Lee Yubi, Lee Jong-hyun up for new rom-com drama

Well I would certainly like to see Lee Yubi (Scholar Who Walks the Night) as a bubbly romantic-comedy heroine, so maybe this will be a project to look forward to in 2017. There’s a new drama in the works from writer Go Sun-hee, who was the second writer on tvN rom-coms Cheese in the Trap and Heart to Heart, and it’s called Devious Twenty (a working title). It’s about a fluttery romance between two twentysomething friends, and Lee Yubi and CN Blue’s Lee Jong-hyun (Orange Marmalade) have been offered the leading roles.

The new series will be a cohabitation romance between two childhood friends, and though there’s not much plot information available beyond that, it’s described as a fresh, lovey-dovey, youthful romance with characters that pop. Well, I like cohabitation dramas and friends-to-lovers stories, so the basic premise has caught my interest.

I would like for it to be a good project for Lee Yubi, who needs a solid comeback after fantasy sageuk Scholar Who Walks the Night, a drama that frankly showed a lot of her weaknesses as an actress. I still like her and want her playing leading characters, and a youthful rom-com seems like the right way to go. I haven’t seen much of Lee Jong-hyun, so I don’t even know if he’s an idol who can act (he seemed okay as Jang Dong-gun’s son in A Gentleman’s Dignity—a really minor role, but the only one I’ve seen him in). He’s also starring in the upcoming youth sageuk My Only Love Song with Gong Seung-yeon, which is due out next year.

Devious Twenty is currently being shopped at broadcasters, and hopes to air sometime in 2017.

Is it 2017 dramas requirement: you have 1 good actor paired with so-so actor?

I thought he was pretty good in Orange Marmalade. He committed fully to some pretty tough material. Not every idol would take on a role that required them to be basically foaming at the mouth crazy in certain scenes.

I'm not into idols actors but he was pretty good in Orange Marmalade in both Joseon and modern time.
No one could take my eyes away from Yeo Jin-goo but I went back and forth between him and Lee Jong-hyun in OM.

Glad to see him back. He has potential to do even better.

To be honest I didn't know he was an idol when I first saw him on screen.

0

Well he doesn't look like an idol.. i think that face suits more for an actor. And those pretty eyes will be very useful upon improving his craft.. They said he was the most unpopular among the boys because he never interract with fans much, but back then for a newbie shy jonghyun he's not bad as colin. Having continuous acting project probably explained something.. together with that handsome face i think he can pull it up.

0

Well I didn't watch Orange Marmalade but if many people here praise him in OM I think I need to reset my expectation and hope for the best. I only saw him in AGD in which he looks cute but nothing to write home about. I certainly want Lee Yu Bi to have succesful drama as the leading lady, after the travesty that is SWWTN, and I hope they'll do well here.

I haven't had any experience with Lee Jong Hyun's acting, but if you say you prefer him over Yong Hwa... That must mean he's a freaking terrible fruit.

Required fields are marked *

Reversely, I think Yonghwa's the worst of the bunch. Minhyuk and Jungshin fare a lot better than Yonghwa, and Jonghyun is a lot higher than Yonghwa on that scale.

Jonghyun certainly has potential, but I wouldn't call him a legit actor yet.

Indeed.. i've watched yonghwa's drama and he's acting is kinda akward with a little of too much.? i'll just put it that way to describe.
But this jonghyun got potential i agree.. i also like minhyuk, he's more natural than JS and YH.

Yeah sorry, I mistyped that. I meant if the commenter prefered Yong Hwa over Jong Hyun, then Jong Hyun must be pretty bad lol.

0

Required fields are marked *

Knetz were forgiving of Jonghyun though since the articles wrote that he "realized what he did was wrong after he started and immediately stopped" and "paid a fine." Meanwhile Yonghwa's now considered a laughingstock because he brought his mom into his scandal and so he now gets called "mama's boy" whenever an article about him is put out.

Actually, Yonghwa didn't bring his mom into the controversy, his agency did. And don't worry, Jonghyun's getting plenty of heat for his part as well. The Chinese fans in particular have been savage to him, whereas they've been much kinder to Yonghwa.

But I'm not sure what this all has to do with either of their acting, really. So let's just stop, okay?

Don't start on this please. Out of 6 people that commented upto now, most don't think he is a good actor or want him for the lead in a role where Lee Yubi will probably have to do the work of covering up his weakness. And the only positive comments come from WGM fans.

Seriously? Lee Yu Bi acting was pretty awful in scholars. I would say they were on the same level acting wise. I just hope Lee Yu bi doesn't do the wide eyed manic look she does so often.

Required fields are marked *

I don't think her acting was awful, but I do think at times she has tendency to do the wide eyes and ltrying too hard to look way cuter. That's why I like her more in serious role like GFB or as a villain in Royal Tailor (although her screntimes was very very limited in this movie). I maybe in a minority seeing her can do much better job in some villain role rather than candy, bubbly type heroine.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I've seen her in Nice guy, Pinocchio and scholars. And she always does this wide eyed slightly crazed look, that's why I noticed her because it was a bit odd and distracting. I didn't watch GFB so I might have missed the role where she was good.

0

I was sceptical at her first during Scholars since she never amazed me with anything except her cute and baby face but then I read many was praising her so I checked GFB only her scenes, then Royal Tailor. Enough to convince me that she can act, as long as the role suits her.

0

Her work in GFB is why I cut her so much slack for her other performances. I think she just needs to hang in there and wait til she's a bit older and getting less candy and more serious roles. Or secondary roles she can add depth to like she did in GFB. She's like a younger Jang Hee-jin to me.

0

She made the best of an absolutely terrible role with the depth of a puddle and the brains of a flea.

And between the two of them, she's far and away the stronger actor. She's good at romcoms - her work in Twenty, Vampire Idol and Pinocchio stands as evidence - but I guess it's true that a less famous actress has to be ten times as good to get even half the acknowledgement she deserves.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I think she did received the recognition for her works, and it didn't take her so many years to land her first leading role in primetime drama (regardless how awful that drama became) from her debut days in 2011. At least she doesn't stuck to do some secondary roles / webdrama / weekend family drama in and with another leading role in this drama, she probably can move up to leading actress after this.

I do agree in your sentence
"I guess it’s true that a less famous actress has to be ten times as good to get even half the acknowledgement she deserves..." Reality is really hard for those actresses.

0

Thats sadly true and a shame to see people dismissing a young very talented actress because they cant see the difference in that her character was badly written, in a very weak drama that was saved little by the emotional acting of Lee Jun Ki.

Suddenly her awesome second lead role in Gu Family Book, her nice comic timing, acting in Pinocchio is forgotten and so on. She doesnt have the easy of fame bad idol actresses taking her potential roles either so i hope to see her get bette, bigger like i do all talented young actresses like her Nam Ji Hyun, Han Groo,Park So Dam, Kim Go Eun etc.

0

@Mohammed - yeah, it's funny how unwilling people can be to give credit to talented young actresses even when the fault isn't hers (terribly written role), while excusing idol actresses with all the emotiveness of a piece of cardboard as 'learning' and 'improving'. And that goes not just for her but for the other actresses you named too.

and sadly, you're right about her potential roles all being taken by bad idol-actresses. She was the second lead in Pinocchio, and it's a travesty to think actresses in her league are being passed over for the likes of the intended female lead of Park Hye-ryun's next drama. There's an entire generation of actresses born between the late 80s and early 90s who've basically had their career advancement blocked by the continued trend for casting crappy idols, and it's maddening to think of them languishing in second leads, family dramas and web dramas forever. I just hope that changes in the near future or people finally wise up that crappy idol actresses are not a good investment.

0

now that you mention, i remember her in scholars! she was AWFUL. everytime she comes on screen i catch her acting, it's just distracting. I've only seen lee jong hyung in OM and based on that drama alone, I am betting that he'll outshine Lee yu bi .. that is unless she took up acting school between scholars till now HAHA!

Finally! I was starting to get worried about whether we'd ever see her acting again.

Not so enthused by her costar, though, he has neither the talent (though she can compensate to some degree for that) nor the star power to make him a draw. I would like for this to actually get picked up by a legit channel with some viewership and not end up as a web drama, if only for Lee Yubi's sake.

Required fields are marked *

Me too Pogo!! I first saw Lee Yubi in GFB and then that terrible role in SWWTN. Her acting in GFB was enough to make me a fan.

I'm still so mad at SWWTN. I didn't exactly find it awful like some of of you but EVERYONE, I mean everyone had a better role than her, the main HEROIN. Even side characters had more depth than she did, hell Gwi's cave had more depth.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

@Flightey Gazelles - I will never forgive SWWTN for reducing her to the ultimate stereotype of a stupid candy heroine. It's especially bad because she tried her hardest with that wafer-thin and weak characterisation (she actually did pretty well as the girl with the world's biggest crush on Lee Jun-ki) but it was sad to see her visibly grasping for any point of emotional connection or depth in a character who was written to have none.

And it was maddening because like you said, literally everyone else got better roles than her!

This us how they sidelined her in GFB when her storyline had gravity and had the potential to be the more satisfying revenge( and redemption) arc. They just reduced her to a bitchy second Lead.

Why him of all the actors?! Do they want to waste Lee Yubi's talent and blame her for it when this flops? He's not a good actor, she deserves better as a costar.

SWWTN was not her fault, her role was written so badly and like a complete idiot, even a Jeon Ji Hyun level actress would struggle with playing an idiot like Yang Sun.

You know...it's weird. I really wonder about that. It's like, you would think that would be more difficult to pull off, but Jin-young and Im Seul-ong didn't really seem talented at all to me...until they appeared in sageuks. They strangely did much better with the dramatic style of acting you need for those roles, though more nuanced performances were still far from their reach. So you never know.

come to think of it, even Changmin was pretty unbearable as an actor until he did SWWTN. And Nam Joo-hyuk in Moon Lovers was a huge improvement over Nam Joo-hyuk in modern dramas.

I remember someone mentioning an interview with an actor who'd done a lot of sageuks and who mentioned that he actually found it easier than modern dramas because the stylised speech patterns covered for a lot of acting weaknesses, once you had a grasp on how to speak in sageuk mode. I think that might have been what happened with Jinyoung as well - the speech masks lack of ease in dialogue delivery, to some extent.

This drama is going to be a huge flop. Neither of these two should be in leading roles. Lee Yubi isn't a bad actress, but she's definitely not leading lady material at the moment. She's better off in supporting roles. Lee Jong-hyun is forgettable, and should be a minor supporting role at best.

It's not like there are a lack of actresses or actors who haven't yet gotten their big break but have displayed some good acting chops. There are plenty of good ones, but it's always mediocre ones that end up getting leading roles. Then some of the remaining ones are taken by work horses who, while good, end up starring in more than one drama in the same year.

I didn't stick with OM, but I don't recall having any issues with the actor/idol. With regard to Yubi and Scholar, the writing was problematic to the point they had to bring in a 2nd writer to "help out" the original writer (one of the writer's of Coffee Prince). I think LY did what she could and most say it wasn't enough, but she's not the first or last actor who has been stuck in this situation. I actually am another who was worried about her back injury so hopefully her delay was not due to injury but maybe waiting for another shot at a lead role.

Before they become big, an actor should be given the first opportunity to show their ability. It would be unfair if we hastily reject a newcomer actor to appear as the lead in a drama. And LJH is not a newcomer. He had acted in several plays and a movie before. I think he deserves a chance. For chemistry, I think they'll both be built easily. I read somewhere said that they were close friends.
Sometimes we see an actor appeared as an actor with average quality, until he/she met the great actor as an opponent, that's when he/she began to shine. For example, Lee Ji Eun (IU). I admitted her acting in Moon Lovers are quite encouraging, although previously many underestimate her acting quality.
