6. Sunny Side Up! – Red Velvet
This song reminds me of a hot summer day. The steady strum of the guitar and the lackadaisical vocals are like the hot, humid heat creeping across your skin. I love the “whoa-oh ooh la la” ad-lib peppered throughout the chorus. It adds interest to an otherwise steady beat and progression. By not doing too much, Sunny Side Up! does a lot.

7. Highlight – IZ*ONE
No one is as shocked as I am that I love an IZ*ONE song. Highlight is a house-influenced track that has never been done before in Kpop. The verses are heavy with electronic chimes and twinkles. This is followed by a chorus that strips it all away, leaving only a distorted whistling sound, thumping bassline, and the breathy (and insanely catchy) hook. I am a sucker for switch-ups in the final chorus and the one here is subtle, yet incredible, by adding in electronic horn sounds. Kudos to IZ*ONE for taking a risk. This song is truly a *highlight* in their discography.

I actually quite like this group a lot and enjoy many of the songs that they put out. They really nail the chic girl next door concept. The allegations that came out of vote rigging and corruption makes me feel sorry not just for the group but also to the other girls who should have made it.

    1
    1

Since I enjoyed this song I was looking forward to their next Korean comeback. It is a shame about the allegations and I feel really sorry for the girls who should have made it into this group. Also, the current members worked so hard as trainees and then on this show, so it is unfortunate that their promotions were cancelled when the situation was completely out of their hands.

Imo, their discography is the best among all Produce groups. I had no expectations for their debut but they keep surprising me. It’s a shame that behind the scenes stuff got in the way of the trainees who didn’t make it and the current members.

8. Uh-Oh – (G)-IDLE
The production on this song is incredible. I am skeptical when Kpop groups say they are going for an old school hip-hop concept. But, Soyeon nails it. The record scratches and effortlessly lazy beat really bring the concept to life yet still keep (G)I-DLE’s flare.

One of my favorite songs this year. Everything (song, concept, choreo) was on point. Really reminded me of the 90s a la TLC.

    2
    1

Yes, love the TLC comparison! I was also impressed that every single member fit this concept perfectly. You can tell they put a lot of hard work in to preparing for this.

This group keeps its overall style and still offer different concepts that are pertinent. I’m glad to see Soyeon working on her producing even in a group.

9. Lion – (G)I-DLE
(G)I-DLE are concept chameleons to the extent that being outside of the box is their box. Lion is an amazing addition to their discography and by far their best music video. This song screams confidence from the lion roars, intense drumbeat, and hook of “I’m a queen like a lion”. Soyeon’s rap is the climax of the song: a warning to anyone who doubts that (G)I-DLE is quickly rising to the top.

10. Cherry – ITZY
ITZY was the most anticipated Kpop act of 2019. Their debut and comeback title tracks were good, but I was left feeling a bit lukewarm. I definitely expected more. Enter “Cherry”: a peek into ITZY’s potential if they lean in to the edgier side of their teen crush concept. The members’ voices really shine with a lower key and trap-influenced beat. If you are on the fence about ITZY like I was, maybe this song will change your mind.

11. Obsession – EXO
EXO’s harmonies send shivers right to my soul. The smooth chorus is a killer contrast to the hard-hitting verses. This song makes me feel deranged as the distorted background vocals chant “I want you”, perfectly transporting me into the emotions at the center of this track.

I didnt start listening to EXO until this year. A mix of a deep dive ep on them on the podcast I listen to and Tempo. So, Tempo and Love Shot feel like 2019 releases to me. I love their harmonies and all the ways they use their voices. Nice to hear Kai in this one.

I have to admit that I did not like Obsession when I initially listened to it. Several listens in and I’m hooked. I quite like the opening “I want you” and the rap parts. I miss D.O.’s vocals, though. The live performances of Obsession have been fun to watch. This song is probably in my top 5 for 2019.

I miss D.O.’s vocals, too. I was nervous about a comeback without all of the members, but I think they managed to make it feel whole. Chen did an amazing job in taking on some of the more intense vocal moments.

12. I’m So Pretty – NATURE
This song is like a vitamin shot for me. I listen to it whenever I want to feel energized and perhaps a little sassy. The explosions of brass and percussion demand attention from the listener. The “I’m so pretty” hook is intoxicating and was stuck in my head for weeks when this song was released. I love how fresh this song is. I haven’t heard anything quite like it before.

I can’t believe that this song flew under my radar. *adds to playlist* This is the type of song that got me into K-pop, summery bubblegum pop. My tastes in music may have evolved but I keep coming back to this type of sound. Btw, could you also tag me in your upcoming posts? I’m curious to see which other songs got into your list.

13. Kill This Love – BLACKPINK
I think I may be in the minority of Kpop fans who think this is one of BLACKPINK’s best title tracks. The military-esque percussion is blended flawlessly with Teddy’s production style. The back-to-back rapping of Jenny and Lisa in the second verse adds intrigue, breaking down the standard formula of members always having their own moments throughout a song. The music video is one of my favorites of the year as well. The imagery drives the lyrics home. A bear trap in the shape of a heart? Genius.

So far we have UN Village in common if I made a list.
I love the Rum pum pum. Its playful and feels like it is leading up to something and the group has a great vibe with it. Otherwise it feels too broken up, like vignettes of a song, with out some thing holding it together. To my ears.

    2
    2

I definitely understand what you mean about it being broken up. I kind of like that about it! Keeps my ears intrigued. Another song that I think does this well is Dalla Dalla by ITZY. And I think it is done not so well in Zimzalabim by Red Velvet. Seems like it’s a composition trend in Kpop so I bet we’ll see more of it in 2020.

Glad we have UN Village in common 🙂 Would love to see your list if you were to make one!

Now that you mentioned Rum Pum Pum, I’m reminded of f(x). 😅 That song, at least to me, just sounds so “current” even if it came out in 2013.

14. UN Village – BAEKHYUN
Baekhyun’s vocals get me every time. This is such an easy listen. I absolutely love the lilting melody. Not much to say except it is a flawless, chill track. What more would we expect from a vocal god?

15. Sorry – AOA
The last few months of 2019 were phenomenal for AOA. Queendom gave exposure to many girl groups, but I think AOA benefitted the most. They were able to shed their previous image and rebirth their group after losing 2 members. Sorry takes all of the signature elements of an AOA song (breathy vocals, catchy chorus, sex appeal) and then amps up the mature factor. I always found AOA’s songs fun yet a little kitschy, which is not always my taste. Sorry hits a sweet spot between trying something new, but not too new to turn away previous fans and I think we can look forward to an AOA revival in 2020. If you like this song, I highly recommend checking out their cover of Mammamoo’s “Egotistic”!

16. Senorita – (G)I-DLE
If you followed along with my Top 10 list from 2018 or follow my fanwall posts, you may know (G)I-DLE is my favorite Kpop group. Their first comeback of 2019 was a grower; I didn’t find myself truly jamming to this Latin-inspired track until the summer. The instrumental and vocals are stripped back in comparison to (G)I-DLE’s previous releases, utilizing subtle percussion and smashing the “three chorus” standard song structure. I appreciate how (G)I-DLE constantly experiments and can flawlessly execute any style they take on.

I keep meaning to check them out. Mostly because of that opening to Key’s song. That little “Shinee. Bling Bling” and the rap break, love it.

17. Midnight – Ailee
The vocal queen is back! Her album is full of amazing songs, but Midnight is the standout to me. Ailee has a soulful voice, but I love the different style she sings with here; at first sweet and then growing powerful and full of desire in the chorus. I can feel the desperation of needing to be close to someone like the lyrics describe. The twinkly sounds layered on top of the insane synth transport me to Cloud 9 with a special someone.

18. Adios – EVERGLOW
EVERGLOW carved out a nice space for themselves in the Kpop universe with their bass bumping, EDM drop-infused releases. The verses are dripping with attitude, but the showstopper is the “goodbye, au revoir, adios” hook whispered right before the epic chorus that’s not a chorus (which seemed to be all the rage in Kpop this year). EVERGLOW has a unique sound compared to other girl groups and I am excited to see where they take it in their next comeback.

19. Twit – Hwa Sa
This is the perfect “go away” anthem. I love the electronic chirping sound throughout and how it accentuates the title of the song. Hwa Sa delivers effortless sass and sultry vocals for her solo debut. Let’s hope for a solo comeback in 2020!

20. Umpah Umpah – Red Velvet
Red Velvet is known for their constantly changing sound and they did it again with this song. After the utter chaos of Zimzala-whatever, I was pleasantly surprised by this easy listen. While not the most sonically interesting in their repertoire, it is a fun, cute summer song that transports me to the beach where I am sipping on fruity drinks.

I’ll have to give this another listen sometime. RV has always been one of the group that I’ve just never been able to get into. They seem to be really good vocalists, which is what usually of the first things to get my attention, but I just can’t seem to get into their sound. I’ve heard that their B-sides tend to be really good, though!

I tend to only follow their title tracks. I’ve never done a deep dive into their B-sides, but a few I like are: I Just, Kingdom Come, Zoo, and Butterflies.

Oh, fun. Add me to the tag? I was listening to the Ask Me About Kpop best of list and the two host had a guest who loves girl groups. Anyway it made me laugh when they played Baekhyun’s UN Village (he hadn’t heard it till that day) and he said paraphrased, “this song is so easy to enjoy and it just reminded me of zimzalabim and we as a society had to figure out how to listen to it.”

Should I attempt a Top 20 Kpop Songs of 2019 list like I did last year? It was a lot of fun and brought some of us Beanies together to discuss our kpop faves.

Yes, please! I didn’t follow kpop this year because there were just too many “comebacks” but I’d like to know the songs I should add to my playlist. I’m lazy. 🙈

For me it is almost too much. It’s funny because I see long time kpop fans regularly complain about not having a second or third comeback. I’m used to acts dropping something once a year.

Finally finished the last 6 eps of Extraordinary You because I was determined to not drop it after how much I loved the first 10 eps. Pretty much everything I liked about the show ceased to exist by the end. The story dragged and didn’t make much sense. Oh well. I’m at least proud of myself for making it through to the end of a drama for the first time in months.

Decided to watch Tale of Nokdu because a lot of Beanies seemed to like it throughout its run. It has become my long weekend binge! I\’m usually not a fan of historical dramas, but this one is so good! The leads are absolutely adorable, the show has just the right amount of comedy, and the royalty plotline does not overwhelm the rest of the show.
