held the 4th Tuesday of the month as a rule with other dates according to facilitator availability. We would love to see you there but totally understand timing will make this difficult.

People can join just to listen? 😆 Or everyone has to talk and show their face?

It’s a small group, we want it to be a place where club members feel safe so confident or shy everyone feels able to chat. We all have cameras on and chat either via the chat or verbally. We give a pass to those who are not confident with their English but want the majority to come to discuss the dramas since we don’t have people in real life to share our thoughts with this is the place we can. We have some prompt questions sent out with the drama title to help shape the discussions; Characters we relate to, messages from the writer, whether the OST helps the storytelling, things we would change etc. we hope people will come see if it’s a place they want to be and then in a few months when we have our core club members it will become a closed group. Then club members might come on the months they didn’t get to watch the drama but just want to spend some time with the club members who did.

I love this little show/commercial. I did a group watch back in the day on Rabbit with several other Beanies. Rabbit is no more sadly. But glad the torch is being passed.

The first watch and discuss is: Everything and Nothing 2019 (4 episodes)
This short, coming-of-age drama tells the story of two ordinary seventeen-year-olds who find common ground while at the same stage in life. As they pursue their dreams, and decide what they want out of life, they suffer hardships and setbacks that cause them to grow. This is the Dramabeans summary and there are two reviews by beanies.

This drama has warnings of dark themes and shows the bleakness of life for the main leads so may be triggering for anyone going through or has unresolved trauma around relationship breakdowns. PG -17

After reading your assessment of Everything and Nothing, I would be having second thoughts on watching it. Sounds depressing. Watching as a group then discussing it after could work.

I wanted to take the idea of a book club where there are multiple elements to a novel into play in the drama world. The cultural stories about expectations of parents during the child/adult transition process has come up in the backstory of so many leads and side characters of the popular dramas like Our beloved Summer, A moment of 18 etc. that I thought this was likely to be an interesting watch that would bring up some interesting discussion points. It’s short which was important as a first watch as we all have different commitments and we wanted to ensure that people will have a realistic chance of finishing by the time we meet to discuss. For future watches, group members will bring their suggestions so we can have some ideas for the next few sessions when we will have longer ones to watch. There are so many dramas that are likely to have been seen already by the club members and we are likely to have very different tastes so we are going to have to be creative with our list to find quality, interesting dramas to watch. The other issue will be ones that are easily accessible as people have different platforms they prefer to subscribe to.

I hope if you decide not to join on this one that you are able to send a list of dramas and genres that you like so we can find one that is more to your taste. Are you going to be able to join our group time zone wise? Are you one of the Australian/New Zealand time zone people? We are looking at the option of having regional clubs to meet people’s time zones needs.

Watch and Discuss Korean Drama Club Post
The WD Korean Drama club will be held live on Zoom once a month on a Tuesday 7-8 p.m. (London time zone). If you are interested in the watch and discuss club please reply to this post so we can tag you in to future posts. Please also add your preference for genres and the names of dramas you think would be interesting to add to the watchlist. We will of course need to ensure that they are available on the legal sites universally.

The first watch and discuss will be on 22nd November. Initially we thought the 4th Tuesday of the month would be our regular slot however this may need to be swapped some months due to a holiday season or other commitments of the hosts. We will post the dates and their associated dramas for the first few months so we can all plan accordingly. Due to the Christmas break we will restart in January.

We will email the Zoom link to those signing up for that month so if you are interested please send an email including your name as it will appear in the Zoom waiting room and your Dramabeans name to: tessa@peaceintheseat.co.uk

Zoom watching kdramas? Brilliant, reply 1988! Our time difference will probably prevent me from being able to participate most months, but if I can ever coordinate my schedule to accommodate the zoom meet, I’d love to join in! 👏🏻

This is so exciting, as the aim is to get something started and expand from there. I am sure we could set up multiple discussion sessions to accommodate time zones. It just needs us to reach out to find who is in our time zone. Maybe, you could be a host for your region, I am sure you could easily find a co host. We could share the dramas we want to watch each month and then chose the WD group that suits our time zone. This group of K drama fans is huge it’s just most people don’t comment but within the lurkers there must be loads who would be up for a focused chat once a month to discuss a drama that a group of fellow beanies watched.

We will also have a WhatsApp group running alongside to provide an opportunity to add our feedback during the month (we would put in measures to avoid spoilers) so maybe that would be something all time zone watchers could join even if the UK region Zoom discussion is not at a convenient time the alternative discussion groups would benefit from the internationally shared comments even if there are small numbers in the actual Zoom discussions. 😊
Happy to chat off line if you are interested it would be great if all the region hosts could support each other.

So, it’s like a book club in that each person watches an episode (or a month’s worth of episodes if zoom meet-ups are monthly) on their own, then we discuss in RT as the kdrama unfolds, correct?

        2
        1

Yes that’s it exactly. That’s why in the Open thread post I referred to the book club in the drama I will come to you when the weather is fine as they had so much fun reviewing the book choices. The watch together in real time is available on Viki as a watch party and I think would be difficult for us to coordinate an equivalent event as a weekly watch.I used to do that back in the day chatting with a friend during the ad breaks of ER! We thought this monthly meet up was the best solution for those of us watching dramas in isolation and wanting to discuss in a conversation and in more detail than you can in the comments section of a weecap post.

I don’t know if this kind of hijacks your idea, or is compatible with it, but there is already a Beanie discord server which maybe could be coordinated in this if you wanted or if it would work?
        Not sure.

        1
        2

Oh that sounds worth looking into we wanted to have a chance to discuss the dramas on Zoom so we could talk in person in a small localish group and then we could organise occasional in person meet ups. As we have so many different time zones on here and the collective is huge I was hoping other people would be inspired to set up something similar in their areas so there would be multiple variations on a theme. Different genres tastes could be catered for and the groups could cover a fairly large area according to time zone and then people could decide how far they were willing to travel to see people off screen.
How do you access the DB discord server?

    @laeonni
Hi if you want to join us see above for the email to send me your contact details so I can send you the Zoom link. The dramas we are discussing this month are listed in posts above they are both short so if you have not seen them you should be able to watch to catch up before the first meeting. If you can’t do both one is only 30 minutes so hopefully you could catch that one. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for telling me this cos i haven’t been so active on db lately
I just saw the schedule and i’m not sure if i can join you most of the time since 7 p.m for you is very early morning for me but i’ll join whenever i can. I’ll send you an email soon.
But is it okay if i don’t talk that much? I’m very shy irl and my reason to join is because i want to hear you guys talk😂

I’m not sure about watching Everything and Nothing since my mental state still can’t handle something so dark besides Through the Darkness for now. But Two Lights: Relumino has been on my watchlist for months and i’m excited to finally have a reason to watch it!

      1
      1

Yes we are going to discuss as a group what we do re the balance of talking and listening members so everyone feels comfortable. It’s going to be a small group and hopefully we will get to know and trust each other and choose content that will lead to interesting discussions. We don’t want it to be like a podcast with a clear distinction between presenters and audience. Most of us want the chance to share our random thoughts on the dramas we watch in a two way real time conversation and as we don’t have friends and family locally who share this interest we created a place to do that. We have some set questions to think about so we have prompts for the conversation about the story themes as we want it to be deeper than acting skills or appearance.

We are unlikely to have dark themed content as a rule. We will always have trigger warnings if the themes are well advertised but we know that is not always possible as too many times we have been caught out by random darkness thrown in to what we assumed was a light low key story.

I appreciate what you guys are trying to do, sounds fun! I also don’t have any friends or family who watch kdramas so i’m very happy to have dramabeans and discord as places to share. I did participate in live watch several times with other beanies but i rarely participate in deeper discussions. Hopefully by joining zoom discussion, i can overcome my shyness. I’ll see if my schedule fits and i’ll email you

If you are interested in a weekly discussion about Three brave siblings we could have the equivalent of a drama hangout on here adding comments as we want. It would allow more space for discussion as the the weekly what we are watching is too late with limited scope for finding fellow watchers and maintaining a thread when I found myself commenting on the same issue in two places this week I thought this may be a better option. I also realise with busyness this may not be something of interest so won’t be offended if there is tumbleweed rolling in the replies section to this post 😊

Ok great, see you in here after I have seen this week’s episodes. I tend to binge watch on a Monday. It’s ok to add your comments whenever as I won’t read them until after I have watched it so no worries about spoilers for me or anyone else as we will all be intentional about when we visit the post.

I like this idea! I’ll be back after watching today’s episode (even tho I have enough to say about what happened yesterday).

    1

Ok I have watched both episodes and my first thoughts are weekenders always go to extremes in the funny or sad elements but its watchable for now.

I am glad that they are all single now and so any decisions they make going forward will be intentional. I can’t believe Sorim’s ex fiancé was using her sister as the excuse for the break up he was proper cold telling everyone but her and it looked like he was being cheap to the end and telling the bar owner she would cover the bill.

I thought the whole paternity test results explanation was too ridiculous to be true and couldnt understand why he was determined to keep the truth hidden and yet had not thought to keep it somewhere securely. What are your theories on the story behind it? I am not sure what would be grounds for extortion and the fear that Soobin needs to be out of the country to be protected from the birth secret. It does at least explain why they are always in need of money and feeling entitled to sponge of the rich relatives.

I am glad that the Taejoo’s mum finally accepted that she was partly to blame for the Taejoo’s sense of isolation growing up and that Taejoo needed to see her fight for her rather than against her in order for them to become closer. I loved that they all rallied round and stayed in her dump with her as she was not ready to leave with them.

I am glad the Uncle storyline is cleared up now so we can move on to the next drama of the mystery of the actor turned prosecutor and whether he is trying to get his own back on Sangjoon by duping his sister into thinking they are in a serious relationship. It also makes sense of his interest in the script.

    0

    Okay, I’m finally here.
Did you watch last week episodes?
The maknae is actually doing justice to the title of the show.
I was scared they would try to draw his love line with the ML’s sister but it’s actually the aunt! I like her, so everything is fine.
I’m also enjoying the middle child’s love line. That ahjussi is cute.
I’m 100% sure the girl isn’t his daughter but they will break up/stop seeing each other because of her.

Sang Joon and his family are still the worst but I don’t feel bad for Tae Joo anymore. I’m skipping all the leads’ scenes.

    1
    1

      Hey
I was desperate to talk about this drama and thought I was on my own so I am glad that you are enjoying it too 😊

Taejoo’s brother’s love line; I like the fact they brought in the previous contact and interest in the aunt as that makes far more sense than they randomly meet and make a connection with such a big age difference. I actually think that also explains why he would not have been that interested in the previous fiancée and was unaffected by their break up as she has similar childish tendencies to the ML sister when she stops putting on the dutiful daughter/granddaughter act. Personally, I am not sure why she didn’t just stick with the personal trainer and cut her loses as she clearly wasn’t getting all she needed from the relationship to stick with a monogamous relationship with the Taejoo’s brother. I also think if the aunt and Taejoo’s brother do marry the Sangjoon’s mum and sister will have to fix up as the aunt and grandmother are nice people and won’t allow them to continue behaving so unreasonably and neither will her brother allow them to behave in that way towards him or his sister.

I do like the CEO and the couple have a lot in common, he would treat her well and he can see that she is genuinely not about money and status unlike her ex so he would appreciate that in her. However, the age difference is a stumbling block for me when he has a daughter of a similar age. I think she is his daughter and he has always been a great dad to her hence her choosing him over her mum who is not a committed person. I don’t get why the CEO would consider a new partner in his daughter’s age range as I am sure he would not accept that for his daughter. I guess they are showing that he is not normally like that by showing him as a long term solid friend to the aunt and a good father. I love that the CEO is going to give the ex a proper lesson which will expose him as a fraud only interested in money and status but his daughter is going to be really upset as she seems to have genuinely fallen for him.

The ML’s sister has been an annoyance because it’s ridiculous that she is pampered to when she is so rude and immature so I am pleased that people have started to hold her to account and want her to grow up as no man is going to want a pathetic child like her as a life time partner. It seems like there is a trait to spoil one of the children so they never grow to take responsibility for their actions as Sangjoon’s grandmother did this with her son and that’s why she is now living with both her daughters while he throws her money away.

What’s your theory on the parentage of the nephew and his connection to the ML’s family? I think he is a child born out of wedlock from someone in the family and they are taking responsibility for him by keeping him in the family but who the parents are I don’t know. I also think the cousin’s story was an interesting one as he seems to have creamed off some of the money before passing it the parent.

      1
      1

        1. I actually thought they were going to meet because of her mom (grandma). I thought one day grandma was going to tell her to go to the clinic with her and they were going to experience some nice cliches and fall in love. 😆

I agree about the fiance. She’s the total opposite to the auntie, that wouldn’t work.

If auntie and maknae get married, Tae Joo and Sang Joo wouldn’t. There’s no way his manager, mom, etc would let him get married to the noona of his new uncle that’s like 5 years older than him that’s a total scandal. 😂 I’m thinking more that TJ and SJ will marry first and to save SJ’s image, auntie will play noble idiocy and will break up with maknae. I think they’ll be the last couple to get married (if they actually get married).
No, wait. Maybe you’re prediction is correct, but if it is then TJ and SJ are breaking up for a long time… They’ll get together in episode 49.

        2. I love that couple. I kept watching the show for them (now is for them and our new couple). They’re perfect for each other.

If it was a regular show I would think “she doesn’t know, right?” meant his daughter doesn’t know the mother cheated on him or something. But since this is a weekender, I’m going big 😂 I think they’re not related by blood.

I thought the daughter was closer to the maknae’s age or even younger. She gives me 20 something vibes.
I don’t remember if they gave ages, but from KSE’s real age, I’m guessing her character most be 33 or 34 so I don’t have a problem with it.
And I think he wouldn’t let his daughter date an older man because she seems kind of naive, tbh. Pilates is all grown up.

        3. Everytime I see this actress in LifS I roll my eyes, it’s so sad since that character has done nothing wrong. LOL

        4. That kid… He’s obviously a time bomb, but I have zero theories. I don’t know if we still are waiting for more characters to appear, if we have too little information or if I have skipped too much. 🤣
Nope. I think I’ve skipped too much because I have no idea what cousin you’re talking about. 🤦‍♀️😆

        1
        2

There are two boys who are both lovely even though their photographer dad and thief from the cafe mum are not nice people. I think it’s the youngest boy who has been brought into the family but they claimed him as birth child. He is the child that was part of the DNA test that Sangjoon found shoved in a book weeks ago but they only thought to burn it this week! Sangjoon’s mum was involved in the process and probably made them have him as a way to repay her for adopting the photographer into the family. Did you watch the intro process where the photographer was talking to Taejoo about how he came to be a part of the family but was suggesting she ran away to find a nice family as they are not that family considering she already had drama with her step grandmother.

          1
          1

Oh, yeah. My bad. The cousin is the photographer.

Yes, I remember that conversation. That’s probably the only thing he said in the whole show that’s true 🤣
I don’t like that guy, and I don’t trust him at all. The way he said that if SJ’s sister is pregnant they can just say the baby is from his wife, was really disturbing.

About the kid… At the beginning I thought he was SJ’s kid. My theory was that they were lying to SJ to protect his career.
            But I’m not sure anymore.
And there’s no other dude in the show that could have a lost son, tbh. So I think there’s a big missing piece of the puzzle.

            1
            0

Yes, they keep hinting so I wonder if the older brother has suspected something but loves him as a brother and doesn’t want him to know because he lied and kept the evidence hidden from his brother. I also noticed the photographer has been asking for money from early in the show to send the boys abroad and when that scheme didn’t work suddenly a letter arrived so he could be the one sending the letter because how come he has money now to buy things? I suspect he siphoned off some money before sending it on if there is a real person threatening them. If they know how to send money to them why don’t they make contact and do something legal to take their power away, like signing a contract?

          1
          5

Do you have a new theory? After yesterday’s episode I’m super confused. I need to stop ff so much, but I can’t stand these people LOL.

The thing is that one of the kids (Seung Chon? Won? Idk) was listening to their conversation (cousin and his wife) and he came to the conclusion he was Sang Joon’s son and his brother was Sang Joo’s mom’ son?
The cousin and his wife told him he was wrong but I think they were a little scared. Something’s fishy.

            1
            0

@enriquequierecagar yes they are all making it look like it’s SJ’s son even when he rang to ask directly but that’s too obvious. Why they want both of their children to live away from them I don’t know. I do know studying abroad is a sign of status due to the cost and improved language acquisition. The more I see the photographer the more he makes me suspicious. I think he is the one bringing in the letters and threats as a money making scheme. I will go really random but it could be someone he is close to like his sister’s child who was a minor or needed to be childless for marriage/her career so he made her pretend to be pregnant from SJ who was drunk and passed out so they staged a photo of the two of them in bed. He pretended to use SJ’s DNA but it was just his sister’s and the real dad’s. SJ is a heavy sleeper he didn’t wake up when all the manager and crew turned up so maybe they added the whole sleep over fiasco just to show us that.🤣 I bet its going to be something completely different.

            0
            0

@enriquequierecagar I forgot to say SJ’s sister’s character is ridiculous for a woman of that age to act like a teen at home is one thing but in the public arena no one is tolerating that. How can she get in the house without them letting her in so they would have told her he wasn’t there at that point. But for her to come in shouting no greeting to three elders was just plain rude and I can’t believe they didn’t dress her down immediately especially the grandmother.

            0
            0

@enriquequierecagar I am so glad they got married as at least now they can remind the family that they are adults and no one can not dictate to them and play such childish games.
The brother’s proposal- what was that? ‘She kissed me she must love me too! Yes let’s put this unrequited love to bed and just fast forward to happy ever after’😬 Now he is going to have to work twice as hard to get her back to feeling comfortable to admit it was not a mistake and she likes him too.

            1
            0

Tbh, I don’t have faith in the parents.
Well, Tae Joo’s family only wanted to protect her from psycho in-laws but she already got married so I guess they’ll just shut up or something.
But SJ’s mom always playing the victim, manipulating people emotionally and being all passive-agressive and two faced, is only getting started. And let’s not talk about the sister.
Now that their married they can make TJ do crazy stuff saying is for tradition or something and that it is her duty as daughter in law. Just like the hanbok thing.
Maybe TJ will control the sister when no one’s watching, but the mother… Nope. She can’t.

            2. Hell, yeah. That wasn’t bold, that was stupid. Why would he proposed to someone that can’t even hear their names out loud? She literally calls him kid or med student and freaks out when he calls her by her name. 🤦‍♀️

Seasons of Blossom webtoon season 4 has just released it’s first episode.

As requested by @mellowarmadillo these are the webtoons I have been able to read and enjoy. I started The Golden Spoon and See you in my 19th Life but the thriller element was too much for me.

Thank you so much, @reply1988! I’m excited to give these a go! 🤓

    1

Let me know how you get on. Are you watching Seasons of blossom? If so because of the way they have done the drama if you read the webtoon you will get spoilers on one part from the webtoon and another from the drama!

      1
      1

It’s on my list to check out! Thank you for the spoiler warning – I actually love spoilers.😁

I’m not watching anything at the moment (other than Young Actors’ Retreat…very slowly, to make it last), so I may give Seasons of Blossom a try. But someone recommended Ghost Doctor yesterday, so I might go with that instead. Just not sure what I fancy at the moment…🤔 I *think* I want something light and breezy, but then I also want a good emotionally cathartic watch… decisions, decisions!😅

        1
        2

Ghost doctor is good too they are very different dramas. One is fantasy power games in medical setting and the other school slice of life coming of age drama so depends what you are in the mood for. I liked them both

@reply1988 – that’s an impressive list – I look forward to hearing which of those you recommend! And I hope you enjoy Someday or One Day!💗 It stole my heart and hasn’t given it back yet!

            1
            0

I nearly dropped Someday or one day as the theme tune was played way too many times and I was only at episode 3 but then the ending and preview seriously took it to another level of intrigue and I was in.

          1
          1

Yayyy! It took me a couple of episodes too, but I had a similar experience – the way the story unfolded just completely caught me by surprise and trapped me! The show may seem unremarkable and a bit underwhelming at first, but then it does a stealth takeover and makes you stay.🥷

I grew to love the music by the end…I hope you find the same!

At the risk of sounding like a dill, please what is a webtoon? I’ve heard of cartoons, but not webtoons.

    1
    1

I am an Ajumma so i just google for a translation and then use the terms as if I am a pro🤣 It is an online comic with weekly or daily releases. If you want to know more the recently finished airing Today’s webtoon was all about the behind the scenes of producing them.

I am loving this one it’s the by same artist who wrote Yumi’s cells, the characters work at Woong’s company so he makes random appearances.

Really enjoyed this one waiting for the fourth and final instalment to come out. Drama is doing a great job although it has made some changes.

Just started this one when I heard it was going to be a drama with the same name.

I have completed the webtoon and now I am really looking forward to seeing how this is brought alive in the drama. The writer has two webtoons being made into dramas so must be very happy. I wonder what it feels like watching a version of your story on the screen changed to meet the expectations of a different platform.

The Package is a 2017 slice of life rom com:
A group of strangers spend two weeks travelling around France. I absolutely loved watching the character’s stories unfold. The hymn sung by the boys choir is perfect background mood music for the amazing Ariel shots of the gorgeous historical sites. It is my favourite slow paced drama so far and that is saying something as I didn’t think anything could beat: Would you like a cup of coffee?

The Package is what I call a good fill-the-slump drama. I only watched it earlier this year but was surprised at how much I enjoy it. No villains but ordinary folks wanting something out of this travel package.

I am so grateful to the beanies who yet again recommended something I would never have found otherwise as it’s not come up on my previous searches on Viki. It really is a hidden gem and I hope more people get to hear about and watch it. Yes I am beginning to see trends in drama eras and thankfully there were a batch of romance/slice of life dramas 2014-2017 that are exactly my style I just need to find them.

It’s been in my Plan to watch list for some months. I noticed that it had quite high grade in Drama Beans and I added it to my list because I usually agree with beanies favorite dramas and this group has helped me to find hidden gems.

I liked this one, thanks for recommending it @reply1988! France itself was my favorite “character”. I’ve been there twice, and am intermediate/conversational in the language so it was super fun to see familiar places plus practice my French and very beginner Korean languages. The individual stories kept my interest, the humor was fun. I think my least favorite pair was the lead couple, their story was nice but I didn’t feel their connection somehow. Overall a feel-good, slow-paced, character-driven drama and I enjoyed it. Merci! 😊🇫🇷

Sleepeeer hit discussion

13

I’m sorry to butt into this discussion as I’m not watching yet, but I was wondering: is there a love line in this?

    1
    3

Two episodes left hard to tell but it is hinted at. They don’t make it so blatant as K version. By the way everyone is welcome so feel free to comment. We just took it here so it didn’t add spoilers for anyone planning to watch and it’s not relevant to the main Today’s webtoon recap.

      0
      0

Having read your posts I am thinking any love line being left this late is likely to be so minor a storyline if you are looking for a romance plot this ain’t going to be the show for you! I can feed back properly after the show finishes if you like.

I really enjoyed this version of the drama it was the right length, and their representation of the artist and PD struggles and the infrastructure around them was really interesting. The fact they had a regular bar meant the bartender got involved in the conversations like she was a member of the team too. I didn’t like the OST way too rocky for me. I was therefore shocked to hear it playing in my head at one point when watching the Korean version and I couldn’t hear the soft music clearly so had filled in what I assumed was playing🤣

I quite liked watching both versions alongside each other and deciding which of the shared elements worked better and I was surprised that I actually preferred a few scenes, and portrayals of the characters in the Japanese version over the Korean version. Some was the look of the character like the artist’s annoying girlfriend, others was the interaction, I particularly liked the Newbie and Sunbae purely platonic relationship.

    1
    0

I am on 8th episode. And so far I liked it better than the K version. No PPL bombardment, more optimistic/idealistic story, (way too) less drama compared to the K version. And why I did not check the artists, I was not prepared to see Kentaro Sakaguchi! (My heart did a double take).

More details about various character will soon start making it’s way once I am done with the remaining two episodes (with spoiler alerts).

(@reply1988 my dinner today is cancelled and I am doing nothing but watching Sleeper Hit since then)

    1

Looking forward to your feedback. I am quite disappointed with the Korean version stretching out the sister storyline how is it still waiting to be concluded when we are now over half way through the drama. It feels like they are stringing us along as it’s unnecessary and disrespectful to just assume we will be happy to wait for the big reveal.

The Korean version was better in terms of the family background for Maeum as this made her journey of discovery in work and personally more interesting. The gender mix in the team and the backstory of the previous organisation.

In the Japanese version I liked the shop characters efforts with the displays, the story of Koizumi learning from Kurosawa about levels of engagement in a work setting and called the

Spoilers : For Today’s Webtoon and Sleeeper Hit

I just watched today’s episode of “Webtoon” and the whole twisted logic of Ae-ri’s uncle that her accident was somehow Jang Man-cheol killing her is too far-fetched. It seems like he was making up the story for the cash he extorted from Yoon Su. That whole arc was unnecessary IMO. I actually liked the arc of Jun Koizumi in the Japanese version where he learns the ropes of the work and also about why you should not cut the corners . That book shop worker and the sensei whose autograph he is trying to trade for prominent position in the book store scene was very old school and more to my taste.

          1
          1

Agreed I was literally shouting at the tv that the Uncle was out of order as initially it was her boss to blame then it was Aeri’s brother being away. It was him not being a responsible supportive guardian and constantly sapping them of every penny so she couldn’t study and therefore qualify for a better paying role. What did he actually do for these children at any point in their lives? I wonder if the parents left the house to the children and did it on a way that they couldn’t sell so the Uncle could not take that money or live there. I also wondered why neither Jihyung or Mancheol told Junyeong what actually happened, it would have been so quick and easy and it’s not a secret so why leave him confused and angry?

            1
            0

I also agree that the motivations for Ma Eum are much better in Korean version but I liked how they actually depicted the work done by the editors in the Japanese versions. (I am not sure what PDs are supposed to do for Webtoons but in Japanese version they look less like a lacky of the writers. We see the real “editorial” work they do and what they bring to the table more effectively in the Japanese version. The K version unfortunately focused on the “human” drama and almost neglected the “work” aspect of the workplace drama.

I would like to know these characters and their motivations but we spend one third of our daily lives at workplaces and the way what we are shape what we do, what we do end up shaping what we are as well.

I just had a Viki pop up directing me to collections one is called Absolute Summer which has 48 dramas and the promo picture has three actors showing off their hard earned 6 packs😳

On a different note, did you probably watch “Young actor’s retreat”? It is on Viki. (At least in the Netherlands)

Loved it and so gutted we don’t have a drama hangout to share notes each week. I was on Ally’s fan wall as she commented on it and someone else is asking for weecaps on their fan wall. I don’t know why but I was convinced this would be weecapped.

      1
      1

Let’s ask again! TBF I have not watched only The sound of Music. I was not keen on Itawon class as the genre did not appeal me. (I did not like Kim Da mi in the trailers of IC and loved her work in Our Beloved Summer). I do not like Sageuks so the “Love in the moonlight” had not charm for me.

        1
        2

Ah! The mistakes are aplenty in the post above. It should be “I have only watched The sound of Music”

          1
          2

I only watched Love in the moonlight the other two I stopped after a couple of episodes but I have watched a couple of dramas of each of the other two leads and I watched In the Soop: friendcation so feel ready for a variety show though it’s likely to be the only one I ever watch as I don’t like people being made to do things for fun that are anxiety provoking and or ridiculous. This week the trailer showed a few of those ‘games’ with the ghosts and getting thrown into the water so I hope it moves back to the fun that week one had quite quickly.

          1
          5

Yes. I get where you are coming from.

I sometimes watch I live Alone. The one which I binge watched was “Three meals a day” (Only one season I have watched in full) and I have re-watched food videos multiple times.

But mostly I stay clear of variety shows. I watched one episode of Running man once and just could enjoy it. The whole competition part which seems to be a backbone of variety shows is not my cup of tea.

@jillofalltrades I think the only other reality show would have been the one with the hospital playlist cast if they had Subbed it.

            0

@reply1988 There is a version of them in the same show “Three meals a day” and there are subs. Just not on the sites which are the best of this.

            0

Thanks @jillofalltrades I was seeing the post for the Three meals a day with the Hospital Playlist team on Instagram and it looked so sweet I really wanted to watch it had it been subbed. I tried a rogue platform for other dramas but the random adult ads were too much so I just accept it now if I miss out on something.
I am loving the HiTV app someone mentioned it on here and I have love it because it has a lot of the dramas that I can’t find elsewhere and is a safe site as the ads are low key for games and legitimate companies like PayPal and you can skip them. If you pause during a show an add will appear in the middle of the screen but you can get past it easily.
I even started watching Unicorn because it was on there and it is ridiculous but funny.

            0
            0

“random adult ads” – THIS! I kind of gave up trying to watch it because of it. (I preserved for three episodes and they were all sorts of cute) The three meals a day version I watched was available on Viki (in the past, not any more)

I wish some of the platforms pick these shows. A lot are showing on YouTube as well. MBS world and KBS World are on YouTube. (That is where I am/was watching “It is beautiful now )

I wasn’t going to join in this as I am out the loop on K pop as I only take a couple of songs from the OST’s that sum up the mood of the dramas I love but I didn’t notice this one appear on the list.

Another great OST! I think I’ll have to add a couple before midnight!

    1

Sorry for the late entries 🥺 but I couldn’t not mention theme as they have been my theme songs for 2022. Along with two Rachael Yamagata songs from Something in the rain. But they came off the playlist when I realised that whilst they were also reminding me how special their relationship was I was also reliving the disappointment that the female lead’s weak character meant that she couldn’t appreciate and trust that genuine deep love.

Check out beans of wisdom on DB. It used to be an old feature with funny and also wise comments across recaps from the week. Plus I don’t have the link to oppa wars and I’m guessing none of the participants of that one are still active but that was a hilarious thread.

Thank you for the Beans of wisdom loving it so far. So many of the old post have names that rarely pop up now but it’s good to see a lot of the regulars have been around for time. The Oppa wars I looked in popular post and the search feature but couldn’t get it to come up. Will keep looking.

The PPL post was all about The King Eternal Monarch and it was an absolute joy to read. I think I will have to watch it now just to see how bad it really was because if the comments really weren’t exaggerating for comedic effect it sounds like it would be torture to watch seriously but perfect for treating as a big joke. It sounds like the Lotte k drama Seven first kisses approach would have been a better angle to take.

Tech support
It’s been a while since I logged one of these I thought I was getting to know the unique elements of the sites😬

Has anyone else noticed the equivalent of a ‘use by date’ on when a like will be logged on your page? It will show a like in the comments section (if you click it again it will say you have upvoted already) so it’s clear the system has logged it but when you look at your page the number of likes remains the same. At first I thought it was a lag issue so refreshed the page, logged in and out even turned my device off but it has not changed. However, when I liked a comment that came in today my number count immediately went up. Initially I thought the lack of registered likes made on posts from years ago was maybe due to those people no longer being active on the site but it happened with a post from a few days ago and the comments were a few days after the original post.

I only noticed the lack of movement because I track my numbers regularly as there is no way of knowing when I will jump a level. I look out for when I am about to come up to round numbers as I am guessing its more likely a change of level will occur at round numbers than an odd number but who knows.

Other news
The page is refreshing part way through me composing a message to someone and jumping around the site to the page I was looking at just before it seems to be happening more frequently over the last couple of days I am not sure if this is only effecting me or is site wide.

2
7

I’m a bit confused about what you’re talking about here.

Are you talking about recieving a like from someone else, or liking your own comment, or liking someone else’s comment and tracking the overall like count???

Liking your own comments doesn’t, or shouldn’t, increase your overall like count, although it says you’ve liked the comment (and will give you the already upvoted thing, and will appear as logged on the comment itself).

Are you noticing an increase in your overall likes for this anyway?

I have uhm. Some experience. With upvoting (ahem. I like. pretty ratios and palindromes etc 👀👀🙊), but as far as I’m aware, from experience, upvoting older comments has no used by date as it were.

But perhaps I’m missing your point?
(I also currently have like notifs turned off (why is another story) so I can’t immediately test this for someone ELSE liking my posts).

(This was all gonna be in my Master Post also tbh haha)

Haven’t noticed the large jumping thing but dB can be very weird and glitchy sometimes.

    2
    1

Hopefully this makes it a bit clearer:

Alchemy of Souls episode 9-10 post was posted on 18th July you added comments on July 20th and I only saw them today. Your comment was in two or three parts and I liked each part and when I looked on my likes number it had stayed at the same number so I thought it had frozen which it does sometimes so re liked them and each one it said had been up voted.
I tried another post on someone’s fan page and liked it again the number of likes on my page did not change.
Someone responded today to one of my comments so I liked their response and the number on my likes showed an immediate change.

      1
      2

So my likes are 2,156 and i have just liked your comment here and on the Eve page and it still shows as 2,156. I have clearly navigated off the page and back and it has not refreshed the number.

    1
    0

I have just left a couple of comments on various parts of the sites and they are showing up usually after I have moved back and forth between pages. The likes remain on 2,156.

    1
    0

Thanks so much for your patience explaining all these things.

Thats so funny, that it’s taken nearly 3 months to realise that I have no control over the number of likes showing on my page. I have assumed that when I was liking other people the numbers I was seeing was in response to that so how strange that the numbers were changing at the same time to make me believe that 🤣. So now when I am waiting for a round number or matching numbers 888 or 555 which have been recent catches, I can’t control for it so I might miss it!

I always knew the number of likes and replies by others was a factor but I assumed those numbers were behind the scenes and I just focused on the things I could control liking others to help their behind the scenes and increased my like count as it showed my activity on the various parts of the site. Priceless! I will go back to liking old posts now I know as some of those beanies are still on the site and I just assumed it was not valued hence not showing up on my like count!

I am even more intrigued now as I have noticed that some beanies have very high like counts compared to their comments which means a lot of people like what they say when they do comment but they are still not climbing as fast as others. Back to the drawing board on my theories.🕵️‍♀️

    1

For those of us who have hung on in there hate watching Why her just for the bean we are finally on the home stretch. We know they are likely to go all out with shock and awe tactics so don’t stumble at the last cliff hanger tonight accept it is likely to be really bad and plan your celebration when it will all be over tomorrow. Hwaiting 💪

Let’s meet in the comments section of other more enjoyable dramas and hopefully all other beans will be earned with a smile of satisfaction.
