Hello, frumpy lady

Some early Bulhandang/Robbers pics of Lee Da Hae‘s character “Dallae” in bygone days in her wedding dress. The character loses her husband (judging from the dress, either sometime in the ’70s or in a frump-disco-era time-warp zone), and now lives with her daughter and mother-in-law after her husband dies.

I wonder if the title should more accurately be “Con Man” in the singular tense, since it seems to refer to Jang Hyuk’s scoundrel character… Apparently her love turns him into a new man or something. Erm. Not really feeling it.

(I’ve been hard on Lee Da Hae lately, but it’s just because she’s been so blah. She was good in what I’ve seen of Green Rose; I loved her in My Girl even though I agree with complaints that she was too over-acty. Still, I found her cute and I loved the story and the humor. She was over-acty in Hello Miss (disregarding the mediocre story) even though she was great when she WASN’T trying to act cute. Unfortunately, she tries to act cute almost all the freaking time. She really doesn’t need to. You know how some people are cool because they don’t care about being cool? She’s like the opposite of that. If she were able to let go of her vanity just a little (okay, a whole lot), she could be a really great actor.)

I feel the same way about her overbearing cutesy acting style!! It takes away from the credibilty of the characters she plays bc she seems to be consciously portraying that image instead of just naturally being that way.

As a result, I just pretty much avoid any drama that she is in. So, I doubt I would watch Bandit even if it had a more original plot.

Strangely, I love Lee Da Hae's cute roles for that reason alone. When I'm stressed out, I find that the artificially silly world that she creates provides a comic relief to the real one I'm in. I don't think I'll watch Bandit though. I really can't stand the male actor. He seems so arrogant and full of himself it makes me want to throw up.

Fair assessment. She definitely has ways to improve...but I haven't lost hope and I surely don't avoid dramas just because she's in it. Prove me right, Da Hae!

I like her cuteness, but I want her to take a new role where she is not at all cute, she is a either incredibly sad character, or a serious bad ass. I want her to prove that she can extend herself and b serious. Cute is nice, but it can only do so much. I will of course be checking the show out for LDH, and we will see what happens.

Agreed on everything re: her overacting, but I still have to say she is awesome at crying. I think she's the best crier -- it never fails to get to me, even when I'm totally expecting it.

I also think sometimes the acting cute makes for occasional hilarious moments (I laughed so much at the how-to-make-kimchi-mandu scene in H!M), so I forgive her for it.

Oh yes, she's a fantastic crier. When she's crying (or acting "natural") she's brilliant. When she's being cute, she often walks the razor's edge between adorable (most of My Girl) and "look at me i'm so CUTE ooh CUTE CUTE puppies pretty giggle! don't you just love me and my baby-talk voice oooh! oppa oppa! bouncy balls and perky little animals *vomit*"

note, she's definitely not the only actress like this. but she's probably the most talented one who's like this and therefore the biggest waste when she caters to her self-indulgent vanities.

Ah beans, you've indeed been quite harsh on our lady here. And as a fan of Da Hae, I did feel a bit offended. But I forgive you, because you're right about what you wrote..

I thought perhaps she mastered YR so well in MG that ppl tend to stereotype her..giving her cutesy and acty/OTT roles, now making it too much for us to endure.

I just hope that Robbers or Bandits or whatever it will be called afterwards can change ppl's minds..

loooooool at "look at me i’m so CUTE ooh CUTE CUTE puppies pretty giggle! don’t you just love me and my baby-talk voice oooh! oppa oppa! bouncy balls and perky little animals *vomit*”"

i think she should stick to more serious roles or something closer to my girl ... theres a fine line between being capable and ridiculous...and she definetly crossed it with Hello Miss!... hope "Robbers" aka "Bandits" doesn't make her ridiculously annoying as her former acting role did...ugh...

you are right javabeans...she's sooo capable..hope she would explore that more...

After My Girl, I love her. Lol, I thought she was so adorable even though her acting in MG seems to be more like that of an Anime. I like the main guy in MG though. He acted really well in funny scenes even without to be too much. ^^

However, after Hello Miss - like a few episodes - I started to get tired of that cutesy way of her acting. It made me feel that she wasn't being herself - because she was acting a role of course - but sometimes one can still be natural in a role. I thought she was trying too hard in looking cute. She is gorgeous as she is, why try so hard?

Bandit, I'm quite confused with the story but I'm not too interested in it. These days it takes a lot to interest me in a long drama. I think I'll try to watch at least an episode or I might not even get to it.

she seems to be a bit of a one-note...always in cutesy, lighthearted(ish) dramas. this one sounds the same. i would love to see her in something different, even though i don't like "dramatic" dramas all that much.

I think you were fair in your critique of Da Hae. I'm a bit burnt out on the cutesy. I really enjoy Jang Hyuk’s acting. I'm not feeling the story and will probably wait to see what others say before I even attempt to watch it

I think Hello! Miss would be her weakest role to date, but I think she has a chance to save herself. I think she took this role to get back to being versatile. Hello! Miss was just a bad piece of work. I agree, she was overdoing it.
But this is a girl who blew everyone away in Heaven's Fate and has not turned back since then. My Girl just made her a household name.

This seems to have a more dramatic feel to it, so I think she may prove her detractors wrong. Jang Hyuk is also one amazing actor, and for the first time she's paired with someone intense. Her last leading men aren't really the greatest actors of all, we gotta admit. I'll wait until this is shown. I doubt she can play a naive cutesy type being a struggling single mom/widow.

lol at her frumpy wedding dress. I will always love this girl, though.

“look at me i’m so CUTE ooh CUTE CUTE puppies pretty giggle! don’t you just love me and my baby-talk voice oooh! oppa oppa! bouncy balls and perky little animals *vomit*”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

"If she were able to let go of her vanity just a little (okay, a whole lot), she could be a really great actor."

Hmm. One of my friend knows someone who used to be really close to her and according to him she's really pretentious. But I don't want to pay attention to stuffs said about someone I don't know personally. It may be jealousy and frustration coming from a guy who's feeling dejected ever since she got famous.

The first time I watched my girl, I found the show funny but was a bit annoyed by the cutesy act as well. People loved that show so much, I only read praises up 'till now, I thought I was the only one who felt she acted a bit toooooo cute it didn't feel natural. I guess since you critic dramas honestly without fearing the "fans attacks" ( by the way ripgal you're the only 'soft fan' I've ever seen. Most of the time, when I dare say something negative on an actor someone's a fan of, I regret it very much because they start pestering me non stop either on forums or in real life for at least half an hour. Are they crazy or what? Anybody should be free to have his/her own opinion. You can argue all right but they're humans not God! They go to the loo as well -_-)

Still you can't really blame a star to become big headed if everyday all you hear " She's so pretty", "I love you" blablabla...

These shots are not really representative of the drama... Who care about the marriage? There's marriage in almost all dramas, they could have chosen other shots to show so that we can at least guess a bit how they're gonna do it...

Thank you for the compliment La Plume.. ^_^
I do get into a defensive mode when ppl start criticising my fav actors and actresses.. but most of them are constructive comments, so it's no big deal. I do rant about other actors whom ppl think are great and excellent, but not to me...therefore I just take it easily. If I was younger..a few years back..I'd lash out at them..but now, it's just yeah..it all goes back to what I see of her, and if they don't see it, nvm I don't really care.

About Da Hae being pretentious, I think I've read a similar comment saying that Da Hae's not what we always see on screen..and she's just faking it. I don't know what to say about that.. It's probably true or probably not, cos I don't know her personally. But based on my observations (well just from news and stuff..), she's not the pretentious type and in fact it's the other way round, she's just the way she is on screen and off screen. But again, even if she is really as what your friend's described..I guess I still can live with it. hehehe.. cos what, we're humans eh?

I thought her over-acty status went well with My Girl... just because that's what her character was supposed to be. I loved her from beginning to end in that drama.

HOWEVER, overacty all the time is terrible, and I think ripgal is right in saying that after My Girl people tried to stereotype her into that role.

I don't know if this one catches my attention, but I guess we'll see. =]

awww...javabeans..you're a bit harsh on LDH here. I'm not her big fan or anything but I thought she did a good job in My Girl..maybe a tiny bit overacting but it fits her role perfectly. Hello Miss was just a mess...that I agree. I still think she is a talented actress..she just needs to find a good role. We all know there are tons of worse actresses out there in the K-drama world.
Her choice with Robbers might be a good thing since people were getting tired of her cutesy role. I doubt she'll do a lot of cutesy acting in Robbers/Bandits so you might actually be able to enjoy her performance lol. In any case I am looking forward to Robbers/Bandits.

Ouch. I fear for what you might say about Sung Yuri in the near future. Not an avid fan of LDH, but i thought that she was fine in My Girl. Like many have commented, I accepted her exaggerated performance there because her role was similar to Jae Hee in DGCH.

It's interesting to see if she continues to exhibit the same saccharine-ness that we've come to identify her with. I'd think that most actors would want to dissociate themselves from any character as soon as the work is done for fear of stereotyping. And the "serious" actors tend to pick future roles at least somewhat different from previous ones to stretch their acting abilities. So i don't get the reason for the cutesy image that she wants to cultivate. I agree that it could be tiresome if that's all she's capable of years from now.

The way i see it, could this possibly be due to (1) lack of quality scripts, (2) poor career choices or (3) the desire to stay within her comfort zone? I mean she's young so i'll give her the benefit of time and hope that she'll eventually maximize her acting potential. I guess we'll have to watch Bandits to see. But if that turns out to be another typical bad-boy-reformed-by-the-love-of-a-good-woman, I think that the person I'll feel most badly for is actually Jang Hyuk.

I agree. I hope the writers have planned something better. Jang Hyuk's so capable - please don't stick him in another cliche melodrama.

If Jang Hyuk turns out to be this reformed bad boy it'll be a repeat of his role in Thank You (somewhat). Could we not go down that path again? This is only one Gi Seo...

It is too much to hope for when I'm wishing to see another refreshing Korean drama like Soulmate?

Hello! Ohayo!

Read with rapt interest the comments said and done. To me, LDH is purely on the journey to discover the range of her acting potential. She has indeed attempted a no. of role characters. Check her website for the repetoire of dramas she was cast in. 'My Girl' is undeniably my all-time favourite. Her perfect tandem with Lee Dong Wook must have chalked up her popularity and her male leads. I would not straight away 'shut-down' my watch of 'Robbers' just because she didn't live up to my expectations in Hello! Miss. Romantic comedies cannot stay and hold the rage all the time so to speak. The taste buds of watching audience will invariably change. A return to period dramas on TV screen seems to have a gaining-momentum following these days. So let's give LDH a break!
Bye!

when i first read the plot, "man meets a single mother",
i thought, "oh no, don't tell me it's the same plot as Thank You."
but now i think otherwise because of the trailers that i've seen.
it makes me really hyped for this drama,
especially since LDH is one of my fave actresses.
yes, i do admit that she does act very cutesy, but i also thought that she needed to do that since her characters WERE cutesy.
