I Need Romance 3: Episode 8

If I didn’t already love Sweet Potato, this is the episode that would’ve done me in. It’s one thing to just pine after the woman you love, but another thing entirely to lead her by the hand and help her be the best version of herself, even if that means encouraging her to follow her heart away from you.

EPISODE 8: “It’s a relief that you learned how to cry again”

At the office, Joo-yeon feels another sharp pain in her chest, which tellingly happens right when Tae-yoon walks by. She’s too out of touch to make the obvious connection, of course, and just takes another pill for indigestion.

But then her thoughts float back to what Wan said to her last night, about the pain being caused by heartache because she likes someone. He tells her that he knows it sounds a little preposterous that she doesn’t even know her own heart, but says it’s understandable why she became that way—she spends most of her life at work, and work is not a place where you need a heart.

She had asked about the person she supposedly likes, but he didn’t give away any answers, telling her it was important she found out for herself. She ponders it now, and can only think of Wan and the kiss.

She admits that it is cofortable and warm to be around him, and yes, the un-comfortable thing could be attraction, and she does have fun when they’re together. But she shakes the idea out of her head and refuses to believe that he’s the man she likes.

At home, Wan chuckles to himself guessing that right about now she’s racking her brain trying to find the answer and probably looking in the wrong place, and then two seconds later she sends him a text: “Don’t misinterpret things! I don’t like you!”

He laughs and then sends her a cute reply that makes her smile, nudging her to think about it some more because she does like him, and probably already misses him even though she saw him this morning.

Tae-yoon notes her cute expression while she’s texting Wan, and asks her to have dinner tonight so they can talk work. She can hardly contain her smile.

But when they head down together, she turns the corner and discovers Se-ryung standing there, and immediately turns around to try and lead Tae-yoon away. Ha. It doesn’t work because Se-ryung sees them, and she inserts herself into the dinner.

When the awkward threesome arrives at the restaurant, it goes from bad to worse when Tae-yoon helps Se-ryung take her coat off, and she’s wearing the exact same dress that Joo-yeon is wearing. Ha, it’s infuriating, but funny.

Tae-yoon steps away to take a call, and Se-ryung gets in a dig that all those years spent imitating her and copying her style must’ve paid off. Gaaaaaah. Se-ryung asks why she turned around earlier when she saw her in the lobby, and Joo-yeon wonders herself why she did that.

She says it’s because she really doesn’t like her. Se-ryung: “Because I’m better than you.” Joo-yeon: “No, because you try to put everyone under your feet.” Joo-yeon realizes it now, that all those years they were friends Se-ryung just wanted someone next to her who made her shine.

Joo-yeon says that’s why she stole First Love Rocker, because she couldn’t stand someone overlooking her. Se-ryung rolls her eyes that they’re still talking about the twelve-year-old incident, but Joo-yeon tells her she still doesn’t get it—it’s not about the guy, but because she considered her a friend.

Joo-yeon: “I didn’t know it until now, but I was never once a friend to you. That’s why you were able to do that.” That seems to shake Se-ryung, but she very quickly plasters a fake smile on her face when Tae-yoon comes back to the table, and tells him that Joo-yeon was just leaving.

That makes Joo-yeon seethe, but she narrates that she learned in the workplace that the person who has more masks is the winner. She plasters on a smile and asks pleasantly why she’s lying, making Se-ryung sound like the petty girlfriend trying to get rid of her, when they came here to talk about work. Nicely played.

Woo-young and Hee-jae are the last ones in the office as usual, and they both sit there stealing nervous glances at the other, trying to think of casual ways to suggest a drink after work without it sounding like a date.

They type messages and delete them over and over, and finally Woo-young loses his nerve and leaves abruptly. But then he ends up waiting till she comes out anyway, and tries to offer her a ride home.

She hesitates, so he goes too far in the opposite direction by insisting that he’s trying to make things less uncomfortable between them, and if she chooses not to get in the car, he’ll think it’s because she likes him.

Of course as soon as he walks away, he regrets the lose-lose situation he just put himself in, wondering if he’s supposed to be sad if she gets in the car. Pfft, didn’t think it through, did you? Still, when she joins him he breaks into a big smile.

After dinner, Joo-yeon has to stand there on the curb and watch Se-ryung and Tae-yoon leave together, and she mutters that he didn’t even offer her a ride. She comes home and immediately starts looking for Wan, and when she can’t find him, she calls to tell him to hurry home.

She doesn’t know he’s taking a bubble bath in the next room, and admits she had a crappy day and wants to vent, so he gets her to say “I miss you” so that he’ll come home in ten minutes.

She complies, and then he tells her he’s in the bathroom. What, you’re not having her meet you in the bathroom? You’re doing this all wrong.

He comes out and gets to tease her about missing him, and tells her to come up to his room with a glass of water if she wants to talk. Ha, he’s loving this.

She comes up while he’s still in the middle of getting dressed, and averts her eyes. Wan: “If you’ve seen everything there is to see, come in.”

He asks what’s on her mind, and then she remembers that she had that horrible dinner with Se-ryung and Tae-yoon, and collapses on the bed with a sigh. She asks how Wan became friends with Se-ryung, and he tells her about meeting her in New York when he did the music for a fashion show.

I love that he’s just holding her hand as they talk. She demands to know what men see in her, because she just doesn’t get it, and wonders how on earth someone as normal as Tae-yoon sunbae could like her.

Saying the words aloud finally clicks her feelings into place, and she gets up with a start. Damn, the look on his face when he knows she’s figured it out, and as she pulls away…

She realizes now that it’s Tae-yoon she likes, and looks over at Wan: “Did you know?” She knows the answer before he even says it. “You knew.” She asks what she’s supposed to do now, and he tells her to just do what her heart tells her to.

Wan: “Go where your heart leads. Do what you want. Go where you want. Go as far as you can go.” Could you be more perfect?

She says it’s too late, and he tells her to stop calculating everything. “How long are you going to live not knowing your own heart?” She doesn’t see how it’s not complicated, not that she knows how to turn off her brain anyway.

So Wan just does what he does best, and shows her by example: “I love you.” She brushes his hand away and calls him crazy, and he adds, “Because I don’t calculate.”

Woo-young takes the long way home and drops Hee-jae off, but she shrinks back when her boyfriend arrives just ahead of her. She picks a fight with him for coming here instead of studying, and he asks what she’s going to do if he fails the civil service exam this year.

Without hesitating, she says she’ll break up with him. He’s heartbroken that she’d leave him if they had to make a modest living like her parents, while she counters that he knows nothing of the real world.

This time he’s the one to pull the trigger and suggests they break up now, since they already know their dreams of the future are so vastly different. She’s shocked, but she doesn’t go after him. And when he steps outside, he locks eyes with Woo-young, still sitting in his car outside.

Joo-yeon sits in her room and thinks of Wan’s simple confession of love and narrates: “Some love is so frank, and other love is endlessly painful. Whether a brand new love or an old love, the pain and the complications are the same.”

Min-jung sits in bed ignoring Min-seok’s calls for their standing date, and he waits and waits with jewelry and flowers, but she never calls. Joo-yeon (voiceover): “Other love ends without ever beginning. Your feelings never get conveyed, and even when you try, they don’t reach the other person.”

As Wan sighs at a picture of Little Joo-yeon, she narrates, “Perhaps in love, nobody can ever be an adult.” She looks in the mirror and complains that love is useless and berates herself for liking Tae-yoon of all people.

Tae-yoon reluctantly drops Se-ryung off at the office, sad about the fact that she has work when he wants to spend the night together. But then as other men file in chatting about how much they’re looking forward to their poker game, Tae-yoon’s face hardens.

She tells him it’s a regular game with business contacts and investors that she has to do for work, but he just shuts down, realizing that she hasn’t changed at all and will never put him first in her life. Well clearly you haven’t changed either.

She says this is who she is, having expected him to be a little more open-minded knowing that, and wonders why he’s dating her again if he distrusts her so. He says he was wrong for expecting her to change, and says she’ll always be looking elsewhere and making him uneasy, and breaks up with her.

As he drinks at home, he flashes back to the day she brought him his betta fish. She has the matching girlfriend, and explains that they have to live alone because they’ll fight. He jokes that she brought him a fish that’s just like her, and calls them sad for having to live apart.

Joo-yeon and her team complain about having to come to Se-ryung’s home ground (she lives in a hotel, which Joo-yeon says was always Se-ryung’s lifelong goal), but the two teams meet there for a strategy session on launching an online shopping mall.

This time they’re prepared not to let Se-ryung’s team get the upper hand, and use signals to take a break so they can regroup and present the best idea. They lie that they’re going for a run, and then sit down in the pool area to strategize.

Tae-yoon joins them to hear their ideas, and adds that it’s been raining for thirty minutes, which makes their excuse a little flimsy. Woo-young glances over at the pool and jumps right in, saying that they’ll just have to get wet now. One by one they jump into the pool as Tae-yoon laughs from the sidelines, and then they return to the meeting with Se-ryung’s team none the wiser.

The next day Se-ryung stops by to give Tae-yoon the tickets to the musical that they had been planning to see, and says that it was just a fight but they can recover, and that she’ll be waiting for him there.

She drops in on Wan at the studio and apologizes for being a bad friend lately, and he jokes that she must’ve broken up with her boyfriend. He’s surprised when she’s silent, and realizes it’s true.

At the same time, Tae-yoon invites Joo-yeon to go see the musical with him that night. Oh nooooooooes. Don’t be that guy!

She’s of course on cloud nine about it, and asks Wan which outfit she should wear. He carefully asks what Tae-yoon said when he asked her to go, and figures out that Joo-yeon knows nothing about his breakup with Se-ryung.

She calls it just a friendly after-work thing, and he sweetly helps her pick the best outfit to wear, and even offers to drop her off. It’s so cute the way he tells her not to stay out too late like a dad.

Wan happens to pass Se-ryung’s car on his way out and calls to see if it was her. She confirms that she’s headed to the very same musical, and says she’s meeting her ex there and doesn’t know if he’s going to show up or not.

It’s then that he realizes: “That bastard. He called Shing Shing out to show Oh Se-ryung.” U-turn. He races back to the theater.

Se-ryung waits through the beginning of the show, and then it sinks in that Tae-yoon isn’t coming. She gets up to leave, but on her way out she sees him a few rows back with Joo-yeon. Thankfully Joo-yeon doesn’t notice, but he does, and turns to look at her coldly.

Wan arrives just as Se-ryung is walking out, and she tells him about seeing Joo-yeon inside, wondering what she’s trying to do. He tells her that Joo-yeon has no idea that Tae-yoon brought her here to show Se-ryung, and that’s when he finally tells her that Joo-yeon is Shing Shing, the person he came back for.

Tae-yoon and Joo-yeon go out for a drink after the show, and he tells her then that he broke up with Se-ryung, and though it’s a spineless petty way to cut the cord, showing up tonight with another woman should’ve sent a clear message. Ack ack.

He at least admits that he used her, not that it makes it any better. Joo-yeon says it seemed like Se-ryung really liked him, but he brushes it off like any other breakup, insisting he’ll be fine. She recalls that he spent a year wandering the desert the first time, trying to be a good friend to him all while tamping down her broken heart.

Wan waits anxiously at home for her to return, and she heads straight to her room without a word.

He follows her in and she tells him about Tae-yoon using her tonight, and then admits that she wasn’t even mad, just hurt. Wan smiles to hear her describe what she’s feeling accurately for the first time, perhaps in years.

Her voice starts to shake: “I think I like him a lot more than I realized.” His heart sinks a little at that but he takes a step towards her, and she tells him not to come any closer. “Ever since you came, I keep crying. If I see your face, I’m going to cry again.”

But he comes closer anyway, and sits down next to her. He caresses her face and just looks at her, and without needing to say that it’s okay if she cries, the tears come spilling out the second she turns to look at him. What a lovely moment.

She sniffles them back and complains that she hates crying and she never used to cry when she was alone. She fights the urge to cry and gets up to walk away, but he stops her and holds her close.

Wan: “It’s a relief that you learned how to cry again. You can just cry in front of me.”

COMMENTS

One guy drops her off for her date with another man, while the other uses her as a beard to get back at his girlfriend? No contest. Okay, Tae-yoon wins back a few points for admitting that he used her, and sure he doesn’t actually know that she has feelings for him and I don’t expect him to, since she clearly hasn’t known until now either. But the fact that she went with butterflies in her stomach just to end up so deflated—it felt like a punch to the gut, and the way she was so obviously trying to hold it together and play it cool in front of him really made the moment land. Kim So-yeon is so great at this kind of thing—the more she struggled to appear fine, the more it squeezed my insides.

It’s interesting how his relationship with Se-ryung really starts to peel back some layers for Tae-yoon, who is pretty much the male version of Joo-yeon (which makes sense given that she molded herself after him in the workplace). He seems so aloof and together on the surface, but he’s clearly a mess of insecurity when it comes to Se-ryung, and now that I’ve seen them as a couple I find myself siding with her. She’s no angel but he’s got a pretty narrow idea of how she should behave, with no flexibility or room for argument. If you seriously distrust her that much, why do you even bother? I don’t disagree that she could change for the better, but I don’t see him changing either, so as far as I’m concerned, she’s the bigger person for at least putting herself out there.

Wan just gets better and better with every episode, and it’s so great to see so many dimensions to his relationship with Joo-yeon, from the bratty dongseng to the confidant, to her shoulder to cry on. There’s just an ease and comfort to their relationship, and my heart skips a beat whenever he holds her hand. It’s really his no-calculation style of romance that makes me swoon, because he’s not expecting anything in return. It says so much that he’s able to smile and cheer her on to do whatever her heart asks of her, because he cares more about the fact that she shouldn’t live her life so closed off from everyone.

That she’s found one person with whom she can completely be herself with, cry in front of, and admit her greatest failings to—well that just says it all, doesn’t it? Maybe it’s not that she forgot how to cry, but that she didn’t let herself cry because she didn’t have anyone to lean on.

I have some questions from yesterday’s ep. still: 1-What was the deal with the jacket? When HJ got upset. I didn’t really get why she was so upset. 2-I think it was WY who said this, “Director went out of his way to side with OSR,” and viki wrote (what I think) would be the expression in Korean (as if his elbows bent in the wrong direction).Could someone explain to me what the Korean expression implies? Thank you!

Interesting episode. We find out more about SR and YJ’s past, which explains the present rift between them. Different kinds of love are being portrayed (or explored). TY disappoints me even more in this ep. while JW is winning me over some more. I have been doing some reflecting about this drama, and I do feel that YJ is kind of old (enough) to not know her own heart, and how she feels. GF was right when she said that this is an extreme case. It’s a drama, so I am just rolling with it.

I was so not impressed with TY’s manners at the restaurant. I know he is not dating Shing Shing, however, he should have helped her with her coat and he should have pushed her chair in. It’s called having manners, and it is nice to see that in people. TY also kind of irritated me during the dinner, when he kept smiling at everything SR said. *Sigh,* love makes you dumb at times. And why did he leave YJ on the street, when they live on the same block, and when she left her car at the office? That felt quite inconsiderate to me. Maybe in his defense, he is not aware of the antagonism between YJ and SR, or the degree of it? I was not sure what to think of it.

Seeing HJ with her boyfriend in this ep. I felt that I might have been a little harsh with HJ yesterday, I do understand (better) her hesitations with WY (who was cute, driving around, just so he could have more time with HJ). Her hesitations were well founded, and I appreciate her commitment (to her boyfriend), and her effort to not go further than the kiss. I also thought it was mature of JH’s boyfriend to let JH go, since they didn’t have the same dreams. He must felt have that he was (already) losing her.

JW is confirming what I said about him yesterday: he is man enough to encourage JY to go for it, pursue TY if she wants to give it a try. It’s not like she wants to date him (JW) right now, anyway. It still says a lot, that he encouraged her. She does need to find her own way, even if she gets hurt. I agree with that.

I thought the fight (between SR and TY) was petty, because it IS work related, and she is not cheating on him, though I can understand him feeling slighted. She should have been forthcoming with where she was going. If she has nothing to hide, why isn’t she telling the truth about those evenings? Also, they got back together, assuming that the other person would change: that TY would accept her the way she is, and TY assumed she would change her work habits some (and her personality). Maybe they should have had a talk, the morning after. And let’s not forget that TY went back to her, because she did pursue him. Though, if she was really like he described her before they broke up, she was bad, and yeah, he shouldn’t have stayed with her. NGM is making me vacillate, he is so cute when he smiles *sigh*

And thank you for the recap! Some progress, with this ep. And I kind of feel bad for Ahn Min Suk (he is cute :-) ). Min Jung should eventually talk to him, and I hope she will tell him the whole truth (about everything), and let him have a say in what should happen (about everything as well). That would be a great way for her to mature as well (or mature some more).

Tagging onto Ivoire's point about TY feeling slighted - why exactly was he mad? Did he think that she was exchanging favors with the men? If someone could explain that point better, I'd appreciate it.

TY mentioned twice that he felt she was always looking for someone better while they were dating and that she never put their relationship first. He also said he did not have the confidence to date her again. I really think it's TY's insecurity coming in to play. He remembered how he felt before and probably realized when she lied about what she was doing that he would feel the same way this time as last time, and he couldn't handle it.

The fact that he used Shing Shing to make her jealous further illustrates how insecure a guy he is when it comes to love.

That's my take, anyways!

When SR was rumored to be dating other guys, she didn't defend it, which put TY on edge. SR's pride got in the way of their relationship. She didn't bother to tell anyone that it wasn't true and she didn't see the point.

SR is also too proud to tell TY that whatever she has with the men around her means nothing when they are in the relationship, but is willing to ask for him back when out of it.

SR has blocked feelings and while she may know her own heart, she has a lot of trouble expressing emotions, as if she's too proud. This would be from TY's POV and enough of "I love you" but only when they are broken up... and enough lack of comfort would break most relationships. Her carefree attitude drives him nuts, because he's a careful type--he has everything to schedule, he likes to consider reputation and cares about his own. But her come-what-may attitude rubs against that.

From SR's POV, he has nothing to worry about. She may be cold to the world, but all he has to do is believe in her no matter what her behavior is. She likes to live free and doesn't care about a bad reputation. Let them believe what they want to believe, she's not going to show weakness to anyone. She can't understand his behavior since from her POV she's never made him doubt anything. I think her main trouble is pride. Personal pride to not show weakness to herself.

If TY fell off his pedestal yesterday, he became the guy I never want to date today. Bad manners at dinner, retaliation tactics that grade schoolers usse to 'get back' at someone who hurt them, and you're right Ivoire, he didn't treat SR with trust and dignity (even if I don't like her very much his behavior is worse).

Maybe TY should have wandered in the desert longer because he forgot the self reflection part.

Enough about them

JW + JY + cute couple !

SR is a single successful career woman who puts her job first above everything else. It's almost like getting into a relationship with a single mom. He is trying to make himself top priority in her world but she's not having any of that. I may not like her personality but I do understand her. The guy is too needy (plus petty).

@Ivoire: In regards to your first question, HJ thought SR gave her the jacket as a trick to sabotage YJ's telemarketing segment.

If you recall, YJ only picked the jacket after 1) seeing HJ wear it, and 2) hearing from HJ that the jacket had gone viral in Gangnam

HJ thought that SR might have deliberately given her a crappy jacket that was destined to fail, but lied about it being a success, in order to trick YJ into selling it.

Watching (and reading) about the Tae Yoon/Se Ryung relationship really makes me think that INR3 is being really clever in its use of the first/most important loves in the characters' lives, by breaking with the pattern that was set in the first two series. INR 1 and 2 both had the main couple as the ones who broke up in the beginning/were broken up when the series started, but this time its actually the male and female second leads who go through that journey with each other. In no way do I think Se Ryung and Tae Yoon are finished yet; I hope they both learn about themselves from their relationships with Joo yeon.

I'm amazed that Kang Tae-yoon can fit his entire douchecanoe in that tiny theater seat.

I had to pause the video and be all, OOH YOU JERRRRRRRK.

I used to really like his character makeup- hard but smiling businessman, had a bad ex, trying to move on. The selling point though was the solid relationships with his staff... but now all his inclusions into cute team-scenes like the pool scene make him look out of place and incongruent with what Joo-yeon sees in him. I mean, yes, he looked sharp as hell, but even the clothing palette for that scene drew him apart and he presided over it like a mystery. Instead of enjoying The Cute, I was analyzing. Whose side is he on?

I can strangely see why he's the attractive second lead option, meant to provide twists and turns until Episode 10-11ish, but now it's going to be dramatic and frustrating until he gets dumped and she ends up with the actually decent person.

Imagine that. The emotionally intelligent and career-supportive guy does the housework AND gets the girl. Can we have more of these personalities onscreen if not in real life, please?

(and maybe an Alexithymia expert on the set for Joo-yeon.)

Se-Ryung as a character is just.... I really want to shake her because she doesn't know how to be a friend and this is consequently affecting her inability to be a girlfriend as well, it's not about her changing but her expecting others to change which is the same selfish thing that Tae-Yoon is doing when he expects her to change. They both need someone to smack them across their head and call them 'Dumbass'. Luckily for Joo-Yeon she has that person and he's Wan and he's awesome and adorable and shirtless so all is well in the world.

Also, I really want to know what is going on with Min-Jung and Min-Seok.

It's the way Wan looks at JY that always makes my heart skips a beat. What a warm look, and so welcoming. Like an open but warm water lake in the midst of winter. I love INR3 close ups. They convey more than pictures, they convey emotions.

Jeong Hee Jae's boyfriend and her relationship is kinda written as a contrast to Wan and Joo Yeon's relationship. But there is only a marginal difference to me. She's doing what she thinks is best and is tying herself to her boyfriend's success. But she doesn't listen to him at all or what he wants. She doesn't seem to have a life outside of men and work... so ummm... I think we need to have the "You need an outside life" talk.

Does Wan have a personal outside life outside of Joo Yeon? I'm beginning to think not. He doesn't seem to have many friends or any guy friends to hang around with, which sends up a red flag for me. Do we need to have the codependent talk?

Wan takes the place of Tae Yoon in this episode with the whole being the one to support Joo Yeon's feelings and helping her to realize them.

Tae Yoon sounds a lot like Joo Yeon in his little speech about how he used her. However, I'm so off of that ship I think I'm on shore right now. He could have told her, or something of that sort before doing it.

Despite that, I have to admit, Namgoong Min's voice is sexy. ^^;; It's a timbre I like. I may not be willing to forgive his character, but that voice... And I liked the ab shot on Seong Joon... (And I don't weigh shows by things other than stories, but I felt compelled to note that.)

considering Wan just got back from the US after 17 years I wouldn't think that he has many friends in Korea. Also his sole goal in going back was for Shing-shing anyways, so its no surprise that his focus is on her. He's currently producing or mentoring a kpop group who's a about to debut so he does have his own life. Codependency is such a negative word and finding it's meaning reinforced my belief that it does not define their relationship.

As for Wan taking over Tae Yoon place, I don't think that applies because Tae Yoon was never emotionally supportive of Joo Yeon or have ever helped her realize her feelings. In fact she didn't have that kind of person in her life until Wan. Tae Yoon is her work mentor and has certain familiarity with her because of the years they worked together but their personal lives are off limits. Instead he actually moulded her how to put boundaries and be emotionally unavailable to her friends/co-workers. In episode 7, you can see this through her memories when he told her not to get sick because it's sign of weakness and to not to cry in front of him because he is not her oppa or boyfriend. He basically thought her to ignore your friend when she tells you she's pregnant because it will be uncomfortable when you work together.

You mean in all the time he was in the United States he never made any friends? Even Big, if you liked it or not had the main character making friends. Mari had a justification for not having friends. 17 years and no friends. I can't believe that for a second. If you don't want to hire another actor--fake it through text messages. You could even get a sponsor! kakaotalk. =D

Codependency is where your emotions rides on someone else's emotions. His emotions have been riding on the back of her emotions... which puts me on edge. He doesn't seem to be seeking an outside life. He's been telling her what he thinks is best for her, but not asking her if that's what she wants. He may be putting together a boy band, but that's not a personal life.

A good relationship functions on the idea of independent people being able to bring things to their relationship. He should be seeking that as well... even if his focus is on her his thoughts should not be her and work 24-7. It's really unhealthy. He's borderline tipping in that direction. He really should be healthy enough to have time to do some guy talk outside of work.

"As for Wan taking over Tae Yoon place, I don’t think that applies because Tae Yoon was never emotionally supportive of Joo Yeon or have ever helped her realize her feelings."
Disagree. Through her flashback when she's talking to him on the phone about Allen. When she's cheering in his office for selling out. When she's remembering their history together, he's supporting her emotions. He's telling her she's great. He's letting her dish it out. He's supporting her through her break up. He's silently supporting her emotions that she's not aware of, but the difference is that he realizes them, but doesn't let her know they are there. But she also keeps everyone at a distance.

The wrench in their relationship though is that TY cares more about how he appears as a person and so when he's preoccupied, he doesn't seem to see her at all. He shuts down (such as the failure of broadcasting or when he's trying to get revenge on SR).

I still like the show, but I would like to see the show address some of the basic loneliness by making friendships outside of the romantic sphere... and that includes Wan.

Yeah i dont think what you're saying about Joo Wan is fair at all actually. This show is about the WOMEN'S stories. we dont know anything about the men's personal lives separate from the women in the story. ie who are tae yoon's male friends? what is his family like? etc etc. we dont know. we only know about joo wan's childhood cause of his relation to our female lead joo yeon. the entire story is meant to be about the women's struggles in friendship and romance and their own internal issues. we dont know much about hee jae's boyfriend or minseok or woo young's personal lives and friendships either. as far as we know woo young's only friends are the women he works with. i'm willing to guess no thats not the case. and actually aside from the work we've seen him do. When Joo Wan came to korea he DID have a friend and that friend is oh se ryung. he had no romantic intentions with her or vice versa. they were genuinely just good friends. and it says alot about him that he values his female friends even when he isnt attracted to them. (but i guess that doesnt count as "guy talk" outside of work. w/e that means) but notice he knew her BEFORE he went to korea cause he met her in New York. So he most likely does have friends back home. where he you know lived for 17 years -_-
idk why the drama writers need to spend time showing him making male friends with randoms who we are never going to see developed or care about (also the target audience for this drama is women ie they dun curr about his mancapades or lack thereof). its not needed to further the plot. cause the plot isnt about joo wan. also jw is already a fully realized person. joo yeon is the one who is struggling cause of how emotionally stunted she is. so he is being a bit like a guidance counselor to her, in helping her find her way. but he ALSO harbors romantic feelings for her. the first part does not rely on the second and vice versa. he is the type of friend that he would still do the counseling even if he had no intention of romancing her at all. (and at this point he seems fully ready to accept and respect that she may never return his feelings even tho he obv wants her to). because he's a good friend. (also he has never once ordered her or made her do things. he's only ever given suggestions or guidance/wisdom. so its always been up to her what she does from then on)
-----Yes he has a strong focus on Joo Yeon but he clearly wants to give back to her all she gave him when he was a child. now she needs someone to care for her so he's determined to be that person for now. if she finds other people to do it then he wont worry over her as much. or if she enters a healthy happy relationship with another man. he will be very sad i dont doubt it. but he has proven to be more than well adjusted and mature enough to be able to accept it and move on after mourning for the appropriate amount. and u know what? i think he'd still value her as a friend even if he might need some time to heal after losing her to someone else.
-------------------
If he was co dependent he'd need joo yeon to rely on him for everything (which isnt even what he wants, he just wants her to know she CAN lean on him if she is troubled. but if she is secure and happy he wont feel bad that she doesnt need him as much. cause he's not a creep) he did so many small sweet things around the house for Joo Yeon that she never noticed or cared about and he never once had a fit over. he was sad. and then...

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

and then he got over it. cause he understands she's busy and stressed. that isnt co dependent. that is the opposite of it in fact.

tbh if anyone is co dependant its tae yoon (who u neglected to mention in your critique of jw). he's a good example of a guy who cant exist on his own without his gf always by his side and constantly validating him. like he apparently wandered through a desert (???) for a YEAR cause she broke up with him!? not to mention his tantrum and pettiness after breaking up with se ryung. also i have yet to see him having friends either. he seems even more incapable of having an actual social life outside work than joo yeon is. we only see more of TY work life vs JW's cause TY works with our female lead. (among the rest of the characters). So like, ofc he'll be around alot. but even with that, where are his friends? He's lived in SK his whole life. All we know about is his failed relationship with Se Ryung that turned him into a soppy mess. =====
and ftr We also dont know if jw ever had gfs back home or his relationship with his parents or if he has cousins or what his mom's maiden name is. does that mean none of those things exist/happened? or rather is it just not important information for the story? ====
I'm not trying to pick a fight btw i just feel like describing him as co dependent is way off base and inaccurate.

I get excited in anticipation every Monday & Tuesday for the screenshot of I Need Romance 3 spotlighting Kim So-Yeon, Joo-Wan, and/or Shin Joo Yun & Sweet Potato/Joo Wan/Allen Joo together as the main "Feature."

Wishful thinking - That their images could have remained posted a little bit longer as the main "Feature" on the Dramabeans website.

Am I the only one who likes Se Ryung as a character? She has got issues (big ones!) but she is like some poor lost soul who is only looking for pure unadulterated love. And acceptance. Not just from Tae Yoon but from Joo Yeon as well. I can totally get behind her. And I can't wait for her to be friends with Joo Yeon again.

Oh, and Tae yoon's a di*k, but can I have Nam Goong Min please?

No, Se Ryong is a nice woman. Right now, I love all the characters in INR3 except Tae-Yoon. But I love the writer`s work on all characters. She made TY to be interesting but less likeable. In the beginning she made me cheer for JY and TY`s friendship and now I don`t want him near JY or any women on this show. He is toxic for Joo yeon and even Se Ryong deserves someone better than him.

I actually like her but still can't understand her answer when people asked her about something

I think she just need to be honest
her relationship fail because she fail to explain that she loves tae yoon no matter what, she needs to embrace her weakness and live with acknowledge that we still can't have something even if we do really want it

for Tae yoon i don't feel he is a di*k.
at least he's honest in what he did, he is confuse than ever
I can relate to his insecurity when he wants her to just honest but because the feeling is there but it's so hard if the action is show other way

TY now is being selfish but when he said to JY about the performance, I just remembered when JY talk about the kiss to him, he thinks they're that close and I just feel bad, he is a good person for me

No, the relationship is failing because he wants her to put him first. He knows she loves him but it's not enough for her to put off work because of him or invite him to work meetings like he has for her. There's nothing for her to explain there. She doesn't have honesty issues.

But she DOES need to work on letting other people in and accepting their failings. She's not very good about the give and take of any relationship. She doesn't see the value in trying to maintain relationships with people who don't trust her completely and don't accept every single bit of her with no change or accommodation on her part. So if people misunderstand her and it hurts her, then then deems them not worthy of her clearing the air if they were going to assume the worst of her in the first place. And if her boyfriend can't accept that she puts work first, she's not about to assure him of the opposite to make him feel better to keep him OR alter her habits to try and accommodate him a little (at this point). It's a big pride issue. THAT'S the root of it, not her having honesty issues.

OST question,

Does anyone know the name of the song that is playing during episode 7 when Won puts Shing Shing to bed? It starts with "you said that you loved me. You said that you want me. Your eyes to cheer my heart sweet oh nananana". It's in English but it sounds like the artist is korean. I've been searching using the lyrics, but not having any luck. If anyone can enlighten me, I'd really appreciate it! :)

I love Wan and I love Joo Yeon, but somehow, there's a tiny uncomfortable feeling that if this is a real situation?

Of course this is drama, and Sweet Potato and Shing Shing is meant to be. But if they're my friends, I probaby told Wan to move on. The girl don't like you, and you become some maid to her, the perfect boyfriend without status and you actually send her off to another man?
And to Joo Yeon, you probably need to make decision soon. That poor boy is in love with you and you didn't help his infatuation with by the way you treat him. Please either tell him off or date him so both of you can move on.

But yeah, this is drama and I know they're the OTP so every interaction here is to show how compatible they are meant to be. But still, if they're my friends...

It's like now that her mind is involved, her heart is actually going in another direction. At least that's how it seems to me, or just my wishful thinking! I want a puppy love like Wan! But I think it will take time to really see him as a man and come to terms with her feelings for him. Can't wait til she does!

The act is really subtile because even with the all "I am a man, I see you as a woman" or "I love you", there are times where I wonder if Wan really likes Joo-Yeon in a romantic way even if there is no doubt he likes her.

I mean that so far he hasn't broke down which would have been justified.

But somehow, there are some expressions, some sounds in his voice that make it so real, not an emphatic pain but retained one, maybe more human ?

I really love how this show is doing something different. I expected JY to date TY and then eventually realize JW was there the whole time. However, show keeps surprising me. I mean yes, she likes him and perhaps they will date but the stakes and scenario seem very unique in kdrama land. This season of INR is vastly superior so far to the other INR season in terms of enjoyability IMO.

As far as SR, I'm unsure of what she did wrong other then not giving him daily updates on her work schedule? SR is a relatively unpalatable character and yes, she needs to address those rumors, for the sake of TY's insecurities, but TY's reaction was too extreme. I'm going with SR on this one.

And naturally SP/JW is awesome. I was iffy on his stalking in the prior eps but he's reacted maturely to the situation and handled everything admirably. And I'm not sure, despite the age difference, I consider JY to be greatly more mature then him lol.

I don't like SR but TY is just.... a jerk?

He says he knows SR well, and that she isn't that kind of woman, but then SR picks her work first and he throws a fit and judges her and breaks up with her because she is ''easy'' and he should know... way to go dude, go away! SR didn't seemed happy to stay there but connections on her field are pretty important so she has her social to do, the way I see it, she was not doing something to be called easy... it is just TY is too insecure to handle secure and profissional SR.

Tsk tsk.

TY also nicknaming his co-works and making fun of their skills to make money by it was not funny and I didn't like it... seems like he is the one that start it all... just care about your work, people feelings are not important...

I wonder if Jooyeon is even in love with Taeyoon at all. I know that she admires him greatly. And he is also dating her frenemy, which may complicate her feelings. There is jealousy. Seryeong is with the man whom Jooyeon respects and admires. What if she just doesn't realize that she is falling in love with Wan? This lack of realization combined with her other feelings (hurt, jealousy, confusion, etc.) may have led her to the conclusion that she is in love with her sunbae. I'm sorry that I can't clearly articulate the thoughts that came to me while watching this episode yesterday :).

I don't exactly like what Tae Yoon is doing but I also don't think he's that much of a jerk the comments are making him to be. I see him as an insecure guy who just needed to be made a priority over work. Sure some might argue she's just working and I don't think Tae Yoon thinks Se Ryung is being "easy" with the other men. It's just that they have different priorities in life. Some people puts family first, some maybe work first, some even friends first. It can get frustrating when two people have different expectations. Which sort of sums up Hee Jae's situation with her boyfriend too (well, ex now). Tae Yoon used Joo Yeon and he admitted that anyway and it wasn't designed to hurt Joo Yeon. Of course it is a cowardly way of breaking ties but we have seen that both himself and Se Ryung can be rather cruel to each other at times. That said, Tae Yoon is just as flawed as Se Ryung and Joo Yeon. And when compared to the perfect Wan, there is simply no contest.

Like almost everyone, I am more worried for Wannie. I know he's doing the right thing by encouraging Joo Yeon to follow her heart but gawd it would be so painful to see her walking into another man's arms. I love how touchy feely they've become and the way he sends her looks of adoration just melts my heart. I hope Joo Yeon learn to love and goes back to sweet potato quickly.

I'm also torn about Hee Jae's situation. For one, I think she is a product-in-progress version of Joo Yeon. I think it's sad that she has to break up with her boyfriend who's been great, well except not passing his exams quickly enough for her. But when all's said and done, Hee Jae might not have loved him enough. Maybe Woo-young will be the right guy for her.

Oh and I'm sad for that professor Min Jung is dating. But they're neighbours so I look forward to him finding out one way or another.

I can sort of understand Tae Yoon's insecurity, because even if he understands that she's not doing anything bad there is hardly such thing called 100% trust between couples.

Both of them are going round in circles. Breaks up because of issues -> Se Ryung misses Tae Yoon, wants him back -> TY agrees -> Same issues arises again -> Break up
I like how this drama addresses how if you never sorted out the issues that are the cause, it still won't be a miracle the second time. Mutual feelings can't maintain a relationship.

I feel so sorry for Hee Jae's boyfriend, she doesn't deserve him :( It's understandable if she break up due to her working hours, but now she's placing too much focus on success.

Love that professor! He seems like such a nice guy (the perfect baby daddy? lol)

I agree with you. When he went on a business dinner with JY he did not hesitate in inviting SR with them. Then instead of taking both of them home he only takes SR. That says a lot about him. He is putting SR first. He just wants the same from her. Why could she invite him in, why not include him? I know his reaction was over the top but make sense since their issues were never resolved. They love each other but that is not going stop them having problems.

Yes. People argue that Tae Yoon lack manners by not pulling the chair ...sending Joo Yeon home and all but what I see is Tae Yoon treating SeRyung with that little extra bit of attentiveness. I have known girls who feel uneasy when their boyfriends treat others just as nice and goes balistic with jealousy.

You know this episode pretty much proves my theory that Tae-yoon and Se-ryung's problems are just as much if not more Tae-yoon's fault as Se-ryungs.

I've been waiting for Hee-jae's boyfriend to dump her, because if dramas have taught me anything it's that if a girl has a boyfriend taking the civil service exam he's going to dump her at some point.

Seeing Tae Yoon showing more and more of his flaws is The Sign that I should switch to Team Sweet Potato, but.. everytime NGM smiles I forgive TY a little.

Guess I am the minority who is still not totally won over by JW due to his behaviour previously, he is like a strange combination of stalker-helper-dictator-housemaid-etc (which I will avoid IRL). He's admirable, but still sorta creepy.

Thing is, these people don't exist in anyone's world, really, but that's OK. I think the title of the series tips us off immediately of that and the creators understand exactly what THIS viewer wants from a show.

I want a sweet-potato cutie pie taking care of the hard-working alpha woman. I want him to hold her hand and sing to her and kiss her until my toes curl.

I also want to fit into the clothes these ladies wear - and I don't mean when I was 11 either. LOL
