Beautiful Gong Shim team returns with fantasy-romance Reunited Worlds

Hmm, this new drama seems interesting. The PD-writer team behind SBS’s romantic comedy Beautiful Gong Shim and action-comedy-thriller Girl Who Sees Smells, Baek Su-chan and Lee Hee-myung, are joining forces once again to make a drama called Reunited Worlds. Reports are saying that the upcoming supernatural fantasy-romance is set to air in July.

Not much has been revealed on the plot, but what is available has me raising eyebrows. Reunited Worlds will center around a romance between a 18-year-old young man and a 31-year-old woman. Before you run for the hills screaming, they’re supposed to also be born in the same year. So I guess the supernatural part has to do with how these two people who are the same age technically ended up 13 years apart.

Writer Lee Hee-myung and PD Baek Su-chan have a pretty good track record together: Girl Who Sees Smells was a modest success, and Beautiful Gong Shim was a light weekend hit that made Namgoong Min (Chief Kim) a leading man. They’ve proven to successfully mix romance with the supernatural in Smells, and on top of that, writer Lee Hee-myung was behind one of my sentimental favorites, Success Story of a Bright Girl, so I’m cautiously optimistic this will work, in spite of my reservations about the premise.

Reunited Worlds hasn’t made any casting announcements as of yet, but I’m sure we’ll be hearing reports of offers soon. This drama will follow upcoming drama Suspicious Partner in the Wednesday-Thursday slot in July.

Huh. Uh. Still not sure about the whole age thing.

Admittedly neither am I, but there was a similar age gap in "I Hear Your Voice" and that's my all time favorite drama. The premise sounds otherwise interesting, so I guess I'll just see what happens!

Oh! This sounds so interesting. I loved Beautiful Gongshim.

Beanies, any ideas on what happened to the leads?

Oooooh. This sounds intriguing. I must admit when you said that there's a 13 years difference between them even though they were born in the same year, I had Benjamin Buttons flashbacks. I wonder if that's the direction this drama will take. Either way, I love this premise. Can't wait!

Benjamin Button was the same age as the female lead but his quirk was that he was born "old" and as he grew, he becale younger. My guess is that when the male lead was eighteen, he stumbled into an alternate or fantasy world where time stopped.

Being legal and both older than 18 years, I have no problem at all in terms of age ..

Although the difference in age when the actress or female character is younger, I admit that I have a certain prejudice, by several social factors of the industry that is not worth discussing

Wuuuuut. Interesting though? Will keep it on my radar but definitely will depend on who is cast as the leads.

I'm thanking W-Two Worlds, for starting the weird fantasy rom-com trend of how love could transcend comic books, time, age and everything in between.

Love both Beautiful Gongshim & Girl Who Sees Smell, so I hope they make it right!

Me too! I love strange fantasy rom-coms like this so I'm very thankful to W for making it trendy.

If they were born in the same year, I wonder if it will be kind of like a Voices of a Distant Star situation, just with fantasy-style cause, instead of sci-fi. Either that, or something to do with aging? Like 13 Going on 30 without the time-jump? Very interested to see how this shakes out. All I'll say is that if it ends up like a Voices of a Distant Star situation, they better do it right!

I was actually worried that the story would edge towards Big territory and as a result, the ending would turn out the same! I hope this new drama wouldn't though.

I loved W so much. I still don't understand why people thought it went south towards the end.

It kinda reminds me of the film 'Jack' with Robin Williams, where his body grows faster than his actual age.

I really enjoyed both the writer's previous shows, so am optimistic about this. I will reserve judgment on the whole age gap until more storyline details are revealed. If this is supposed to be a fantasy, most likely something supernatural occurs in which the female lead ages ahead of the male lead.

I think casting will be key with selling this story. There was a huge age gap in Beautiful Gong Shim, but our two leads were so wonderful together I didn't care a wink. Chemistry, and obviously acting ability, are important.

In the latter half of the drama Gongshim was put on the back burner and the show focused on Namgoong Min's character. The show should've been about Gongshim gaining confidence and her character growth. But instead we ended with a story about a birth secret with the heroine being the only one unaware of everything that was happening.

Oh i see. Because I didnt finished the whole, I dropped it in the middle. Nam Goongmin was the only reason I watched it so selfishly I admit I am a bit glad he stole the show, just like he did in Girl Who Sees Smell.

I read it somewhere else that the 18-year-old boy was killed in a car accident when he was 18. Then years have past, the female lead is now 31 and she discovers a boy just like him. I guess this where the fantasy takes part.

Oh wow the premise just got more interesting! I remember a Hollywood movie I once watched, where the guy in the opening scene after spending the day with his gf gets into an accident, but his body is preserved for some sort of experiment. He after some years due to some accident gets defreezed and goes to find his gf.
Something similar to My Amazing BF, but not quite. Never knew what movie it was, could never finish it.

I just hope it isn't a doppelganger situation. It sounds like it might be reincarnation, which could be cool. But we've had a lot of that lately and, lol, he would have needed to be reincarnated before his death so...yeah. Still not sure exactly what the fantasy aspect is...

Frankly, that sounds cool to me, and if done right it'll be really interesting. I'm a fan of noona romances, and I frankly don't mind this set up - as long as the boy isn't underage in real life, that is, because that's just wrong.

That probably won't happen since it's a male. They always use underage females tho as if there aren't a plethora of women actors aged 20+

Before you run for the hills screaming

Lmao I was literally just about to flip out. Definitely not here for the age gap, 18 may be the legal age but 18-year olds are still young and immature (our brains fully develop at 25) so the idea of a much older person in a romantic relationship with someone so young is really uncomfortable. If they have a satisfactory explanation for why that gap has to exist in-story, kudos.

Pfft. How many underaged females have been paired with grown ass men in the last year? With barely anyone batting a damn eye? Why can we see the grossness in the latter but not the former?

I agree. As long as both parties are legal and entering the relationship of their own free will I have absolutely no problem with the age gap. But the problem people have is the fact that it's a younger man and a much older woman. It is socially acceptable, and at times applauded, to have an older man and a younger woman but not as socially acceptable, especially in some countries, to have the opposite. It's extremely hypocritical.

Right?! Taec and Kim So-hyun skeeved me out big time! And frankly, 18 is a legal age so I don't see a problem here.

This premise sounds interesting but yes it depends on the casts too. Nam GoongMin was able to garner so much attention after both GWSS and BGS, so hopefully this one will cast someone underrated and talented too.

Yes, I'm in.

There's something wonderful in doing an unusual theme. I want a good noona romance. I want a great actress and a great actor. I want a tight script and a good PD.

For once I don't want a candy-too young actress. For once I want a bad-a$$ noona like LBY in IHYV and a great male character instead of a man-child like noona romances tend to do.

Give me what I want and I will give you what you want :)

I don't have a problem with this age difference, in the US he would be legal and there have been millions of dramas where the male lead is 10+ years older than the female lead and most don't consider it a problem.

Both GWSS & BG kinda fell flat in the endings but I'm optimistic maybe they can both make up for their shortcomings by working together ?
Regarding the age gap maybe their indifferent time zones
Like in Korea people are automatically one year older then in the U.S.

Though this wouldn't be a fantasy drama without some magical elements so lets blame it on the magic. They could be in separate universes or separate parts of Earth like in the upcoming drama Circle or maybe earth used to be one world and separated into pieces.

Wait actually that's true...

History Lesson-
We used to be one big chunk of land called Pangea until shifts and rifts caused pieces of land began to split up in to separate pieces known as countries.

if it means he's actually 31 but forced to live as an 18 in alternate universe or something like that, can they just cast Kim Soo-Hyun because he's fit for 31y.o male (also as an 18 y.o guy at the same time lol) and i freaking miss him in kdramaland already :((

I don't understand why an age gap is so..."oh no" especially in dramas. What's not to love, a beautiful actress and a beautiful actor finding love. Usually in a more mature way. I love age gaps for men and women in drama land. It usually makes for a much more interesting story line. Some of the best movies I ever seen was the Labyrinth (and I wish you tell me you didn't have a crush on Jared!!!) and Beautiful Girls.

The premise reminds me of the movie with Kang Dong-won "Vanishing Time: the Boy Who Returned". I didn't see the film but the plot seemed interesting.
For the male lead, are the creators going to cast an actor from his mid to late twenties with youthful looks because I think the ending would probably be with the guy returning to his actual age. ;-)

Now im so looking forward to its casting.

Hmmm. Why are people still harping on the age issue?

Firstly it's a supernatural fantasy drama. Not a documentary, or an advert on how to live your life.

Secondly, I strongly feel that we should all not judge any relationship based on age alone. I'm not talking about pedophilia, but in the case of 2 mature adults who are of age, shouldn't we wait and see what the characters are like before jumping to conclusions?

Ive met 30 year olds whose immature mentality drives me crazy, and also 18-20 year olds who are wise beyond their years. As long as there isn't a big power imbalance between the couple that is being abused, why can't people fall in love and have relationships with others who are younger than them, male or female?

Let's give the writer some faith that there is a reason why they reunited with the big age gap and hope for a interesting and fun romance between 2 similar aged souls with one in a younger body.

If I could get reborn into my 18 year old body, my husband would be happy certainly, but heck I'd be even happier! The endless energy at 18 coupled with the mental and self confidence that age has given me now, would be an awesome thing indeed! Oh to be 18 and young(er) again....

Park Bo Gum for the 18 years old boy and Seo Hyun Jin for the 31 years old woman. They will make a cute and adorable couple. Park Bo Gum once said that he wanted to play a student character so this character should be perfect for him.
