#2023RoundUp!
Days #8, #9, #10

#8 – The Character Who Most Screams For Mental Health Care
Huh. Anyone but the MIL & halmeoni in Perfect Marriage Revenge, really. 🤔

#9 – Your Non-Korean Drama Recommendation
J-Drama First Love: Hatsukoi (2022, on Netflix). For me, it ticks all the boxes:
✅ Awesome cinematography (the color palette alone is amazing! It\’s thought out to the last detail, symbolizing feelings and progression of the characters. Love!)
✅ Swoony winter romance (though it spans many years)
✅ Mini series with 9 episodes
If you cannot stand the first love trope, don\’t watch it. 😅

#10 – Your 2023 Crush
Not from a drama of 2023, but I watched it this year: Hyena\’s ML Yoon Hee Jae played by Ju Ji Hoon. Know nothing more about the actor (I don\’t think I have seen anything else with him), but really find him attractive! Would not mind more dramas with *lead* actors his age and up.

Do you like horror? He was brilliant in Kingdom (Joseon zombies). And he has a new horror show coming out per News Bites. And then there was the horror called Jiri… just kidding! 😀

It makes me sad roles kinda start disappearing for actors in their 40s. But this crop is very popular so perhaps the times they may be a changin’ 🤞🏽

    1
    1

Oooh, why horror? 😭 Hahaha, I definitely could not watch that alone (pure logistical reasons: someone needs to tell me, when it’s safe to look at the screen again, while I’m hiding behind the sofa cushions).
      What a shame. 🤧☹️😂

Yes: HYENA was such a refreshing watch considering the age if the actors. Very happy they got to do this “rom com”. Especially actresses don’t seem to be cast for romantic lead roles anymore, once they hit a certain age, which is super frustrating (but old news). But fingers crossed this will sort itself out in the near future. “Love to hate you” was also good in this aspect! 👏

      2
      1

Jirisan was not horror. Was just joking. But it did, umm, evoke mixed reactions. 😀

And yes, let’s keep hoping things change. 🤞🏽

I’ve loved Ju Ji Hoon since Lucifer/The Devil. He’s awesome, and was great in Hyena.

Joo Ji Hoon is gorgeous. He is great in Kingdom, both seasons. If you like variety, you should also check him out in Bros on Foot. Its a travel variety filmed in NZ.

    1

Okay, variety definitely sounds easier to stomach for me than horror! When I need another Ji Hoon highlight, I’ll make sure to check it out. Thanks! 💯

#2023RoundUp!
#6, #7

#6 – The Character Who Deserves a Kimchi Slap
I still cringe thinking about both of Hongjo\’s bully coworkers in Destined With You. They were frustratingly one-dimensional and just SO annoying. (To be fair, maybe the writer is actually to blame.) 🙄🙄🙄
Honorary Mention:
I first thought of Cruella of Perfect Marriage Revenge fame, but I certainly could never bear to stain her awesome wardrobe. So she\’s off the hook.

#7 – The Drama(s) Beanies Convinced You to Watch, and You Couldn\’t be More Grateful
Honestly, I\’d have never started Perfect Marriage Revenge, if it wasn\’t for you. I remember reading a news article and raising an eyebrow in disbelief of \”the plot\”, then mentally discarding it on the spot. SO glad you guys made me aware of my mistake!
Follow-up: Definitely The Matchmakers. I had watched The Red Sleeve shortly before, and didn\’t think I\’d be able to recover from the sheer beauty of this sageuk, not wanting to directly watch the next one. Oh how wrong I was! The fan wall buzz had me trying it, and I couldn\’t be happier.

#2023RoundUp!
Days #3, #4, #5

#3 – Side Character Who Stole the Drama
The hot pink coat, both on the ML in Heartbeat, and the 2/3ML in The Story of Park\’s Marriage Contract. It definitely brought its own swag. Such a fun color!

#4 – Drama I Loved and Beanies Hated
I have the feeling that Destined With You was pretty polarizing. I was in the \”Yes, please\” camp. 🦒
#4 – Drama I Hated and Beanies Loved
I didn\’t exactly \”hate\” this drama, but definitely was left unphased by the potential romance between the leads and dropped it: Crash Course in Romance. 🙈

#5 – OTP You Didn\’t Think You\’d Adore
The sweetest and most hilarious OTP I remember watching this year is from a past drama: Han-byeol & Kkkkooong from Sh**ting Stars. I liked their chemistry and all the comical interactions. Just adorable!

14
10

That coat is truly fabulous 👍 Aww the OTP in Sh**ting Stars is so sweet!!! 😍

    5
    1

Hahaha, yes, they were both just adorable. 😆
I was so surprised when I watched MOON IN THE DAY, and Kim Youngdae was sooo… clunky in that role. 🤔 He surely has a knack for comical roles like Gong Taesung though! I had a lot of fun watching Sh**ting Stars. 👏😂

      3
      1

I haven’t been watching Moon in the Day, but I’ve been reading recaps and fanwall chatter, and it sounds disappointing 😕 He definitely has a gift for comedy, though! He’s great in rom-coms, and I hope he does more!

        3
        0

Sh**ting Stars was one of my favorite dramas last year! They were adorable, even in marketing videos. I loved the scene where she accidentally sent him all the selfies she’d taken 🤭

    5
    1

LOL! Yes, that scene was cringy adorkable 😂👏😂 I guess everyone remembers making a fool of themselves in front of a crush – for the first time. This definitely triggered those memories for me. 🤣🤣🤣
All was well, once he turned up at her doorstep though 👏🫰😉

      3
      0

I do approve of your choice of the fav OTP you didn’t think you’d adore. I loved SS so much when it aired. I think it was among my top two that year. AND you don’t only get 1 couple but 3!!! What more can one ask for, really.

    1
    1

Oh yes, I just LOVED Lawyer Do & Gibeum! Since their romance felt a lot more grown-up, Taesung & Hanbyeol were “more adorable” in comparison (if that makes any sense? 😂). But I really liked both couples. I wasn’t soooooo sold on the managers’ romance, since I rather got friendship vibes from them. But still: a nice ensemble! 👏💯

      0
      0

I too loved the Sh**ting Stars romance, and I go back to it repeatedly when I need cheering up. Keep seeing Tae-sung dozing morosely on his dressing room couch, wearing some BEAUTIFUL suit, trying to dream up ways to get her attention. He’s a great comic actor.

    1
    1

LOL, yes, he was delightful! Also when he came to work at her office, and her team got annoyed pretty fast and had him do the most awful chores to distract him… (what was up with that “pulling off stickers from delivered parcels”? 😂 Well, he was pretty productive doing it.)

      0
      1

Yes, that was a lovely contrast to the start of the show (when he was at the hair-pulling stage of his crush on her), and was lurking round her desk, reprimanding her for being late etc. I am sure there’d be pressure, in a real entertainment company, for all the staff to suck up to their mega-star, who was basically their meal ticket, and the fact that she doesn’t is very entertaining. I thought it was an underestimated show with plenty of cool characters and much humour. I loved the romance between the lawyer and the reporter too, but not so much the other love affair between the two managers — that relationship seemed a bit too paternal and she kind of got on my nerves.

      1

Thank you for your hard work in researching these. They are already funny on their own but your comments make them funnier. The context in which you use the gifs are like a match made in drama heaven. The cherry on top of the cake. Now I can’t even say cake without thinking of Song Kang.

Ha, I’m not very successful though. This weekend, new episodes will just pile upon unwatched old ones from last week (Samdal-ri for example), so I guess my outcome is the same as yours… 🤔 Only unintentional. 😂
      I clearly need to prioritize.

THE MATCHMAKERS, episode 11
Support group worthy. *snivels* But SO beautiful! 🤧
Go Lady Park! FREE yourself! (And set your DIL free at the same time, mmmmkay? Much appreciated.)

15
9

Hear, hear!! At last she sees what her husband is capable of — I guess she never thought his ruthlessness could strike so close to home.

    5
    2

Indeed… let’s see if it will finally be the turning point in her scheming career, and she will now focus on „the good“ instead. Fingers crossed!

(Ugh her husband is a real 🤬, worse than expected.)

      1
      0

TBH, I would like to think that she has been aware that her husband is a power hungry jerk and brother is an evil moron. And that all HER scheming is so that they don’t sink the family by THEIR hare-brained schemes.
But nothing justifies killing the princess, or trying to get the palace maid to kill herself or attempting to kill the crown prince. Again, I would like to think she was an unwilling participant in those schemes.
But… maybe she will wake up at least now. Cause Soen Dook’s emancipation might actually depend on Mama Park.

      2
      1

Yes, true enough! Unwilling participant or not, she most likely will have to go down for it. But as she really seems to be the mastermind behind all of these schemes (even though the ideas themselves might have originally not be her own, I’ll give her that), just imagining to have her actually on your side would be great. But I think it’s not gonna happen. Rather, she now realizes how bad it all is and how it actually affected her own family, she will regret it and set things straight, so that she can at least somehow save her daughter and Soondeok. 🤔 Would be the only way to open up marriages for candidates, who have been formerly deemed “indecent” after all… (Cue happily ever after, at least for daughter & DIL!)
        🦆👏🦆

        0

So far, Mama Park is a brilliant character. This drama is SO good in so many ways. Hilarious, tragic, heart breaking, heart-fluttering – all the feels, in beautiful packaging.
BUT… having been burnt a few times live watching, I am still wary…

    2
    1

IKR. It has been so good, so far. And really effective at weaving together the different plot lines. I’m remembering when folks were commenting that the monk couldn’t be that good looking for no reason. Sure enough — he has a meaningful role. So that makes me optimistic that the writing will stay strong til the end.

      2
      1

LOL, the beanie hive mind triggered by the looks of an actor. 👏😂

I’m not even sure how many episodes we still have to go! Is it 12 or 14 in total? (I think this wasn’t a 16 episodes drama, but I might be wrong. I’ll gladly be proven wrong…)

@semmavetti Since there is no character yet descending into Hongjo’s Abyss of Lacking Common Sense, I have high hope the writing will stay strong!

        2
        1

True and so fingers crossed, @sonai!
Yo, I still feel cheated that they left Hong Jo a total idiot till the end, with no redemptive arc!
Thankfully, this writer does not seem to think “it is enough for a girl to be pretty and “bright”, brains are over-rated, and who needs a sense of self preservation, saving damsels in distress is the job of knights errant.”
As long as Mama Park continues to be the anti-Hong-Jo AND they do not totally evilize her. We have some really brainy women who DO things instead of having things done to them, so yes, this show is (apart from its sheer beauty) worth having hopes for!

          2
          1

Yes, the writing of the female characters really has to be applauded here! Groaning internally still any time I think of Hongjo and those awful bullying coworkers. 🤐😬😖

#2023RoundUp!

#1 – Female Lead You\’ll Never Forget
For 2023: Unsure. Instantly, I could only think of characters who will stay with me \”for worse\”, because they eroded over time (mostly due to bad writing). Makes me sad.

But I actually want to give this award to a drama from the reserves, which I\’ve watched this year: HYENA\’s Geum-ja (Kim Hye-soo), who will stay with me \”for better\”. Loved her dedication, thoughtfullness, cleverness. Loved how she was unapologetic about her desires, and depicted to be desriable, too. (And to top it of, played by Kim Hye-soo when she was ~50. BRAVO!)

#2 – Male Lead You\’ll Never Forget
For 2023: KING THE LAND\’s Gu Won (Junho). It is what it is, guys. A man cradling a candy king carp. Could have given this award as well to Junho\’s depiction of the Crown Prince/King in THE RED SLEEVE, which I\’ve also watched this year. Different reasons, same actor.

🥹🫰🎉 That furniture! That smile! 😂🥳

I’m getting the *slightest* feeling of FOMO because I haven’t watched CALL IT LOVE though. Would my picks have been different if I did?!?!?! 🤔 Now we will just never know!
But definitely one to add to the top of the watchlist.

      3
      1

Call It Love is likely to walk away with all the beans this year, I think. It had the painful romance angle that My Dearest botched, leads with massive chemistry, three intertwining plot lines that actually all work together, no serial killing, great music…

The pink filter is the main dividing line. If you hate it/can’t un-see it, then the drama is ruined, I fear.

        1
        2

You had me at „massive chemistry“ (and „no killer plot“)! ✅ I’ve definitely noted it down to lean on the heavier side, but once I’m in the mood for that, I’ll surely watch. Winter makes me crave silly fun & swoony romance at the moment though!

I got some kind of feeling for that filter from all the GIFs, and I actually don’t mind that at all. 🤔 I hope. But these things could definitely throw you off, once you notice (and cannot unsee). Thanks for mentioning!

          2
          1

My issue with Call it love was not the pink/sepia filter. In fact, that drama has a great cinematography and very well planned frames.
My problem was the pace, especially in the middle of the drama.

            3
            0

@IsaGC actually because I live watched it, the anticipation for the weekly episodes was so high that the draggy pacing did not feel like an issue. Of course in a binge that aspect becomes more focused. Pink filter was not a creative choice I endorsed and was looking forward to seeing his white shirt actually looking white. 🤣

          1

It’s not that Junho as an actor does a bad job–it’s that going into this moving because you trust that nothing can go wrong if there’s Junho simply isn’t wise!

I don’t think I have an inner 13-year-old boy to be fair–I hated too many of those in my day.

            2

Unnecessary to mention, I’m now scared to ask what this movie is. Your description sounds both hilariously intriguing and mildly unsettling. 😂

Oh, @sonai, you can click that link of mine to take you to a whole recent DB review (you can read or ignore my personal comment as you like). It’s like a “Porky’s” type thing–all teen male hormones. Some like it, some don’t!

            0

@attiton Ah, I remember reading that article and quickly discarding said movie on the not-for-me list. Just didn’t remember the title! Thanks for the heads up.

Too much good stuff left for me to watch than to go down that road. (Rather go down that road to SAMDALRI. In fact, I just hit play!)

Well I didn’t finish KtL and being on DB long enough has made me blacklist Twenty.

Hahaha, yes we know you haven’t been a teenager in far too long and never a teenaged boy with raging hormones. But there is a definite audience for such “bawdy humor”.

          0

Haha, true! I’ve watched three dramas featuring Junho this year, and all have been excellent. (Those mentioned and Chief Kim.) Good picks of his roles, and overall very good actor! 👏

        2
        1

Ah! You’ve completed a trinity. Do put Just Between Lovers in your watchlist too in the “must watch” category. If you survived TRS, JBL should be a piece of cake.

          1
          1

Oh, I’ve watched that already! 😃 Just not this year… cannot remember when, exactly. But remember his perm. That hairdo wasn’t the best one on him. But the drama was good!

            1
            0

Aaaawwww! HYENA is over!?! But where do I get my lovely banter and colorful tracksuits fix now? Sigh. It was a good, GOOD show. Glad I watched. Inexplicably craving Auntie Anne’s, but it’s all good.

13
19

Such a good show and so criminally underrated. Kim Hye-soo and Ju Ji-hoon are easily one of my favourite kdrama pairings.

    4
    1

I don’t think it’s underrated. 🤷‍♀️ But then going by internet one’s favourite dramas are rarely highly rated or praised or popular.

      1
      2

It’s strange, because it wasn’t on my radar either – even when it aired 🤔 I think it was promoted to me by Netflix, but since I didn’t know anything about it, and Netflix blurbs nor trailers really do it justice, I just didn’t bother.

I’m a bit ashamed about that now. lol!

        2
        1

I find it somewhat not known compared to some of its contemporaries. Sure, it got decent live viewership numbers, but I don’t really see it pop up in conversations or, say, listicles of ‘Best Law kdramas’ or ‘Kdrama couples with the best chemistry”. So I do think it’s a tad under-discussed 😅.

        2
        0

It was such a a good show all the way to the end. These two had such terrific chemistry.
If I have to complain it would be the lack of some more hot kisses in the later episodes 😂🙃
I mean, if you could kiss like that once you can definitely do it again right???

    6
    2

It was my understanding that Covid actually disrupted the filming of this drama…potentially reducing the sexytimes. Is that also your understanding, @mayhemf?

      4
      1

Oh my, that would explain *a lot*. I mean their chemistry was OFF THE CHARTS. It really was kind of a let down that you had to HOPE in the end they really did end up together again. But in the very last scene he does hold her hand, so that was a *huge* relief. 😆 Wouldn’t have minded more obvious hints about it either. *eyebrow dance*

      1

Ewww! Yes! Whyyyyyyy?! I dunno what’s worse, Subway or Pizza Alvolo. 🤢 Auntie Anne’s looked positively snacky – and weird at the same time. Couldn’t really decide what it actually was, that they were eating. Pretzel sticks? Churros? (But I’m sure it’s bad, too. 🥳🙃😂)

        1
        1

Those pretzel sticks look WAY better when Junho eats them. Case in point, I actually wonder what it would taste like to dip a pretzel in some sort of creamy, yellow dip? I mean what’s that and who really wants that?

          2
          4

So, for research purposes 🤓, in what role would Junho have had Auntie Anne‘s? Because I surely don’t remember it from KTL (that’s all just a Nespresso blur) – but I might be wrong! Was it Chief Kim? 🤔 (It seems likely. 😂)

„Yellow creamy dip“ sounds… cheesy. 😬 No thanks!

            1
            0

Oh! OH…oooohhhh…have you not seen Junho’s eating in Chief Kim???? IT’S MAJESTIC…and includes dipping carbs in sauce relatively frequently: https://youtu.be/Y7MZCIG5lh8

God, I could watch him eat all day long. It’s like Junho’s most bestest acting talent, making food look delicious. That, and it draws attention to his mouth, of course 😉

            3
            0

@attiton *Of course* I remember Junho‘s – uh – gluttony in Chief Kim 😂 I just don’t remember the PPL involved, so I guess I’ll need to level up!

There were some nice nods to this role in KTL that had me cackling.

THE MATCHMAKERS, episode #8 (wait, already?!)
Ugh, how swoony was this?!?! Gotta love Samsoon & Soongu (get a grip!). How come I’m rooting A BIT for Lady Park? She’s just on the wrong team…😬

Yeah, she should realize that her husband and brother are two idiots and let the King being the King!

    3

Yes, she should use her talents for Team Good! The King was adorable with his son.

The only thing that keeps me from rolling my eyes every time they meet for scheming is: the left state minister wears the most distracting hat. Looks like Dragonball hair. 😂 (Seems to be a thing in sageuks tho, still find it funny. Which possibly makes me … an ignoramus? 😅)

Uwaaaaah, it was SO good! Had to stop mid episode and thought to post about it, then couldn’t and had to watch until the very end first.

Can’t wait for today’s episode. Fighting!

Ahaha, yes, his dry training on the table was *chef’s kiss*
Gotta applaud Rowoon for this role, again. He’s a great fit for it. 😆

LOL, that is exactly the reason why I could never be an actor.

On set: „SOMEONE stop this woman from cackling uncontrollably!“ *collective eye roll from whole crew*

Chapeau to all having their giggles under control. 😅

@sonai I love to see actors having a laugh on set (or stage in direct).

PMR Episode #9
Awesome tantrums. Just 왜, WHY the sudden lack of MIL and appropriate amounts of romance? 🤔
But appreciate grandpa stepping into the revenge game all like

This scene is so funny 😂 I love Nam Joo Hyuk in this show, this role is perfect for him. I dropped Vigilante recently although I really meant to finish it. Maybe it’s just me, but NJH’s character gives off a desperation and depression vibe that is sad to look at. I have watched dark shows before and felt that while the situation was dark, the character I cared for was not consumed by sadness and dark thoughts. Is it because the actor NJH has sad eyes and he often seems somehow lonely, and that is translated into his character?!

I really liked him in his WF role! I was also surprised how they picked such a heavy topic (which he conveyed well!), but still got the show to stay overall funny and light – thanks to Bokjoo & all sidekicks.

To be honest it’s the only drama I have watched so far with NJH, but I was tempted to have a look at Vigilante just for him. Alas, it’s streaming only on D+ (I think), which I don’t have, so… but maybe this heaviness was actually what the PD wanted for Vigilante? Would have been hard for me to finish then, too. (Even more now in the dark, rainy season.)

If I’d not been a lurker at the time I watched this drama…I would have been called to post SO MANY GIFS of this show. Including one, very special, fan service gif.

NO SEON-HA you DON’T make FAN SERVICE gifs of the best kisses in k-dramaland. YOU DO NOT. They’ll take away your “classy dame” license if you do… 😁

*glances over spectacles and clicks pen* You know, sometimes it’s not a choice. Because: BOTH THINGS CAN BE TRUE. It’s totally acceptable to hang your Classy Dame License right over the drawer full of fan service GIFs. *taps notepad with pen* Just don’t let the expectations crush you.*

      * Please make the GIFs! 😂😂👏👏

        I mean…OK?? Here’s the real gut-wrenching part, though–not the kiss. I hope you’re past episode 8!!!!

His resigned, pained face–desperate for her attention–is everything.

          💯👏👏👏 Thank you!

And no, I’m not yet at episode 8, but as per dramaland rules I’m anticipating *something* to happen in that episode 🥳😂👏 I was asking totally aware of having myself potentially spoilered. No one will be sued over this (unfortunately?!), only applauded! 😉

PMR episode 7:
I spotted 3 wedding dresses on the mums. Yes. Why the hell not… 👏👏👏 Sad to report pants still traumatic, but drama 💯 Awesome reveals!

Ooooh, I can hardly wait! [Quickly rearranges entire day’s schedule to get to the TV sooner.]

I thought Snippy Sister looked beautiful in that lovely white wedding dress at the wedding last week, even if it was hilariously and evilly wrong to wear it.

I’ve been to a wedding where the *bride’s mother* wore an ivory, full-length, beaded lace gown with a train, and hair ornaments that looked like a tiara. The bride (my friend) had not known her mother was going to wear that. It was … special.

Oh my gosh Elinor – that’s crazy!! Poor bride; I hadn’t realized people actually did things like that 😅

And ep 7 is CRAZY GOOD, once again!!

Nooooo I just typed a very long reply to you, Elinor, and it got deleted due to a blacklisted word. I was rambling on how bad the situation must have been at your friend’s wedding, how the mum behaved inappropriate, and how the situation could only have been saved by a hearty e m e r -g e n – c y red wine spill on the mum’s dress. 😂 It sounds like real life Makyang, it calls for a real life Makyang save, LOL! How awkward…

There’s a bridal dressed showdown between the mums!!! It’s awesome! Sadly no weird hand gestures this time 😂
