Ironic, or just a weird trend?

Apparently singer (and sometimes actress) Park Jiyoon just posted these pics (left) on her cyworld of herself dressed up as a man. Is it news? Hardly. (You know Korean entertainment media is having a sloooow news day when pictures on a celeb cyworld merit news; but that beef is for another day.) Okay, there’s a bit in there about her SBS drama Bichunmu with Joo Jin Mo being broadcast in 2008, but that wasn’t the point of the article.

But maybe for once media isn’t exaggerating when they say Yoon Eun Hye’s Coffee Prince-inspired fashions are setting some trends. When actress Park Shin Hye cut her hair short in a boyish style not long ago (reportedly for her role in the series Ggakdugi, aka “Radish Kimchee”), everyone immediately pointed to the Eun Chan comparison.

So, what’s my point? (You mean I have to have one?) Park Jiyoon was, interestingly enough, a name that was widely reported earlier this year as having been cast in Coffee Prince — in the Yu Ju role which ended up going to Chae Jung Ahn. And, of course, she also released an album several years ago titled “Man” with its title track, “I’m A Man,” and donned androgynous (but pretty), gender-bendery clothes to go with it.

SONG OF THE DAY

Park Jiyoon – “가져요.” This song isn’t from her “Man” album, although this one is.

hmm.. i wish they had more frontal pictures of her face. It's all from an angle! ANway.. i'm still not quite sure about the trend. Granted, many of those korean women look fabulous with or without short hair, but it's the androgynous part of this whole trend i'm not quite understanding. WHYY? but i personally wish I had the facial structure to look good with short hair. :\

it is always a trend to follow what gets notice the most in any genre. the short hair is in now, but give it time, and the long hair will return, or even a certain color. we humans like to get notice, so naturaly seeking what the media presents to us what the "hot item" is for this month, we will do what is necessary to expose oursleves to that certain item.

Weird huh?!? it started with Hana Kimi TW, then CP and then Hana Kimi JP of these dramas where heroines pretend like men. Hana Kimi TW was very popular last year, but nothing compared to CP. I never heard anybody from TW dressing like a man (or probably not as publicized as the lady above), i guess probably because Ella doesn't really look feminine in that drama. Maybe its a combination of the YEH effect and the Korean culture?!? YEH made Eun Chan look like a pretty boy... a very feminine looking boy inspite of her superb acting. I'd like to think that Korean women are emulating more Eun Chan's character and not just because everybody is doing it. In a way maybe dressing like her would project the same stern, honest and funky character YEH has ingrained to people. Hmm... me and my idealism.

I think it started with the feminine looking boys in K-pop scene. Especially the boy bands that get younger and younger each time I see a new one come about. I don't think this is a recent trend....These slender, gentle looking boys made me wonder what happened to macho-ness and all that supposedly real men. They are still idolized anyhow by lots of fan-girls despite not being the conventional idea of men. I think those kind of image became a norm and I got used to it...Perhaps it is a way of telling us that the society is accepting of different definitions of "men" and "women". Perhaps it is a way of accepting men who are not muscular and has gentler features. Perhaps it is a way of accepting women who are more on the boyish-side and does not have the feminine curves.

To each his own, i guess. I think Coffee Prince may have opened up an outlet for artistic self expression. Looking androgynous enable the individual to cross boundaries and experiment. Europe has been doing this for a while now, isn't it? Yay for progressive Korea. On the other hand, maybe everyone is just caught up in the latest fashion must-do. Plus, it's only hair ... it will grow back (in a few months when the next trend comes around).

I've always felt a vague liking for Park Jiyoon because for being such a pretty girl, she seemed very low-key. Which I'm aware is an impression I could've very well just made up in my head, heh.

esyl, it's actually 'javabeans' -- that was the handle i had on the original blog at wordpress. 'Dramabeans' arose when i moved to my own domain and had to pick a new name -- it seemed appropriate enough. ;) But i respond to pretty much anything, hehe.

if this is really a trend, I feel that it's a refreshing one...just pity I can't pull off the short hair look without looking like Moon Face!

Tell you the truth, after Coffee Prince I chop off my long hair which took me years to keep. Whether it is the influence of My Chan or just my knack for a change, well ... a bit of both I guess. I just decided that I wanted a different style, but not as short as My Chan's (my husband dislike it too short). I guess Coffee Prince does influence a little the recent trend. Who doesn't get drawn to the modern days fairy tales? Whether we like it or not, or whether our grandmother's time or now, we are still as romantic at heart as they were in their time. That's why Coffee Prince and The Vineyard Man appeal to us so much. Call me romantic but I always love a good story with a good ending, and at the end of a hard day's work, I could laze around and unwind.

shucks! i also had my hair chopped short after 6 years of having it long. I think i got influenced by CP also. But i'm not regretting it coz it is much easier to manage and i think my hair got thicker. Now, i'm maintaining a short hair, i mean i'm not letting it grow past my shoulder. I'm lovin' it (^-^)

Hmmm. I'm feeling that CP fever too ^_^ I have very long hair now.. I think I want to chop it off, for a change he he.. I think being feminine has nothing to do with having a long hair, it really depends solely on your character :-)
