Script reading for tvN thriller Happiness with Park Hyung-shik, Han Hyo-joo, Jo Woo-jin

The first script reading for tvN’s upcoming thriller Happiness recently took place, and stills of the cast and crew have been released.

The drama stars Park Hyung-shik (Suits), Han Hyo-joo (W-Two Worlds), and Jo Woo-jin (Seobok, Mr. Sunshine) in a story that’s set in a near apocalyptic future. A new infectious disease has been discovered in an apartment complex, and the building is sealed off from the rest of the city. Separated by floors and their individual units, and isolated from the rest of the city, tensions and anxieties rise as the residents grow suspicious of one another and try to fight for their own survival.

Han Hyo-joo takes on the role of the courageous and quick-thinking police officer Yoon Sae-bom. She’s a member of the SWAT team, and easily adapts to the ever-changing circumstances when out in the field.

Park Hyung-shik plays a police detective in the violent crimes unit, Jung Yi-hyun. He has a strong sense of duty and responsibility, and prioritizes protecting the public at all costs — even if it means making personal sacrifices. Strong but also gentle in spirit, he has been friends with Han Hyo-joo since high school.

Jo Woo-jin’s character is lieutenant colonel Han Tae-seok, the charismatic head of medical command. He is tasked with a secret mission: to uncover the origins of the infectious disease.

The supporting cast includes senior police officer Lee Joon-hyuk (Bossam: Steal the Fate) and Jo’s right hand lieutenant Park Joo-hee (Run On); lawyer Park Hyung-soo (Crash Landing on You) provides counsel for the quarantined building residents.

Residents of the building include Bae Hae-sun (The Great Shaman Ga Doo-shim), Park Hee-bon (Unfamiliar Family), and Kim Young-woong (Vincenzo), among others.

Directed and written by the duo who created Watcher — PD Ahn Gil-ho (Forest of Secrets) and writer Han Sang-woon (The Good Wife) — Happiness is currently set to premiere in November on both tvN and TVING.

It is a foregone conclusion I will watch this because of Han Hyo-joo but with Ahn Gil-ho directing and the drama sounding like a post-Covid Snowpiercer kind of thingy, well, Christmas comes a little early for me this year.

The plot didn't really grab my attention, but the writer/director combo behind this drama certainly did. I liked Watcher.

I will be there. Director Ahn is responsible for WATCHER one of my favorites of 2019 and FOREST OF SECRETS one of my favorites of 2017. I am so glad Park Hyung-sik is returning to kdrama land. I saw his last three dramas before entering the military (HWARANG, SWDBS, and SUITS and I thought his performance in SUITS was his best work of the three.

Sounds intriguing! 12 episodes too! Tight plotting pls!

Ok, got to get this off my chest. Bummed that Park Sung Hoon's ML roles this yr (this show/other rom-com one) are nada. Its unfortunate that instead of forging a ML path, its gone south since. Esp. w/ other actors in the threshold, I feel his chance for ML has dwindled hugely, & I wonder if he'll be able to recoup the yr he lost as a result. Sighs.

Sighs...
I hope PSH will be cast as a ML with a big name/rising actress next year...
(it seems like he won't be in any dramas this year.... so sad)

His other theater mate Kim Seon Ho has blown up since! Gah, I really hope there's a silver lining very soon. Just bummed that even despite being backed by a big name agency (BH), that he's having a hard time keeping his ML roles :(. Of course, there's more there we don't know about it. But from the surface, it just seems so upsetting that he was in talks/going to get the ML, and then the whole JE fiasco occurred. UGH. Esp, in an industry that churns out new actors all the time, I worry a bit for PSH. I just hope he can get a new drama as a lead asap, he's doing a drama special which is good but if that's his only ML/work this year, I'll be so sad for him. Too talented/charming of an actor to be wasted!!

Yeah totally.... Such a waste.
Oh right, he is doing a KBS drama special this year.
I can only hope her will receive strong critical acclaim...
(It looks like Choi Jin-Hyuk is also doing other episode, I'm looking forward to both)

That's been confirmed and a done deal, but man what a waste of his talents!! On behalf of PSH, I feel so bad for him. I have a soft spot for him, ever since I learnt that his father was/in a coma for a few years now. He cried about it in a variety show appearance he made 2-3 yrs ago :(( Why don't good things happen to good people? It stings when other people can move on quickly (and most times its far worse cases too). Sighs...hoping for the best for PSH, pls give him ML's w/o dropping him!!

My brain just does not want a thriller to be named "Happiness". Is this another one of those weird "translation" decisions? Or are they trying to be edgy during a not-the-best-real-life-timeline? 🤔
