Gong Hyo-jin, Jo Jung-seok for KBS rom-com Jealousy Incarnate

Aieee, this would be such a cute pairing. Come on drama gods, let’s make it happen! There’s a new KBS romantic comedy in the works from the writer of Miss Korea and Pasta, and Gong Hyo-jin (The Producers) is being courted for a reunion with her. The series is called Jealousy Incarnate, and Jo Jung-seok (Oh My Ghostess) is up to play her leading man. I can already smell the petty hijinks a mile away. Oh what fun we’ll have!

The new project from writer Seo Sook-hyang is a comedy about relationships that’s set in the world of broadcast news. Jo Jung-seok is up for the role of a star reporter and news anchor, a macho type with the perfect specs and the brains to back them up. He’s handsome and so eloquent that he instills trust, but he’s also a veteran reporter who goes after stories with the persistence of a gangster. The title of the drama is a pun on his name, Lee Hwa-shin (hwashin = incarnate). And knowing Jo Jung-seok, he’ll also be puffed-up-bravado-with-balance-issues incarnate.

Gong Hyo-jin has been offered the role of a weathercaster. She went to third-rate college and has no money and no connections, and is only under temporary contract with the station. She’s self-sufficient and strong and cute, but is starved for love. She’s the type of person who doesn’t know how to say no, whether it’s to a man who likes her or doesn’t like her.

The drama will be a lighthearted comedy about how jealousy ruins people, and about the fierce competition and love between an anchor and a weathercaster. The setting makes it sound like a familiar drama, since we’ve seen plenty of newsroom dramas, and newsroom romances at that. But it sounds different enough from Gong Hyo-jin’s last drama (where she played the veteran PD in the variety department), and I prefer her in cute, bubbly roles. I hope that the jealousy theme makes it more like the throwback drama Jealousy than just another workplace rom-com, but I trust the writer to put a good spin on the romance, and I definitely trust this cast to make more of the roles than what’s on the page.

Jealousy Incarnate is looking at a July broadcast on KBS.

Pasta took a couple watches for me to love but now it's one of my absolute all-time favorites. Gong's Yoo Kyung, though mousy, was such a strong and fearless person. She didn't take crap off anyone, even her boyfriend, and she went after her dreams regardless to what anyone said.

Both "Pasta" and "Miss Korea" are seriously underappreciated K-dramas.

One wonders how some writers attain popularity and acclaim for writing dreck while actually talented writers are still trying to break thru and attain that hit.

JJS is always a hoot in these kinds of roles!

You're right though, the plot seems cliche. I hope the writer is able to put a spin on it to make it great :)

Gong Hyo-jin is LOVE. And I trust her project choices – there's always something that makes them worthwhile watching, whether it's because it's simply a good story or just GHJ being a delight in whichever role.

No complaints about Jo Jung-seok either.

The first time I saw the title I thought it was Jo In Sung and was so elated over the reunion. Then I see the photo. Let Sigh. But nevertheless, I love both actor/actress. Go Chef-nim!

I sighed when seeing that it was JJS. Nop, not because I dislike him, it's just because I faithfully ship GHJ and So Ji Sub. Do wish both of them work together, and perhaps, ignite some old feels among their avid shippers?

Yay! What a lovely pair! I haven't watched Ghostess (yet) so in my head, Jo Jung Seok is still the dorky musical nerd who can't sing in front of an audience. But I've seen him in other roles and know that he's great. And Gong Hyo-jin is another fave. She can have chemistry with anyone though I wouldn't want to watch her with a wood(I really meant a piece of wood not a.... yeah). I hope this materializes

And I loved Miss Korea to bits and pieces. I loved everything about the show. I trust the writer in making great characters. But I do hope we get a less jerky male lead this time because as much as I loved Lee Sun Kyun, I really wanted to punch him in the first eps.

ooooh I really want this pairing to happen. And the writer of Miss Korea is always good news, as far as I'm concerned - I just hope they don't botch the script and waste two great leads the way OMV did.

Exactly. I don't get excited about the actors now because I know that even good actors can not convince you to watch a drama if the story isn't worth it.

Required fields are marked *

Omg, don't even remind me of those wasted hours on OMV (same goes for Remember - son's war, again wasted leads). XD
But I absolutely adore GHJ and JJS. Would be great to see him with a leading lady who is not a decade younger (as much as I love PPY) though ngl I'm kinda worried how they will look like on screen as a couple since they're basically the same height.

speaking of Jo Jong-seok and OMV, he looked amazing with Shin Mina in My Love, My Bride. They had adorable but believable chemistry, they actually felt like a married couple there.

That's good to know since Shin Min Ah is also very tall. With a good camera director (and shoe lifts maybe ;) ) I'm sure they'll look fine. Anyway since both always have great chemistry with their co-stars, I guess the only real concern we should have is the script.

Well I trust their choices and I liked Miss Korea, so I hope it's less rote than it sounds. I like the title, it reminds me of a Robert Glasper song. I hope they don't change it for something more generic.

Would it kill Gong Hyo-jin to challenge herself once in a while?

...I mean, she'll be lovely no matter whatever she does, and it seems she has a genuine sense of loyalty to people she's worked with before, but it's sad to see her wasted on one undemanding project after the other. I want another Thank You out of her, or another Ruler of Your Own World. I say this as someone who enjoyed Miss Korea.

Her role in Ruler was my absolute favorite role of her's. Always had a good opinion of her, but going back and watching that was a revelation. Didn't know she was THAT good till then. I don't begrudge her choices, for all we know it might be more of a challenge to do lighter characters (probably does to keep them from being insipid and redundant). Plus it's not like writers are consistently writing narratives/characters to that level anyway...

I don't want to blame her either, but I'm frustrated by her choices, knowing there's so much more to her. It seems like a crying shame that she has to waste her time breathing life into cardboard characters and delivering respectable but ultimately forgettable performances, when with the right script and right PD, her talent would explode (as we've seen in Ruler).

Good scripts are thin on the ground these days, but she's a very big name now, and she could stand to be a lot pickier. For example, she could be a very good fit for Ahn Pan-seok, though obviously in the mold of his work with Kim Hee-ae (think A Wife's Credentials) than more concept-oriented shows like Grapevine, The End of the World, etc--he thrives on restrained, subtle performances, and he's a stickler for realism. She's the queen of understated, and she has a gift for making her characters feel like real people. idk, maybe it would be a disaster haha. It is unfortunate that she worked with Noh Hee-kyung after she went mainstream and not before--that would have been something to see.

How many well written projects (esp. TV shows are there?).

Lot's of big names who have gone from one insipid drama to another.

GHJ has actually done fairly well in contrast - "The Greatest Love", "Master's Sun" and "The Producers" were all above-avg. K-dramas.

She does challenge herself in movies. Watch her movies and you'll be able to see her pull off all kinds of different characters, serious, dorky, depressed.. you name it.

Yeah, that is true. Her movies are a mixed bag critically imo, but she does take more risks and that's something. I guess I'm being greedy haha.
