[Vlog] 7 of our favorite K-drama tropes

Thanks to everyone who left us such great comments and questions on our second vlog! This time around, we wanted to answer some reader questions, since you asked about our thoughts on multi-season dramas, streaming and licensing, dramas with wasted potential, and more.

But far and away the question we get asked most often is about our favorite tropes and cliches in dramaland, so we decided to talk about some of the tropes that always hook us no matter how many times we’ve seen it done before, like contract relationships and crossdressing, and all that good stuff.

We also announced our giveaway winner in the second video, and we promise to have many more giveaways soon!

Without further ado, here’s our latest video, and our Dramabeans Youtube channel where you can subscribe for updates.

I would love to know your opinion on idols leading dramas. What are your most/least favorite idol-turned-actors? Are there any dramas where you might've had low expectations or qualms because of casting choices, but ended up being blown away?

Can I tell what a kick I get out of the computer generated subs? Especially the guesses on Korean names. And yes, I am reading the subs. 'Cause that's how I watch TV these days.

Very much enjoying the vlog. Thank you!

LOL at GF’s “trope vending machine”!

Sometimes I do feel that dramas are like trope ramyun in a styrofoam bowl with the instruction of “Just Add Water.” Bad ones are overcooked sloppy hot mess without any nutritional values and great ones are the ones cooked with care with added savoring ingredients to enhance and deepen the flavors (like the ones we saw in Buamdong Revenge Club with lightly sautéed garlic and mussels!)

The ramyun in that show was killer.

Any hidden gem recs? I see a lot of the same shows being rec'd, but wonder about the ones that may have been over shadowed or just didn't have a big audience.

One hidden gem I adored was Evasive Inquiry Agency. Quirky as all get out, it's definitely not for everyone, but man, was it fun.

I love all the tropes you guys mentioned! I wonder if you also get questions from here? Anyway, here it is: Who's your favorite high quality trash in Kdramaland? We get a lot of these guys in dramas and I wonder who you are most attached with? Thank you!

High Quality Trash is clearly the best! He's not the original jerk, but he re-invented it!

Why didn't you guys check out Buam-dong Revenge Club or The Package? Lack of time?

Ok I have a question--what dramas do y'all think are completely overrated? Or don't hold up over time (BOF did NOT do well upon rewatch--but the first time I watched it was pure stay up all night, school, work, friends, life be damned crack). On the other side of the same coin--what dramas have you watched that you thought were completely underrated? Like as you're watching it and discussing it with others you're genuinely thinking---and I'm the only person in the world who likes this. Fine. The world is full of idjits anyway.

What's your take on the length of some dramas? Some have hours of utterly forgettable footage. Take Temperature of Love, I *love* it to death but there was too little conflict and tension for it to go for 20 hours, and some episodes were too repetitive to keep up weekly. (Thankful for the lovely leads, though)
Ackk, watching these kind of dramas makes me realise I love the real drama in a drama if that makes any sense. Say 5 episodes fewer would have done it a great service honestly. And it makes for an easier rewatch!
But some do deserve more episodes because they've build up great story arcs for the characters and overall plots. F.e Romantic Doctor Kim. My mind is blank now but I'm sure there are many more examples.

Thanks, the vlogs are great, keep up!

On the first question, I agree with GirlFriday--one of the draws for Kdramas for me is the one-season format. I compare it to reading a book--I know exactly how long it is, so I know what I'm committing myself to. And as I grow more familiar with the tropes and various story arcs, even the predictability becomes... comfortable? Yeah. So the one-season thing is something I generally prefer.

Now, tropes. Yesss, contract relationships, yes please, (Dal Ja's Spring!) with or without a side of forced cohabitation (Dal Ja's Spring!!)--which I've realized is a favorite trope of mine across fandoms. Appreciate the mention of 9 End 2 Outs! Which also ties into another favorite, friends to lovers.

I think I most like hate-to-love when it happens in the workplace. I'm thinking of shows like Go Ho's Starry Night and King of Dramas and Protect the Boss and Queen of Reversals.

Hi, I just want to say I love Dramabeans, I always check this site several times a day for recaps and news. This is not only a source of entertainment but also a source of study for me. By reading your recaps, my English has improved a lot. Studying English has never been so fun!
I can find a recap list in alphabetical order (a-z), but I am wondering if you can make other searching options like ascending or descending in year or ratings? It would be great to find some great dramas that I missed.
Thank you javabeans and girlfriday!

Oops, I forgot you already make a list in year order. I just want to check the list based on ratings :)

Hello! In this page, http://www.dramabeans.com/recaps/all/ you can sort the shows per year like this: http://www.dramabeans.com/recaps/all/?feature-sort=year
Or go to a particular year by entering the year in the search bar (this is the example for 2015) http://www.dramabeans.com/recaps/all/?search=2015

For ratings, you can go to http://www.dramabeans.com/ratings/ and use the dropdown above the search bar to sort them.
This is the example for ratings from high to low: http://www.dramabeans.com/ratings/?fr=high-to-low&searchstring=

You gals definitely spoke on some of my favorite tropes! I somehow didn't hate The Time I Have Loved You. Besides loving friends to lovers, I think I also enjoyed much of it because I got through the TW version In Time with You first, so of course the K drama had some preferable elements. Oh Ha Na was frustrating, but I still thought it was sweet.
