The Republic of Korea gets ready to lawyer up

The crew of MBC’s upcoming Wednesday-Thursday drama Lawyers of the Republic of Korea gathered on the afternoon of June 2 in Seoul’s Kangnam neighborhood for the show’s press conference.

The drama centers around the world of divorce law (and the warring divorce attorneys on either side), in which Lee Soo Kyung (Soulmate, Golden Age of the Daughter in Law) plays a lawyer who passed the bar in last place in her class. She’s still bitter over an ex who left her, played by Ryu Soo Young (18 vs. 29, Bad Couple), and currently is in a career rut, unable to get any of the good cases.

That changes with the high-stakes divorce suit between her actress best friend, Han Eun Jung (Full House, The Person I Love), and fund manager husband Lee Sung Jae (Daisy, Stranger than Heaven). But Best Friend Actress hires lawyer Ryu Soo Young of the top law firm in the country, while husband chooses Lee Soo Kyung. Uh-oh! I’m sure the sparks start flying soon enough.

(Pet peeve: It’s not the Lawyers of the Great Republic of Korea; it’s simply “Republic of Korea.” But speaking of titles, it seems to be going for a cutesy vibe, even punctuating it differently [대~한민국 변호사] to suggest the ever-popular sporting cheer: Daaaae~ han min guk! *clapclap* *clap* *clap!*)

Since this is the drama that Lee Soo Kyung abruptly left When Night Comes to star in, I’m curious to see if it was a good choice on her part. I do like the actors of Lawyers, but I’m not intrigued by either the plot or preview. But Lee Soo Kyung’s bright, lively personality is always a breath of fresh air to watch.

Lawyers of the Republic of Korea airs after Spotlight retires; it premieres on July 9.

Cool. Lee Soo Kyung looks cute in those glasses. The plot doesn't sound very interesting but... I hope the drama does well 8D

Not too much on topic, but Ryu Soo Young looks somewhat uncomfortable in the second picture with Han Eun Jung......

I love both ladies but I'm not quite interested in the guys. Maybe this will end up being better than it looks.

i agree it looks like a performer's show (if they pull it off), not a story showcase. lee sung-jae was one of the earliest reasons i started paying attention to korean movies (the original & best "Public Enemy", among others.) it's sad to see his career going limp then worse after 2004. hope he'll have a big comeback soon.

he does look weird now...too lean & bony, but he can't pass off as one of the young bucks anymore. actors really need to help change ageist prejudice, by 1st showing us the best at every age - not stick to 21 forever :P

I'm not sure why, but Lee Soo Kyung's character already seems to annoy me. I guess I just don't like that kind of character. They can be cute, but overall, annoying. No matter how different the plot, there's always that same ol' character traits that pissed me off.

I'm anticipating this drama but mostly because I'm a fan of Ryu Soo Young (especially in his roles in 18 vs 29 & Bad Couple)... The plot seems kind of blah but come on, there's bickering and talkbacks on courts, let's see what could go wrong...

I've just finished watching the series on mysoju.com (with english subs). All I can say is Lee Sung Jae was superb in his role- great actor who breathed life into his character. Plot may seem a little predictable at first, but this is offset by the quirky characters of lee sung jae and lee soo kyung... it gets more interesting as the series move along (it doesn't take long, trust me). No boring spots throughout (for me anyways at least).
If anything at all, watch it for lee sung jae-- great acting (one of the best i've seen in most k-dramas) and an interesting multi-dimensional character who never failed to make me laugh (at last, a regular joe with faults, etc. i.e. none of that 'perfect' korean man crap found in most series) to boot.
Plus great rib-tickling support from lee sung jae's sidekick (driver Oh) in the series too..
Didn't really like Ryu and the other girl though..sort of paled in comparison to lee sung jae's performance and was sort of blah for me throughout.
I first saw lsj in 'dancing with the wind', and it's great to watch him return to tv again. Can't wait for his next series.

Love this drama - one of the best among those I've seen this year! Suli is right: Lee Sung Jae alone is worth the watch. The first question interested me when starting the series is how they are going to turn this asshole character into someone audience will like - it really doesn't take long.

There are of course more than LSJ that worth your time. The ensemble cast is equally endearing. I've watched it twice already and will surely do a thrice viewing. (The love confession scene is a classics!)

I really love this drama, hihihi, funny to watch, meaningful to remember, refresh enough to your soul..before this drama, I don't know Lee Sung Jae, but now he attracts me the most among Korean actors. He stars so naturally and professionally. I watch this drama almost everyday...nearly leaning by heart. Most of Korean drama is so boring bc of prolong the scence, but this drama perfect every scence, nothing to complain,

I love scence love confession too..hahhaha, both of them look so cute and shy..

After this drama, I check all films stared by LSJ.. If I meet him real life , maybe falingl in love with him hihihihi. because I read some information that he is a good man, high resposibility for work and never have the scandal...I wish him always do good job and get successful in life. I am waiting for the new drama of him.

By the way, I try to find the film THE MAFIA, THE SALESMAN online, but can not find out, anyone helps me??? thanks in advance..
