4.459% for Lovely Runner! And with Queen of Tears out of the way, Byeon Woo-seok can finally claim his rightful place as #1 most buzzworthy actor.

These are just actors who generated the most buzz for the week, not the Baeksang Arts Awards.

Queen of Tears aired for eight weeks. Kim Soo-hyun was on top for five of those eight weeks, and Kim Ji-won was on top for the other three.

@panshel oh I thought this was about recognition and attention.

Sadly, the same thing happened with Extraordinary You. Lee Jae-wook, Rowoon, and Kim Young-dae blew up after that drama, while Kim Hye-yoon did a second lead role in Snowdrop.

Hard to deny the gendered context which while predictable, is still infuriating.

6

Bless KYD. A more stiff-looking actor is yet to come. Ok, I exaggerate but only slightly.

3

Yess my thoughts exactly. However the reason I think she did snowdrop was because it was sky castle's team and she trusted them however nothing good came out of it for her.
I just don't understand why she is not blowing up as much as he is, is it because she had her moment with sky castle or as @DancingEmma said gender bias.
I fear that she might be typecasted and not get enough roles.

4

I'm following both leads on Instagram and I see a big difference with how Varo Entertainment is promoting BWS. I don't see any updates from KHY's side which is such a bummer as I would love them to hype her up and she to update her feed.

4

I agree. Snowdrop was a terrible idea which presented a tone deaf at best and malicious at worst attempt to play with historical revisionism. According to the scholarly works I have read, the Military dictatorship repeatedly spread the propaganda that demonstrators and the dissenters were North Korean agents and arrested, imprisoned. tortured and killed/disappeared countless women and men. Many from that generation of demonstrators who resisted are still living and they remember what happened to them and their comrades.
I really appreciated finding out some time ago that Woo Hyun – who was born in Gwangju – was a pro-democracy activist and was imprisoned for this by the military dictatorship.
Jung Haein’s career hasn’t ostensibly suffered so incredibly unfair if it undermined Kim Hyeyoon’s in any way.

kim hyeyoon has been consistently right behind byeon wooseok this whole time. it's not unusual for female stars to trail much lower than their male counterparts so this is really good. when he moves to #1, she'll likely be #2.

and not necessarily, kim jiwon topped the list over kim soohyun several times over the run of qot.

@cpeee: I am not on Insta so appreciate knowing this albeit unwelcome news. Hype and promotion are as crucial as they’ve ever been but is even more cutthroat now. Why isn’t she being promoted as actively? Sorry for my ignorance about the intricacies but Is Varo the production company? If so, why isn’t she being justifiably promoted as fiercely as he is? Gendered differential much? She has been magnificent. These so and sos. Sigh.

@dncingemma Varo Ent is the agency of BWS and Artists Company is KHY agency. BWS agency on IG and YT is actively promoting their actor vs KHY's agency. They do have interviews together in YT from the production company but that's it for KHY. 🫠

But hasn’t it always been this way? In 2014 when MLFTS came out KSH walked away with most of the recogniton and JJH got a pat on the back for doing well as a “married actress”. With True Beauty too CEW and HIY got 90% of the hype MGY was far behind them but thankfully her agency knew how to media play so she didn’t completely lose out. Even for Love Alarm all the attention went to SK and Netflix basically adopted him after that while KSH hasn’t gotten a single Netflix drama after that. This pattern has been repeating for years. It’ll most likely continue in the future too. BWS will soar to superstardom but highly unlikely KHY will receive the same recognition. Even for LR she is second billed to BWS.

Required fields are marked *

JJH was a big star before MLFTS and nothing changed and she was still the bigger star after. It's her who gave his name for the movie The Thieves.

3

Just because structural gender bias has been a constant feature in this industry and beyond in SK doesn’t make it a tedious or redundant subject to discuss. It remains outrageous and unfair and it is important to acknowledge its existence and talk about it.

2

KSH earns twice as much as JJH and received more accolades post MFLTS. JJH has always been a superstar but its also true that her star factor has dimmed post marriage. She was blamed for the failure of both LOTBS and Jirisan. KSH even for his movie that flopped was praised and Sulli was blamed for its failure. This has always been the case, men are generally more valued than women and especially for idol dramas like LR the breakout always goes to the male lead. The reason this keeps happening is our own fault. We still praise men more than women when they breakout. If you look at the movie Exhuma LDH is receiving more appreciation than KGE. Its always a good discussion point but its more sad that nothing has changed in decades. Even if you go as far back as Winter Sonata BYJ got all the fame and accolades and till this day day Japan is obsessed with him while CJW has had to reinvent herself numerous times and ultimately had to semi retire after numerous flops.

4

JJH was the bigger star who walked away with the network's daesang for MLFT. That was hardly a pat on the back. She was front and center of MLFT. She gained more fans in dramaland who were previously unaware of her, as she had primarily acted in films.

4

Oh, I totally think it's not fair for the actresses in general. But MLFTS wasn't the good example because JJH will always have the statut of big star in Korea.

3

Kim Go-eun is a Chungmuro darling. She has been a leading actress since her debut. While the movie crowds acknowledged her talents, the drama crowds focused more on Lee Do-hyun as he is a promising growing actor who appeals to fangirls of all ages. You can always tell when an article or review by a drama fan when Lee Do-hyun is the main focus over Choi Min-sik, Yoo Hae-jin, and Kim Go-eun. Among the fans of cinemas, the other veteran actors are the main appeal. Kim Go-Eun did a fantastic job in this film and is one of the Baeksang Best Actress award nominees.
Most drama viewers are women, so naturally, men are more appealing to women. Fangirls tend to make more noise than fanboys.

6

JJH got the bulk of the recognition for MLFTS, while KSH was along for the ride. She won multiple Daesang for MLFTS and her character is truly iconic as far as kdrama characters go.

As for Exhuma, the only clips that I see on TikTok are KGE's seance clips, nothing of LDH's.

3

I hope for continued rise inratings and buzz for Lovely Runner, BWS and Kim Hye Yoon! ☺️

It sucks how they're keeping him a mystery, but at least now we know that Tae-sung knows where Sol lives. And he was still charming with the flashlight shined into his eyes. 🤣

3

That brother character in LV will soon be, deservingly, hated more than QoT’s Eun-snake villain. lol

The buzz may also be because of the songs that he has sung for the drama. "Eclipse" is doing rather well on Spotify and the ML's song Sudden Shower has over 2M views on YT.

Cera, as you know, there is a deeply gender bias in Sk - obviously no only there - as women still get paid considerably less and have been hampered by a variety of systemic discriminatory measures. The entertainment field is a microcosm of the broader society and its legal, policy and cultural mores are influenced to a great extent by all the legal and policy failures. KHY has carried this drama with her incandescent performance and as much as I like BWS in this, without her, this drama wouldn’t have soared as it has. She should be and deserves to be hyped and noticed for this. She shouldn’t get his crumbs or be noticed in his wake. Gender bias and discrimination has a long and insidious tail.

I agree with you 💯 Em. In as much as not only SK far too many places in our wonderful world have women treated as second class citizens.
I just meant that the apparent lack of active support / promotion by her agency vs active promotion + popularity of music may lead to more buzz. After all these lists only take into account social media mentions and some such not actual acting merit where as you have beautifully pointed out uri FL is incandescent!! ♥️🥰

3

Cera: i know you do and I hope so too. I fear she will not get a deserved career boost and that he will reap the glory. Of course, I know there are female non-actors who are battling complex discriminatory practices doing difficult and unglamorous jobs in SK but in this space, even knowing how privileged actirs are, most women get a comparatively raw deal. He wouldn’t have shined as brightly had she been ordinary. Since she brought her AAAA game, BWS has been the lucky one. I so wish he woukd have the grace and self-awareness to publicly acknowledge that. Probably will not hapoen given the tight scripts they follow but she has to be acknowledged and lauded. She should also become a respected movie actor as she has it within her. I’m just so bawled over by her emotional resonance and ability to create genuinely believable responses in the midst of a highly contrived storyline.

4

@dncingemma byeon wooseok said that he was so moved by kim hyeyoon's sincerity as sol that it motivated him to do his best as seonjae at the drama press conference. so he is aware, and has acknowledged her light.

also, from my understanding, the reason she's not being promoted as much is bc she is in between agencies right now. she just moved to a new one, but the drama was filmed while she was under her old agency, so contracting issues may be the reason why her new agency is not able to do anything. speculation, but it's the most logical conclusion, imo.

6

@dogemama: Thank you for taking the time to reply with that info.

2

its true KHY changed her agency recently like @dogemama mentioned to Artist Agency. That is why she doesn't have lot of promotions. And the fact is drama fans are mostly females more focused on gorgeous men than FL. Also fail to acknowledge that these MLs wouldn't have looked this great without their FLs.

5

@dramaticfoodie: Thank you for your reply and info. While I have no empirical evidence, anecdotally it does seem that the maj of the KD viewers are women. I try to be conscious of the heteronormative bias which reduces all non-queer women to a thirsting, unthinking mass of hormonal teenagers regardless of their age when the issue of extremely good looking KD make actors comes up but a good portion of the commenters on this site care about systemic discrimination, how to prevent and ameliorate it and to try and realise our human rights even if we are clearly here to enjoy ourselves and lose our heads in the most delightful of ways because we emotionally connect with transcendent and resonant acting that some Korean actors perform as though they are using magic.

5

Even during EY there was little buzz for KHY as her male leads took all the popularity as someone already mentioned. I disagree that it isn't gendered because agencies also choose to promote male stars over female ones and her being between agencies is just an excuse. NIW also recently moved agencies but his new agency is doing everything to capitalize on his post MMH fame and popularity. BWS just landed an appearance on You Quin after Running Man and announced an Asia Tour plus he opened a new community on Weverse and is being praised for everything from him looks to his acting, singing and even his manners. His also rumored to sign Prada as an ambassador and will likely dominate endorsements and magazines for the rest of the year. There is huge buzz around what he will pick for his next project and he is flooded with scripts but I remember KHY saying that even after her breakout in Sky Castle she barely go any scripts. Same happened after EY and its possible she'll be typecast into high school roles and youth dramas even after LR. KHY joining artist company might not be a good choice for her since she has many same aged peers to compete against for resources.

It is nothing short of outrageous. It is fantastic if you are a tall, good looking young man with a gorgeous voice and have the good fortune to be paired with a stellar actor like KHY. BWS is a delight in LR but he is not an acting powerhouse like she is. Her excellence benefitted him and made him shine. So so unfair that he gets to reap the benefits of this collaborative endeavour while she has to wait in the wings. Gender bias in a patriarchal society has a long tail.

3

Once in a while someone points out this patriarchy but the minute a new pretty flower boy breaks out everyone goes crazy for him. Women need to be dressed in luxury brands and be bad ass to get noticed and even then they’re being noticed 90% for their fashion. Men can be dressed like slobs, be tall and have cute smiles and dimples and people go crazy for them. Even red flag characters like LMH in BoF and Heirs, SK in basically everything, LJW in EY or KYD in Penthouse. Only when women behave like badass men they get noticed like LDH in Search WWW or SYJ in IOTNBO. This pattern unfortunately won’t ever change. Recently Anne Hathaway was criticised for earning more than her male lead in The Idea Of You. It’s ridiculous that people would even bring it up. Why should a no name rookie earn the same as an Oscar winning actress? Even CEW earns more than SHK and JJH. This pattern repeats in every generation.

I still don't understand why people don't watch dramas on Wed/Thurs. Before, didn't that time slot belong to shows that were, I guess, comforting or light hearted? Something to get one over hump day/hump of the week?

What variety shows are people watching that dramas can't be scheduled instead?

Around 2018 trot took over WT slot and since then its a slot that belongs to variety shows and trot. Weekends became the new primetime especially with the reduced work hours in South Korea. Even news channels had to reschedule to an earlier slot to get better ratings.

Well, one of my early favorite kdramas that I wouldn’t call ‘light hearted’ was a Wed/Thur drama the terrific MBC’s COME AND HUG ME (2018) (Viki US). CAHM’s Nielsen nationwide average rating: 4.5%. It is one of my all time favorite so I am now watching Jang Ki-young’s return to kdramaland in THE ATYPICAL FAMILY.
As CAHM wrapped up in July 2018 another W/T drama SBS’s YOUR HONOR started up until Sept. so back then I watched W/T dramas from May 16-Sept. 20, 2018.
