Yook Sung-jae considers joining the Village ranks

I like the names that keep cropping up for SBS’s mystery-thriller drama The Village: Secret of Achiara, which has been adding solid actors like Moon Geun-young (Goddess of Fire Jung-yi), Shin Eun-kyung (Oh My Ghostess), Ohn Joo-wan (Punch), and Kim Jae-wook (Age of Feeling). On top of liking the actors, it also suggests that the show will be a true ensemble with an intriguing plot, and not just about one lead digging into the lives of a bunch of side characters.

Yook Sung-jae (Who Are You—School 2015, Plus Nine Boys) is now in the mix to join the cast; he’s received the offer, which he is reportedly considering positively but has not made any decisions on. He would play a petty officer in the town of Achiara, which is described as peaceful and virtually crime-free… at least until a long-buried corpse is discovered and shakes everything up for the residents. Adding to the mystery is the fact that nobody knows who the body is, nor was anybody missing or unaccounted for.

Yook Sung-jae’s would-be character isn’t the main lead (that would be Moon Geun-young), but he is described as a lead. The character sounds like a good fit for his image, with his good-natured and optimistic personality; Yook’s got a cute, bouncy appeal that tends to make me smile, like he’s an energetic puppy. The character has failed the police exam three times before finally passing and realizing his dream of becoming a police officer. He performs all manner of services in the village without betraying a single grimace, but his life totally changes after the corpse is found within his jurisdiction.

The drama will hold its first script reading this weekend, and will premiere in October as a Wednesday-Thursday series.

More for me! I've been looking forward to seeing Sungjae back on the small screen, cuz he really outshone his fellow actors in School 2015 as well as had more chemistry with Kim Sohyun. :P

Thanks for the update. Sorry if this is a stupid question (and it probably is), but does anyone know what Moon Geun-young's character is like? Is she a policewoman?

Very very excited for this. I'm a huge fan of MGY, so I'm really really hoping that this will be the project that finally lifts the curse and gets her career back on track. It's got a lot going for it. I mean, MGY+SEK+Do Hyun-jung (haven't seen much from her, but Que Será, Será had a great script, very well-developed thematically)...it has to equal success, right? Well, here's hoping, anyway.

She's going to play a language teacher and apparently her character is central to the story. Javabeans gave the link to the news about her casting above :)

I'm really excited to finally watch another of Do Hyun-jung's dramas! I loved Que Sera Sera, but haven't seen anything else from her, and this premise sounds like one she could execute really well so here's to hoping it's a success. With this cast, it should be!

I know! This drama has so much potential on paper. I don't usually get this excited, but the thought of Moon Geun-young acting opposite Shin Eun-kyung and working on an interesting project with a writer who actually seems to know her stuff...I can't help myself. She's been in one disaster after another since Painter of the Wind, and it's really sad because she's probably the best actress of her generation. Or among the best. Fingers crossed this all works out!

this is really a mystery genre right sbs? romance is not the focus? I'm okay with romance but don't feed me romance all the way :-) writer-nim do it right :-) Its good Sungjae is considering this ... he needs different roles to grow and this project seems interesting ! he should try this ~

this drama seems interesting nd it's been a long time since I watch any drama with Moon. I'll be totally on board if Yook signs on this drama. I really missed him since school 2015 and this drama looks interesting. As JB mentioned, he is energetic and too adorable to be missed ^^.

Yes! this drama sounds very interesting and I'm happy we'll see Taekwang I mean Sungjae in a drama so soon :P I feel like he has a knack for picking good dramas and characters for himself.

Everything seems good for now SBS. Please do it right.

I wanted Kim Jae-Wook to be the male lead!

He is a male lead :) This is more of an ensemble drama (which I'm really excited for) so I don't think it's going to be a typical line-up with 1st and 2nd leads etc..

That said, I do think that Moon Geun-young is supposed to technically be the main character. And, if anything, it's probably Kim Jae-wook or Ohn Joo-wan for the male lead.

Still shaking my head at the end of the ending of school, we could have had it all....Can we have Kim so Hyun as well as a main and Moonie can be with Jae Wook so we have the second leads finally winning haha jk ? I love Sungjae he really impressed me with his portrayal of Tae Kwang, I hadn't heard of him until he did school and for being an idol I think he is exceptional. Way better than the bland but pretty Nam Joo Hyuk anyways ?. In all seriousness I hope he does accept this role so he isn't typecast into doing school type dramas because I think he could be one of the greater kdrama actors ⭐️⭐️

Just don't shaft Ohn Joo-wan and (to a lesser extent) Kim Jae-wook to the side for the pretty idol please. I have no issue with him, but let's be real, that's a distinct possibility. It's a tad silly that he's up to play a cop. I'm all for actors expanding their limits, but unless this is going the hardboiled cop + rookie route, we're stretching it.

I'm not saying he can't, I just don't want the rest of the cast, who can also act, having their roles truncated in importance, which happens with idol actors regardless of talents.

I agree. We should be okay though--at this point one idol is a drop in the pond. I haven't seen a cast look this promising (on paper) in a couple of months, at least. On top of having Moon Geun-young and Shin Eun-kyung in one drama, plus Ohn Joo-wan, apparently Jung Sung-mo has signed up, too! One of my favorite ahjussi actors. It'll be weird seeing him in a modern-day drama, I'm so used to him acting in sageuk.

How is it silly that Sungjae is playing a police officer? And to Riya, He is in his twenties and in my country you have to be 18 to apply to train as a police officer and you'd normally start doing community support work, it says in the article he does every task in the village without a grimace so he's essentially doing community support work so tbh it's very realistic for a drama.

I guess it's not silly as long as they don't default to the geeeenius super cop despite his young age. From this description, it looks like they won't but dramas bait and switch all the time so I'll reserve judgment till it's out.

@Master's sun..I don't get the hate too..he's proved himself with his acting..so can't really categorize him on the same level with all the other idols,it's not good to generalize all of the idols ,because there are some who can really act. Also, lee jong suk was pretty young when he did 'I hear your voice'..he was a bit more built so,it was easy on the eye..but that does not mean that Sung Jae would be too inappropriate age wise for this role. And isn't 18 the age to officially apply for army as well? So why can not he do justice to the role? Also, there is no need to say that because of this character..all the other characters of kim jae wook or else's are gonna be sidelined lol.Sometimes the interference of the audience is too much to take.

Yay for Yook SungJae! <3
I'll definitely watch this for him. 'Cause thanks to him (GongTaeKwang) I discovered BTOB. Even though I tried my best not to be a tad bit interested about kpop groups and be just a kdrama addict. :3

I keep getting Twin Peaks vibes from this one, though it´ll probably be nothing of the like. Still, are we going to have a very-very pretty version of Andy here? Lol! I hope he takes the offer, he´s young, but I think he can do it. But please, no romance this time, just focus on the darn mystery!

Sungjae is good but I hope writers of this drama dont turn it into School 2015 2.0 because in that drama because of Taekwang's popularity, Yi Han didnt get character development.
I feel like in this drama also they will shift lots of scenes to Sungjae.
I am watching this drama for MGY and KJW so I hope their portions arent cut of for an idol.

School was a different case. YSJ is a much better actor than NJH so it was a delight to watch him more instead of NJH's stiff acting. I didn't mind ignoring Yi-an character at all. Lack of character development isn't an excuse when he couldn't act out even what was given to him. It's still a mystery how he got a lead role without having any qualifications except being under a powerful agency.

Sung Jae is definitely one lucky rising star. i just watched him in plus 9 boys before, i cant say much on his acting since he is still so young and has a long way to go. i just hope his popularity is in par with his talent, (im not saying he is not talented ).
oh not to forget, he sings one OST of Night Scholar, he has a pretty voice :)

i dunno yet whether ill be watching this drama later on, coz for some reason i dun like MGY acting so far. i just knew her because of her babyface look..

Wow, so much conservatism here. Sungjae is one of the good idol actors, and he's not considering the protagonism, he's considering a "secondary"-ish type of role. Give him a break! (By the way, it is possible for him to play a character older than his age, you know. No reason to freak out because he's 20 and playing a cop).

And what's the deal with the love stories? I've seen less than half a dozen shows that got ruined BECAUSE there was romance. Romance doesn't ruin a mystery drama. Bad writing and directing does. It's all about finding the right balance.

I'm super excited for this. With SFD, it's the show I'm most looking forward to. Hope it doesn't disappoint!!!!

Hopefully Sungjae would accept the offer. Ever since I watched him questioning and investigate his father in School 2015, I really want him to act as a policeman or prosecutor.
I read before that one of the lead character is a 28-years old male policeman. I don't know if he can pull that 28 years old character since he's only 21, but I would put high expectation to it.

Good luck Sungjae!! This drama doesn't seem the typical Kdramas who we had main female and male lead and they romance each other then there will be the 2nd lead, the 3rd lead etc.

I think MGY is just the sole main lead. The story will center around her. KJW, OJW, SEK and YSJ will probably have important roles too but not main lead. A lead maybe but not main. They probably will be a help to MGY or a key of uncovering the mystery. Reading news about this drama made me think that. So no need to be worried since Sungjae isn't the main lead anyway plus if they are going to add a trending idol in the drama anyway I'd rather it be Sungjae since he can act. I mean would you rather they add a trending idols who can't act?! Seriously there were very little drama nowadays that don't include idols or models turn actors. So I am just happy that the idol they cast in this drama can act. So the casting is totally a winner for me.

SBS is definitely on the roll. I watched dramas of SBS for this time slot all year round. Excited for this!

This drama is a good way to show that Yook Sungjae can act out roles aside from the naughty yet adorable schoolboy. Hope Sungjae does well in this drama. I guess (hope) there's no loveline between them, right? :O
