Song Seung-heon, Krystal and rest of the Player cast meet for first script read

This drama has completely flown under my radar, but it looks like it could be a fun ride for the fall. OCN is gearing up for their upcoming crime drama Player, and the cast and crew of the show recently gathered for their first script read, including Song Seung-heon (Black), Krystal (Smart Prison Living), Lee Shi-un (Live), and rookie actor Tae Won-seok (Witch’s Court).

The premise of the show sounds like it might run in the same vein as another OCN drama, Police Unit 38, meaning a fun, rolicking heist procedural. Which is a great thing in my book. A four-member team comprising a con artist, the country’s best driver, a genius hacker, and a “fist fairy” (i.e., the muscle) come together to steal money that the rich have amassed using illegal methods.

Song Seung-heon’s role is that of the leader of the Player team, naturally, as well as the con artist who comes up with the heist plans. Song must have enjoyed his experience filming OCN’s Black because he will be reuniting with the drama’s PD Go Jae-hyun for Player. Krystal, who put in a surprisingly endearing performance earlier this year in Smart Prison Living, will play the getaway driver of the group, having joined the team because of her exceptional driving skills.

I’m actually looking most forward to the last two members of the Player team: I can easily picture Lee Shi-un as the oddball, quirky computer genius, and Tae Won-seok certainly has the bulk to be the enforcer of the group: The “fist fairy” has a fiery temper, but he also has an unexpectedly cute side to him that makes me like his character already.

Supporting cast members pictured in shots of the script read include an interesting mix of musical actors, veterans, and Chungmuro regulars: Kim Won-hae (Life), Kim Sung-chul (To. Jenny), Lee Hwang-ui (Steel Rain), Ahn Sae-ho (Golden Slumber), Lee Hwa-ryong (Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food), Kim Hyung-mook (Sketch), Kim Seo-kyung (Two Cops), and Jin Mo (Champion) will all appear in Player.

OCN’s Player will premiere on September 29 and replace currently airing Voice 2.

The Black PD brought out the best acting from Song Seung Heon so I'm looking forward to seeing him in this. I saw that they've already started filming a few months back. I'm so over the whole con-heist thing, but let's see how a new cast can bring a fresh take to it.

We're on the same page re: SSH. He was absolutely terrific in BLACK. I say this as someone whose first Kdrama was DR. JIN. ;-)

It was so satisfying to see SSH's acting improve over the course of Black and then he really delivered in the last half. I hope he gets to be a little dorky even though he's the heist leader.

Then you add Lee Shi Un and Kim Won Hae (I really hope he does not play the baddie).

@asianromance ar,

A little dorkiness goes a long way to humanizing protagonists, especially the swashbuckling kind. SSH did a great job portraying the bumbling cop with little talent for detecting who went into the profession to unravel his brother's mystery, IIRC. Methinks he had actually studied to be an accountant. Please forgive me if my memory of his motivation has become a bit hazy. I'm pleading Ending-Induced Amnesia. ;-)

I second you re: Kim Won-hae. His character in CRIMINAL MINDS (and that whole story arc) was too much for me, and I bailed after 5-6 episodes. VOICE had already filled my serial killing quota for the foreseeable future. Oh, what the heck. Whatever kind of character KWH decides to play here, I'll give it a shot. He was great as Nam Shin-III's father-in-law in ARE YOU HUMAN TOO.

I do like heist movies, haven’t seen a drama of the same vein. Did see Krystal in Prison Playbook and thought she did really well there. I might just pick this up.

I’m definitely watching this since it’s a genre that I love. If there is a lot of intense heist scenes and team chemistry I’m in.

I really like heist shows. Enjoyed watching PU38. So hopefully this will be equally enjoyable!

The premise sounds so interesting.😍😍 I'm in for it.^^
I had watched only 1 episode of black but I've heard good reviews about Song Seung-hoon's acting. Let's hope it'll be good here too.

Song Seung-heon was indeed fantastic in BLACK, literally and figuratively. I was frustrated with the final two episodes, but his acting was fine from first to last.

"country’s best driver" is really subjective. Keep me safe - whether I'm in the car or outside - and you're the best in my book. Guess I have a really low standard. ^^

Looking forward to hearing more on this drama.

Personaly, the only thing I didn't love in Smart Prison Living was the love story between Krystal and Park Hae Soo. I really don't know why she always acts with actors a lot of older than her : Rain (they had no chemistry), Park Hae Soo and now Song Seung Heon...

Police Unit 38 was great. Seo In Gook and Ma Dong Suk was a great duo :) Mad Dog was pretty fun too in the same kind.

@kurama,

I'm hoping for another MAD DOG, too. The early Bondesque heist scenes were great.

Here's hoping there are no more building collapses, as three last year (with the others in BLACK and JUST BETWEEN LOVERS) filled my lifetime quota. ;-)

You know, the first time I ever saw Krystal was in Rain's Lovely something or other and I HATED her for ruining his come back to K dramas and I blamed her for why we didn't have another from him for a long time, but then I recently watched Heirs and that water fantasy mess and I really liked her in both of those (although I didn't care for either show). So maybe I falsely blamed her for a poor production all around (except for Rain, of course).

I think in She's So Lovable, she had a better chemistry with L. In Heirs, the couple Krystal - Minhyuk was very cute too. I think she's better with actors who have about the same age.

How is Song Seung Heon looking so good these days? Black definitely did him wonders... aside from receiving favorable reviews for his performance, it also elevated his appeal for me. :) Definitely looking forward to this as OCN dramas are my jam these days.

That said, I enjoy capers. Will likely check this out.

There'll be lots of shower scenes focussing on his new long arm. Too bad he isn't playing a cop, or they could title this drama The Long Arm of The Law.

@yyishere did you hear me yell out in pain at that? OH! hurt me! It was pretty loud 🤣🤣🤣

2

There is a czech song "I have one long leg". Nice oportunity to rephrase it, nay?

2

Oh, @allphryne! You know how @yyishere loves to write new lyrics for songs! That's fantastic.

What is the Czech song about? 🤔

Oh and hey, allphryne- is there a Czech saying that is something like (when you say something very silly or stupid),"oh, you talk like a sausage"?

What? That song is really is called "I have one long hand", I just forgot. It is a road-movie soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OsSbx-of70&feature=player_embedded
I just need to rephrase the google translation to get more sense out of it.

1

I have to say that parts of this song do not make much sense to me but the original phrasing is very good. Much better then my translation. Oh well... http://www.karaoketexty.cz/texty-pisni/buty/mam-jednu-ruku-dlouhou-7421

We will find a place to smoke well
where the hot sun does not spike our drinks
where the wind endures the lumps of bird poop
around us and says

We can try what we like best
and watch quietly if someone is not comming
someone who knows we're sitting here
and say hello guys

I have one hand long
I have one hand long

Sit down for us, we will let you talk
and remember our tasks
give us your hand and rest in peace
there in a place where he is not well
na na na na na ná ná ná

I have one hand long
I have one hand long

@allphryne
I would say, now you are MAKING IT UP except that one of the comments on the video says "why does he have a long arm?" 😆😆😆

THT has long been known to be a savvy negotiator. Where most actors ask for the moon and get, well, the moon, he asks for small things in his contract. I read he wanted to have hair extensions for his beard, as well, but changed tact when they refused. "My arms," he said, "must be longer than anybody's on set." It is for that reason, Elastagirl had to turn down the lead. That's how Krystal got it.
True story.

Laughed my head off at Elastagirl...but did you know I heard he's planning to get more extensions everywhere -neck, leg, and ****. "My neck, my legs and my *insert unmentionable part* must be longer than anybody's on set."

I can believe the neck and *unmentionable part*, some men are sensitive about it. But would that be payed even by his agency?

OCN also released a fun (very short) teaser and Krystal and Song Seung-heon looked super cool in it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-WTLHBjf5I

And now you're saying that Kim Sung-chul will be in it too?!!!

Thanks for your report on PLAYERS, tipsymocha!

I've been wondering when we would next be seeing Song Seung-heon, and am tickled that he'll again be working with PD Go Jae-hyun of BLACK, which was noteworthy for his fabulous performances in a (mostly) great show. I also thought he did well in SAIMDANG, LIGHT'S DIARY, but his dual turn as detective and grim reaper in BLACK was a game-changer. Here's hoping that lightning strikes again and that the script and character play just as felicitously to his strengths as PD Go does.

I can't wait to see how SSH teams up with Lee Shi-un, who stole the show in TWO COPS in his extended cameo as Yong-pal, and Kim Won-hae, who hit it off so well with Chief Kim and Nam
Shin-III.

Here's hoping that PLAYERS gives us a memorable team a la MAD DOG delivering satisfying LEVERAGE-esque comeuppance to the baddies.

Lee Si-eon is just excellent in everything he does. While usually a funny man he can be romantic or serious too. He's really good at childish screams and fainting like in Into the World Again. But mostly I was really happy he got a LOVE LINE in that one.

I might binge watch it after seeing the reviews , just like I binge watched Police unit 38, Lee Si Eon character seems funny in the preview <3 and also to see more Kim Sung-chul (To. Jenny)

PLAYER looks good. OCN fans (like me) can hopefully go from VOICE 2 to this drama.
For some reason whenever I see Lee Si-eon I can't but help recall him as as Park Soo-bong in W--TWO WORLDS where it seems he was always yelling "NOOOOONAAA!"

Honestly I just watched the first episode and I was surprised because I felt like Jung Soojung (Krystal) acting was the best out of the four leads considering she's and idol that's pretty amazing,(not many idols are that good at acting) but I am excited for Lee Si-eon's acting I feel like his acting was amazing but maybe the role was a little awkward but in the end of the episode he was doing AWESOME. SSH I feel like he is going to do amazing in "Player" considering he is got good reviews of almost every drama he has done. Good luck Lee Si-Eon, "Player", and the rest of the cast.
