I’m a sucker for reincarnation stories. When done well, they are my catnip. One of my favorites is the 2010 film TRY TO REMEMBER / HAVE WE MET?.

“Try to remember” is the last line in the film. “Have we met” is a recurring question. The film is a wonderful tip of the hat to the story of Yi Won’s Mother, whose heartbreaking letter to her deceased husband was found on his mummified remains, along with sandals she wove from her hair. His tomb was discovered in 1998 at a construction site in Andong City. The movie is based on the premise that reincarnation is a reality, and that souls who deeply love each other can reunite in future lives. Interestingly, the photography instructor and his landlord’s daughter actually had met earlier — in the same college photography club — although it took a long time for them to realize it. He did not know that his sunbae was in fact the cousin of the girl from Andong, but she knew it.

The following of karmic threads from lifetime to lifetime also cropped up in FAITH, and was the mechanism by which the Great Doctor searched for Choi Young until she was able to meet him again. The inscription in the front of her diary about earnest longing providing the means to be reunited with a loved one in a different time sounds very much like the metaphysical prospecting method of the young woman in this film. I enjoyed the little sageuk-within-the-movie in the last half-hour of the film. It was done well, with a few minor differences from the actual story of Yi Won’s Mother. All in all, it’s a very enjoyable film with a surprising emotional kick in the pants.
