Yoon Kye-sang offered JTBC drama Last

JTBC is prepping a new drama titled Last, with an intriguing premise that deals with “the pecking order of Seoul Station’s homeless.” Yoon Kye-sang (Full Sun) is considering the lead role, and the offer’s out to Seo Ye-ji (Superdaddy Yeol, Records of a Night Watchman) to co-star with him.

Last, like everything these days, is based on a webtoon, and I’ve read mostly positive things about it; I read the first several chapters to get a sense of the tone, and it’s got an interestingly grim, suspenseful vibe. The main character, Tae-ho (which is the character being considered by Yoon Kye-sang) starts out as a sharp fund manager who is expecting a massive payday to come in, only to have a deal go bad and ruin him and his partner, to the tune of many millions. They’ve got scary gangster investors clamoring for their money back and seemingly no way out, and Tae-ho’s partner kills himself in despair. Tae-ho is also feeling cornered and desperate after losing everything (hence the homelessness), but he vows to not let this bad deal kill him and works his way back.

In the webtoon, Tae-ho has a girlfriend who’s also his partner’s little sister, and while the casting articles don’t say so explicitly, I am guessing that she’s the role that Seo Ye-ji is up for. It’s not clear whether Tae-ho was set up for failure, but he’s so convinced that his plan was foolproof that the story hints at that possibility. It’s a plot that makes me think of Story of a Man and its hero’s trajectory, which is never a bad thing since I loved that show. (That drama’s lead is ruined when a mastermind manipulates the stock market; he then bounces back from rock bottom to avenge the brother who died as a result, seeking to beat the villain at his own game).

There are fleeting mentions of Lee Beom-soo (Triangle) and Park Ye-jin (Mr. Back) being offered roles as well, though no explanation of which ones. Last does not currently have an airdate or timeslot scheduled, and it’s in the synopsis revision stage, so it sounds like it’s still early in the planning process. But from what I’ve read so far, I’m intrigued by the hook and think the casting would be spot-on; I tend to prefer Yoon Kye-sang in quirky rom-com roles (Best Love, Who Are You) but do have faith that he’d be great in grittier thriller-esque roles (Full Sun, Poongsan). For now, we’ll have to await further updates to see how casting shakes out.

I am guessing Lee Beom Soo will be the Seoul mob boss villain, if he is cast (good idea right now, after the success of 'The Divine Move'). As for Park Ye Jin, I hope it's not another "cold lady" role. I've seen her in the delightfully kooky 'Head' and she is really wasted in such drama roles.

And Seo Ye Ji, I only have 'Night Watchman's Journal' to go by, so I am veeery worried, but who knows, since everyone sucked in that drama. I need to (reluctantly) continue watching 'Superdaddy Yeol' and see if she has more to offer.

And well, Yoon Kye Sang I've also only seen once and don't have much an opinion on, but he has a long, solid career so I assume he's just fine for the part. It's the writer who is worrying me. 'IRIS' was a fresh concept, but also lousy show, so...

Seo Ye Ji was actually pretty hilarious in Potato Star. She certainly plays over-entitled, rich brats well is all I can say.

She overacted in 'Night Watchman's Journal', but at least her face moves and she has charisma. And a nice voice. I do think she has potential, compared to this new wave of talentless newbies. But for a lead in what will probably be a fancy thriller/melodrama? Let's see. Maybe she can.

"this new wave of talentless newbies"

Orion, love your turn of phrase but hate the recent trend in kdramas.

FULL SUN super fan here!!! I loooooove Full Sun, rare case that the melodrama genre is respected, and executed the way it should be. (I mean I'm a SUPER fan! ♥)

And Yoon Kye-sang and Lee Beom-soo, it's the MOST perfect name mentions combo in one article. ;-D

:) It makes it so much better when you find people who enjoyed the same things you did. It's why I like Dramabeans so much. Great to meet all of you!

Yes! Full Sun was solid and underrated. I loved it. It makes for a good re-watch too.

Me too! He was quite good in Full Sun, I thought he over acted in some scenes, and was too intense, but still tolerable. Full Sun was a well written, well cast drama with one of the most beautiful cinematography I've ever seen, and I mourned the dismal ratings. I would be happy to see him in something else if he signs on.

I am quite impressed with JTBC dramas as of lately. I not into crime dramas, but this sounds promising.

Funny, because RIGHT NOW it's the opposite for me.

"Innocence" feels so much like a staple mainstream show with uninspired production values. At the same time, SBS broadcasts "Grapevines" that has jtbc-flavour in spades (and is the most exciting thing I've EVER seen on the big three).

Assuming Yoon Kye Sang and Lee Beom Soo is cast, this sounds good.

It all sounds awesome except for Seo Ye-ji being cast as the female lead. Yoon Kye-sang has the acting chops and gravitas to excel in this kind of a role; SYJ is still very weak as an actress and has almost no gravitas.

Why do all good dramas go to cable networks? Are prime networks unable to come up with a good plot? They have enough money to make the most out of a plot, but instead we get cheesy dramas about vampires or poor man's Romeo & Juliet scenarios.

I prefer Yoon Kye Sang in quirky romcom too, so... not sure about this. I watched Full Sun because of my love for him, which ended up being a snooze fest... but maybe when the show gets further along in the process it'll get my attention.

I love Yoon Kye Sang and what he picks. I'll follow him all over. This drama sounds good as well and I also like Lee Beom Soo. I am unfamiliar with the casting offer for the female lead, though. That's fine, though. Probably for the best lol.

You don't want to see her in her girl-scout-native American princess costume from 'Night Watchmen' until you've see her in something good, first. The wig was like something out of a high school play, she had insipid dialogue, and the director has her just stand around the set a lot.

I've read so many things about that drama and none of them good, lmao. It's so comical now.

The Native American girl scout princess was Go Sung Hee, unless I missed one lousy outfit change. Seo Ye Ji is thankfully slightly less frustrating to watch there, or maybe as frustrating, but in a less facepalm inducing way way.

Go Sung Hee is soooo BAD to the bone. She can't act her way out of a barrel. At least Seo Yeji is decent. i've seen her in Potato Star, NWJ, and Super Daddy Yeol, she's not yet a good actress but at least decent. Go Sung Hee is just horrible -_-

OMG the synopsis sounds so good! I've seen a few articles on blogs before about how awesome would it be if the webtoon Last got made into a kdrama. And then there were some rumours. And now the rumours are true - and better, Seo Yeji will feature in it!!! I'm so happyyyyy

Does not sound interesting from your article. I love him. He is a solid actor, but she is unbearable. She was so bad in Night Watchman Journal. She is not a lead material, not by a long shot.

Omg Seo Ye Ji new drama!! People who have only watched Nightwatchman's Journal might have a bad impression on her because that drama sucks. However, i think she can be a good actress in the future. I love her in Potato Star and Super Daddy Yeol XD Fighting!
