Drama viewership ratings for the week of Oct. 2-8, 2017

Happy Chuseok Week! It’s the one week out of the year where we get a mandatory drama break, meant for us to rediscover ourselves and our purpose on this giant ball we call a home. Or, it’s a week for us to watch and re-watch the oldies that we love so much—did anyone get any good viewing in?

There weren’t many options for the general viewing public, however, so ratings this week can be considered a bit of a wash. Some shows, like Lingerie Girls’ Generation and Age of Youth 2, ended to moderate numbers, while the rest of the shows waiting to start are just around the bend. The only constants were the weekend shows, and it’s no news that My Golden Life is killing it and will continue to do so until it’s over. Tune in next week for a more exciting post!

Well, While You Were Sleeping has nothing to brag about, ratings are laughable.

Calm down this week was like a Thanksgiving week in Korea so hardly anybody would have watched TV when the whole family is gathered together at the dinner table.
Also it has overtaken hospital ship so it will probably ride a whole lot

Ohh here I thought WYWS is already holding a high number, when I read it exceeded HS (I didn't check the actual number by the way) . It did exceeded on Thurs slot but not by a huge number yet. How many epi left for HS? And what will the be next drama? Is it "I Am Not Robot?"

Wish to see more drama with double digits next week! 😀 Goodbye Age of Youth, I'll be waiting for season 3 😅😁❤ (still not catching up with final epi yet lol)

Next week rating forecast:

Monday-Tuesday: No way the two new romcoms, 20thCBG and TLIOF, could beat the dominance of SHJ and YSJ romcom. Not sure about WC, but with WYWS already aired and had strong followings, viewers might feel fatigue with legal drama and not tune in to this show. Plus YSJ and SHJ combined star power > all 6 leads start power combined. So Temperature Of Love for the win. 👏

Wednessday-Thursday: The great Hospital Ship 🚢 had finally sunken. MD might continue Manhole rating because it’s sandwhiched by two rating magnets. BRC might not stand a chance. Fyi, BRC and TLIOF will occupy the time slot left by My Secret Romance, albeit 30 minutes later and until now no one know what MSR rating is. Similar fate might befall both shows. While You Were Sleeping for the win. 👏

Cable dramas ratings are usually much lower than public broadcast anyway unless its something like Goblin, any terrestrial drama beating Buamdong Revenge Club or This Life is Our First is not any kind of meaningful ratings victory haha.

Agree with you. If any of this cable drama which is less hype and star power reach what HS and WYWS got, maybe I'll sponsor a party lol.

TLIOF - I had a hard time to think what drama is this, because it is on Mon-Tues slot, so I'm not sure how it will compete against WYWS. LOL. About BRC, I want it to do well, at least get CM's rating, because I want to see more female centric drama / older actresses headline drama in the future.

@sera I think BRC is at least a unique concept, I really would like to see a drama about older women that tells the story well and isn't like a typical weekend drama/is not makjang. I hope it does well for that reason too. Age of Youth is about a group of young girls, it's nice to have a drama about a group of older women too if it's well done.

I actually interested in TLIOF but I saw their 1 minute trailer and now I want to avoid it because they have snails everywhere and that is my worst phobia, I know that's sounding silly but it's just my personal complex.

Ah, fear of slimy gastropods! I had a similar reaction (not fear, but rather disgust) when I came across a slime-in being held by a passel of huge African tree snails in Hawaii. Yikes! Seriously gross. I know. A totally irrational, visceral reaction.

Imagine my delight while watching one of the later episodes of LET'S EAT 2 and our heroine devours a fist-sized marine snail after extracting it from its shell. Holy cow... You've been warned! ;-)

I'm not suggesting TLIOF will compete with WYWS. That is just an added info. that both shows venture into a time slot that MSR left and that show doesn't have rating. Perhaps because the drama rating in that time slot is too low to even be reported.

Imo, both shows might have better luck in old time slots.

If BRC good, it's gonna big competition with WYWS. SIA, which also older actresses headline drama doing great.

I can hardly call TLOF dominance when it had mediocre ratings without competitor from both mbc and tvn this week. And what star power does YSJ even have when he is a newcomer? Han Ye-seul is an A-lister and despite her scandal, is still more famous than the two leads combined.

I think people are underestimating Mad Dog (like how people never expected Hospital Ship to do well). It has two strong male leads and might even pull a Defendant or Chief Kim if the plot is executed well. Sadly it is taking over a miserable time slot.
MSR is headlined by two nugus on a channel known for crime dramas (over romance), whereas BRC and TLIOF has some reputable leads and its tvN. I feel like Wed-Thur will be an interesting time slot to watch for because so far everyone expected WYYS to lead by a big margin, but I feel like its going to be a tight fight.

That is a possible scenario too. In the end of the day it depends on the quality of the drama itself. Based on reception in dramabeans, both WYWS and TOL are high quality dramas. Agree competition can be thigh.

It will start at 9.30pm SK Korea time, which is 30 min earlier than the other three shows. Not sure how it will fare out but maybe the change of airing time from the usual 11pm can give a rating advantage or disadvantage.

11 pm is really late for airing, no? I watched Strongest Deliveryman which was an 11 pm drama on KBS and they got from 3 percent ratings at the start to 7 percent ratings at the end, itll be even less for a cable drama at that time.

Not really. Maybe this is the new strategy by tvN, after seeing how their Mon-Tues drama slot weren't getting high number this year, unlike last year. It happened with other time slot too. Except Forest of Secrets and Live Up To Your Name, other drama had rating below than they expected, I believe.

As for SD, I think this drama could get higher rating if it switched place with Manhole. 11pm might be a little too late to watch drama for older generations and for young generations, they can watch drama online later.

Honestly even two years ago 2-3 percent was considered good ratings for a cable drama weekday, getting 8-10 percent last year probably made tvn greedy. They need to have better dramas and pay attention to script, it feels like theyve not bee doing that in some time.

I think Strongest Deliveryman is a different case since its on a public channel though. I definitely agree it could have done better if they took it in the Manhole time slot.

I still find Manhole's low ratings funny though. Even poor Sassy Go Go, with all rookies cast, didn't go to 1 percent, that's a bad number even for cable.

1

"Forest of Secrets" and "Live up to your Name" should be considered hit dramas even more with the decline in ratings these days.

There is no legal drama above 6.5% to compare "Forest of Secrets" to and "Live Up To Your Name" is the highest rating sageuks on cable if we call it a sageuk, half sageuk time travel or whatever...

4

@pigsnout Manhole's rating even started below than what GG 1979 and School 2017 got this year. I can at least understand if the rating kept declining due to the storyline but to think it didnt't even started with 4% is still a mystery for me. Idol-drama reason also not clicked with me.

1

TVN changed the timeslot for SF and later dramas because Fri-Sat wasn't working for them anymore and they hit jackpot thankfully. I think the strain for ratings will be more on public channels than TVN because presently it has a better reputation and better budget for turning out quality dramas. Its the big 3 that might lose out on ratings. The competition this week onhwards will be crazy.

Its funny how some are making a big deal of WYWS ratings beating Hospital Ship when Hospital Ship, before it started, was a drama that no one was thinking of as timeslot topper, everyone here was thinking it would flop.

I say this as a fan of Lee Jong Seok btw, WYWS needs to show bigger ratings after all the hype, maybe it will get 2 digits next week but it needs to be more memorable otherwise it ends up like Legend of the Blue Sea which got 17-18 percent ratings but still had least impact than dramas like Fight My Way which got only 13-14 percent but lots more talk and impact.

I hope they'd continue the series even if some of the main cast won't return.
As long as Park Yeon-seon remain as the writer, "Age of Youth" will continue to rise.
Despite not having Ryu Hwa-young (full time) and Park Hye-soo moving on to other projects, "Age of Youth 2" still increase in ratings.

Park Eun-bin definitely needs to return if they'd do a 3rd season. Han Ye-ri could just do cameo if she needs to move on. I would love to see her headline another Indie film.
If she decides to move on I'd love to see a more experienced young actress take her place like Lee Se-young. She is 24 and underrated like Park Eun-bin.

I hope due to the success of AOY, will create more opportunities for Han Ye-ri and Park Eun-bin. I think I'll be fine if Han Ye-ri move on and just cameo like Hwa-young in season 3 and having new casts could be better, for example like Choi Ara in season 2. Lee Se-young is definitely a good choice. Baek Jin-hee and Kim So-eun are also good ones that deserve a good script to showcast their actual talent. I also had their names in my mind before the casting was finalised in both seasons though.

I was thinking about Kim So-eun too. Baek Jin-hee has been getting lead roles so I think she is fine.
Maybe Kang Han-na who is still underrated when it comes to dramas.

1

Yes Baek Jin-hee seems to do well as a female lead after the success of Empress Ki, she just need to meet with a good script. Kang Han-na also a good choice- I can't wait to see her in Just Between Lovers. Kim So-eun seems to be more interested to do movie(s) for now, as long as no more long drama, it's fine for me (exception to sageuk / KBS weekend drama).

Other names : Jo Bo-ah, Lee Yoo-bi also need good drama and role, even it is not a lead role. Age of Youth seems to be a good platform (like Reply for tvN) for these new / underrated talents - Park hye-soo and Ryu Hwa-young both have been getting roles / lead role after the popularity from season 1 despite of still rookies. Han Ye-ri and Park Eun-bin also weren't so known among the general viewers before, despite have been acting for so many years. So I vote for next season, same casts or not as long as the writer remains.

3

Korean viewers are well aware of Park Eun-bin since she grew up on tv just as much as they do with Yoo Seung-ho but she doesn't have the "oppa" factor that Yoo Seung-ho has although she is more talented.
Does that even make any sense?

Kang Han-na has commanding presence so it would be great to have one kickbutt girl in the house.

Ryu is doing good but I think Park hye-soo left too early. She is no lead material yet and she is not a strong enough actor to compensate for weak writing imo.

4

Maybe I should have put it as international viewers. It makes sense, kiara. Both of them even acted together like 3,4 times already but Yoo Seung-ho is definitely more popular or like you said, that oppa factor. Anyway, I would love to see them reunite in a good project in the future.

Hopefully Park Hye-soo's agency won't push her to do another lead role in near future, like in Introverted Boss. She has certain charm but not skillful enough to be a lead. I think it would have been better if she did AOY 2 but I believe Swing Kids is an offer that she couldn't decline, it made sense she will choose the later. She and Ryu so far were at their best in Age of Youth, so it is interesting where they will go after this.

2

what about Shin Dae Eun... I freaking love her.

1

@missjb if we are going to list down all the underrated ones, the list gonna be so long.lol. Anyone among them is fine for me and deserves chances to get a good role and drama.

3

You keep on talking about hype but WYWS were never promoted as much as any pre-produced dramas like UF or ML. I say this as someone who was constantly complaining about lack of promotions(many of us were). There were hardly any articles released in NAVER during shooting period and promotions kicked off way later, many were whining on twitter and other SNS about this. SO WYWS mostly relies on the cast and writer and its ratings reflect that, in 2149 its way ahead, coz younger people are watching it, coz of its complicated plot, etc whereas HS is getting watched by older people.

Also as a LJS fan you should know, his dramas have plenty of impact and hype while airing but are about 10-11% usually as opposed to Legend of Blue Sea a drama about 18% but not talked about or memorable much. Even if WYWS does not have ratings of 15%, it still will be a very memorable drama like Pinocchio, or W; I mean its already very Hot in Korean portals!

@pigsnout Also I am curious what makes you think WYWS won't be more like Fight my Way, a drama with lesser ratings(coz it attracts an younger audience) but much more talked about and memorable??
WYWS is already making news and is hot in SK news, etc, like FMW did and unlike LOTBS.

Ok, then it should be top of the Contents Power Index like FMW. I'm just saying what I think.

And this is a drama that released BTS stills while they were filming (before teasers), news about guest casts was even reported here, SBS station president even talked about it before....all that isn't publicity?

FMW didn't top CPI till its last 2 weeks of airing. Its not a reasonable comparison to make. WYWS will very likely be more popular than FMW in every sense because the cats are more well liked both domestic and internationally.

0

ok, then like Age of Youth 2. That came first in the CPI in its first week or 2 weeks from what I saw on soompi. It's true that WYWS casts has more popularity than FMW, it should get CPI rank #1 then.

0

wiki says HS is 20 episodes so there are 12 more eps and I Am Not a Robot is next. It's coming out in late November.

I just started AoY2, these are such good dramas. I love the girls of Belle Epoque 😍😍

Pay attention - almost all main weekday shows lost 1-2% of rating. Struggling to even touch 10%. I think it was because family gathering and paying respects to those have gone. But it affected shows badly.
Saturday ratings are as usual.

While struggling against Ship is another bad sign. The difference between quality is apparent. Ship is catering well the emotional needs of people.

See this is why I am surprised when @pigsnout said WYWS was promoted like where? Lol all I saw was few posters, and a few articles, rarely is there any articles on NAVER main page, they did not even care about releasing videos of script-reading, etc

Congrats WYWS for the lead in rating last Thursday episode.
personally,if WYWS able to maintain their first 4 episode rating and increase instead of decreasing ,its more than okay to me. at this day, in this time, 10% is miracle itself. i know, Park Hye Ryun is not Kim Eun Sook or Kim Eun Hee, but i like her drama more than anything seeing that i watch everything from her, Dream High, ICHYV, Pinocchio, Page Turner now WYWS.

regarding promotion, i dont know but sbs probably are only low key promoting it, which is good for me. going all out with promotion is not even bringing anything good, sometimes. it lessen the disappointment if the drama does not liven up to its hype.

rating battle will never stop, but lets not make it something that need to fight for. Hospital Ship may rise again, next week or the new drama will stole the thunder from both show. we dont know. anything is possible.

Exactly. Anything can happen, WYWS might see a big increase in ratings next week/ people decide HS is boring, or maybe HS hold on to its ratings, I just commented with what I noticed.

Also regarding publicity, I can only comment compared to what I see released for other shows, every drama doesnt get BTS video, mv and things like that but there are other kinds of publicity too, they sent LJS to 3 Meals A Day, it's not some drama that suddenly came out of nowhere. I don't know what was wrong about saying that.

If SBS really in the red then I wonder how bad their losses must be, they had 20 percenter hits like Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim, Defendant and Whisper earlier, even Falsify and Temperature of Love in double digits/top of the Mon-Tue time slot. Meanwhile KBS not in the red even after School 2017 hit less than 5 percent and Manhole getting 1.4 percent, I wonder how that is.

KBS is a public channel that gets funded through tv license fees, so revenue-wise they don't depend on ratings (=ad placement sales) as much as private broadcasting companies do.

Saimdang almost killed the stations entire budget and I if they take on LYA's new drama again then they need as much money as possible. She alone charges 100 million won per episode, if they hier another A-list actor opp her then they are doomed. WYWS is the drama the station is relying on to inflate their budgets because Defendat and Whisper didn't have high returns since they didn't attract the consumer population and the cast is also not CF superstars so not much PPL money came in.

It is astonishing that people will celebrate WYWS slightly overtaking HS on Thursday, when the both shows lost 30% of the viewership on Wednesday, and only somewhat rebounded Thursday. This was a disastrous week for the Wed/Thur shows.
