News bites: February 11, 2023

  • Expanding on the Forest of Secrets universe, a new spin-off called Good or Bad Dong-jae is in the works with Lee Jun-hyuk’s (Dark Hole) Seo Dong-jae as the central character. Production is still in the planning stages with PD Jin Chang-kyu (Military Prosecutor Doberman) attached to direct, and scripts co-written by Kim Sang-won and Hwang Ha-jung. The original series writer Lee Soo-yeon (Grid) will be assuming a creative role. [News1]

  • Park Eun-bin (Extraordinary Attorney Woo) has confirmed casting for the rom-com Desert Island Diva, playing a hopeful character who holds onto her singing dreams – even after 15 years lost on a deserted island. Production is being led by long-time colleagues, PD Oh Choong-hwan (Big Mouth) and writer Park Hye-ryun (Pinnochio), whose last collaboration was tvN’s Start-Up. [News1]

    L, Choi Jin-hyuk

  • Over on MBC, L (a.k.a. Kim Myung-soo) (Secret Royal Inspector) and Choi Jin-hyuk (Zombie Detective) have been locked in for Numbers: Watchdogs in a Concrete Jungle (roughly translated), which was previously called Accounting Firm. Slated to broadcast later this year, the office drama has also cast fellow Infinite member Lee Sung-yeol (Love Returns). [MBC, Newsen]
  • Ra Mi-ran (Dr. Park’s Clinic) and Lee Re (Hellbound) are becoming rival shop owners for a new fantasy called Strange Snack Shop Jeonchundang (roughly translated). [News]

    Ra Mi-ran, Lee Re

  • Park Ji-hyun (Reborn Rich) is in talks for SBS’s Gold Spoon (working title), which is also being reported under the title Chaebol x Detective (roughly translated). If she accepts, Park will be playing a police detective opposite Ahn Bo-hyun (Military Prosecutor Doberman), who she previously worked with on Yumi’s Cells. [Sports Chosun]
  • With his upcoming army discharge on the 22nd, Jang Ki-yong (Now We Are Breaking Up) is considering an offer to star in Although I Am Not a Hero. Directed by PD Jo Hyun-tak (Snowdrop, SKY Castle) and written by Joo Hwa-mi (Welcome), the story is about a super-powered family who loses their special abilities. [Star News]
  • MBC’s Joseon Lawyer released stills from their first script reading, featuring the main trio: Woo Do-hwan (The King: Eternal Monarch), Bona (Twenty Five Twenty One), and Cha Hak-yeon (Tomorrow). 1. I get that it's going to be focused on Lee Jun-hyuk's FOS character, but the fact that there likely won't be any Doona or Cho Seung-woo makes me sad. I don't know if I'll be able to watch it if they're not in it 😔

2. Yay, Park Eun-bin!

3. Numbers: Watchdogs in a Concrete Jungle is an awesome title and I might check it out for the title alone.

4. Ra Mi-ran? Why yes, I am interested, thank you very much.

5. As much as I like Bona, I'm not a fan of sageuks. But I'll see what other beanies have to say about it once it begins to air.

So many new dramas... My brain can't process anymore 😅

It would be better if they could release news one time and not everytime an actor joined the project.

I looked at the pictures of Joseon lawyer and saw Chun Hojin my favourite Ahjussi actor is in it and then saw the covid measures read through shot and thought I am so grateful they found work around and continue making dramas as they kept me going through the pandemic.

I look forward to watching some new dramas next month but not sure any of these will be on my potential watchlist as they seem to have the potential to be a genre mixed salad which looks beautiful but is unfulfilling.

If Park Eun-bin's character in Desert Island Diva has been stranded on a desert island for fifteen years, then it means she attempted her flight to Seoul around 2008 when the mainstream music scene was populated by acts like Wonder Girls, Girls Generation, KARA, Super Junior, Big Bang, F.T. Island, 2PM and SHINee. I can't wait for the music references and would love to see any of these groups do a cameo! 🤗

1 - I love The Weasel as much as everyone else, but Season 2 was not as good as the first one imo, so individual spinoff - with different writers to boot - makes me really uncertain.

2 - this can be either super fun or super bad (but still insanely popular lmao). But I'm terribly allergic to writer, so sorry, PEB and the temptation of possible kpop meta...

3 - doubt I'll watch it, but what a heartwarming casting))) Also, they look very alike from that angle, how did I never notice before?

6 - someone needs to enlighten me asap why this guy keeps getting lead roles because all my IQ is clearly not enough to understand that without external help.

7 - I can NEVER resist my faves in sageuk, so hello again, Hakyeon)))

Re No. 6. I don’t have the answer but I think Jang Ki-yong garnered many fans (myself included) and a lot of good will for his beautiful performance in COME AND HUG ME (2018) (Viki US). The only post CAHM JKY drama that I have watched is OCN’s KILL IT (2019) and I don’t consider it memorable. His costar Nana went on later to make the wonderful INTO THE RING/MEMORIALS (2020). His official military discharge is 22 Feb. but he may already have completed his service and be at home. I don’t know. I hope he doesn’t just jump on the first project that comes along.

Wait, so he actually CAN act?! I certainly didn't get such impression from his turn in Search WWW (before I eventually dropped that show midway). For a moment I thought that maybe I confused him with someone else, but nope, that was him.

Popular guys usually get flooded with casting calls even before being officially discharged, so who knows. Not sure if he belongs to that category though - his latest projects didn't do well as far as I know.

“Numbers: Watchdogs in a Concrete Jungle, which was previously called Accounting Firm”

What a glow-up!

Long titles especially with a colon usually get an eyeroll from me, but considering the original title, I don’t mind this one at all!

Count me in for:
1. Yes to Lee Joon-hyuk (1984) in a FOREST OF SECRETS/STRANGER spinoff. I want a ‘good’ Dong-jae. I will consider this a make up to those of us who persevered through all 12 episodes of OCN’s DARK HOLE (2021) (Viki US) out of loyalty to him. DH is definitely NOT recommended.
3. Yes to Choi Jin-hyuk who I have been partial to since his great PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (2014/15) and TUNNEL (2017). The fact that in MBC’s NUMBERS he will be reunited with his P&P costar the great Choi Min-soo seals the deal. Im Si-wan has proved twice that good office dramas can be made.
7. Yes to Woo Do-hwan in MBC’s JOSEON LAWYER (and hopefully BLOODHOUNDS from Netflix also this year).
