I was wondering where you’ve been? Glad to see you back @ndlessjoie!

I feel like I’m far behind even though I’m almost done with episode 6. Watching sageuks for me is like a slow-burn romance. LOL.

I thought I had the court maids dress code figured out, but then in the scene where the Wol Hye and other court maids pestered Lady Seo to bring back Deok Im, Wol Hye and few others were wearing pink. So, Sageuk expert and history nerd beanies, please tell me whether the below points correct are correct?

      1) Till the coming of age ceremony (less than 18 years of age), all maids would wear a light rose colour dress and have their hair down in a single plait.

      2) Then their dress colour would be light shade of green and their hair would be plaited and rolled at the nape of the neck.

      3) When they get more experience, say 10 years, they get to wear dark green with their hair in a bun.

It is the first time I’m paying attention to details in a Sageuk, which means the drama is really good.

The pink at the end of Episode 6 on girls who are obviously official Court Ladies initially threw me as well, but then I noticed that along with her hair still being up ofc, there is a dark pink band underneath their armpits, and a dark pink collar, on both these pink uniform hanboks, and the pale jade green hanboks they normally wear, and the skirts are a darker blue also, in comparison to the pale rose and slightly lighter blue hanbok they wear as saenggaksi, before coming of age.
So I’m guessing that this version of gungnyeo dress is something they might wear for certain tasks/ jobs? As @kiara mentioned, different court ladies had different roles.

Pink generally meant in training, so potentially this is something they wear when they’re still in training for a specific role, despite having graduated out of saenggaksi, but I’m not sure if this holds up to the official court lady system.
I’ll do some more research later mayhaps.

Otherwise, you are pretty much correct on your points of attire for court ladies based on rank, yes.

To pull from The Talking Cupboard re the hairstyle though (which has some resources on historical dress):
The daenggi meori (๋Œ•๊ธฐ๋จธ๋ฆฌ) was the hairstyle young women wore before they were married, that is the simple long plait, tied with a normally red daenggi.
The Saeng meori (์ƒ๋จธ๋ฆฌ) is what the court ladies once graduated, wear- where the the plait is tied up with the daenggi, instead of being down.
The hair was parted into several parts and it was braided and folded. The number of parts depended on the departments in which the court ladies worked: jimil nain had four parts while chimbang and sukbang nain had their hair divided into two parts. The daenggi for this hairstyle depended on the number of parts too: negadak daenggi for the four-part (๋„ค โ€“ ne = four, ๊ฐ€๋‹ฅ โ€“ gadak = the part of hair) and dugadak daenggi for two-part ( ๋‘ โ€“ du = two) saeng meori.

Here is a good illustration by Glimja: https://www.deviantart.com/glimja/art/Saeang-meori-420908075

TheCheopji meori (์ฒฉ์ง€๋จธ๋ฆฌ) is what the high ranking court ladies, and married royals wore- deriving its name from the cheopji, the type of ornament that sits on the top of their head. The cheopji indicates rank- the senior court ladies, the sanggung’s cheopji are small silver frogs. Their hair is secured in a bun using a binyeo the large, long hair pins that imo need to feature more use as hidden daggers ๐Ÿ˜›

Both the talking cupboard and glimja have more and interesting resources on Joseon fashion, dress, headwear and hairstyles. If I have time I might do a bit of a summary post on it all if people are interested? I know Kiara wants me to do one on the hanbok pffffft. I often notice these details, as I have said often to the point of being distracted, because I love costume and fashion, but I’m still learning myself and haven’t learnt all the terms yet. All the hairstyles and terms for different styles and ornaments alone gets complicated and I only gave you a little summary of the main hairstyles we see of court ladies here.

Though I know some dramas take liberties with the color code, my impression was that there are about 5 colors. Dae Jang geum did an amazing job of portraying this. There, the flow went like this.
        1. Pink for trainee maids
        2. Teal for official junior maids
        3. Darker pink for official Senior maids (in DJG, the maids of the same rank but of different departments had diff colors)
        4. Light green dangui for junior Sangung/Nain
        5. Dark green dangui for senior sangung.

So your question made me curious.
I looked closer (too bad can’t share screenshot here, if you want I’ll make a comparison post on my wall or smth), the corresponding colors in Red Sleeve are like this.
        1. Pink trainee
        2. Light green with Red neckline strip for official junior
        3. Pink with red neckline strip for possibly official senior (this Pink is quite similar to the trainee one, hence the confusion)
        4. I didn’t see any Light green dangui, this rank seems to be nonexistent
        5. Jade for sangung.

My brain is not really working today so my notes will not be as thought out as I would like and in bullet points and Iโ€™ll probably miss stuff but whatever:

    Fave Parts of 5:
    – Secret Club!
    – Stares
    – Why are you wearing the outfit of a married woman!
    – Sworn Allegiance to the Future King, with Tears, and Forbidden Attendance.

    Fave Parts of 6:
    – I actually only got round to watching episode 6 yesterday lol
    – All of it it was my favourite episode so far, and no, not just cos of the infamous bath scene lol
    – The Riddle Recap with San facepalming but complimenting Deok Mi anyway. (He said her name, le gasp pfft)
    – The Silk Worm Room! Weโ€™re at the end of the Joseon Dynasty comparatively, but the history of Silk is so Fascinating and I geeked out a little when I saw that.
    – Iโ€™m a sucker for sageuks that focus on traditional life, detail, ritual and ceremony, this show gives us a fair amount of it: The emphasis on festivals and ceremonies, and formality, and clothing changing to fit that. Aka I loved everything about the Silk Cocoon Ceremony.
    – Including the Politics of it! The interconnectedness and alliances both big and small, and how everything had a price, how easily the King commanded his court, how they couldnโ€™t argue back, Hwawanโ€™s punishment, Deok Mi being imperative to it all working! Marvellous time, I had.
    – But especially the emphasis on ceremonial clothing, from court lady, to nobility, to princess and ofc, the Queen. Lady Hye Gyungโ€™s dark purple and olive green with terracotta and marroon accents had more class than Princess Hwawanโ€™s expensive Qin garb in my opinion.
    – Although I found it very convenient that Deok Miโ€™s friend spoke about Princess Hwawan buying silk from Qin immediately after sheโ€™d been given her task by the Queenโ€ฆ Did we know that her friend was the daughter of a silk merchant prior to this? If we did it wouldโ€™ve worked better, but I at least didnโ€™t. But itโ€™s only a small nitpick and I donโ€™t mind in the grand scheme of thing because I was enjoying the story too much haha.
    – Speaking of the Politics behind this episode, @kiara, historically was the Queen in support of San, or not? I like her but I donโ€™t know if sheโ€™s friend or foe yet.
    – I also liked Deok Ro beingโ€ฆ well Deok Ro, and the introduction of his sister. I donโ€™t know if I LIKE him but I enjoy him as a character.
    – I loved the parallel between San saying โ€œI trust her but I donโ€™t think highly of her talentsโ€ vs Deok Ro saying โ€œReally? I think highly of her talents, but do not trust herโ€.
    – San in Purple Shooting. XD
    – San being like โ€œi hope the queen doesn’t keep her permanently. Will I get her BACK?! Iโ€™ll get her BACK RIGHT? SHEโ€™S CANโ€™T STAY AFTER I JUST GOT OUT? THE INJUSTICE?โ€
    – โ€œUnfortunately *grinning* the Queen is a higher rank than you~โ€
    – The court ladies physically dragging Deok Mi into the bathing room and locking her in there.

    12
    11

      – San apparently has no qualms about being shirtless in front of any other court lady, but does in front of Deok Mi lmao.
      – I donโ€™t need to break down the Bath Scene, do I?
      – Although honestly I was minorly distracted the whole time cos he said the Water was COLD! And she brought ONE BUCKET! And there was no STEAM. And he was just chilling in the cold bath? Adfghjkl or was he lying cos heโ€™s precious like thatโ€ฆ

      10
      2

I’m going back to check out the colours of the ceremonial garb.

      4
      1

The ceremony scene was fascinating. I admit to not knowing much about Joseon ceremonies, so thereโ€™s probably a bunch of nuance I missed, but clothes worn by all the nobility and royalty looked gorgeous to me. The politics of power between the women present was portrayed so deftly that even I understood that what Princess Hwawan did was a grave offence. Although it did take me until the scene between the King and Queen to realize why her wearing Qin silk was a faux-pas.

But thatโ€™s why I wanted to join this hangout thread in the first place! Iโ€™m not very knowledgeable about Joseon-era culture and history beyond the very basics I picked up from watching sageuks. However, I always end up learning new things from beanie comments and discussion threads. Iโ€™m loving the details in this drama and itโ€™s clear that painstaking work was done to make the setting rich and immersive. And getting to learn about the historical details always adds to my enjoyment of a sageuk.

      11

This is one of the many reasons I love sageuks. I’m always learning something new about Korea’s history and culture. It’s fascinating!

        1

Oh absolutely! Thatโ€™s the fun of watching sageuks. Iโ€™m a huge history nerd in real life (currently majoring in South Asian history), so my love for sageuks are just an extension of that. The history of Korea is so complex and multifaceted; thereโ€™s no way I wouldnโ€™t get fascinated.

In episode 5, I laughed aloud at the King’s Swordsman’s line,
“I feel a personal affinity to His Majesty today. He just made a clown of himself.”
I like how his character has a life of its own – his memory lapses, his having to take the blame for things, and his self-awareness.

      17
      2

I was disapointed by the Queen scene in the silk ceremony. I was so ready to see her destroying the Princess Hwawan with her words but the scene was lacking. The Princess didn’t undestand what she did wrong and then we got the scene with the King.

I really like the scenes with the King. You never know how they will go, he’s in a good mood? Will he be angry? The CP and the King’s scenes are my favourite. I love the King’s glasses ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m still not convinced by LSY’s acting in the ingenuous parts of her character. I don’t know if the drama will have a time jump and it’s just her way to act the young Deok-Im. But she’s more natural in the quiet scenes.

I really like the friendship between the court ladies. I hope they will stay friends when they will know about Deok-Im and the CP.
The fall in the bath was pretty funny but the scene after was so beautiful. Why they always stop the episode at the best part? >_<

      Where is San's wife?

        Re: San’s wife..

I do not think he has an official wife yet since he and his mother were talking about the right wife for him would be someone from an aristocratic lineage.

        2
        2

I thought they married when they were young. I mean in the History. I don’t know in this story.

          3
          7

San was married when he was 10, and his wife was 9 years old (typical political arranged marriage). She is the current crown princess and future queen. She is in the background because this is Deok Im’s story, the woman that San loves and chooses to be his wife.

            8
            0

@kiara But is she in this story, they never mentionned her?

I understand the story is about Yi-San and Deok-Im’s story but the fact he already married is not really a detail. This drama is about real history. Mentionning her won’t make Yi-San and Deok-Im’s love story less beautiful.

            2
            0

@kiara thanks for clearing that up. Despite it being Deok Im’s story, I have not heard it mention about a wife so I assumed there was none yet. I know Jeongjo has multiple wives so I expected the Crown Princess to be mentioned later on.

            4

            @Kurama
I don’t know if she is going to make an appearance later or not.

It doesn’t matter to me if she is part of the show or not. They already have a lot to cover in 16 episodes.

            OT
The actress playing Ji Woon’s mom in TKA played San’s queen in the 77 episodes sageuk YI SAN.
She fully supported Deok Im and San’s relationship because she didn’t have any children.

            4
            0

@kiara I found her history interesting honestly. She was married young and at the opposite of the King, she hasn’t the right to have male concubin ๐Ÿ˜› So it’s nice she supported her husband and adopted his kids with other women to make them “official”.

            3
            0

            @Kurama,

San’s queen and the current queen did not have any children of their own, but since they were the highest rank women in the inner court, all of the children of the concubines were considered theirs.

Princess Hwawan was way out of line. The queen is technically her mother, so I’m finding faults with King Yeongjo when it comes to spoiling his daughter and being extremely harsh on his son.
It’s good to see him kind of balance it out with San, but he is still harsh.
On the other hand, maybe San needs some hard lessons? He did knowingly disobeyed the king’s orders.
Like the king said to San, “one day you’ll sit on that throne, and then you’ll understand me.”

            6
            0

            @Kurama,

This drama is not just about real history. It’s a traditional fusion. The main source is taken from a novel. The author must have done her homework. The history and fiction are well balanced.

            8
            0

          @jillian

You are correct in your assumption. They haven’t mentioned anything about his wife yet. I’m just going off with what I know about history.
There is a lot of history that they are not showing and it’s always in the back of my mind as background info.

          4
          0

The King’s unpredictability keeps us all on edge. You never know if he’s going to wheel out another rice chest.

        8
        3

Yeongjo is fascinating for me partly because of his unpredictability. He does keep everyone in his court on their toes. But mostly what boggles my mind is what it took to make that decision about his son.
I am watching another version of him in Haechi. Its like a crash course on Yeongjo for me right now.

          7
          1

He is and credit to Lee Deok-hwa for humanizing Yeongjo. I can feel the weight of the crown, and It’s rare to see him this vulnerable, especially when it comes to San.

In history, Yeongjo was a great king but not a great father, obviously from our perspectives.
His reign was relatively peaceful except for the Sato incident.
I do consider him as the people’s king. His mother was one of them, so I think deep inside, he saw his lowly mother in his people.

            11
            0

Just like the palace maids, we know nothing about Yeongjo’s reactions. So uncertain. I keep waiting for his scenes, Lee Deok hwa’s experience is showing visibly here, he is amazing.

          1

LOL “Irascible” keeps coming to me. He is an irascible and difficult man. But he’s king. I laughed when he got the court to agree that San was not being confined.

            4
            0

Princess Hwawan is a spoiled, entitled, disrespectful brat. She knows what she is doing, and as the king’s favorite, she gets away with a lot of crap.
The “young” queen (she’s younger than all of Concubine Jeong’s children) is always careful when to pick her battle.

The queen is young, so we’ll see what happens when daddy passes away.

        7
        1

Oh, I don’t like Princess Hwawan and it’s why I was expecting more from their confrontation. But the scene wasn’t really strong for me. The actress playing the Queen is really great by the way.

          5
          3

Am I the only one who thinks these two resemble a bit? Lol. It took me two epsiodes to realize these are two separate people. Jang Hee Jin is doing wonderful as the Queen.

            5
            0

The Queen is really wonderful! I suppose I have to also give credit to the actress playing Princess Hwawan, because I just want to smack her so bad 😡

            8
            0

Agree; Jang Hee-jin perfectly plays this elegant queen. She is a sageuk veteran, so no surprise there.

I thought it was well done. The queen put Hwawan in her place in front of royal and influential women in the capital.
If any woman dares to disrespect the queen, this is what will happen to them.

Thanks to Hwawan, San will have the queen on his side.

            5
            0

I have only seen LSY in The Best Hit and was not convinced by her there however, she’s better here imo but others are too good that they are overshadowing her completely, even the Queen, Jang Hee Jin.

        2
        1

I like her honestly. She was one of the best character in Korean Odysseus, she was great in Kairos and The Crowned Clown. But for this role, the bright side of her character looks a little bit forced or comical. But for the serious scene, like the bath, I like her.

          7
          2

I love her, I came for her.

I’m not sure if it’s the writing or Se-young or just me not getting it. There is a scene of her pulling Junho down into the water and the bath scene made me laugh but left me confused at the same time. Was she supposed to do that? LOL
The hand and cutesy acting is supposed to be conveying what? Joseon aegyo? I swear I’m the only one who doesn’t get it. LOL.

            Help…

            5
            0

I think there are a few places where the dialogue is a little off- either in delivery, or writing, or execution. So I can see how the comical scenes might seemed forced- for me it was a couple of scenes where she spoke to Deok Ro, that seemed far too casual and also awkward for the scene and the era. Like the dialogue just becomes super stunted and weird all of a sudden- the main time I can think of is when he pulled her out of the Court Lady’s area and asked her what she was to San.
But then there’s always a really good scene to follow it so I don’t mind- there were almost none of these awkward scenes in Ep 6 for me though. (In comparison to previous awkwardness, the scene with DI and DR on the bridge was class.)

That being said! @kiara– the pulling Junho down into the water scene was so very clearly meant to be over the top and ridiculous and comedy- she was meant to pull him down again and again, that was clearly what they were going for with that scene- I laughed but it was a bit too obviously staged so then I just laughed at that as well.
            The bath…
I rewatched and I think it was supposed to be that she got shocked and overbalanced, which like, that could be fair, but the way they directed it and executed it … well, as has already been said, made it look like she just leapt into his arms for no reason hahaha.

            4

      – I am on the fence with the Queen, I do not trust her tbh. But she appears to be the lesser evil when Princess Hwawan is so antagonistic towards her nephew.
      – I feel bad for San as everyone is against him because of who his father was and what he has done in the past.
      – I really like both episodes and love the outfits during the Silk Ceremony.

      Sic, thank you so much!

Like you, I pause a lot to read, so I haven’t finished watching episode 6 yet.

In short, San and the queen did get along until sometimes after he ascended the throne.
San later exiled her older brother Kim Gwi-ju, and their relationship went downhill from there.

      Background:
The Sato incident split the Noron faction (King Yeongjo’s supporters) further into two parties.
The Byeokpa party was led by the queen’s family (the Kims), and the Sipa party was led by San’s maternal family (the Hongs). Both were each other’s enemies.

      From wiki
“Yeongjo died on 22 April 1776, and Yi San ascended to the throne as the 22nd Joseon monarch (temple name: Jeongjo).
As widow of a king, she was honored as Queen Dowager Yesun. Hong Bong-han, Jeongjo’s maternal grandfather, and Jeong Hu-gyeom, Princess Hwawan’s adoptive son, protested this decision. Yesun’s older brother, Kim Gwi-ju, advised his sister to wait for the right moment, but Jeongjo acted first. He dismissed Hong Bong-han and Jeong Hu-gyeom from office. However, Jeongjo later exiled Kim Gwi-ju to Heuksan Island with the reason of disrespect towards the King’s mother, Lady Hyegyeong. Still, the real reason was because of Kim Gwi-ju’s involvement with Hong Bong-han’s dismissal during Yeongjo’s reign. This action has made unsaid tension and extreme confrontations between Yesun and Jeongjo.”
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Jeongsun

      Comment:
The queen is not going to stand in San’s way. It doesn’t seem like the power struggles between the two families are going to be included. The queen’s brother and San’s maternal grandfather are not part of the show.

Deok Im’s King Sejong (3 bells) riddle was hilarious. She thought that the queen couldn’t figure it out. San’s reaction had me in stitches, but then he called her Deok Im-ah, and my heart melted.

Yes! The flower, and the deepest thing in the world were taken from history.

The king picked her himself just like San picked Deok Iโ€™m to be his wife. I love the parallels.

Is it safe to say that the king and San both fell for their concubine’s brain? LOL

Deok Im is said to be intelligent, so the Sejong riddle does not reflect her intelligence. Lol. I was a bit surprised that she didn’t come up with something clever. I mean, she is a bookworm and has access to the crown prince’s library.

      Episode 5:

      Made me laugh:

“Why are you wearing the outfit of a married woman!”
      And hair up.
He thought that she slept with his grandfather. Ew

The gyeomsaseo’s sasaeng fans are scary. It’s a good thing Deok Im lied, or she would have been murdered. 😂

      Thanks Sic, rest well!
I loved San running to Deok Im and then running away in embarrassment lol. Also Junho’s microexpressions when he realizes it was DI who heard his conversation with his mother. I also like that the drama shows us what happens in the palace (Silk Cocoon Festival, the lives of the court ladies etc) and is not only about San ascending the throne and his love story with Deok Im. Overall every episode is a standalone great one. LDH remains the scene stealer but LJH isn’t far off either.

I’m with you on Deok Ro. Love the character and how it’s being played by the actor. I love shady and realistic characters because life is not black or white, and if San wants to become a king he needs Deok Ro by his side, or someone like Deok Ro and he knows it.

I am going to be a Debbie Downer and speculate that it would have been highly dangerous for young Court ladies to attend to male young and old royal family members having a bath by themselves because of how they were viewed: as the property of the monarch and hence the possibility of sexual assault would have been likely so while in isolation that scene had a comical touch, there was an important safety protocol that the others violated by forcing Deokim to go in by herself.

My two interesting cameos for episode 6:
    rising actress Park Seo-kyung
    https://asianwiki.com/Park_Seo-Kyung_(2009)
    she was played Hong Dan
    – she previously starred as Shin Jin-A in both seasons of TV Chosun’s hit Love feat. Marriage & Divorce earlier this year

    Jung Jong-woo
    https://asianwiki.com/Jung_Jong-Woo_(actor)
he played as the royal palace guard
    – he previously appeared on fellow sageuk Kdrama Secret Royal Inspector (KBS) as the captain
    – OMG! He had mostly a lot of supporting Kdrama roles since 2016.

    My interesting parts of…
    Episode 5
dong – same deok – virtue (dong deok = same virtue)
    – book called Dongguk Munheon Bigo – Compilation of Materials in Korea
    – another book Book of the Odes
    there’s an ode inside:

    The north wind is chilly,
    the falling snow is thick,
if you are affectionate and love me,
I will hold your hand and go with you
you are so modest, you are so slow,
    but oh, there is urgency!

…Are foxes only red and ravens only black?
…the north wind is cold, the falling snow is voluminous
If you love me and are affectionate
With the one I love and who likes me,
I will hold your hand and part with you
…I will hold your hand and go in your carriage

    Episode 6
    – caterpillar or silkworm?
    – for me, the silk ceremony was elegant, colorful ceremony with so many beautiful costumes

Panicles would be most precious to the hungry, while the flower of the licorice is to the herbalist, as the cotton flower would be for the one in need of clothing.

The only reason for the Silk Cocoon Ceremony is to encourage the women of Joseon to wear clothes woven with Joseon silk.

Princess Hwawan showed a Qin silk instead from fron of the lord wives and courtladies.
    – the archery scenes was great, beautiful sport event
    – I love the white and pink petals from the bath

Do you see these 👁👁 @mmmmm?

You wonโ€™t believe how much time I spent watching that body in a wet robe (well, I donโ€™t really wanna admit this). What I donโ€™t understand is why the woman is in the bathtub with him.

Iโ€™m really not drawn to his eyes, Mugy. Iโ€™m drawn to that body in a wet robe. But again, I didnโ€™t even care about the head tbh.

I still think Iโ€™m immune to him.

😂😂😂 @mmmmm are you me? I did the same. Body > Head, but then I am not a fangirl of Junho, though I like his acting here

First it’s the body in the robe, then it’s his character in Just Between Lovers, and then it’s the 👁👁. 😆

I’ve watched JBL until ep8, I’m a little bit sad to say that while I found the show very engaging, I don’t think I’m in the right mind space to watch the show right now. It’s too depressing.

          7

*this is why I put it off for like two years myself, also haha* *had to be in the mood for a melo* *lol* ended up loving it though. Hwaiting!

            2
            0

It can wait. This one is really a healing melo that will make you squee many times, not a “look they’re finally together and it’s a sunny day by the beach” during the last 30 minutes melo.

Perhaps it doesn’t have a high enough body count per episode? (I will never forget Chocolate, for all the wrong reasons 😆.)

            0

Yes, dramas should be watched when Iโ€™m in the right mood, or it wonโ€™t be loved as much as it should be.

But what I found the most endearing about JBL until ep8 is the FLโ€™s eyes. She has two big round eyes which are so expressive and lovely.

Why are you mocking Chocolate? 😡 It has lovely cooking scenes by Chef Cha-yong and lovely osts and its setting is a hospice!

            2
            0

Sorry @mmmmm but I found so much to mock in Chocolate. JBL does have a FL with big round eyes. It also has a ML with gorgeous expressive eyes. Did you make it to the coat scene yet? He also has a big cozy coat to go with his soulful expressive eyes.

            @ndlessjoie *eyerolls* I LOVE Chocolate!

And about the eye thing, I found your respective opinion quite biased. While you described the FL’s eyes are “big, round” which are very objective words, you used words such as “gorgeous, soulful, and expressive” to describe the ML’s eyes. *This is my observation, Your Honor*
