This Time it’s More Like Zen Annoyance

OMG you guys.

So by now you’ve all heard my big server upgrade moan-and-groan story. Over the weekend, I upgraded from shared hosting (which was killing me with limiting my CPU restrictions, which build up very quickly when highly trafficked). I’d outgrown my little shared hosting plan and needed my own space.

And now, thanks to Coffee Prince, in TWO DAYS I have outgrown my basic VPS plan and have had to upgrade once again. I can’t be too upset because I say with pride that I have entirely Coffee Prince’s popularity to blame, and who can hold a grudge against that?

In the ONE HOUR that I’ve posted the Tenth Cup summary, my site went down five times. I know this because I was worried it would max out and have been closely monitoring my levels. The instant the server overloaded (ran out of memory) I restarted it. Sorry for the choppy hour, guys.

I’ve since upgraded to the next level with much more ram, and now, instead of operating at 98% levels of capacity (I freaked out when the techie pointed out the chart to me), I’m at a comfortable 53%. Phew.

I REALLY think this is going to be the last of my issues. And rock on, Coffee Prince!!

(By the way, just in case you’re wondering about this “zen” business, I commented in my darkest hours of techie-related aggravation that I was trying to be zen. But that if things did not improve, I would have to resort to inventing a new violent strain of zen.)

yeah! blame it on the Coffee Prince popularity... but you are so popular also, your great work is really appreciated! If there's a reward for this, it's knowing how people are so amazed and grateful for what your precious hours (i know you had cashed out also) is shared to us... have a rest girl and again thank you!

^^ Gail, the #1 show has been As much as Heaven and Earth, I think. From what I know, it is a daily show, M-F, and so it has a following and thus usually dominates the ratings in Korea and Seoul (correct me if I'm wrong, Javabeans).

It has been my experience over the adventures of many kdramas, that ratings don't really mean much when it comes to the real art :), often its just the trend of the moment that unfortunately can affect how many people get to watch an amazing show. I'm happy that CP is up there, but I'd be watching it either way!

Earlier today when i visted ur site and i was reading coffee prince ep 9 and chaoter 11 and 12 of the novel, i saw that you had 165 on at the time.... that seemed like a big deal to me because in the time that i have visited this blog i've never seen such a high number of people on at the same time.... well i guess it wont be long before you'll have to upgrade again.

Aye, sorry about the trouble you have to go through... I'm one of your numerous Coffee Prince summary fans causing the crash I guess. Eeps! *apologetic*

I really have to thank you for providing fast summaries after each Coffee Prince episodes, it's them I count on for trying to comprehend the koreans speaking-only episodes I see on Youtube (The ones with eng subs come out only later. But I can't hold on till they come out. So I make do with watching the unsubbed ones. Heh).

While I'm now in the midst of learning the Korean language, till I am conversant in it, I'll still have to continue depending on your site and your summaries to tide me through Coffee Prince and all future Kdramas!

Great work, Javabeans! Many thanks!!!! :)

the heaviest traffic of all.... rush hour! rush hour! especially on tuesday and wednesday huh... i've been waiting since 7:30 pm comment time and i was hoping to see the "tenth cup" as soon as you post it but unfortunately i only saw your post when i checked your site meter and was surprised to see the "tenth cup URL" there.... well, you have 3 more weeks to go for coffee prince and hopefully the traffic on your site will be back to normal -- but again that depends --- you're more famous than coffee prince! keep it up javabeans!

thanks for the upgrade. i think that aside from the popularity of coffee prince your eloquence in summarizing episodes are so awesome and allows readers to understand on a deeper level what's going on (especially when we don't all speak korean). so thanks for the hard work and i look forward to more from you!

Hehe, that cracked me up the way you wrote it, I understand like a micro bit of all that tech stuff, but I'm glad you got it resolved without having to take out the violent zen!!!

Are you kidding, it's not because of Coffee Prince. It is because YOU are an awesome, witty, intelligent writer. But thanks to the popularity of Coffee Prince now more addicts are aware of this wonderful site . Dramabeans is very much like a crack addiction for me. I can't go a few hours without it, checking it to see if anything new have been posted.
Bottom line, Dramabeans kicks ass. Don't ever think about abandoning us. We'll die!

Thanks everyone! At least with the upgrade I don't have to worry about crashing my site, even at peak hours. (The tech guy originally said I shouldn't have problems on my initial plan with my traffic levels because it would be fine unless, say, hundreds of people all clicked on the same link at the same time. The highest number of people I've seen here at once was 202, and that was in the first hour after CP 10 was posted, so I was like, um, what if they do?)

Anon #10, yes it costs money to pay for the hosting service for this site. A HUGE THANK YOU to those who've donated to help me out! You guys are awesome. It keeps me motivated to keep writing. ;) (And if anyone knows a Blogads sponsor, I'd be much indebted!)

Javabeans, I think you should switch over to SurpassHosting. I've seen a lot of good reviews on their service and they're not that pricey. I hope everything works out with your site in the future though. :)

Sara, thanks for the rec. I took a look and they are a bit cheaper, but the difference isn't that great for the plan I would need. If I ever need to upgrade again, I'll definitely consider it.

And I have to say, the silver lining in having all these issues is that I've learned a TON about computers, servers, hosting, and websites. If everything had gone perfectly well from the start I suppose I'd still be in the dark about the way things operate. So the glass is just barely more than half full.
