I’m finally watching VM and I love it as much as everyone said except for one thing. I get that it’s a new season, new mystery, new cast blah blah blahety blah. But they are spending SO much time with Matty it feels like they are trying to set up a spinoff with her. RT does love an angry teen girl.

In kpop news. I was watching GOT7 videos on YouTube and there’s a video of them talking about their friendship and Jinyoung calls Jackson his best friend and Jackson says that he and Jinyoung will be besties for life. So freaking cute.

Was that the GOT7 takes a friendship test video? That was so sweet. I wish they would have had JJP talk about their friendship too.

At first I thought that I just hated that there was change in VMland, Neptune. But no. I FLOVE Patton Oswald and Nicole. I could watch Wallace (who had himself quite the nice little glow-up. I did not think teenage Wallace Fennel was attractive AT ALL) and his cute little family and geeking out over high school field trips ALL DAY LONG.

But no. My issue is with Matty and feeling like a backdoor pilot is being shoved at me every single time she’s on the screen. And Veronica. I’m not thrilled with grown up Veronica. I think when she was a teenager and it was her/us against the world it was easy to root for her because she generally was right. And she was the underdog fighting against the corrupt power structure in her cuss’d up world. But watching now, knowing the spoiler—its easy to see it coming. Logan has had a massive amount of character growth–he is/has dealt with his issues. He’s in therapy. He’s ready to settle down into adulthood. He’s dealing with that gaping maw of anger and rage that Lily and his father and growing up how he grew up and probably even his first dozen go-rounds with Veronica left him with. There’s probably more places to explore with the character but for the most part—he feels done. Or, since Im not at the end of the season–mostly done. Whereas Im having a hardass time liking Veronica at all this go-round. When she was a teenager and it was her/us against the world it was easy to be on her side because she was generally right. She was the smartest person in the room and when she failed or fell we saw her in her vulnerable moments. We saw her breaking down and building herself up again to fight again. We saw her alone with no one on her side (or no one she would let in). But now—she has people on her side. She pushes them away but they are there. She’s not the only smart person in the room—which she would know if she would let people in.

I find her attempts to drag Logan back to the “old” Logan super gross and disgusting and I love that he calls her out on it. When she pushed him into losing his temper when he tried his damndest to keep it together after she turned down his proposal? And she literally jumped his bones after he busted up the cabinet? I was horrified and disgusted. And I loved his quip–I’m glad it was good for you (it was NOT good for him) and that he left her his therapists number. Which she obviously didnt use because just a few eps later here she is again as he’s trying to talk to her like an adult and she keeps shooting him down. “I dont like therapy Logan. I dont like Broadway Logan” the only Logan that she seems to like is the Obligatory Psychotic Jackass Logan.

Which brings me back to Matty. They totally be setting up a mentorship here–the same way that Keith unwittingly made Veronica into a private eye by having Veronica look after his books—something that he says (sometimes) that he regrets. Veronica is doing the same thing with her eyes wide open. Except

Except that she KNOWS how angry and unhappy she was as a teenager so why is she taking Matty under her wing and setting her up for the same childhood?

Which, if Matty doesnt wind up with her own full-scale teenage detective agency Veronica Mars 2.0 if you will then I can absolutely see them setting her up to be Veronicas lone emotional outlet going forward. Logan and Veronica were a toxic relationship, for sure, with a foundation built on mutual rage and bitterness and disappointment with the world but their love for each other humanized the both of them. Despite the toxicity of the pairing they WERE in love with each other and it was obvious. Since Logan is gone now it feels like this whole season is being set up to prepare us for Matty to be the humanizing person in Veronicas life.

I mean, we never see Wallace. Mac is in Istanbul, Papa Mars won’t be able to fill that void because of his memory loss—its going to be that little girl and I am so blasted irritated by the very notion (and less we forget she’s the one who outed Jude and his love interest as gay on the Fosters. Grrrrrr I mean—different character, same actress) that even though all of this is speculation on my part (MAYBE SHE DIES TOO) I am ready to walk away from season 5 and burn my VMars t-shirt, stickers, and movie script while crying salty years.

The absolute disappointment on Logans face when Veronica not only refused but mocked couples therapy? Killed me dead. How does she not see that they need this? She once (or was it twice? Or three times) accused him of Lily’s murder and had him LOCKED UP. Sure it was 15 years ago but how does she NOT see that they have one or two things that they need to work on?!

To continue my angry vmars rants I am legit pissed that she’s crying more about her aborted friendship with Nicole than she is over Logan being deployed and not saying goodbye. But, considering she was halfway down his pants the very same night he left. Keep it classy, Mars.
