Open Thread #18

Not too much to report today. Let’s see — Oscars are on Sunday. Yawn. I’d probably skip them entirely if not for Jon Stewart, although his brand of humor tends not to go over well at these events. I think I spent more time cringing the last time he hosted. Well, at least it wasn’t as horrible as when Letterman hosted. Despite the corniness, I think Ellen Degeneres works best at these types of things. C’mon, everyone wants their butts kissed, not mocked!

What’s up y’all?

SONG OF THE DAY

Travis – “Flowers in the Window.” I don’t know why I like Travis when I (mildly) dislike Coldplay, given that they’re practically the same band. I think it’s because Coldplay bores me. I’ve seen them in concert a bunch of times (I have rabid Coldplay-fan friends) and they’re very good… but dull. On the other hand, this song by Travis always makes me happy. [ zShare download ]

When Coldplay decided U2 was a better role model than Echo and the Bunnymen, they ceased being interesting. Nell is actually the band Coldplay should be -- a starry eyed Jeff Buckley-ite sailing on a crisp shimmer of guitars.

Travis is pants, but at least Fran Healy doesn't try Chris's poe-faced "man of the people" humility or his abuse of the falsetto. Nor does Fran have aspirations to be the next castrata of the UK (hello James Blunt!)

Oh man James Blunt is a douche. Some guy made the hilarious parody of his "You're Beautiful" song and replaced it with "My Cubicle" (and then people ran and made Youtube videos): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O_5ef49N5I (My cubicle)

But this one wins ("It's Bloody Cold") because they spoofed the video too -- you know, that ridiculous one where James Blunt is undressing in front of the camera and dives into the ocean:

The parody, below:

I kinda liked James Blunt at first during my Antony and the Johnsons phase. He's kinda like the Kiera Knightley of pop, a upscale brand of bland.

I have to disagree about Coldplay, they are my #1 band. Boring? I think all their songs have some meaning to them, and find them very inspiring and thought provoking.

But I guess everyone might not like them. :(

Not trying to sound too serious, but wouldn't you agree that we've had one hell of a week?

1. Castro steps down (I mean, he's dying so it's obvious he'd want to do this to ease the transition of power).
2. Kosovo declares its independence. (China and Russia cringes)

hmmm....

jack johnson > coldplay.....j/k. Coldplay isn't bad.....but Jack Johnson, odd as it seems, has a nice Hawaiian sound to him. It's the kind of music you can listen to on the beach.

these award shows are usually boring but i'll watch for jon stewart also.

javabeans, i've got a question for you, who votes for the winners of the kbs and mbc drama awards? (is it viewers) and who are the netizens?

as a non-korean i've always wondered who votes for those things, thanks.

I completely agree - we've had one heck of a week -
we should strive not to be myopic when it comes to what happens in the world we live in.
it's been one heck of a week -

Whom else is excited about Daniel Henney being in the next X-men movie?
And poor Edison Chen declaring his retirement from the entertainment business. So sad.

project runway anyone? i'm sad that Sweet Pea left but am not at all surprised. still, she was really cute. i'm having a harder and harder time watching Christian act like a little bitch...again and again. of course i knew he would go to fashion week, but that he won the last challenge! total crap about that outfit being wearable. and frankly i think all of his clothes had looked exactly the same..

anyone watch j-dramas? i'm in the middle of watching the Nodame Cantabile special (somehow i didn't hear about it when it came out), and i love it! its just as good as the series.

OMG...i feel like i have been living under a rock this week..i had no idea that Kosovo had declared their independence...doesn't that bring up the issue about why kosovo can have their independence but other regions like Palestine can't? Isn't there also a region in Spain who want to break away too?

I bet Russia is not very happy about this...

and LMAO at the james blunt video..i saw the "It's Bloody Cold" parody about a year ago but it still makes me laugh...i really do not get the hype about him....i find his voice very annoying ^___^;

Who will he be playing in the new movie? The last one ruined it for me though, so they'd have to do some serious fixing up to make this new movie worth seeing.

Oh, me too!!!

I LOVE TRAVIS, but I don't like Coldplay. I think they're not the same at all.

I remember at one point I only had "Re-Offender" on my playlist when it first came out. I listened to it over and over and over again, and I still love it even now.

So do you like Stereophonics too ?

I've seen actually seen Sean play a acoustic set at Bimbo's in SF. We heckled him; he told us to STFU; we then all had a pint; jolly time held by all! That apparently went into the Stereo's JEEP album! :D

I actually like the Stereophonics (and Coldplay too.). It's just if you grew up during the Lager!Lager!Lager! party that was Britpop, bands like Coldplay, Starsailor (and uggghhhh) Embrace were kinda anticlimactic. Glorious self-destruction didn't start again until Franz Ferdinand and (God Save The) Libertines signed on.

NO WAY. i never thought that there were people who disliked coldplay. oh well, that's me and my musical ignorance.
gah james blunt! just shoot me now.

on a random (but uk-related) note, has anyone heard of graham norton? he's a hilarious talk-show host who can make me cry with laughter. i recently found his videos on youtube with orlando bloom. i wish he had a show in the u.s.

i love nodame cantabile and the special was pretty good, too.

does anyone follow the mbc drama, chunhailsek park jung-geum? i usually hate overly dramatic soap operas but this one is pretty addictive despite its cliched use of evil stepmoms and unlikely coincidences. although i'm all for ajumma power, i have to say that i wish the main character was a little more charismatic (like maybe go hyun jung) and just a tad bit younger, same goes for her opposites--i know, i'm horrible. the actress does a decent job, but she's better at the disillusioned, self-absorbed characters like the one she played in goodbye solo, rather than the righteous cop. han go eun is strikingly beautiful and tablo made his appearance in the series this weekend!

gotta love the Scots...

Those parodies are hilarious! Thanks! You always seem to find the best YouTube videos.

Blake, Graham Norton is funny. You can find episodes of his show on BBC America.

hjk--i watched a few episodes of I am Happy/Happiness at your suggestion and love it! The relationships are hilarious, touching, smart. It's the first time that many of the veteran actors on this show don't seem overly "greasy." I never thought I would come across a show that made the unlikely Lee Hoon-Kim Hyojin pairing completely work! Plus, the way the writers portray chaebol seems too true! So here's another fan who is backing hjk on this...check it out!
